Norwich, Bournemouth… The Fantasy Football gems you should be considering

Although it’s a common-held view that the gap between the Premier League and the Championship has grown into a vast chasm, for every QPR there has been a Crystal Palace, and the likes of Stoke City and Swansea City have cemented themselves at accepted elite sides over the course of the past five to ten years.

2014/15 saw both the aforementioned Super Hoops and Burnley make an immediate return to the second tier – and had it not been for a miraculous late run, Leicester City would have joined them, too – but that should not serve as a source of great negativity for the current crop gearing up for life in the big time.

Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich enter the ‘big time’ with varying levels of reputation, with the Cherries set for their bow, the Canaries back in at the first time of asking and the Hornets sat somewhere in-between.

Although fans of the threesome will be preoccupied with thoughts of whether or not their teams can actually cut it in the money-spinning world of the ‘Prem’, the rest of us are looking over for a few Fantasy Football bargains.

Promoted sides offer risk/reward opportunities, with low valuations in place due to the players’, often, lack of top tier experience and the prospect of relegation battles, but every now and then a real diamond in the rough can be found – Charlie Austin last season for example.

With the most expensive of the ‘newbies’ coming in at £6m (Matt Ritchie and Steven Berghuis), there is value in the market, but it’s not wise to fill your side with bargain basement names, as, chances are, very few will yield the return you’ll be needing to battle in individual leagues, the cup and, if you’re really lucky, the overall rankings.

Bournemouth

Promoted as champions, the Dorset side are likely to be the first port of call for eager managers. Even though it’s the Cherries’ maiden voyage into the Premier League, their attractive brand of football in the Championship last term has boosted expectations, with the example of Swansea back in 2011/12 proof that a change in playing style isn’t always needed.

Matt Ricthie is certainly the poster boy for Eddie Howe’s side, and his 15 goals and 17 assists from a wide midfield role last term bodes well. Although the quality of opposition will be sterner, the Scotland international looked a Premier League player stuck in the Championship last term, and the runs of Callum Wilson ahead will allow for slick counter attacks.

At £5.5m, the aforementioned forward offers a budget option for one of a front three. Twenty goals last term is encouraging to say the least, and he looks nailed-on to be Howe’s main striker with additions up front having been minimal on the South Coast so far this summer.

In defence, full-backs Simon Francis and Tyrone Mings come in at £4.5m apiece, and are set to be used In an attacking manner. Francis notched six assists last term under Howe, and Mings, brought in from Ipswich for a club record fee, appears to have the physicality to do the same job on the left flank.

Hidden gems:

Simon Francis – £4.5m

Tommy Elphick – £4.5m

Watford

While things have stayed settled at Bournemouth and Norwich, Watford are now on their fifth manager in 12 months. Quique Sanchez Flores arrives with a wealth of experience in the Spanish game – and a brief spell in the Middle East – but the difference in style associated with the Premier League is a hurdle, and with new signings to bed in it’s hard to predict what will happen at Vicarage Road.

Troy Deeney is the obvious standout name, with the striker a potential bargain at £5.5m. 21 goals – the joint second highest tally in the Championship last term – make the 27-year-old the most dangerous striker stepping up, and penalty-kick duties provide another possible points outlet.

Heurelho Gomes impressed in goal, too, but his previous time in the top tier was littered with errors, while Gabriele Angella is always a threat from set-pieces – although additions at the back may disrupt things. Steven Berghuis on the wing has the potential to be a worth, albeit relatively costly, buy at £6m. His 11 goals in Eredivisie last term make him an intriguing option.

Hidden gems:

Heurelho Gomes – £4.5m

Juan Manuel Jurado – £5.5m

Norwich

With only three permanent additions, and Andre Wisdom on loan from Liverpool, Norwich have been the least active of the promoted sides this summer, and look instead likely to rely on the tactical tinkering of manager Alex Neil – who was a revelation following his January move to Carrow Road – and largely the same squad relegated in 2013/14.

Unusually for a promoted side the goalkeeper looks to be a wise addition. John Ruddy is a full England international and comes in at a modest £4.5m – not a bad fee considering he’ll play week in, week out and the Canaries conceded only 48 goals last term (bettered only by Middlesbrough).

Bradley Johnson’s 15 goals from midfield mean he could be a good ‘fifth’ man at £5.5m, although Nathan Redmond, at the same price, offers more attacking intent on the wing and topped the team’s assist charts with 13 last season.

Cameron Jerome up front could be a gamble, with his 20 goals – 2.6-shots-per-goal – a solid return, but his previous woes in the Premier League brings about the feeling that the second tier is his level – albeit at 28 he’s now in his peak and possesses experience.

Hidden gems:

Martin Olsson – £4.5m

Jonny Howson – £5.0m

Southampton receive advice on how to spend Van Dijk cash

Southampton were at the centre of a huge transfer saga in the summer, and it involved Virgil van Dijk.

The defender made it clear that he wanted to move on to pastures new, but his club stood firm and rejected his transfer request.

Liverpool publicly withdrew their interest in the Dutchman, but it appears that the Reds never really went away.

Seven days ago, the Merseyside outfit announced that a deal had been struck to sign Van Dijk on January 1.

The 26-year-old has now finalised his switch to Anfield, and widespread reports, including one from The Guardian, have claimed that Southampton pocketed £75m.

The coastal club have sold a handful of players, including Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren, to Liverpool in the past.

This latest sum of money should be spent wisely by manager Mauricio Pellegrino, according to the club’s former star Matt Le Tissier.

The 49-year-old believes that a striker should be bought due to the misfiring of Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini.

Le Tissier told Sky Sports:

“Well Southampton clearly need a centre-forward and I would say we probably need one or two players for that spot in behind the striker to inject some creativity.

“I think the money from selling Virgil van Dijk will be invested in the attack because we’ve got Wesley Hoedt, who was brought in knowing Van Dijk was going, and then Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida are also options at centre-back. The fans will certainly appreciate a couple of decent forwards coming in to make them more creative and positive.”

In Focus: Southampton set to block Bertrand exit now but he will go in the summer

According to reports in the printed version of The Sun on January 5 (page 57), £60m-rated Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand wants to leave the club during the January transfer window, but the club have told him that he is staying.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun says that the England international was hoping to quit the south coast outfit this month in order to join a team that is capable of winning trophies, having been frustrated that Saints have dropped down the Premier League table after four successive top-eight finishes.

The Sun says that his desire to leave Southampton has alerted runaway leaders Manchester City, although he is rated at £60m by the club after they sold Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool for £75m at the start of the month.

How has Bertrand done this season?

The 28-year-old full-back failed to recapture the form he has shown in previous years at the start of the campaign, but he improved towards the tail end of last year with two assists in the 4-1 win against Everton, and a man of the match performance in the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

The Three Lions man hasn’t been as influential going forward as he has been in the past though, which would suggest that he is perhaps thinking about moving on – especially after seeing teammate van Dijk go.

Will he leave during this window?

If Southampton really do want £60m for him then it seems unlikely, with even Man City unlikely to pay that amount for him.

Despite the fact that his contract isn’t due to run out until 2021, it is still a huge fee for a full-back that is two years older than van Dijk and unless the south coast outfit lower their demands, he will almost certainly be staying until the summer when he is likely to be sold.

Three reasons Newcastle must consider shock move to sign Manolo Gabbiadini

According to Italian media outlet Gianluca Di Marzio on Monday, out of favour Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini, who is rated at €15m (£13.3m) according to Transfermarkt, is a target for Serie A side Bologna before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.

The Italian outfit could be on the verge of losing star attacker Simone Verdi to Napoli, and they want to bring Gabbiadini in to replace him if the 25-year-old does end up leaving.

The Saints man made such a positive start to life at St Mary’s after joining them from Napoli a year ago, but he has struggled for goals and to get into the team this season despite the south coast outfit’s struggles – they currently lie just one place and one point above the Premier League relegation zone – and he may want to leave to play more regularly.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United’s situation worsened on Wednesday when it was revealed that owner Mike Ashley had pulled out of talks to sell the club to PCP Partners, which has left a bit of a cloud over Rafa Benitez’s transfer dealings this month – the Spaniard had initially said last month he wanted all business done by January 20.

The Magpies certainly need reinforcements to boost their own survival bid and bringing Gabbiadini to St James’ Park could prove to be a shrewd move.

Here are three reasons Newcastle must consider a shock deal to sign the Italy international…

They need a striker

With Joselu, Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring just eight Premier League goals between them in 23 top flight games – and with the team netting just 21 times in total it is clear to see where their problems lie.

Benitez won’t want a lack of goals to be their downfall in the second-half of the campaign as they look to avoid an instant return to the Championship, and bringing a new striker to the club may well be one of his priorities in the remainder of January – especially if Gayle or Mitrovic leave.

Goals

While Gabbiadini has struggled for goals so far this season – he has netted three times in 20 Premier League appearances for Southampton – he has hardly been helped by a lack of support and service from the players behind him.

Saints haven’t played to the Italy international’s strengths as they did when he first arrived in the Premier League this time last year, when he scored six goals in his first four outings for the south coast outfit – including a brace in the EFL Cup final defeat against Manchester United.

The 26-year-old has shown that he can find the net if he has the right players around him and is confident, and those goals could be crucial to helping keep Newcastle in the top flight if they bring him to St James’ Park.

Point to prove

Even though Southampton have been struggling to find the net, Gabbiadini has only started one of their last 12 Premier League fixtures and he will certainly have a point to prove to the south coast outfit if he does end up departing this month.

The 26-year-old will also look to ensure that he finds some form in order to keep his place in the Italy squad despite the fact that they won’t be competing at the 2018 World Cup, and to do that he needs regular minutes on the pitch and to be finding the net consistently – with Newcastle likely to be willing to give him that opportunity.

In Focus: Pastore turns down Liverpool move

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Paris Saint-Germain attacker Javier Pastore has turned down the chance to join Liverpool.

What’s the story?

Pastore, who is valued at £16.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, is widely expected to leave PSG this month after seven years with the French outfit.

The Argentine has scored five times in 19 appearances in all competitions during the 2017-18 campaign, but his time in Paris looks to be coming to an end.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Liverpool made an offer of between £22m and £35m for the 28-year-old.

Pastore, however, was not said to be interested in the move as he wants to return to Serie A.

Inter Milan are believed to be the favourites for Pastore, and the Italian side could step up their interest after allowing Portugal international Joao Mario to join West Ham United.

Do Liverpool need another attacker?

Having sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona earlier this month, it is not a surprise that Liverpool are being linked with a move for a number of attackers.

Leicester City’s Riyad Marrez was believed to be on the club’s radar, but talk of a deal for the Algerian international has gone cold over the last week or so.

Pastore would have been perfect, with the Argentine a classy performer who is capable of operating in a number of positions in the final third of the field.

Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat at Swansea City on Monday night showed that Jurgen Klopp’s side are still far from the full package, and fresh blood is needed in order to challenge for titles.

Monaco’s Thomas Lemar, meanwhile, now looks set to stay at the Ligue 1 champions until at least the end of the season in what is another blow to Liverpool.

The January transfer window closes next week, and Liverpool fans will be hoping that their club has something up its sleeve.

HYS: Manchester United fans, are you happy with your club’s January transfer window?

Manchester United will feel they conducted the smartest business of any Premier League side during the January transfer window, improving the quality of Jose Mourinho’s starting XI through a swoop for Arsenal attacker Alexis Sanchez without spending a penny.

Indeed, the Red Devils swapped the Chile international for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who never convinced after arriving from Borussia Dortmund and was always a rather marginal figure in Mourinho’s first-team plans.

In United’s other two pieces of business last month, youngsters Axel Tuanzebe and James Wilson were allowed to leave on loan for Aston Villa and Sheffield United respectively.

But could United have done more last month? They’ve certainly got the capacity to spend and they’re certainly a long way off Manchester City right now, so a few more mid-season additions to the first-team squad wouldn’t have gone amiss.

It’s all a matter of perspective though, so we have a simple question for United supporters – are you happy with your club’s efforts during the January transfer window? Let us know by voting below…

In Focus: Sandro Ramirez could have been a big hit at Everton

As reported by The Sun, Everton forward Sandro Ramirez has ruled out a return to Goodison Park next season, believing loan club Sevilla is exactly where he wants to be.

What’s the story?

Ramirez was a much-hyped arrival from Malaga last summer after an impressive 2016/17 season in La Liga, but failed to settle at Goodison Park before moving to Sevilla on loan in the January transfer window.

Now it seems he’ll be looking to stay there, despite only being at the club for two weeks.

As quoted by The Sun, the 22-year-old said: “I’ve been here two weeks and I want to continue next season at Sevilla. I’m really where I want to be.”

Of course, it won’t be completely up to the player where he ends up, but it certainly appears that forward does not want to make the move back to Merseyside come the end of the season.

Rated at £9m by Transfermarkt, the Toffees may at least make a profit on his spell at the club, having reportedly bought him for a budget £5.2m.

What could have been?

With a football education at Barcelona and a decent scoring pedigree in Spain, the failure of Sandro Ramirez to make an impact at Everton will be seen as a disappointment to supporters.

Last season he scored 16 goals and provided 5 assists in all competitions for Malaga, the kind of attacking contribution that should have made him a hit at Goodison Park.

The player never really got the opportunity to player regularly, starting two matches in a row just once during his spell at the Toffees.

Was that a failure of the player or of the management?

We may never know, but a player who could have been a success at the club appears to have slipped through their fingers.

Everton fans want Funes Mori to start

Everton fans have been feeling less than enthused with the team’s recent performances, and manager Sam Allardyce has taken the brunt of the criticism.

Following last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor, the Merseyside outfit dropped to 11th in the Premier League table.

One area of the pitch that has sparked discussion among fans has been in defence, with individual players failing to put in consistently strong performances.

Michael Keane was recruited from the Clarets last summer in the hope of strengthening the back line, and while he has put in strong displays, the showings have not always been on a regular basis.

Ashley Williams has also faced criticism from the supporters, which has sparked some members of the fanbase to call upon Ramiro Funes Mori.

The Argentine has not played competitively for the Toffees for almost a year due to a serious knee injury, but he has been building up fitness by playing two games for the Under-23s.

Today, the defender is celebrating his 27th birthday, and fans have reacted to the club’s well-wishes by calling on Funes Mori to be brought back into the team.

Frank Lampard says Arsenal are at ‘tipping point’

Chelsea and Arsenal both suffered one-goal away defeats on Sunday afternoon, which means that the gap between them in the Premier League table remains at eight points.

Both sides are enduring a poor spell which has seen their respective managers come under pressure but it is only the Blues who are within touching distance of the top four.

The current plight of the two sides is a far cry from the battles Chelsea legend Frank Lampard used to have with the Gunners.

Both sides were competing for the title throughout the 2000s, before the Blues’ superior physicality and ruthlessness saw them race away from the Gunners in terms of being in contention for the top prizes.

[ad_pod ]

That malaise at the Emirates has lingered, even since Lampard’s retirement and following a run of four straight defeats, the rumblings have never been louder in opposition of Wenger.

The former Chelsea and West Ham man has used his Evening Standard column to give his view on where Arsenal are at and how they can proceed. Lampard wrote:

“When things go toxic like it is among the fans now, it is a massive distraction for the players. I have always advocated that players should be able to play regardless, but when it becomes so toxic, then it is a problem.

“It’s gone beyond the norm now at Arsenal. It has been on a knife-edge for the last few seasons, where it took two or three bad results and the fans were willing to turn.

“But now we have got to the tipping point — and that makes for a difficult environment for the team to play in.

“There will be lads in there struggling for confidence and when you’re playing in a negative atmosphere created by your own fans, it makes it twice as hard.

“The only thing they can do is show character and try to dig themselves out of this hole.”

Arsenal’s players have to take responsibility as it is hard to shake the feeling that a lot of their players are happy to plod along, making the same mistakes because they know it is their manager who will get the bulk of the criticism.

In the short term, Thursday’s match against Milan is massive because their only remaining plausible route into next season’s Champions League is by winning the Europa League.

However, even a good performance in the San Siro would only be a short-term sticking plaster over a deep, deep issue that will only really move towards its resolution when Wenger is sacked or leaves the club.

Man United fans demand Jose Mourinho drops Alexis Sanchez against Brighton

Manchester United will look to retain their only chance of winning a trophy this season when they host Brighton and Hove Albion in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Saturday, and Red Devils fans have demanded manager Jose Mourinho makes a controversial change by dropping Alexis Sanchez from the starting line-up.

United were knocked out of the Champions League by Sevilla on Tuesday night, and with their opportunity of winning that gone and with arch-rivals Manchester City all but certain to lift the Premier League trophy, this is their final opportunity of silverware.

Sanchez has started all 10 of the Red Devils’ fixtures since he joined them from Arsenal during the January transfer window, but he has put in a number of below-par displays scoring just one goal and providing a further two assists, and he was slammed by the Old Trafford faithful for his performance against Sevilla.

Man United supporters have been quick to have their say on the 29-year-old ahead of the visit from the Seagulls on Saturday, and while one said “drop Sanchez, bring in Martial”, another said “hope we drop Pogba and Sanchez on Saturday”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
