Pucovski withdraws from Test reckoning citing mental health issues

Pucovski informed Australia A team management he was struggling on Tuesday evening in Perth

Daniel Brettig13-Nov-2019Selection chairman Trevor Hohns believes the young Victorian batsman Will Pucovski’s self-aware decision to withdraw from Australia’s reckoning for the first Test of the summer against Pakistan should be a source of praise rather than penalty, as Cricket Australia works to get to grips with the burgeoning issue of mental health.Pucovski informed Australia A team management he was struggling on Tuesday evening in Perth, the day the hosts collapsed in their first innings to Pakistan in what had been widely billed as a batting trial. Having previously taken two breaks to deal with his mental health last summer, once when representing Victoria and then during the Canberra Test against Sri Lanka where he was a non-playing member of the squad, Pucovski joined Glenn Maxwell and Nic Maddinson as players taking mental health leave, although each in their own unique circumstances.Hohns, who alongside the national coach Justin Langer was left to recall Cameron Bancroft to fill out seven batting positions in the squad, was adamant that Pucovski’s continuing management of mental health difficulties would not rule him out of further selection opportunities, while also remarking admiringly of the courage and openness on display.”It is a very unfortunate happening for him once again, he is a great player,” Hohns said. “He is going to be a very, very good player but, obviously, the timing wasn’t quite right for him at the moment. He made the call to make himself unavailable.”I am not qualified to talk too much about mental health but it is a subject that is coming to the fore more and more – not just in our sport but in other sports and in life in general. I think we should be quite proud and pleased our players in our sport are comfortable coming out and talking about it.”ALSO READ: A lot to learn about mental health issues – Cricket Australia’s Ben OliverThey were sentiments echoed by captain Tim Paine. “He’s a great young kid and it’s sad to see him going through this. We know how talented he is. I think making the right decision to step away and take care of himself and get himself healthy and in the right state of mind is going to be important because we think he is someone who has got a huge Test future.”First and foremost, we want Will to be a happy young man. Sometimes we forget that he is still a kid. He has got a lot of pressure put on him from outside sources and expectation. Hopefully he’s in a position in the next few years to fulfil that potential that he has got. The first priority for us and for Will is his mental well-being.”Ben Oliver, CA’s head of national teams, described the process by which Pucovski came to withdraw, before being seen chatting casually with Langer in Perth towards the end of the Australia A game – a moment many interpreted to be a conversation about his imminent Test selection, when it was in fact quite the opposite.”During the course of the Australia A game, Will presented to team management and the national selectors that he was experiencing some challenges and ultimately sought counsel on that through our and his support network, before then determining that it’s best for him at this point in time not to be considered for Test selection,” Oliver told SEN Radio. “We’ve worked with him closely over the last 24 hours to help support him through that.”In the short term the absolute priority is Will as a human being and to give him the time and the space and the expert support he needs to focus on his health and well-being at the current moment. Cricket will come next and we’ll deal with that when the time’s right. But as it currently stands, the right thing for Will is to focus on his own health and well-being and we’ll support him through that.”We’re broadly aware of this issue in society and while we never want to see anyone suffering or going through challenges in the way our three players have expressed recently, I think the positive we can take from this is that we’re able to increase awareness around the challenges that exist with the mental health and well-being area, and acknowledge that it’s not a sport thing, not a cricket thing, it’s a society thing. There’s much to be learned about that, and there’s much to be done to continue to support people as they go through these challenges.”An unrelenting schedule and an ever faster cycle of public scrutiny on players, through social as well as traditional media, were all compounding factors in Oliver’s eyes, having commenced in his role during this year’s Ashes series in England. “Having been involved in the game at different levels for a long time, one aspect I hadn’t been involved in to a close degree was international cricket, and one of the early observations I’ve had in the role is the intense scrutiny and the relentless schedule that exists around cricket,” he said.”From that perspective there is an absolute need for us to invest time, energy, resources into understanding the challenges that exist for players and staff around mental health in that context, and making sure we do everything we can. Mental health is one of the factors that do need to be considered. I think it’s also part of a broader recognition that we’re playing a lot of cricket these days and we have more access to detailed information, analysis and insight than we’ve ever had before, so selection is absolutely an art and a science, and we’re trying to understand how we can systemise that further, to really enhance the selection process.”After a comfortable victory for New South Wales over Western Australia at the SCG, Mitchell Starc pointed out issues around the “pretty ridiculous” schedule and travel and increasing awareness of mental health but also lauded the fact that Pucovski, Maddinson and Maxwell had all chosen to act rather than letting issues fester beyond their control.”It raises a few questions,” Starc said. “It’s very positive that these guys can come out with how they are travelling and feeling. It’s concerning that you’ve got three guys who have taken themselves out of cricket for a period of time due to mental health. It’s Movember as well, so it heightens the awareness around it. It’s about making sure these guys are well supported, which I’m sure they will be. Three guys who have gone through it are very good people and cricketers and hopefully we see them come back sooner rather than later.”There’s a number of things. There’s the pressure around cricket, the schedules are pretty ridiculous these days. I haven’t seen those guys in person so don’t know exactly what they are going through but it’s quite public as well. The positive thing is that the guys are feeling more comfortable about being open and honest with how they are feeling whereas in the past they might have just tried to kick on and get through things and it could have built up to be something worse.”

Fiorentina are hoping to secure the player on loan but the two clubs have yet to agree on the terms of the deal. Meanwhile, reports that Chelsea are considering whether to continue the discussions with the Serie A outfit as there are three to four other clubs who have also shown interest in the player.

After Chelsea acquired Casadei from Inter Milan in 2022 for an initial fee of £12.6 million ($16.24m), with an additional £4.2 million ($5.41m) in potential add-ons, the player spent the first half of the 2022/2023 season with Chelsea's under-21 side before being loaned out to Reading for the second half of the campaign. Last season, Casadei was loaned to Leicester City, where he had the opportunity to work under Maresca. However, his time with The Foxes was cut short when Chelsea recalled him in January. Despite his return, Casadei was used sparingly for the remainder of the season and was more of a bench warmer.

Nat Sciver and Fran Wilson power England to 127-run victory

England seal series in Kuala Lumpur with big win powered by strong batting

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Dec-2019England 327 for 4 (Sciver 100*, Knight 86, Wilson 85*) beat Pakistan 200 (Maharoof 64) by 127 runsNat Sciver cracked an 85-ball century, and Fran Wilson added a quickfire 85 not out from 49 balls, as England eased to a series-sealing 127-run victory over Pakistan in the second women’s ODI in Kuala Lumpur. After winning the toss and batting first on a sweltering day, England suffered an early setback when Danni Wyatt fell to Nida Dar for 6 in the second over of the match.Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont regrouped with a 61-run stand for the second wicket, before Beaumont was the second to go, caught by Diana Baig off Nashra Sandhu for 21.But thereafter, England took total control of the contest, as Sciver joined Knight in an 84-run stand for the third wicket, bringing up the 150 in the 29h over before Knight was run out for 86 from 100 balls.Amy Jones chipped in with 17 from 22 balls, but it was the arrival of Wilson that kicked the innings into another gear, as she and Sciver climbed into the final 14.1 overs of the innings with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 146.Wilson struck eight fours and three sixes in a career-best innings, while Sciver reached her third ODI hundred from the penultimate ball of the innings, as England closed on 327 for 4.Chasing that total was never going to be a realistic prospect for Pakistan, who lost wickets at regular intervals before being bowled out for 200 in the 45th over. The captain Bismah Maroof made a brisk 64 from 65 balls, and Nahida Khan made 40 from 43. But England’s wickets were shared around, with Anya Shrubsole, Sarah Glenn, Sophie Ecclestone and Knight all claiming two apiece.”I was really happy to reach three figures, from a selfish point of view, but it was just nice to take the team to a big total,” said Sciver.”Fran batted so well when she came in and she really helped us accelerate towards 300 and beyond – it was a lot of fun batting with her and she played excellently.”It was a shame Heather didn’t get to her landmark because she batted so well and it would have been a lovely way for her to celebrate getting to 100 caps.”Pakistan have been quite testing, they were hard to get away at points today and they were solid with the bat so we’re happy to have gone 2-0 up and won the series.”

West Ham struck gold on "monster" who’d be worth more than Paqueta in 2024

Sure, the Hammers fanbase erupted into euphoria when Jarrod Bowen latched onto Lucas Paqueta's through ball to win the Europa Conference League last season, but that match marked a critical juncture for the club, who had masked a mediocre Premier League term, finishing 14th, with cup triumph – and losing midfield talisman Declan Rice to Arsenal in a club record £105m sale.

Declan Rice with the Europa Conference League trophy for West Ham.

Now, seventh and awaiting Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League quarter-finals, West Ham are much-improved – and that's thanks to some stellar recruitment. The Irons' recent past has been chequered in that regard, but Paqueta, who remains the record signing at £53m, is a bona fide success.

He might be the most expensive West Ham player in existence but it's hard to argue against his quality, and indeed the impact that he has had in bringing silverware and success to the side.

Why Lucas Paqueta's so influential for West Ham

Mohammed Kudus is a star; Edson Alvarez is excelling in holding midfield as he anchors a team nursing the exit of an irreplaceable sensation in Rice, but Paqueta is no doubt West Ham's standout player, having been courted by Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's treble winners approached West Ham with the hope of signing Paqueta in an £80m deal in 2023 but pulled out following concerns vis-a-vis the Brazilian's alleged FA betting breaches.

It's a good thing too, with Paqueta one of the most influential members of the squad; it's no coincidence that the dismal run of form throughout January and February arrived with the 26-year-old sidelined by injury.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 9% of passes attempted across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 6% for progressive passes, the top 1% for tackles, the top 19% for interceptions, the top 13% for clearances and the top 4% for aerial wins per 90.

It's easy to see why Manchester City held a vested interest in signing the £150k-per-week ace, having posted seven goals and six assists in 2023/24 and earned praise for his "mind-boggling" ability by former teammate Rice.

Paqueta might be the guy but there's another South American once on West Ham's books that actually eclipses his market value, were this player to have been sold in today's bloated market.

How much Carlos Tevez would be worth in 2024

As has been made patently obvious by the sizeable header above, that man is Carlos Tevez, who spent just one season kicking a ball about in a West Ham shirt but is undoubtedly one of the most talented strikers to have played for the London club.

A surprise acquisition from Brazilian team Corinthians back in 2006, Tevez arrived with a weight of expectation and enjoyed a decent campaign in the Premier League, scoring seven goals and supplying three assists from just 19 starts during his first season, with his goal on the final day of the term handing his side a 1-0 victory over Manchester United and preserving top-flight status.

Tevez was awarded West Ham's Player of the Year award before completing a two-year loan agreement to Manchester United before finally agreeing in principle for the permanent £32m transfer of the player, seeming to smash the British transfer record at the time.

However, Tevez infamously ditched Old Trafford to join heated city rivals Manchester City following long-standing complications regarding registration with West Ham, eventually ending an interminable saga after 99 matches and 34 goals with Manchester United by signing for the Sky Blues in 2009 for £25.5m.

But what if, theoretically, this all happened in the present? How high might the player's price tag have been? Well, thanks to those over at Totally Money, the numbers have been crunched and it's all been laid out.

Indeed, according to the figure-led site, Tevez would have cost a hefty £60m if the sale all took place in 2024, which might not have beaten the staggering sum that West Ham recouped from Rice's exit but it would have seen him enter a more lucrative realm than that of Paqueta, if not by that much – the latter man currently valued at around €50m (£42m), as per CIES Football Observatory.

This is a remarkable figure but is probably justifiable given the career Tevez would have in the Premier League, scoring 84 goals and supplying 40 assists across 202 fixtures for his respective outfits, enduring a convoluted journey on English shores but proving to be invariably deadly in front of goal, reaching his apex during his first few seasons with City, scoring 43 league goals over two campaigns.

West Ham would sure appreciate a goalscoring machine such as the Argentinian right now, with Michail Antonio nearing the twilight phase of his career and Danny Ings flattering to deceive in front of goal since signing, scoring four goals from 46 matches.

This is all tongue-in-cheek, of course. The fact of the matter is that Tevez last played for West Ham 18 years ago, but it does illuminate the ever-changing game and the money that football is built upon.

Phillips may never wear the shirt again if West Ham unleash exciting teen

David Moyes’ January addition has not been up to scratch in east London…

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 20, 2024

This is evidenced by Rice's cross-London transfer to the Emirates Stadium, moving for an incredible amount despite clearly being worth the hassle, supercharging the Gunners' title challenge.

Tevez might have had his issues at West Ham, but he was well worth the bother too, hailed for his “monster” ability in front of goal by broadcaster Sam Tighe, and Totally Money's valuation only highlights just how good he was.

Grealish endured a difficult 2023-24 campaign for the Cityzens as he managed to score just three goals and provided as many assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. His poor form led to Gareth Southgate dropping him from the 26-member England squad that finished runners-up in the recently concluded Euro 2024. The 28-year-old, however, is using the national team snub to motivate himself to elevate his performance in the upcoming 2024/25 season.

Spurs ace is now well and truly undroppable after 9/10 Luton display

Before the international break, Tottenham Hotspur were handed a reality check by Fulham, suffering a rather frustrating 3-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.

However, the Lilywhites' Champions League dream got back underway this weekend after a fantastic performance against Luton Town.

Dejan Kulusevski for Tottenham

Although the 2-1 scoreline doesn’t reflect a dominant performance, Ange Postecoglou will be pleased with the way his side bounced back from an early deficit to claim the vital three points.

The Australian will also be thrilled with the way one player particularly seized their opportunity to shine after being subbed on at half-time.

Brennan Johnson’s 23/24 campaign

After moving from Nottingham Forest to Spurs in the summer for a large fee of £47.5m, the pressure to succeed was almost instant for Brennan Johnson.

However, the boss has managed his minutes extremely well, playing the Welsh attacker in 26 matches, with 18 of those being starts.

Brennan Johnson in action for Tottenham.

Despite only being at the club for a short period, Johnson is already proving to be a smart signing, with his four goals and seven assists being a respectable output.

That said, the number 22 has been particularly impactful over the last month, picking up two assists against Crystal Palace and scoring the second goal against Aston Villa, but his performance against Luton Town yesterday may have been his best in a Spurs shirt.

Postecoglou’s side returned to winning ways after the international break after yet another turnaround.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 30, 2024 Brennan Johnson is now undroppable after Luton Display

Yesterday, Tottenham went into the break with a one-goal deficit after a rather frustrating first half against the Hatters, and at half-time, Johnson was called upon by Postecoglou. The Wales international certainly didn’t let his boss down, putting in a performance that surely made him undroppable from now until the end of the season.

To put into context just how game-changing the former Forest ace was, the Evening Standard handed him a 9/10 rating, stating that “he immediately made an impact”.

The ace, who’s been playing on both flanks this season, played a huge part in both goals that eventually gave Tottenham the win, firstly putting in a lovely whipped cross that Issa Kabore slammed into his own net just five minutes after his entrance.

Johnson continued to be Spurs’ biggest threat for the remainder of the tie, completing three key passes and adding intensity to the attacking play via his unstoppable dribbling.

The 22-year-old also won all of his ground duels and could have had a goal to his name had the ball not been cleared off the line. Luckily, he was on hand to set up the winning goal in the 86th minute, showing tremendous vision and composure to lay the ball off to Son Heung-min, who converted from near the penalty spot.

Johnson’s substitution certainly changed the game completely, and he will have surely worked his way into Postecoglou’s best starting lineup, with that right-wing role set to be his instead of Dejan Kulusevski's going forward.

'Clinical' Glenn Maxwell still in ODI frame – Aaron Finch

The Australia captain’s words follow the allrounder’s match-winning display for Melbourne Stars against Sydney Thunder

Daniel Brettig09-Jan-2020Glenn Maxwell picked a typically opportune time to rattle the Melbourne Stars to a Big Bash League victory at the MCG, leaving his erstwhile Melbourne Renegades rival and now the Australia ODI captain Aaron Finch to explain why the allrounder wasn’t joining him on the plane to India. After a World Cup campaign that fell short of expectations, and a battle with mental-health issues that forced an extended break from the game in the first half of the season, Maxwell is a T20 concern only for the time being, meaning he is with the Stars for the duration of the BBL and will next play for Australia in their next bracket of T20Is ahead of the World Cup on home soil later this year. However, the fact that the next 50-overs World Cup is to be held in India in 2023, a part of the world that Maxwell knows intimately through his many IPL and international campaigns, means that Finch, the national coach Justin Langer and his senior assistant Andrew McDonald will be looking again in the 31-year-old’s direction before the time comes to name the Cup squad.”People look at [that innings] and they see the results and see all the sixes and all the big hitting, but the way he approached it last night was very clinical,” Finch said of Maxwell. “The way that he gave himself a bit of a chance early and then dominated late. Once he’s in, you can’t bowl to him anywhere. He’s got an answer to everything.”It’s never closed, but when you’re picking a side there has to be a spot there. It just comes down to being in the right place at the right time and having the right match-up. You can only pick so many top-three batters. Guys that have been a part of the squad, Shaun Marsh for example, was disappointed as well after playing some great cricket for the last couple of years, but anyone who misses out is disappointed.”For the time being, the selectors have chosen to take a closer look instead at this summer’s breakout Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne, who with his energy, part-time spin bowling and strong footwork against spin looks a useful addition to the white-ball squad, if not quite so explosive as Maxwell can be. Finch said Labuschagne’s burgeoning friendship with Steven Smith should ensure that by the time the team sets up for the first ODI against India he will be well and truly across the team’s plans.”We know that he’s not going to be overawed by the occasion,” Finch said. “He’s come back into Test cricket after missing out at the start of the Ashes and he’s been unbelievable, so hopefully he can continue that. The form that he showed in the one-day games was outstanding domestically.”He’s averaging up around 40 there batting at three, batting at four for Queensland on what’s been traditionally a little bit tougher batting conditions over the last couple of years in domestic cricket. Playing on some slower wickets that spin quite a bit, to be able to come in and do that role really well for Queensland is obviously what’s got him a place in the side, as well as his current form. I don’t see why it wouldn’t translate.”Marnus Labuschagne bowls in the nets•Getty ImagesAustralia’s tour of India for three ODIs in the middle of January will see the BBL take centre-stage, while the players and broadcasters alike get used to being elsewhere during what is usually peak cricket time in the school holidays. Fox Sports has already made its displeasure known at the scheduling of a BBL match directly opposite one of Australia’s matches in India, and for Finch the scenario is not one he has previously contemplated.”It’s something we didn’t expect to come up even a few months ago,” he said. “But obviously there was a few games’ shortfall with India in the last couple of years, so it doesn’t make a difference to us to be honest, if you’re playing one-day cricket anywhere it’s exciting. Would’ve been nice to play a few more internationals at home during this period but it’s just not possible.”Instead, Smith, David Warner, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will be turning out in India, and Finch said that for the bowlers there will be the opportunity to reconnect with white-ball cricket after five Tests, while the batsmen need to make the most of their starts in conditions that ease markedly once the first 20 or so balls have been negotiated.”It’s a place where once you get in – it can be a really tough place to start your innings, the ball can swing early, can spin early. So once you get in it can be a beautiful place to bat, the outfields are obviously rapid, so you make the most of that. Any top-order player, once you get to 20 or 30, you really want to go on and cash in. That’ll be the task for our top four.”[The pace bowlers] were all keen to get on this tour and play as much as they could and keep developing their skills. Especially someone like Josh, who’s been out of the side for quite a while now through injury and workload management at different times. I think the fact they’re all so keen to get over there and do well is really exciting.”
