England battle but Warner, Smith put Australia in charge

David Warner survived being caught off no-ball on 99 before Steven Smith cemented Australia’s position in the evening session

The Report by Brydon Coverdale25-Dec-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThere was a distinct hint of Christmas about Australia’s batting on the first day at the MCG this year: one large gift, a hectic morning, a post-lunch doze, and a second wind as the evening approached. On a day when David Warner scored his second consecutive century in Melbourne Tests, Australia went to stumps in a satisfactory position at 3 for 244, with Steven Smith on 65 and Shaun Marsh on 31. And yet, despite the scoreline, it was a day on which England’s toil deserved respect.Whatever presents Smith opened on Christmas Day were nothing compared to the gift of winning the toss – something he had not done in a Test since March – on a hot day at the MCG, where the pitch was so flat it looked like one curated for the BBL, not the Ashes. And during the first session, there was nothing in the pitch for England’s bowlers but despair as Warner raced towards 83 at lunch, with Australia at 0 for 102.But, as if made drowsy by tryptophan, the Australians slowed dramatically after the break. Only 43 runs were added between lunch and tea for the losses of Warner and Cameron Bancroft. If this pitch was a road, England’s bowlers had suddenly turned into sleeping policemen. And yet England still faced the challenge of dismissing Smith, which nobody has done in a Boxing Day Test since Umesh Yadav in 2014, and thus Australia accumulated a further 99 in the final session. From ecstasy to agony: Tom Curran’s first Test wicket will have to wait a while longer•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The most memorable moment of the day for the 88,000 spectators came when Warner was on 99 and tried his risky short-arm pull against the debutant seamer Tom Curran. As the ball ballooned off the top edge and straight to Stuart Broad at mid-on, Warner’s expression was one of disbelief at throwing away his 21st Test century. The disbelief quickly spread throughout the stadium as replays showed Curran had overstepped, and Warner was reprieved by a retrospective no-ball call.Curran was denied his maiden Test wicket – and by stumps still had not claimed it – and next ball Warner brought up his century from his 130th delivery with a single clipped off his hips. Curran joined Ben Stokes and Mark Wood as England players in recent years to have missed out on their first Test wicket due to a no-ball, but he bowled well throughout the day in unhelpful conditions. So, for the most part, did all of England’s bowlers, with the exception of Moeen Ali, who leaked nearly a run a ball from his six overs. That Joe Root used the part-time legspin of Dawid Malan more on the opening day of this Test than he did Moeen’s offbreaks was revealing, and not encouraging for Moeen’s hopes of retaining his place in the side.James Anderson took his 519th Test wicket, drawing level with Courtney Walsh, when Warner edged behind for 103 to a delivery that moved away just enough, and Stuart Broad ended a 69-over wicketless streak when he lured Usman Khawaja into an edge behind on 17 from 65 balls. Chris Woakes had struck the first blow when he trapped Bancroft lbw on 26, ending a difficult stay for the opener. The opening partnership was worth 122 but Warner accounted for nearly 100 of this himself, and Bancroft never really looked comfortable. In the opening session, he was often seen fending short deliveries awkwardly, as if having trouble picking up the length or pace. It was a stark contrast to the free scoring from Warner, who struck 13 fours and one six – lofted over long-on off Moeen.Likewise, Khawaja had difficulty in getting going, but by stumps the Australians had a strong 84-run partnership from Smith and Marsh that looked like setting up a good total. Along the way, Smith moved past Cheteshwar Pujara to become the leading run scorer in Test cricket in 2017, although South Africa’s Dean Elgar has a Test in hand against Zimbabwe in which he could yet make a push for the top of the table.Of course, England would also have to find a way to get Smith out, and there was no evidence that in that regard Melbourne would be any different from Brisbane or Perth. If winning the toss on this pitch was the perfect post-Christmas present for Australia’s captain, another hundred would be even better.

Spurs: Bid submitted on deadline day for £40m Sarr partner

Tottenham Hotspur's Deadline Day has already been hectic enough, but there could still be more to come as Ange Postecoglou scrambles to finalise his squad…

Who could Tottenham Hotspur sign on Deadline Day?

The Australian has brought newfound hope to their corner of north London, and with a deal for Brennan Johnson seeing them unload another big fee, many fans would assume that this would mark their business concluded.

However, The Daily Mail clearly think otherwise, as they offer an update on the Lilywhites' pursuit of longstanding target Conor Gallagher.

They suggest that a verbal bid of around £40m has been sent to Chelsea in an effort to pry the England international from Stamford Bridge, although that is £5m shy of their valuation.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Whilst the 23-year-old would likely be keen to stay should he be assured opportunities, with the continued spending of the Blues, perhaps opting to join a team in transition could mark a smarter option for the benefit of his budding career.

How good is Conor Gallagher?

By bringing in Gallagher many would wonder where he would even fit in Postecoglou's side.

After all, their start to the season has been impressive, with Yves Bissouma, James Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr forming a solid engine room trio that has driven them to an unbeaten Premier League start.

However, with a few key tweaks, the system could be altered to get the best out of all three of these stars, whilst also including the Cobham graduate.

It is expected that, of all mentioned, it is the 20-year-old who would likely strike up the finest partnership with Gallagher given their shared youthful energy that could prove infectious on the rest of the side.

conor-gallagher

The Senegalese star has been lauded for these traits by his 58-year-old boss: "He's got a great energy about him, but he's got quality there too.

"He's one of those midfielders who causes the opposition real problems because whether it's him running with the ball or without the ball, he runs forward, he runs aggressively and he disrupts the opposition. He's just got a great temperament for a young guy."

This would blend well with their potential new signing, who was praised similarly by journalist The Athletic's Mike Stavrou: "Conor Gallagher was absolutely relentless with his pressing and energy tonight. Some player Chelsea have got."

Such work rate is crucially blended with a wealth of attacking talent, best showcased during his loan spell at Crystal Palace. There he scored eight and assisted three in the league alone, having struggled since returning to his boyhood club.

Despite that, when compared to other midfielders across Europe he still ranks in the top 14% for total shots per 90, the top 5% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 and the top 7% for blocks per 90, via FBref.

To place such all-around excellence beside Sarr, who has enjoyed a fine start to the season already, it becomes clear that they could allow the other to push forward whilst the other drops deep, both boasting the quality to thrive in these roles.

After all, his 7.67 average rating in the league is buoyed by one goal, one assist and a 90% pass accuracy, alongside one key pass and four ball recoveries per game, via Sofascore.

With Sarr finally showing the promise that his initial £14.6m move suggested he had, he and Gallagher could prove to be one of the division's finest midfield pairings in no time at all, set to dominate for the next decade.

Roy Keane: Age, wife, family, net worth, salary, Haaland & more

Roy Keane is widely considered as one of the best Premier League players of all time. The 67-cap Republic of Ireland international won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and one Champions League with Manchester United.

His stern, no-nonsense attitude is often trivialised within the media nowadays, as he commonly works as a pundit for Sky Sports and ITV, but back in his playing career, it brought him a lot of controversial moments, including a high-profile bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Notwithstanding that, there is also little doubt it contributed to many of his achievements and successes.

Today at Football FanCast we delve into Roy Keane’s career and most talked-about moments.

How old is Roy Keane?

Roy Keane was born on the 10th of August 1971, in Cork, Ireland.

He is 52-years-old.

Who is Roy Keane's wife?

Roy met Theresa Doyle in 1992, when the midfielder was playing for Nottingham Forest.

Keane’s family consists of five children, Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna. Roy also has two grandkids, a granddaughter and a grandson, which he revealed during his experiment on Instagram.

What is Roy Keane's height?

Roy Keane stands at a whopping 5ft 10 (177.8cm).

How much did Man Utd pay for Roy Keane?

Manchester United paid Nottingham Forest a British transfer record fee of £3.75m to sign 21-year-old midfielder Roy Keane in the summer of 1993.

Remarkably, Keane had agreed a deal with Blackburn Rovers prior to the switch but Sir Alex Ferguson’s 11th-hour attempt to hijack the move was successful, to the anger of Rovers boss Kenny Daglish.

Keane later recalled how the transfer saga unfolded: “I agreed a deal and shook hands with him. I went back to Cork and, on the Sunday morning, woke up and I got a phone-call from Sir Alex to my house back in Cork and he said will you come and meet with me for talks tomorrow. I said look, I shook hands with Blackburn and he said don’t worry about that! Kenny was fuming!”

“We had to sign Roy Keane,” said Sir Alex.“It was absolutely vital for the club’s future.”

And, as they say, the rest is history…

Why did Roy Keane leave Man Utd?

Roy Keane left Manchester United in November 2005, ending a 12-and-a-half-year spell, to the shock of football fans across the globe. A bust-up with Sir Alex three weeks prior was the catalyst for his departure.

Keane angered the United boss when he launched an attack on his teammates following a 4-1 defeat to Middlesborough at the Riverside Stadium.

MUTV interviewed the injured midfielder to get his thoughts on the game but he certainly didn’t hold back. In fact, the footage wasn’t allowed to be aired and the club attempted to delete the tape, as reported by The Mirror.

Sir Alex, whilst not naming Keane, appeared to provide his thoughts on his captain’s rant after United’s victory over Chelsea on November 6, 2005.

“You don’t criticise any Manchester United player outside the doors. I have never done and I won’t. I am unremitting in that respect. Totally unequivocal. My stance is there and it doesn’t change,” said Ferguson.

After a rocky few months thereafter, Keane left by mutual consent following a live MUTV phone-in, in which the Irishman announced it’d be his last season at the club.

And that was the final straw for Sir Alex and the hierarchy.

Was Roy Keane an aggressive player?

Roy Keane has certainly had his fair share of heated moments on the pitch, but perhaps ‘no-nonsense’ would be a better term to use.

The classic encounter between Keane and Patrick Vieira in the Highbury tunnel is an iconic moment that demonstrates his passion for defending teammates (maybe not in an MUTV interview).

The video below shows the midfielder confronting Vieira for ‘picking’ on his teammate Gary Neville prior to a fixture between Manchester United and Arsenal on February 1st, 2005.

In an interview after the match, the Red Devils skipper said: “I don’t want to go into too much detail but Patrick is six-foot-four… he says something about Gary Neville. I said ‘come and have a go at me’ – simple as that.

“If players want to intimidate some of my teammates, then let’s have a go at some of the other players. They think Gary Neville’s an easy target. I weren’t having it.”

Keane had the last laugh, though, as his side defeated the Gunners 4-2 on away soil.

How many red cards did Roy Keane get?

Roy Keane received seven red cards throughout his career but his dismissal for a challenge on Manchester City’s Alfie Haaland was by far the worst.

Hampshire set for coveted Ashes Test

The ECB are shortly due to confirm the major match allocations for 2020-2024 which will also include the host venues for the new T20 tournament

Hampshire look set to be one of the main beneficiaries when the ECB announce their major match allocation next week. They are expected to be awarded one of the most coveted games in the schedule – an Ashes Test in 2023. While the club hosted their first Test against Sri Lanka in 2011 and a second against India in 2014, the opportunity to host a Test against Australia would represent the culmination of many years’ work – and many millions of pounds of investment – for the club’s benefactor, Rod Bransgrove. While it is not anticipated that Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl ground will host any other Tests during the period, it is likely it will be given a couple of international T20 fixtures each year and confirmed as the base for one of the teams in the new T20 competition scheduled to start in 2020.The allocation – which will account for major matches staged in England and Wales from 2020 to 2024 – was originally scheduled to be announced on February 14, though it is possible that deadline could slide if the ECB board demand more explanation before ratification.England fielding coach

The ECB is understood to have offered the job of fielding coach to the former Sussex batsman Carl Hopkinson. He is currently Sussex Academy coach.

There could also be good news for Lord’s in the allocation. While the reduction in England’s Test programme (they will play six Tests per summer from 2020 rather than seven as is the case at present) looked likely to harm them, confidence within the MCC remains high that they will continue to host two Tests a year. In summers where a team plays five Tests against England – a scenario that is currently only relevant to India and Australia – Lord’s would host one match in that series and a further Test against a side outside the ICC’s Test Championship. Lord’s is also likely to be confirmed as a host for a new team in the T20 competition. The other likely host venues for the new T20 competition are The Oval, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge, Cardiff, Manchester and Headingley though it is possible a few games will be played at other venues including Bristol and Durham. The remainder of the Tests will be split between England’s traditional Test grounds. With Durham no longer eligible to host Test cricket as part of a raft of penalties imposed on the club following their financial problems and Cardiff understood not to have applied to host any Test cricket during the period, the competition for the remaining three Ashes games will be limited to Edgbaston, Trent Bridge, The Oval, Old Trafford and Headingley. But with the ECB having altered the process by which games are allocated, it is the grounds with the largest capacity – The Oval, Old Trafford and Edgbaston – which are best placed to win the fight to host those Ashes Tests in 2023.Whereas clubs used to bid against one another – sometimes being seduced into over-spending in their desperation to host games – they now apply for packages of matches on the understanding that ticket sales (but not catering or hospitality revenues) will be shared with the ECB. For the most popular games, such as Ashes series, that revenue share is understood to be 50% of ticket sales.

De Kock loses hearing against ICC sanction

Quinton de Kock was found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct in relation to bringing the game into disrepute

Quinton de Kock was found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct in relation to bringing the game into disrepute. The South African wicketkeeper did not contest the charge but did try to the reduce the sanction against him. He was unsuccessful. At a hearing on Wednesday evening, match referee Jeff Crowe ruled that De Kock would lose 25% of his match fee and have one demerit point against his name. The incident over which de Kock was charged took place on the fourth day of the Durban Test, when the players left the field for tea. Broadcast footage, which was made public on Wednesday, showed David Warner allegedly swearing at de Kock and CCTV footage of the passageway leading to the dressing rooms, published on Monday, had Warner being physically restrained by team-mates while shouting at de Kock, who did not respond.Warner was charged with a Level 2 offence on Tuesday evening, and fined 75% of his match fee. Though he has accepted these sanctions, Australia claim Warner was responding to a jibe from de Kock, and they say it was “personal”.Meanwhile, Crowe has convened a meeting of the captains and managers of both sides at St George’s Park to outline his expectations relating to player behaviour during the second Test in Port Elizabeth starting on Friday. On Wednesday morning, South Africa revealed that they would contest de Kock’s charge and at a press conference in the afternoon coach Ottis Gibson said South Africa believed “Quinny didn’t do anything”.However, at the hearing, de Kock did not dispute the charge levelled against him but argued against the severity of the sanction. He was accompanied by captain Faf du Plessis, coach Ottis Gibson and team manager Mohammed Moosajee and in a 45-minute session admitted to saying “something,” to Warner, but only after being provoked. South Africa presented two independent witnesses who confirmed de Kock’s assertion that he was responding to Warner. The verdict was delivered around 20 minutes after the hearing concluded. For South Africa, the guilty verdict is still a victory of sorts because they wanted to make the point that de Kock was not the instigator. On several occasions, South Africa referred to their batsmen being badgered and all but accused the umpires of not stepping in to curb the matter on-field. Both du Plessis and Gibson have called on the match officials to do better, even though umpires claimed they had not heard anything untoward. It has not been established whether what was said involved the family members of either player, as had been previously claimed.
