Liverpool are still smarting from what happened away to Tottenham over the weekend, and a fresh injury blow has sent the Reds' weekend from bad to worse.
What happened to Liverpool with VAR?
The Reds suffered one of the cruelest defeats in Premier League history on Saturday evening, in what was a crunch clash with a similarly in-form Spurs side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Liverpool ended up playing with nine men for a chunk of proceedings, following a somewhat harsh red card for Curtis Jones and a soft sending-off for Diogo Jota, and it was Joel Matip's last-gasp own goal that consigned his side to a 2-1 defeat in north London.
The worst part of the entire match was Luis Diaz's disallowed goal during the first half, however, with the Colombian finding the net but being adjudged to have been in an offside position. It turns out that he was in fact onside, but those in charge of VAR inexplicably failed to tell referee Simon Hooper that that was the case.
It was an incident that has left anyone of a Liverpool persuasion fuming, and on Sunday night, the club released an official statement, saying: "That such failings have already been categorised as 'significant human error' is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency."
Away from the VAR farce, the Reds have now also been handed an injury blow, following a new update that has emerged.

Which Liverpool player is now injured?
Taking to X, Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink claimed that Cody Gakpo could now be missing for Liverpool for "several weeks", having limped off after scoring the equaliser against Spurs:
"Cody Gakpo is expected to be out for several weeks at Liverpool. If all goes well, a few weeks. The Dutch matches in October do not seem feasible for the former PSV player at the moment."
Gakpo took his goal at Spurs brilliantly on Saturday, but as soon as he looked in pain after finding the net, it was clear that he was in serious discomfort, having been down injured shortly before scoring as well.
In truth, the fact that the Dutchman was seen in a knee brace after the game means that several weeks on the sidelines could actually be deemed semi-good news for Jurgen Klopp, considering there is the risk that he could be out for months of action instead. However, there is no question that Gakpo will be a big miss, with his manager saying he is someone who "eats football", in terms of his dedication and intelligence as a player.
The 24-year-old has often been trusted as Liverpool's first-choice option down the middle of the attack, linking with others in Roberto Firmino-esque fashion, and that ability to knit things together will make him a big loss in the coming weeks, even though the likes of Darwin Nunez and Jota bring different attributes to the team.
Hopefully, Gakpo is only out of action until the October international break has finished later this month, but that could be wishful thinking, following this latest update on his fitness.
The former England batsman will be the first non-Indian to speak at the lecture, a decision that has caused a lot of disagreement within the BCCI administration

Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen is set to become the first non-Indian cricketer to deliver the BCCI’s annual MAK Pataudi lecture, a decision that has resulted in dissatisfaction among the board’s office bearers. The previous five speakers at the lecture have been former Indian cricketers: Sunil Gavaskar, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Farokh Engineer. The BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhury criticised Saba Karim, the BCCIs general manager of cricket operations, for the development.”This last email on the trail by GM (Cricket Operations) and expression of happiness on it had left me wondering whether the Memorial Lecture was indeed MAK Pataudi Memorial Lecture or Sir Len Hutton Lecture or for that matter Sir Frank Woolley lecture,” Choudhury wrote. The long discussions – which ESPNcricinfo has seen – between Karim, the BCCI office bearers and the Committee of Administrators, which was appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the functioning of the board, to choose the speaker had begun on May 10.Karim’s original shortlist of “former Test cricketers of stature who are currently involved as either commentators, coaches or administrators” had four names: Pietersen, Kumar Sangakkara, Sourav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain. The CoA had unanimously picked Sangakkara, but Choudhury expressed reservations over that choice. According to Choudhury, he and Karim had discussions in Bengaluru on the sidelines of the India selection meeting on May 8, when he had suggested the names of former India cricketers Nari Contractor, Chandu Borde, Erapalli Prasanna or Abbas Ali Baig to give the Pataudi lecture.”These cricketers have even the distinction of having played alongside Tiger Pataudi and if any of them agrees it could provide the much needed perspective on how cricket has evolved from those years of challenge,” Choudhury wrote. “As I understand Tiger Memorial Lecture is not an elocution contest and reasonable communication skills are all that we should look for. It is meant to bring to the fore the evolution of the game, what it meant to play for the country in the old days, the hardships of the time, challenges of the future, and the like. If that be the case, certainly once every few years an iconic cricketer of yore should find a place as the keynote speaker in the Memorial Lecture.”Vinod Rai, the chairman of the CoA, said Choudhury’s objection was a “non-issue” and instructed Karim to come back with other suggestions only if Sangakkara was unavailable. On May 14, Karim informed the others that Sangakkara was not available, and that Pietersen had agreed to deliver the lecture. The choice of Pietersen, and the lack of communication during the process, angered Choudhury, who then objected to the whole process: why the shortlist did not have his suggestions, why there was so much preference for non-Indians, why the speaker’s relevance to Pataudi was not explained, and why no authorisation was sought before speaking to Pietersen once Sangakkara was not available.A source in the BCCI, however, said the Pataudi lecture was never meant to be restricted to Indians. “Our endeavour was not to disregard or disrespect anybody but to raise the profile of the lecture,” the official said. “We wanted to get someone who is a global voice, who has a wider appeal, who is a friend of Indian cricket, who has experienced Indian cricket and can talk about it to the rest of the world.”The names given were in order of preference. We couldn’t go for Sourav because the last time his name came up there were objections that he was an administrator, and once Sangakkara was not available, the next logical choice was Pietersen. This is all a case of internal miscommunication, and not an attempt to exclude or disregard anybody.”

Tottenham Hotspur are a club boasting a rich history, although recently things have been far from easy.
Since their 2008 League Cup triumph, the Lilywhites have showcased a worrying adversity towards silverware, and despite reaching a few finals, have never really put in a consistent stint at the pinnacle of English football.
Winning a trophy is everything for Daniel Levy, as he outlined in the club's recent fan forum, but also he seems to have now realised that he cannot forego the journey it takes to reach that level. Having enjoyed years of success under Mauricio Pochettino, the subsequent appointments of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte showcased such a mindset, seeking to cut corners to return to the top.
With Ange Postecoglou now at the helm, it once again seems like the necessary systems are in place to cultivate long-term success in north London once again, with their desire to win cups bound to occur should they maintain their current trajectory.
What makes their blistering start to the new season even more impressive is the manner in which they have moved on from the sale of Harry Kane, which threatened to derail the former Celtic man's plans before they had even got underway.
How many goals did Harry Kane score for Spurs?
Having emerged through the academy, the rapid rate with which the English marksman began to grow was astounding, swiftly becoming a mainstay under the Argentine boss who prided himself on youth promotion.
A breakthrough year saw him score 21 league goals, and despite being branded as a one-season wonder, the 30-year-old would take little time to dispel such a suggestion.
In fact, the current England captain would go on to score 314 goals across a career that is almost guaranteed to reap some silverware at last with Bayern Munich, having become Spurs' all-time leading scorer as well as his country's.
A true legend of the English game, many pundits would rush to laud his contribution across his tenure in N17, with Jamie O'Hara even telling talkSPORT (23 March, 10.30pm) before the announcement of his £100m switch: "I’ll put it out there; I think he is the greatest striker English football has ever produced.
"He’ll get 70 goals for England. He will break the Premier League record. How can we have any negativity whatsoever towards a man who’s got everything? What he’s done lasts forever. He is immortal in the game of football. You are always going to remember Harry Kane for what he achieved for Tottenham, for England and in the Premier League."
He can do it all, with the creativity and intelligence to drop deep and forge chances for others, but the clinical cutting edge that has seen him grow into one of the Premier League's most consistent scorers for nearly a decade.
His departure always seemed inevitable, but that did little to ease the pain such a transfer commanded.
Although Postecoglou may have steered them through such a tough period, navigating the first few months without the 86-cap superstar, eventually they are bound to start feeling the effects that the absence of such a legendary figure will surely incur. Until then, they will seek to continue riding the wave that summer signing James Maddison is spearheading.
Whilst Kane will likely go down as one of their greatest-ever players, and rightly so, there was actually a moment in time well before his emergence when they could have signed an upgrade.
There are few strikers across history who can compete with the goalscoring figures posted by the Englishman, but in Samuel Eto'o, the Englishman would have had a true rival had they played at the same time. With more than comparable numbers when it came to finding the net, and a trophy cabinet that some of the greatest of all time would be proud of, this failed transfer marks one of the club's worst to date.
Did Spurs nearly sign Samuel Eto'o?
Reports have emerged noting the time when the Lilywhites once courted the Cameroonian finisher, with The Athletic seeking to detail the first. They would simply write: "Samuel Eto’o was another centre-forward linked at that time with Spurs and other English clubs, but none were willing to take a punt on the 21-year-old, who was then at Real Mallorca."

However, the manager at the time Glenn Hoddle would seek to go into greater detail, writing in his column for Bleacher Report: "Through my contacts in the game, I had lined up what I thought would be a pretty potent attacking force in Samuel Eto’o and Spanish international centre-forward Fernando Morientes, who had a formidable goalscoring record in his prime.

"I read recently in the Daily Mail that Tim Sherwood once scouted Luis Suarez for Harry Redknapp and came back with a report that put the club off buying him. I’ve no idea how accurate that report might be, but it made me think about the time I tried to sign Eto’o in his prime. I suffered a similar thing with Eto’o and Morienties. There were negative reports about both, and the deals that I had set up fell apart."
However, the 65-year-old former England boss would rush to defend his chairman over the saga: "Before anyone jumps to conclusions, this is not something to which I am pointing a finger at the chairman Daniel Levy. I had a very good relationship with Daniel back then and still do."
Barcelona were the eventual beneficiary of his services, joining for $29.41m (£24m) from RCD Mallorca in 2004.
How many trophies did Samuel Eto'o win?
To have to compare Eto'o with Kane is a true testament to just how impressive a career the latter has enjoyed, having seemingly emerged from nowhere.
However, when it comes to title-winning pedigree and the ability to pop up in key moments, it could be argued that the two could not be further apart.

After all, the 42-year-old would retire only four years ago, and boasted a trophy cabinet that most could only dream of. Across spells with Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and even Chelsea, the marksman would win four Champions League titles and the league in both Italy and Spain among numerous other domestic honours.
Not to mention that he achieved such a feat whilst also winning the African Footballer of the Year on four occasions, which should come as no surprise given he would finish with a fine tally of 364 goals and 118 assists throughout a sparkling career.
In fact, even Pep Guardiola would seek to laud him despite their feud, with the Spaniard noting: "Incredible player, outstanding striker, one of the best I met and have seen, personality, character, top scorer, more pressure, better performance. I had him for one season."
Kane will remain a legend at Spurs and of English football, but had they signed Eto'o under Hoddle, the landscape with which the Englishman emerged could have been so different. Had he grown up during an era where the north London outfit had even the slightest foundation for success, his presence could have made them the dominant force in England.

England are on the hunt for a whitewash, Australia are looking to save face after their record hammering at Trent Bridge

By The Numbers – England shatter ODI records
Big PictureThe perfect day and the worst day. Rarely have emotions been so polarised than with England and Australia at Trent Bridge. The teams have less than 48 hours to reset themselves before starting again at Chester-le-Street with two distinct aims: a push for a whitewash for England and a face-saving exercise for Australia. There was talk of a whitewash the last time these teams met, in Australia earlier this year, but England’s ambitions on that occasion we scuppered by one of their eye-watering collapses when they slumped to 8 for 5 in Adelaide. That, perhaps, remains Australia’s best chance of taking something this time – that England have a day when they nick a lot rather than middle shots into the stands – although the bowlers took such a hammering at Trent Bridge that it will be tough to recover. It is a mark of the expectations around this England team that holes were picked in the first two performances of this series and it is rare for Eoin Morgan to sound as satisfied with an outing as he did in Nottingham – although if he wasn’t happy then, he may never be. Still, the perfect day in a bilateral one-day series against a poor team is one thing. England will want to save a few for this time next year. After a perfect display, perhaps the one thing England would like is a few more wickets with the new ball. Mark Wood has taken two scalps in three matches with Australia, by and large, not having too many alarms against his new-ball spells only to repeatedly stumble when spin is introduced. That’s working fine for England now, but if they can make impact with the new ball – which highlights the significance of Chris Woakes’ absence – they become even more formidable. And there’s a daunting thought.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first) England WWWLW Australia LLLLWIn the spotlightJoe Root isn’t a slogger. He almost managed a wry smile when he walked out at No. 7 at Trent Bridge. It will have been one of the least-pressurised situations he will ever have batted – and he barely middled one shot. His fifty in the opening match, when England had lost three early wickets, showed how important his role in the side remains. He purred to a half-century at The Oval and eased into the 20s at Cardiff, but after the pyrotechnics in Nottingham he has had the quietest series of the top order.Tim Paine admitted he hadn’t had a worse day on the cricket field in his life than Trent Bridge. He’s a good man in a difficult position. His captaincy of the one-day team is even more of a sticking plaster than with the Test side, where he at least justifies his position. It’s hard to say the same in this side. You could even suggest he isn’t the best option in this squad: Alex Carey is a talented, dynamic keeper-batsman. If Australia are serious about reviving their one-day team, Paine does not look the answer. He may have just two more matches to make a case.Teams newsEngland have bolstered their pace attack by calling up Craig Overton and Sam Curran. Morgan hinted at the potential for changes due to the lengthy journey from Nottingham to Durham and the short turnaround between games. Tom Curran and Jake Ball were already part of the squad, so may get first dibs.England (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Alex Hales, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 David Willey, 9 Liam Plunkett/Jake Ball, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark Wood/Tom CurranWhat can Australia do? Shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic springs to mind. Justin Langer has suggested Nathan Lyon could get a call-up, although that may create issues with the tail. Andrew Tye may need to be benched after a tough couple of games. Aaron Finch’s move to No. 5 hasn’t worked, either.Australia (probable) 1 D’Arcy Short, 2 Travis Head, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Marcus Stoinis, 5 Aaron Finch, 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Tim Paine (capt & wk), 8 Ashton Agar, 9 Jhye Richardson, 10 Kane Richardson, 11 Billy Stanlake.Pitch and conditionsChester-le-Street can offer more help to the pacemen than some grounds around the country, although the Royal London Cup did feature scores over 300. The forecast is set fair for the day-night game and the match is a sellout, an important boost for a county that has had well-documented struggles of late.Stats and trivia This is the first ODI at Chester-le-Street since 2015 – when England beat New Zealand in the decider to take the series 3-2 Jonny Bairstow’s four centuries in 2018 already equals the most by an England batsman in a calendar year (David Gower in 1983) Andrew Tye’s series economy rate of 7.96 is the highest for an Australia bowler to have delivered at least 20 overs in a seriesQuotes”Their top three are brutal. The way they are playing is reminiscent of how we used to play in our day with Gilly, Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting at the top.” “We’ve always looked at series like this, and games with one day in between, as quite rigorous for the bowlers. Their risk of injury goes through the roof. So we’ll have to see how they pull up, and what they can do.”
The England captain was not overly concerned by the team’s latest collapse to India’s spin saying it was “a more useful experience than beating Australia”

Morgan relaxed over England’s spin struggles
Eoin Morgan admitted Kuldeep Yadav “exposes” a weakness in England’s game.Kuldeep, the left-arm wristspinner, claimed 6 for 25 as England were thrashed by eight wickets with 59 balls remaining at Trent Bridge. But despite the margin of defeat, Morgan played down the significance of the result. Suggesting that Kuldeep offers such unique challenges that it will rarely damage England, Morgan also reasoned that England would rather confront such challenges now, a year ahead of the World Cup, when they still have the opportunity to find solutions.”He is very good and there is no getting around that,” Morgan said. “He exposes an area of our game that we need to improve on and I think that is a good thing and a healthy thing.”Considering there is only one left-arm [wristspin] bowler in the world it is not a huge concern. You play against one team and he happens to be very good, he is not any old left-arm [wristspinner].”We have played great cricket for the last six months and not come up against anybody like this so it is a chance to improve on this area however long it might take between now and the World Cup.”You have to give credit where it is due, he did bowl well and we need to clarify our plans and commit to them and just be better.””This was definitely a more useful experience than beating Australia. Finding yourself coming up against something that is rare, it is like facing a right arm leg spinner who is very good, you don’t come against many of them but when you do you need to adapt and think on your feet, so it is always a good challenge.”Morgan also claimed that the surface at Trent Bridge provided some assistance to Kuldeep and suggested the pitch at Lord’s – where the second ODI is to be played on Saturday – will prove less helpful for him.”The two grounds we’ve played at have offered more turn than other grounds,” Morgan said, referring to Kuldeep’s five-wicket haul in the T20 match at Old Trafford. “I think Lord’s will be similar to Cardiff [where Kuldeep finished wicketless] in that regard so the shift will be important.”But that doesn’t paper over the fact that we need to get better at playing him.”England received a further blow with the news that a scan has shown that Alex Hales has a side strain sustained while batting in the nets the day ahead of the Trent Bridge ODI. He is expected to be out of action for three or four weeks and will not, therefore, feature for England in the rest of the series.Dawid Malan, who was called up as cover for Hales, will remain with the squad for the ODI at Lord’s on Saturday.Sam Curran, meanwhile, has been released by England to appear in Surrey’s T20 Blast match against Sussex on Friday. He will rejoin the squad ahead of Saturday’s ODI.
