Mashrafe Mortaza returns to training; could play in Bangabandhu T20 Cup

He could also become available for the ODIs against West Indies next month

Mohammad Isam01-Dec-2020Mashrafe Mortaza bowled in the nets for the first time since recovering from a hamstring injury, with one eye on returning to competitive cricket. Although he is not part of any of the Bangabandhu T20 squads, it was mentioned during the players’ draft that he can join any of the squads after recovering from the injury.Mortaza, whose last competitive appearance was during the Dhaka Premier League in March, has had a rough time since the pandemic began, having tested positive for Covid-19 in June. Members of his family also contracted the virus in the past few months, and he hurt his hamstring while training last month.Tushar Kanti Howlader, the BCB trainer, said that Mortaza bowled four overs in the nets after completing his fitness work on Tuesday.”I am helping him with his return to training,” Howlader said. “He had been doing some work after recovering from Covid, so now he wants to get into a better position, fitness-wise. He is just bowling now. We cannot talk about match fitness just yet. He can be fit if he continues to train in this way. He doesn’t have to work on technique, it’s only his fitness that is the main concern.”Howlader said that Mortaza also lost a lot of weight which could pave the way for a comeback in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, in which eight matches have been played and another 12 league games remain before the playoffs begin on December 14. So far Gazi Group Chattogram have lost Mominul Haque to injury, but any of the five participating teams would love to take Mortaza in their squad.”He has bowled four overs with full run up. I think he is around 84kg, after losing ten kilos,” Howlader said. “He will reduce more, I am sure. I think the match fitness is also up to him. He is Mashrafe, quite different, and he can do a lot of things. It is up to him, if he wants to play. He has to bowl four overs in the middle, so if he can manage it, then he will have match fitness.”Mortaza, who resigned from ODI captaincy earlier this year with a 3-0 win over Zimbabwe, could still become available for the ODI series during West Indies’ scheduled tour of Bangladesh next month.

Jhye Richardson, batsmen set up first win for Perth Scorchers

The seamer kept Adelaide Strikers in check with 3 for 19, before good hands by Roy, Inglis and Marsh steered the chase

Peter Della Penna31-Dec-2020A sharp bowling spell from Jhye Richardson was backed up by a trio of brisk knocks from Jason Roy, Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh as the Perth Strikers secured their first win of the season, beating the Adelaide Strikers by seven wickets. The Strikers never got any momentum with the bat or in the field after losing the toss and being sent in. Richardson struck in the first over to remove Phil Salt, and wickets fell regularly thereafter. Alex Carey top-scored with 82, but the inability of anyone to stay with him resulted in a cautious approach for the majority of his innings. Carey’s strike rate never went past 150 at any stage before Richardson returned at the death to claim him at deep midwicket, snuffing out any hopes of a needed flourish for the Strikers. The Scorchers proceeded to chase the target in ruthless fashion, first with Roy at the top of the order and then as Inglis and Marsh helped the side recover from a brief hiccup to secure the bonus point and the full result. No help for Carey
The Strikers captain looked in good touch early in his knock after arriving in the third over following the dismissals of Salt and Jake Weatherald. After a slightly slow start reaching 10 off 11 balls, he found his rhythm against Andrew Tye in the seventh over, driving him through extra cover off consecutive balls to start the over before a cut shot brought his third boundary in a five-ball sequence. Another lofted drive off Marsh to end the eighth over kept the runs flowing for Carey, and Strikers looked solid at 64 for 2.But when Matt Renshaw fell to start the ninth over on a leading each to mid-on for Aaron Hardie’s second wicket, Carey started to go into a shell. The indecisive approach played a part in the run-out of Jonathan Wells in the 10th, as a drive from Carey was cut off by Roy at extra cover, who relayed to the striker’s end where Wells had sacrificed himself to allow Carey to keep going. However, Strikers went through a 25-ball sequence without a boundary from the 11th to the 15th over. Three balls after Carey brought up his half-century off 42 balls, he broke the streak by driving Fawad Ahmed through cover for four. But the hope of getting back into his early free-flowing mode was dented by the dismissals of Rashid Khan – uppercutting to third man – and Danial Worrall – a skier to mid-on – in subsequent overs. Running out of partners, Carey finally called for the Power Surge to start the 18th. After being dropped by Fawad on a straightforward chance at short third man on 69, he cracked Tye for four and six but perished next over to Richardson as Scorchers kept the momentum heading into the break. Richardson’s key breakthroughs earned him Man of the Match honours.Roy Rolls
The England opener was a battering ram at the top of the order for Scorchers, scoring 27 of the first 28 runs in the chase. He continued to dominate an eventual 57-run opening stand with Liam Livingstone, ending with seven fours and one six.Roy’s confidence was best displayed immediately after the Powerplay in the fifth over against Rashid. Without hesitation, Roy reverse swept Rashid’s first ball for four, not allowing the star leggie a chance to get settled. Roy cracked a short ball for a front-foot six next over off Worrall, and looked set to bring up a half-century before he was undone by a slightly back of a length ball from Wes Agar in the eighth over. Trying to flick to midwicket, a leading edge popped up to Rashid at cover to end his knock. Agar claimed Livingstone two balls later, getting some extra bounce once again to induce a prod away from the body and an edge behind.Inglis and Marsh seal the deal
Strikers were trying to rally back into the game first by denying the Scorchers the Bash Boost Point. Worrall had bowled a tidy over in the 10th, conceding five off the first five balls. Needing a boundary off the last delivery to get the bonus point, Inglis pulled Worrall off his hips past deep fine leg for four. The moment seemed to give the Scorchers an added lift heading into the second half of the chase.Though Rashid claimed Colin Munro lbw on a mistimed sweep in the 11th, Marsh and Inglis showed they were not content to play conservatively for singles to coast across the line. Marsh heaved Agar for six in the 14th over midwicket, then punched him over mid-off for four to bring the required run rate under a run a ball.In a somewhat surprising move, they then took the Power Surge to start the 16th, signalling their positive intent. Inglis then cut Agar’s first ball in the sequence for four before Marsh flicked two misdirected yorkers through fine leg for another pair of boundaries. Inglis then iced the game with consecutive drives off Danny Briggs over cover and back down the pitch in the 18th to end the match with 14 balls to spare.

He’s better than Roberts: Leeds set to launch move for "quality" ace

Leeds United are slowly but surely adding in a couple of new faces here and there to their ranks this transfer window, with Joe Rothwell joining Daniel Farke's camp as the most recent capture.

That followed on from the low-key signing of Alex Cairns joining from Salford City to help bolster the Whites in the goalkeeper positions, as supporters of the West Yorkshire side now look forward to the first high-profile purchase arriving at Elland Road.

This could come in the form of a new right-back joining Farke's group shortly, with no planned deal in place for Connor Roberts to return.

Leeds looking at £7m rated signing

According to football journalist Mike McGrath, Leeds are 'set to move' for Sheffield United right-back Jayden Bogle this transfer window, to finally sort out issues that have been plaguing the Championship side for some time down that flank.

Archie Gray filled in here on numerous occasions last campaign, but with the 18-year-old sensation now on the books at Tottenham Hotspur, it's no surprise to see Farke and Co deliberating now on what they want in this position ahead of the season to come.

It won't be straightforward for Leeds to land their desired target in Bogle, however, with football journalist Alan Nixon reporting that the recently relegated Blades want the Whites to cough up £7m to consider parting ways.

As it stands, the West Yorkshire outfit are allegedly way off spending that much to secure the services of the right-back.

Jaden Bogle for Sheffield United.

The second-tier promotion hopefuls could still go all out to win Bogle, despite this recent stumbling block over a price, with football journalist Graham Smyth also adding fuel to the fire surrounding Leeds' drawn-out hunt for a new body at right-back, when he revealed that an imminent move for Roberts wasn't on the cards.

The in-demand 23-year-old could even be viewed as an upgrade on his Burnley counterpart when you consider their 23/24 seasons against each other.

What Bogle can offer Leeds

As can be seen in the strike Bogle managed to bag against Manchester City last August, the ex-Derby County defender is unafraid to get forward and help out in attacks, which will suit the attacking mentality Farke likes his sides to play with.

The Blades number 20 has 12 goals next to his name from 103 games playing in South Yorkshire, with an impressive 115 games accumulated in the Championship alone on his career CV, where he's tallied up 16 assists too.

On the contrary, Roberts – when looking at last campaign in isolation – really struggled to nail down a starting spot in the Leeds ranks away from any past second-tier heroics, with just an average of 27 minutes per game handed to him by Farke, which is reflected in his poor numbers in the table above.

Bogle can at least hold his head somewhat high with his numbers from what was a car crash season for all those involved with Chris Wilder's men, with his 4.8 total duels won on average per game actually bettering the likes of Sam Byram who routinely stepped up last season at right-back too for Leeds, but has just 4.4 duels as his lesser average.

Connor Roberts

Roberts will just aim to bounce back with Burnley, who are now in the same division as Leeds, with new manager Scott Parker perhaps taking a shining to the Welshman.

Whereas, Farke and Co will have to weigh up whether an ambitious £7m swoop for Bogle is truly worth it, knowing the expensive 23-year-old – who was once labelled as a "quality" player by Blades boss Wilder – could fix many a selection dilemma moving forward.

On Monday, a video went viral on social media showing a man alleged to be Premier League referee Coote launching an X-rated rant against Liverpool and their former coach Jurgen Klopp. He was heard calling the Reds "sh*t" and labelling Klopp a “German c***”. Soon after the video surfaced online, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), who are responsible for the officiating of games across English football, suspended Coote while confirming they are looking into the matter.

Now report that the match official could face an aggravated misconduct charge from the FA, who are also now investing the controversial video. As per current FA rules, an "aggravated breach" includes a reference "whether express or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin and/or nationality". Thus, allegedly referencing Klopp's nationality could land Coote in deep trouble.

Coote has been a referee in the English top-flight since April 2018. Last Saturday, he oversaw Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, which ensured that the Merseyside outfit went into the November international break five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Cantwell 2.0: Rangers to launch move to sign "exciting" ÂŁ15m talent

Glasgow Rangers suffered another pre-season defeat over the weekend, losing 2-0 at Murrayfield.

While pre-season results aren’t exactly important, the fact that several players who looked like they could depart Ibrox this summer managed to find a place in the Rangers starting XI was rather worrying.

Philippe Clement desperately needs to sign another few players ahead of the Gers' Premiership opener against Hearts. Could he be set to raid the Championship in the coming days?

Rangers eye move for Championship winger

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Rangers are “readying a new move” to sign Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth Argyle this summer.

In January 2023, Michael Beale had an offer rejected by Swansea City, then his parent club, for the English winger, but it now looks as though interest has been reignited.

The Light Blues are screaming out for some quality on the flanks and there is no doubt that Whittaker – who has an asking price of £15m – would give Clement something extra out wide.

It wouldn’t be the first time the club have signed someone from the Championship. Could they repeat their Todd Cantwell masterclass?

Why Morgan Whittaker could be Todd Cantwell 2.0

Beale may have endured a torrid ten-month spell in the Ibrox hot seat, but he did make a few decent signings, Cantwell among them.

Since arriving in Scotland 18 months ago, the former Norwich City gem has made 64 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals and grabbing 12 assists in the process.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

When fit and firing, the former Norwich man is a wonderful option to have, yet he was inconsistent at times during the 2023/24 campaign due to occasionally playing out wide on the right in an unfamiliar position.

Whittaker could offer something that the club struggled with last term – goals from the wide areas.

Last season for Plymouth, Whittaker scored a remarkable 20 times for the club in all competitions. Add in a further nine assists, and it is clear he poses a dangerous threat on the right flank.

When compared to his positional peers in leagues similar to the English Championship, the spritely winger ranked in the top 7% for non-penalty goals (0.43) and the top 2% for total shots (3.78) per 90, more evidence of how effective he is in the final third.

Former Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher hailed the youngster upon signing a permanent deal with the Pilgrims last summer, claiming he was “one of the most exciting prospects in the EFL” and, given how impressive a season the winger went on to have, this was certainly backed up.

Taking out Abdallah Sima’s goal tally of 16 from last term, the highest-scoring winger was Rabbi Matondo with six goals. This clearly isn’t good enough heading into the new season.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Whittaker has proven that he has what it takes to make an impression in the English second tier. A move to Ibrox from the EFL – like Cantwell – wouldn’t faze him in the slightest and the chance to perform at a higher level could see him take his game to the next level.

Rangers could land "impressive" signing who's a dream Cantwell replacement

The Light Blues are reportedly keen on a deal to sign the talented teenage maestro.

'Yes I'm in pain, but I'm playing for my country' – George Linde

He saw bone through the skin of his little finger in the first innings, but has picked up 3 for 12 in the second so far

Firdose Moonda06-Feb-2021George Linde thought his season was over when he saw bone through the skin of his little finger while fielding in his follow through in Pakistan’s first innings during the second Test.It was his third over, and the 23rd of the match, when Babar Azam drove the ball straight back to Linde, who reached out to stop it as it clipped his left hand and rolled away. With spots of blood visible on his whites, Linde immediately left the field, fearing the worst.”I started running off when I saw bone sticking out and I just popped it in myself,” he said, without flinching. “I went for X-rays and for some reason my finger wasn’t broken. I was quite happy with that.”Not just happy, but hopeful that he would still be able to play a part in the Test.On the same day, with his finger stitched and a dressing wrapped around it, Linde was seen practising and trying to adjust his grip. The next day he returned to bowl two overs. The day after that, he made a run-a-ball 21 and bowled another nine, in which he took three wickets for 12 runs to keep South Africa in the game. He admitted he was in some pain. but not enough to keep him out of the game.”I always say you never know when you will get another opportunity to play for your country. It’s not going to get me down, because it’s just pain. There are people who are sick at home, people who are losing their jobs, people who are dying from Covid or other diseases or something. My injury is nothing compared to that,” he said. “Yes, I’m in pain, but I’m fighting it because I’m playing for my country. I’m not going to stand back for anything just because my finger hurts a little. It hurts for ten minutes, then you get an injection and then you go on.”

“There are people who are sick at home, people who are losing their jobs, people who are dying from Covid or other diseases or something. My injury is nothing compared to that.”GEORGE LINDE

Linde is playing in just his third Test match, 15 months after making his debut in India and, with all his appearances coming in the subcontinent, is justified in wondering when his next cap might come. Not only do South Africa have no more Tests scheduled this summer but the state of the FTP means their next trip to Asia is uncertain, and even home fixtures are not confirmed. When they are, Linde’s place isn’t, because South Africa tend to play one specialist spinner at home and Keshav Maharaj is their first-choice.That means Linde has to make the most of the chances he’s been given, even if that means changing things about the the way he bowls. In this match, he has to remember a little something extra every time he prepares to deliver a ball. “I had to make a small adjustment with the grip. I didn’t even know I use my pinkie (little finger) when I bowl. It’s weird because every time I bowl, I have to first lift it up a little bit to get a better grip,” he said.So far, so good, with Linde appearing in full control in the second innings. He accounted for the wickets of Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam and Faheem Ashraf, who he could have dismissed for a duck had Dean Elgar held on to a catch at slip.South Africa put down three catches in total and allowed the Pakistan lead to swell to 200, but Linde doesn’t think the match has got away from them yet. “It’s quite difficult to get wickets here, especially against a good opposition. We bowled well and were maybe a bit unlucky with a couple of dropped catches,” he said. “But we are hungry to win this Test match. I’m pretty confident the batsmen will take us over the line in the next innings.”Asked what he thinks is chaseable on a pitch with variable bounce and where reverse swing could come into play, Linde was bullish and believes South Africa could still have another hundred runs to play with. “Anything under 300, we will take. Hopefully it will be 250, or 220 or 230. I think realistically under 270 or around 300,”he said. “I am pretty confident we will chase down.”

"I was at home and I didn’t even realise what was going on," he said. "He just sent me a long text message that you could feel was coming from his heart. Afterwards, when he came back to the training ground for pre season, he just like felt really sorry and almost like cried when he apologised publicly and also personally as well. It felt like he feels really sorry. We’re all human and make mistakes, and we learn from it. But I love Rodrigo. I love him, I love him. You know, he made a mistake. But I have no problem at all. At all."

Bad news for Beto: Everton battling to land ÂŁ42k-p/w "monster"

It’s been a very busy summer at Goodison Park for Everton, with the Toffees already securing deals for five players ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

Jake O’Brien joins Jack Harrison, Tim Iroegbunam, Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom on Merseyside, with Sean Dyche conducting shrewd business amid the current financial situation at the club.

Lindstrom, in particular, is an excellent addition, providing an added creative spark in the final third, helping the Toffees combat their struggle in front of goal having registered 28 goals and assists in 80 games for Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Danish midfielder has joined on loan from Napoli with an option to buy next summer, allowing him to regain regular first-team action as he looks to push on following a disappointing campaign in Serie A which saw him feature for just 417 minutes last season.

He could form an exciting partnership with another talent who’s been linked with a move to Everton, and it’s safe to say, it’s not the first time he’s been touted with a move to Merseyside in recent years.

Everton could sign attacking talent this summer

According to Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness, Everton are one of a number of Premier League clubs named as a possible destination for Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia this summer.

Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia

The 27-year-old, who earns £42k-per-week, as per Capology, also has admirers from Brentford, Newcastle United and West Ham – with the report claiming the forward is set for a Premier League move ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The report claims that there has yet to be any approach or offers made by Everton for Dia, but given their previous interest in the Senegalese talent, a move is yet to be ruled out.

A move for a new striker could be on the cards for Dyche’s side this summer, with Dia proving to be a better option than one player currently plying his trade at Goodison.

Why Dia would be a better option than Beto for Everton

12 months ago, Everton forked out £25m on Portuguese forward Beto, in the hope he could be the club’s main centre forward for many years to come.

However, his first campaign in England didn’t go as either party would’ve expected, with Beto limited to substitute appearances for the vast majority of last season.

He only made nine starts after his big-money transfer, with each start costing the Toffees £2.7m last season when breaking down his transfer fee.

When comparing the current Everton man – who has already been linked with a swift exit from Goodison – to transfer target Dia, it’s clear that the Salernitana star would be an upgrade on the former Udinese talisman.

The Senegalese “monster” as described by journalist Jonas Adnan Giaever, featured in 14 fewer matches than the Everton man last season, but scored one more goal – handing the Toffees an added goalscoring threat in the final third.

Dia has also managed to get more of his attempts on target, whilst dominating with the ball at his feet, proving he could be the player to provide the link-up play that Dyche is looking for in a centre forward.

He achieved an 84% pass accuracy rate, whilst Beto could only manage a 62% completion rate – with the Salernitana man having the edge over the 26-year-old Everton forward.

Boulaye Dia for Senegal

Whilst it’s unknown how much a deal for Dia would cost Dyche and his side, it would be an excellent signing and one that could give his side more of a cutting edge in attacking areas, with the opportunity to freshen up the attack with another Serie A import, alongside Lindstrom.

Beto unfortunately hasn’t lived up to the levels expected upon his arrival last year, but he still has the potential to make an impact as a sub, but could fall further down the pecking order should Dia move to Goodison this summer.
