Gary Wilson, Ireland's veteran wicketkeeper-batsman, retires to take up coaching role

Wicketkeeper-batsman played a total of 292 matches for his country in a 16-year career

Matt Roller19-Mar-2021Gary Wilson, Ireland’s long-serving wicketkeeper-batsman, has called time on his professional career and taken up a role as head coach and pathway manager for North-West Warriors in the interprovincial set-up.Wilson made 188 appearances across his Test, ODI and T20I careers, and a further 104 for the national team in matches without full international status, making him Ireland’s third most capped player of all time. His career overlapped with those of fellow keepers Niall O’Brien and, more recently, Lorcan Tucker, but he took the gloves for the majority of his international career and his ability with the bat in the middle order meant that he was a regular in the side even when he was overlooked behind the stumps. He was part of the Ireland squad at seven major ICC events – two 50-over World Cups and five World T20s – and captained the side in the T20 World Cup qualifiers in late 2019, which earned them their spot in the tournament later this year.Wilson also enjoyed a long career in county cricket. He was on the books at Surrey for more than a decade after graduating from the MCC Young Cricketers programme, captaining the club 33 times across formats between 2014 and 2015, and later spent two seasons at Derbyshire, where he captained the side in the T20 Blast.

“To step away from international cricket after 16 years is something I will miss dearly – I will miss the guys probably more than anything, but pulling on the shirt and playing for Ireland was the only thing I ever dreamed of growing up,” Wilson said. “To have played for Ireland 292 times is something I am very proud of – if I had thought I’d have made it 10 times growing up I would have snapped your hand off, so 292 times is something I’m very proud of.”To be named T20 captain for Ireland in 2018 was probably my proudest moment internationally. Again, growing up it was something I could only dream of. As for achievements, obviously the various World Cups and T20 World Cups, but probably my best game in an Irish shirt came in a World Cup match against UAE in Brisbane. There were so many memorable games over the years – the Zimbabwe game in the same World Cup was probably my favourite game to be part of.”I was lucky enough to have such a long career in England. I was actually a Surrey supporter growing up as well, so to be able to play for them at The Oval for over 10 years, and to captain them and win the County Championship Division 2, to win a CB40 and get to T20 finals day twice – they were things I never thought I’d ever had a chance to do as a kid. I’m so grateful for the opportunity that I had to play for Surrey and Derbyshire.Related

“Coaching is always something I’ve thought of once I finished playing. What’s exciting about it here in Ireland is the impact I think I can have – the opportunity to improve players. I’m really passionate about Irish cricket and hopefully can help bring through the next generation and see Ireland flourish in the future really excites me.”Andy Balbirnie, Ireland’s captain, said: “Gary was a brilliant team-mate and a great friend to have – a guy who you would never hesitate to chat to about anything on or off the field. He was one of those people who, every time he pulled on the jersey, wore his heart on his sleeve, always leading by example in everything we were trying to do as a team.”Within the set-up, he was one who would always offer to help develop the next crop of young Irish cricketers. I have no doubt he will be a successful coach and I’m looking forward to seeing his progress. We are very fortunate to have someone like Gary still involved in Irish cricket and long may it continue.”

Keane has hit the headlines once again after an altercation with a fan at Portman Road. A video circulating on social media shows the Manchester United legend appearing to say "I'll wait for you in the car park," while Ipswich fan Neil Finbow has claimed to be the supporter involved and has claimed Keane offered him out after the game. Sky Sports are now investigating and have asked fellow pundits Jamie Redknapp, Izzy Christensen as well as presenter Kelly Cates for their view of the incident, according to .

Keane has been involved in a fan confrontation previously during media work. Arsenal supporter Scott Law was handed a three-year footballing ban and a fine after being found guilty of assaulting the former midfielder in the aftermath of a Gunners' win over Manchester United at the Emirates. Sky Sports are not expected to take action against Keane but may boost security for their staff in the wake of the incident.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Finbow has offered a bit more detail on the incident to the Daily Mail: "[Jamie Redknapp] didn't really step in. He was just sort of talking to Roy from behind. I can't remember him coming in and pulling him away. Roy was sort of pointing in this guy's face. There was no security or anything, which I was surprised about. Roy was directing his comments towards the fan who had the big issue because of his kids. There were a few choice words said about that. We were surprised he came over because you've got a lot of ex-players and managers that come down here. They all get stick, but I was as shocked as anybody when Roy came over."

Newcastle could now make ÂŁ10m+ move for winger who plays like Eden Hazard

Newcastle United could be gifted the chance to sign a £10 million-plus winger who plays in a similar style to former Chelsea winger Eden Hazard.

The Magpies have probably been quieter than their fans expected when it came to this summer’s transfer window. Since the club’s takeover, Newcastle have been making big moves in the transfer market, and while they have made some fresh additions this time around, it could be argued they haven’t been at the level expected.

Despite the Premier League season getting underway in a few days, Eddie Howe and co. still have plenty of time to get some new signings into the club. It appears at this stage that the club’s priority remains getting a deal done for defender Marc Guehi, with talks still ongoing over an agreement. But given a recent development concerning Miguel Almiron, Newcastle could have to enter the market for a new winger.

Latest Newcastle United injury news, return dates and suspensions

FFC keeps you up to date with all the latest Newcastle news involving injuries as they face Sheffield United in the Premier League.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 26, 2024 Miguel Almiron could leave Newcastle United

Almiron joined the Magpies in January 2019 from MLS side Atlanta, and he was relatively unknown at the time, but has since grown into a very important player for the club. However, his time at St. James’ Park could be about to come to an end, as he’s emerged on the radar of an MLS team.

dan-burn-miguel-almiron-newcastle-opinion

It was reported by Fabrizio Romano that executives of Charlotte FC are in London to start talks over an ambitious move to sign Almiron in this transfer window. It is described as not being an easy deal to do, but an approach has been made to Newcastle. Time is not on Charlotte FC’s side, as the MLS window shuts on Wednesday.

This development regarding Almiron could force Newcastle into the market for a replacement, and if that is the case, a name has emerged as a potential option.

Newcastle offered the chance to sign Rayan Cherki

Newcastle have been on the lookout for a new right-sided forward for most of this summer, even before Almiron started to be linked with a move away from the club. But financial restrictions have meant the Magpies’ business has been limited, and they could be about to be offered a bargain deal.

Lyon's Rayan Cherki

According to Chronicle Live, one player who could come onto the radar of Newcastle in what remains of this transfer window is Lyon winger Rayan Cherki. Cherki was close to a move to Borussia Dortmund, but talks stalled over a €15 million transfer (£12m), and now, according to The Athletic, the French side are actively looking for new suitors to take up that deal.

The Chronicle's report claims Newcastle is a possible landing spot, with the Magpies' scouting team sure to be doing their due diligence at the very least.

Cherki has gained a reputation for being a mercurial talent on the ball over his first few years in the senior game. Speaking to TNT Sports, Martin Mosnier compared the 20 year-old to Hatem Ben Arfa and Eden Hazard.

The pundit said, via the Liverpool Echo: “Cherki is an exceptional dribbler. One of the first things one notices when watching him is that he appears to be ambipedal, as he can seemingly utilise both feet equally well.

"His strengths are as follows: key passes, dribbling and his ability to create something out of nothing. He could very well become a Premier League star like Eden Hazard, but I think it's still too early for him to leave."

Imagine him & Trent: Liverpool join the race to sign big-money PL star

All things considered, Liverpool have passed the pre-season test with flying colours, whatever that actually is. Arne Slot has a herculean task on his hands in succeeding Jurgen Klopp, but his ideology has taken root and there is much promise at his embryonic stage.

Liverpool petered out somewhat at the end of the 2023/24 season but still restored their Champions League status and won the Carabao Cup, with Klopp's 'Liverpool 2.0' up and running.

Indeed the only Premier League club yet to make a signing, supporters are yearning for some added impetus; Slot has inherited a talented squad but it is not without its gaps, with the backline one of the most pressing concerns.

Liverpool's hunt for a defender

According to reports relayed by Sky Sports, Liverpool have joined the race for Marc Guehi, who has recently been the subject of intense interest from Newcastle United.

The Crystal Palace centre-back, who starred for England at Euro 2024, is valued at £75m after a steep rise over the past year, now regarded as one of the Premier League's finest rising defenders.

FSG have likely baulked at such a hefty price tag, but could use Joe Gomez as a makeweight in any potential transfer, as has been reported to be the case during Liverpool's negotiations with the Magpies for Anthony Gordon, earlier in the summer.

Football FanCast's Team of the Tournament for Euro 2024.

Why Marc Guehi would be a great fit for Liverpool

Guehi's composure and inner belief have married into his skilled ability, notable across strength, stamina and technique metrics. His mentality and calming influence could be the perfect fit for Slot's Liverpool, especially when digging deeper into the club's circumstances.

England defender Marc Guehi

A product of Chelsea's youth academy, Guehi made the decision to move to Selhurst Park after impressing on a string on loan adventures, completing an £18m transfer in 2021 and never looking back.

Palace have ebbed and flowed over the past several years but have always tread water above the dreaded drop zone, with Guehi's steely, commanding defensive displays going a long way toward maintaining such stability.

And of course, the Eagles appear to have hit the jackpot with the appointment of Oliver Glasner back in February, the Austrian coach transforming the side and creating an attack-focused, slick and stylish unit.

Guehi missed much of his football as he nursed a knee injury, but his efforts under Roy Hodgson still earned him a place in Gareth Southgate's Three Lions squad this summer, where he was arguably England's finest performer.

Be it club or country, he is sturdy without the ball and elegant with it at his feet. He's been described as a "beast" of a player by talent scout Jacek Kulig and it's clear to see why.

His languid style draws comparisons to that of Virgil van Dijk, with the easy defensive game and underrated ball-playing ability perhaps playing to the strengths of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

An exciting partnership with Trent

Guehi proved at the Euros his faculty for passing, thriving with his crisp, error-free displays from the rear. England lacked fluency in Germany but it was certainly no fault of Guehi.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

He scarcely got to play with Liverpool's homegrown sensation, but his nature could ensure that Liverpool's playmaking talisman thrives this season, under new management.

Widely regarded as one of the most talented technicians in football, Alexander-Arnold ranks among the top 12% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 5% for assists, the top 1% for shot-creating actions and passes attempted and the top 2% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, emphasising that very point.

The 25-year-old has long been criticised for an ostensibly weak defensive game, and while it is untrue that he is a poor defender, it's certainly not his strong suit, winning just 45% of his contested duels in the Premier League last season.

Moreover, since he has started to drive into the middle of the park when Liverpool hold possession and are on the attack, he could benefit immensely from a titan like Guehi to offer protection.

Alexander-Arnold's midfield experiment for his country this summer failed, but that's evidence enough that the right system needs to be implemented to ensure such success – Guehi, in Slot's budding Liverpool set-up, could indeed be the missing piece.

The "absolute tank" – as former England U21 teammate Josef Bursik once dubbed him – would provide Liverpool with the kind of defensive fortitude that is needed for success under Slot's wing.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

But perhaps more importantly, he would reinforce Liverpool's backline and allow Alexander-Arnold to foray forward and unleash his creative influence with confidence.

If Liverpool let Newcastle snap this talented player up, they might just live to regret it…

Nissanka 103, Dickwella 96 set West Indies 375 for first-Test victory

Debut century and keeper’s highest score put Sri Lanka in control of first Test in Antigua

Madushka Balasuriya24-Mar-2021 Pathum Nissanka’s century on debut – the fourth Sri Lankan to achieve the feat, the first since Thilan Samaraweera in 2001, and the first to do so overseas – and an equally vital 96 from Niroshan Dickwella, crowned a dominant day for Sri Lanka, in which they seized command of the first Test, and put themselves in prime position to secure a first win in the format in over a year. The pair’s 179-run stand for the sixth wicket, compiled over two sessions, helped set the West Indies a 375-run target, 34 of which the hosts had knocked off by stumps for the loss of just John Campbell. Kraigg Brathwaite and Nkrumah Bonner were at the crease on 8 and 15 respectively. The day though belonged unequivocally to Nissanka, whose low-risk, high-impact innings, together with an unusually measured effort from Dickwella, had taken Sri Lanka from a precarious position at the start of the day – following Alzari Joseph’s early removal of Dhananjaya de Silva – to one of complete control. That eventuality though would hardly have been at the forefront of the pair’s minds when they came together in the first over of the morning, with Sri Lanka’s lead still a fledgling 157. As the last two recognised batsmen, they would have known any misstep by either would expose a very long tail – the swiftness with which the innings folded following Nissanka’s dismissal more than justifying those concerns. But if patience and application was the need of the hour, the duo produced that in spades. Nissanka’s 103 came off 252 deliveries, more or less encapsulating the safety-first approach he had woven into the very fabric of his innings; in fact, less than a fifth of his runs came in boundaries, while West Indies must be sick of the sight of his unwavering forward defence.Indeed, rarely has a Test century contained such few noteworthy moments – though this is by no means a criticism. Sure, there was a fairly dismissive pull off Kyle Mayers, and then, earlier, a lovely punch through the covers off Kemar Roach, but for the most part this was an innings of dabs, prods, glides and drives (though none that reached the fence) – and crucially, almost no risk. But after a first-innings capitulation that had seen many of Sri Lanka’s batsman fall, as much down to a lack of application as it was to probing lines employed by the West Indian bowlers, Nissanka’s innings was a refreshing change of pace.At 22 years of age, and in foreign conditions, there is hardly likely to have been a more pleasing sight to Mickey Arthur and Grant Flower than the solidity showcased during his knock. In a way it was fitting that when he eventually did fall, it was on his own terms, going for a slog sweep in an attempt to up the scoring rate.Arguably even more pleasing to the Lankan coaches might have been Dickwella’s innings. While his dismissal four runs short of maiden Test century will have undoubtedly been a mood-killer, the maturity and control up until then was definitely a side many thought they might never see of the man.Now obviously his innings was not one without peril (what Dickwella innings is?) – he was dropped at gully, chopped the ball back onto his stumps without the bails being dislodged, and also survived a caught-behind appeal after West Indies had burned their reviews – but for the most part it was restrained. He would only truly free his arms once the lead had ballooned beyond 300, though his innings was cut short before he could to do too much more damage, edging a slower ball from Roach back onto his stumps. By that point though it was already likely too late. But the fact that the final five Sri Lankan wickets fell for just 38 runs will certainly leave the hosts wondering what might have been had a few pivotal moments gone their way. There’s also bound to be introspection surrounding the wisdom of some of their reviews – their last in particular, after Nissanka had got a clear edge on an lbw call, the most poorly conceived, and ultimately serving to reprieve Dickwella. If any of those had gone the way of the hosts, we would likely be looking at a very different equation, but as it stands staving off defeat on the final day will be West Indies’ primary concern.

'Good news for the league!' – Arne Slot delighted by Pep Guardiola's decision to extend Man City contract as Liverpool boss praises 'one of the best managers football has ever had'

Guardiola signed a new two-year deal with City earlier this week, just when it looked like he may leave next summer when his contract was set to expire. Reds boss Slot says the Spaniard staying put is great for the division, as having the best managers and players in the English top-flight makes everything better.

He told reporters on Friday: "That is good news for City, first of all, and also good news for the league because I think everybody wants to have the best managers possible over here and the best players over here – and he is definitely one of the best managers, maybe the best manager, in the league. If you look at what he did in the last few years, four times champions in a row, it’s fair to say that he is maybe the best manager in the league. So, that is a good thing, but on the other hand they have so many quality players that if he had made the choice to leave the club I wouldn’t have expected them to have ended up bottom of the league next season. Yes, good for the City fans and interesting for us as managers to keep on facing one of the best managers football has ever had."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guardiola has brought City unprecedented success over the best part of a decade, winning a hatful of Premier League titles and the Champions League as well. The 53-year-old has said he wants to win more trophies with the English champions and while Slot may be happy Guardiola is not moving on just yet, it is harder to win trophies with his new rival on the scene.

Waqar Younis granted leave, to miss Zimbabwe series for his wife's surgery in Sydney

The Pakistan bowling coach will rejoin the squad for the white-ball series in England

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Apr-2021Waqar Younis, Pakistan’s bowling coach, has been released from the squad to be with his wife, who will be undergoing a surgery soon, and will miss the series in Zimbabwe as a result. He is presently in Harare and will leave for home in Sydney on Tuesday. He is expected to join the team for their next assignment, a white-ball series in England in July; the team is scheduled to leave Pakistan on June 23.The surgery is due early next month, but the mandatory quarantine on reaching Australia means Younis will only be able to be with his wife at the time of the surgery. The PCB hasn’t named a temporary replacement for Pakistan’s series of three T20Is and two Tests, all in Harare – the first T20I is on April 21, while the last Test starts May 7.Younis hasn’t been with his family in Sydney for ten months, because of Pakistan’s busy home-and-away schedule. When there was a gap, in September last year, he had tried to return home. But after landing in Australia, he had to serve a quarantine in a hotel and on the eighth day of his quarantine, his father died in Lahore. So he flew back to Pakistan instead to attend the funeral.Later, after Pakistan’s Boxing Day Test in Mount Maunganui, he had called his family to Lahore, but the Covid-19 situation put paid to those plans too.Younis, 49, took over as Pakistan’s bowling coach in September 2019, and has since worked with Misbah-ul-Haq, the head coach. This is his fifth stint in the Pakistan support staffers’ team, having served twice as the head coach – 2010 to 2011 and 2014 to 2016 – and as the bowling coach in 2006-07, and the bowling and fielding coach briefly in 2009-10.

Rodgers could land Kuhn 2.0 in Celtic swoop for "outstanding" star

It remains to be seen how busy Brendan Rodgers and his recruitment team will be at Celtic before the end of the summer transfer window next week.

The Hoops have made four permanent additions to the group so far, with Viljami Sinisalo, Kasper Schmeichel, Paulo Bernardo, and Adam Idah all coming through the door.

Idah and Bernardo were on loan at Parkhead last summer and were immediately pursued as permanent signings, whilst Sinisalo and Schmeichel have arrived to compete for the number one spot.

There could be a major departure from Glasgow this week, though, as The Scottish Sun reports that Brighton are in talks over a £25m+ deal to sign Matt O'Riley.

The report claims that a medical could take place before the weekend if the two teams can reach an agreement on the fee in the next few days.

This could bolster the club's pot of funds to work with between now and next Friday's deadline, which could allow Rodgers to make further additions in multiple positions.

The Scottish giants could yet dip into the market to improve their options in the wide areas and one of their reported targets may now be more attainable…

Celtic target wants to move

According to BBC Sport, Norwich City winger Abu Kamara has formally submitted a transfer request to the club ahead of next week's deadline.

The report claims that the England U20 international wants to complete a move away from Carrow Road this summer, with Hull City and Portsmouth mentioned as potential destinations.

Pink'Un journalist Paddy Davitt adds that there are currently no bids on the table for the left-footed wizard, and added that the Canaries do not have an interest in cashing in on him. However, it remains to be seen whether or not this transfer request will change their stance.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Celtic are one of the teams keeping tabs on the 21-year-old attacker's situation in Norfolk, ahead of a potential swoop for his services.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops are prepared to come in with an official offer for his services, now that Kamara has asked to move on from Norwich.

There is also no mention of how much the English Championship team would demand for their academy graduate, should any team come in with a bid.

If the Scottish Premiership champions do decide to pursue a move for Kamara, potentially based on this latest update, then Rodgers could unearth his next version of Nicolas Kuhn, who has enjoyed a strong start to the season.

Why Nicolas Kuhn is an important player for Celtic

The German winger joined the Hoops in January from Rapid Wien on a permanent basis and showed plenty of signs of promise in his first five months in Glasgow.

Kuhn produced two goals and two assists in 14 appearances and nine starts in the Premiership, which shows that he made a somewhat instant impact with four goal contributions in just nine starts.

Nicolas Kuhn

His assist tally could also have been higher if his teammates had made the most of his impressive creativity, as the forward created five 'big chances' and made 18 key passes in the division.

It was an eye-catching start to his career with Celtic and he has now had a full pre-season ahead of his first full campaign with the Scottish giants.

Kuhn produced two goals and one assist in three pre-season matches, with all three of those contributions coming in a 4-3 win over Manchester City.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old talent has enjoyed a superb start to the Premiership season, with three goal contributions in two games.

The German wizard also scored and registered an assist in the 3-1 win over Hibernian in the League Cup on Sunday, which means that he has been directly involved in five goals in three competitive matches for the Hoops this term.

A left-footed right winger, Kuhn has excelled at drifting inside from a wide position to make things happen on his strong foot and Celtic could land a similar type of player by signing Kamara.

Why Abu Kamara could be Nicolas Kuhn 2.0

Just like the Celtic star, the England youth international is a left-footed forward who predominantly plays on the right side of the attack, although he can also play through the middle as a centre-forward or on the left wing.

This means that, whilst he may be an understudy to Kuhn at first, he can be utilised in a number of roles by Rodgers as a rotation option this season.

The 21-year-old whiz has only started one game for Norwich this season, against Stevenage in the League Cup, and contributed with a goal and an assist.

Last term, the Canaries academy graduate spent the year on loan with Portsmouth in League One and showcased his ability to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

As you can see in the table above, Kamara was directly involved in 18 goals in 37 starts for Pompey, which extended to 21 in 41 in all competitions – thanks to one assist in one League Cup start and two goals in three EFL Trophy starts.

The English youngster, who was dubbed "outstanding" by Portsmouth coach Jon Harley, has made fantastic first steps into senior football after an impressive academy career, with 31 goals and seven assists in 50 appearances for Norwich at U21 level.

These statistics show that Kamara has caught the eye as a scorer and a creator of goals at youth level, in League One, and in the League Cup this season for the Canaries.

Chelsea have already officially completed the signings of Joao Felix, Mike Penders, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, Estevao Willian, Filip Jorgensen, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Omari Kellyman and Pedro Neto – spending a total of around £271 million (including their £51m deal for Estevao, who'll join in 2025).

Despite their 12 confirmed summer arrivals, there is another position which Maresca and co are eager to strengthen before the transfer window cut-off on August 31. Indeed, a flurry of reports in the last few weeks have shared that Chelsea remain in the market for a talismanic new number nine.

The Blues were heavily reliant on both Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson for the majority of their goals last campaign, with both players scoring a combined 43 goals in all competitions throughout 2023/2024.

What many believe Chelsea are missing, though, is a reliable and proven target man, to both lead the line and provide Maresca with a prolific new option up top. This has apparently prompted co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley to cast their eyes on two big-name targets late in the window, with both Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen on their radar.

The Telegraph are among many outlets to report that Chelsea have made a late inquiry for Toney, as a deal for Osimhen hangs in the balance and could go either way.

Toney has been subject to late interest from the Saudi Pro League, but Chelsea can offer the England international Premier League football, which may well be tempting for him despite the riches available abroad.

Chelsea have been in talks over a deal for Osimhen since late July, but the Nigerian's transfer would be an expensive and complicated one financially. While Boehly and co weigh up their best options up front, there is also the matter of Raheem Sterling and his future.

Chelsea open talks to sign Jadon Sancho in Raheem Sterling swap deal

Sterling has been deemed surplus-to-requirements by Maresca, and Man United have been named as a very credible potential new home for the 29-year-old.

This has allegedly opened up the possibility of Chelsea making a surprise late swoop for United outcast Jadon Sancho, and it is something they're very much considering.

According to The Daily Mail, and other outlets this week, Chelsea are in talks with Man United over a swap deal involving Sancho and Sterling. The £250,000-per-week winger may also prefer to join them over Serie A giants Juventus, who have also registered a last-gasp interest in the 24-year-old's services.

This interesting new development indicates that Maresca could add blockbuster new names to his ranks both in the striker position and out wide, with there proving to never be a dull day at Stamford Bridge.
