Leeds: Farke must reignite move for 5 ft 7 whiz who’d thrive with Rutter

Leeds United have made a fine start to life back in the Championship this season as they have made themselves play-off contenders so far.

The Whites are currently sitting in fifth-place and have only lost two league matches in 11 outings under German head coach Daniel Farke, who was brought in to replace Sam Allardyce over the summer.

A number of players were snapped up in order to bolster the ex-Norwich City boss' squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, following their relegation from the Premier League.

Jaidon Anthony, Joel Piroe, Joe Rodon, Karl Darlow, Sam Byram, Djed Spence, Glen Kamara, Ilia Gruev, and Ethan Ampadu were all signed either on loan or on permanent deals.

Leeds forward Joel Piroe.

Despite the side's strong start to the season, the upcoming January transfer window will provide Farke with an opportunity to improve his team again.

One player whom he must look to reignite his interest in is Genk ace Joseph Paintsil, who would thrive alongside Georgino Rutter if the talented whiz can adapt to English football.

Were Leeds interested in Joseph Paintsil?

The Athletic reported that Leeds made an offer of €10m (£8.7m) to sign the Ghana international during the summer transfer window.

It was stated at the time that the player's preference was a move to Elland Road after a transfer to Championship rivals Southampton had fallen through, due to Paintsil and Paul Onuachu – who was set to go the other way – opting against the switch.

However, the Whites were unable to get a deal over the line for the exciting forward and it has since been revealed, by the player, that it was due to reasons out of their control.

Paintsil claimed that he was not interested in a move to Southampton or Leeds as his dream is to play in the Premier League, or in one of the other major European leagues.

Ghana international Joseph Paintsil.

The £8.7m-rated whiz added that it was not about Farke's side being a 'bad' team but he could not be convinced to make the drop down to the Championship at that moment in time.

However, the German head coach could make a more convincing case to persuade the Genk star to join the Yorkshire-based outfit in January if his team are well in the race for promotion to the top-flight.

The player has confirmed that his dream is to play at the top level in England and Leeds could offer him a good chance to join a side that could be promoted to that level if they are in the play-off, or automatic, mix by the time that January comes around.

Why were Leeds interested in Paintsil?

Farke and the club may have been interested in a deal to sign the Ghana international due to his phenomenal form for Genk throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

The 25-year-old winger showcased his ability to score and create goals at an impressive rate in the Belgian top-flight and his statistics suggest that he could have been a superb addition to Leeds' squad.

Paintsil was a regular for his side over the course of the campaign as he made 36 league appearances and started 36 times, with an average of 81 minutes per outing, as per Sofascore.

Ghana international Joseph Paintsil.

The right-footed whiz was lethal in front of goal and proved himself to be a reliable option to chip in with goals at the top end of the pitch from a wide position.

He ended the Pro League season with a stunning 17 goals from out wide, with only six 'big chances' missed in total. Meanwhile, no Leeds player managed more than 13 league goals last term and no Whites ace has scored more than 17 in a season since Chris Wood in the 2016/17 term.

Paintsil also caught the eye with his ability to carve open the opposition's defence to create opportunities for his teammates. Farke's target created 12 'big chances' and assisted 11 goals in total throughout those 36 outings.

Whereas, no Leeds player produced more than seven assists over the course of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign and no Whites star has hit double figures for assists since Pablo Hernandez did (12) during the 2018/19 Championship season.

These statistics, which were described as "sensational" by Scott Coyne of the Belgian Football Podcast, suggest that the Genk magician has the quality to be a terrific forward for the club and he could thrive alongside Rutter if Farke can snap him up in January.

How has Rutter performed this season?

The French wizard has enjoyed a fantastic start to the campaign and has proven himself to be a big threat at the top end of the pitch at Championship level.

Rutter has contributed with two goals and three assists in nine league starts for the Whites so far this season and has been an exceptional creator for Farke.

The former Hoffenheim prospect has produced ten 'big chances' for his teammates and only been rewarded with three assists for his efforts.

As per FBRef, the 21-year-old maestro ranks within the top 6% of his positional peers at Championship level for xAG (0.49) and shot-creating actions (4.27) per 90.

This essentially means that there are not many players in his position who are able to create high-quality chances as frequently as Rutter.

However, there is work to do with his own finishing as the talented youngster has missed five 'big chances' to go along with his two goals, which suggests that he could be more ruthless in front of goal.

Should Leeds sign Paintsil?

Leeds should, therefore, reignite their interest in Paintsil during the January transfer window as his goalscoring record for Genk suggests that he would thrive alongside Rutter.

The 5 foot 7 talent has proven himself to be a prolific scorer from a wide position and rarely misses presentable opportunities at the top end of the pitch, as shown by his aforementioned statistics from last season.

This suggests that the Whites target would be able to make the most of the chances that the French wizard is putting on a plate for his teammates week-in-week-out.

Paintsil's creative number also indicate that he could provide Rutter with the ammunition he needs to find the back of the net on a regular basis, if the ex-Bundesliga man can find his feet and form in front of goal during the second half of the season.

Mandhana equals record for fastest T20 fifty as Western Storm beat KSL leaders

She got to fifty in 18 balls, which was the tournament’s fastest half-century, shaving four deliveries off the previous record

Smriti Mandhana scored a brilliant unbeaten half-century – and smashed the tournament record for fastest fifty – as Western Storm beat Kia Super League leaders Loughborough Lightning by 18 runs in a match reduced by rain to six-overs-a-side at Taunton.Taking the aerial route and making the most of short boundaries, the 22-year-old left-hander from Mumbai smashed 52 off 19 balls with four sixes and five fours as Storm posted an imposing 85 for 2.New Zealand international Sophie Devine top scored with 46, but Storm bowled and fielded with iron discipline to restrict Lightning to 67 for 0 and inflict their first defeat in three outings.Bidding to extend their five-match winning record in KSL games at the Cooper Associates Ground, Storm lost the toss and were put into bat on a drying pitch beneath leaden skies.Charged with the task of getting the defending champions off to a good start, the new opening partnership of Mandhana and Rachel Priest accrued nine runs from the first over, sent down by Lynsey Smith.Off the mark with a straight six, Indian World Cup star Mandhana received a let-off when being dropped at mid-on with her score on seven in the first over. How Lightning must have regretted their profligacy when Mandhana heaved Sophie Devine over long-on for another maximum in the next over. Typically forthright in her approach, New Zealand international Priest also opened up her shoulders, twice clearing the rope as Devine went for 19 in one over.Displaying impressive fluency under pressure, the languid Mandhana drove Jenny Gunn to the long-off boundary as runs continued to flow. She then unleashed a startling cover drive for four at the expense of Kirstie Gordon as Storm brought up fifty in the fourth over.Attempting to match her team-mate blow for blow, the feisty Priest lifted Georgia Elwiss high over the mid-wicket boundary, a blow equalled in ferocity when Mandhana registered a massive six over long-on in the same over.Elwiss exacted revenge when Priest top-edged the final ball of the fifth over to wicketkeeper Amy Jones with the score on 71.England captain Heather Knight played across the line to Smith and departed for a first-ball duck as Storm briefly faltered, but Mandhana kept her foot to the floor, lifting Smith over long-off to realise 50 with her fourth maximum. Determined to get in on the act herself, West Indies international Stafanie Taylor then hoisted the final ball of the innings over deep square leg to stamp Storm’s authority. The Antipodean opening pair of Rachel Haynes and Devine took 11 off the first over, bowled by England World Cup winner Anya Shrubsole, while Freya Davies proved just as difficult to score against as Storm applied pressure.Appreciating the need to break free, the progressive Devine did rather better against Knight’s off spin, helping herself to a brace of sixes to keep Lightning in the hunt. But Taylor demonstrated clever variation as the fourth over yielded a mere seven runs, leaving the visitors to score 43 from 12 balls. When Davies kept things tight from the other end, Lightning required a notional 30 runs to win off the final over, a task that proved even beyond Devine, who finished four runs short of 50 in an innings that spanned 21 balls and included 3 fours and 4 sixes.

Faz parte do jogo.

Eles querem voltar a sangrar o Vasco.

Chelsea star now "set to leave" in January as club begin replacement search

It is believed that another Chelsea star is "set to leave" in the January transfer window, and the Blues are already searching for his replacement.

Chelsea players leaving in 2024

Stamford Bridge transfer chiefs Todd Boehly, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley have already overseen a major clearout this year, with Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi coming as the Chelsea players sold or loaned out in 2023.

Those exits raised around £230 million in total and helped to balance the books after a summer of serial spending. However, Chelsea want to sign a striker and are plotting further incomings for manager Mauricio Pochettino next year, meaning yet more of the Argentine's squad could be forced out the door. According to recent reports, there are a few candidates already.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Veteran defender Thiago Silva could leave Chelsea as his contract expires next summer, while left-back Marc Cucurella may also depart. Centre-back Trevoh Chalobah is "90%" likely to quit Chelsea too, according to reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Left-back Ian Maatsen, whose current deal expires in 2025, was another name mentioned but those links died down when Chelsea took up the option to extend his contract by an additional 12 months. However, it appears murmurs of a departure for the Dutchman have resurfaced this week.

Ian Maatsen "set to leave" in January

Having spent the 2022/2023 season on loan at Burnley, where he played a heavy hand in their promotion to the Premier League, Maatsen has been favoured by Pochettino on occasion this campaign. While his limits have been somewhat limited, the left-back's featured over six league appearances in total, with Chelsea's manager heaping praise on Maatsen for his intelligence.

"I am so happy with him," said Pochettino in a recent press conference.

"He is a player that can play in different positions. He has quality, he understands the game, and he is such a clever player. So far, he is in my plan, yes. I am so pleased with him, as I’ve said, because of his attitude, commitment and his understanding of the game."

Regardless, TEAMtalk now suggest that his future appears far away from west London. According to their information, Maatsen is "set to leave" Chelsea in the winter window. Burnley, Liverpool and Man City are named as suitors for the versatile 21-year-old, with Boehly and co already beginning the search for his replacement in January. Indeed, it is believed Inter Milan wing-back Federico Dimarco and Boca Juniours starlet Valentin Barco lead a two-man shortlist to succeed Maatsen.

The latter can actually sign a pre-contract in two months, as he is in the last year of his current deal with Boca Juniours. As such, it is believed Chelsea are ready to approach him over such a deal soon, while Dimarco comes as an enticing option given his form for the Nerazzurri. The Italian has even scored and bagged three assists in Serie A.

Bell-Drummond underlines Kent firepower in last-gasp win

Kent were involved in their second high-scoring affair in 24 hours and they sneaked it to secure a home tie in the last eight

ScorecardDaniel Bell-Drummond hammered his this third Vitality Blast half-century of the season to help Kent finish second in South Group and set up a home tie in the last four.Bell-Drummond was out at the start of the final over for 80 from 51 balls as Kent crossed the line with one ball to spare to record their eighth T20 win of the campaign. With Joe Denly, Bell-Drummond set the ball rolling in pursuit of 202 to win with a 98-run opening stand. When he departed he had hit eight fours and three sixes. The Spitfires had qualified for the knockout stages the night before when they beat Somerset by five runs in another high-scoring encounter. Their visit to The Cloudfm County Ground was, therefore, to decide venue and opponents for next week’s quarter-final.Despite the defeat, it was a memorable evening for Essex’s veteran all-rounder Ravi Bopara. He marked his 300th career T20 appearance by taking his 200th wicket, returning four-over figures of one for 22. He also claimed 25 off 10 balls, including two sixes, to move within seven runs of 6,000 in the 16 years of the shortest form of the game.Essex passed 200 for the second time in 24 hours, but only the second time this season after claiming only their second win of a dismal season against Middlesex on Thursday night. It was an Essex team chosen with an eye on the resumption of the Specsavers County Championship on Sunday against Somerset at Taunton. Captain Ryan ten Doeschate plus pacemen Peter Siddle and Sam Cook were rested, while spinner Aron Nijjar and Dutch international Shane Snater made their T20 debuts for the Eagles.Denly and Bell-Drummond made a storming start on the ground where they compiled a then world-record opening stand of 207 a year ago. They had fifty on the board inside five overs with both batsmen finding the boundary with some regularity and ease.Bell-Drummond hit the first three balls of Paul Walter’s second over for two fours and a straight six, and greeted Snater’s introduction with a six in an over that cost 23. Denly also hit Nijjar over his head for a six in his opening over.Bell-Drummond’s fifty took 27 balls, and included two sixes and six fours. But with the partnership approaching three-figures in nine overs he lost Denly. The all-rounder, who had earlier chipped in with two Essex wickets for 33, came down the wicket to Nijjar and found Michael Pepper on the long-off boundary He had contributed 45 from 23 balls, with seven fours and a six.Heino Kuhn did not last long before he became Bopara’s landmark victim when he was bowled. That brought in Sam Billings, the captain, and he wasted no time in leading from the front. Nijjar was deposited high over the ropes at long-leg and Harmer well over the midwicket boundary during a 19-ball 33 that took the Spitfires past 150 in the 15th over. He perished when Dan Lawrence took a diving catch as he raced in.Bell-Drummond survived a run-out attempt on 69 when Varun Chopra broke the non-striker’s wicket with a throw from the opposite end, but he was adjudged to have just made it back to his crease. With three overs left, Kent required 33 to win, 22 off two. They lost Alex Blake for 19 as he tried to work Snater off his legs, and Matt Coles snaffled the catch at short fine leg. They were still 20 runs short, but Snater helped them on their way with four wides and they needed nine runs from six balls. But Bell-Drummond exited with four balls left when held by Snater at deep midwicket to give Coles the wicket. However, Grant Stewart made up for some indifferent bowling by striking the winning boundary from the penultimate ball.Kent won the toss and opted to field. They were not helped when Stewart sent down three wides in his first four balls, and when he did bowl a legitimate delivery Varun Chopra pulled him over midwicket for six in an over that cost 15.Wheater had already reverse-swept a four off Denly, and taken successive boundaries off Haggett before paddle-sweeping a six off Milne to bring up the Eagles’ fifty at the start of the sixth over. The wicketkeeper-batsman dealt equally harshly with Imran Qayyum who went for two fours in a row. But he perished for a 25-ball 40, including six fours and that six, when he lofted Haggett to Sean Dickson on the midwicket rope. When Stewart returned, Chopra pulled a full-toss for his second six as Essex reached three-figures from 64 balls. But having already been tied up in knots by Denly, misjudged a straight one and was bowled for 37. Everton were bled dry by "useless" dud who cost the club £7.9m per goal

Everton have endured a slippery slide down the Premier League table in recent years and that is mostly down to their misfiring transfer strategy.

The Toffees have suffered through years of inadequacy and terrible decision-making on the transfer front, acquiring talent for ridiculous amounts and burning through the wage budget like there's no tomorrow.

Such is their consistent failures across numerous tenures, the Merseyside giants have allegedly breached financial fair play (FFP) rules and that is a searing indictment of the issues that have plagued them of late.

With years of overspending coming back to bite them as a potential 12-point deduction looms, it is easy to narrow down the list of stars who have contributed to their plight on and off the pitch.

Moise Kean, in particular, is one talent who exhibits Farhad Moshiri's addiction to emptying his deep pockets on players who have ultimately underperformed in the Blue of Everton.

Moise Kean's best qualities

During the Marco Silva tenure in the summer of 2019, Everton shelled out a whopping £29m on a 19-year-old Kean from Juventus.

At the time, the Italian wonderkid looked like he was worth every penny having terrorised defences in Serie A across the 2018/19 season.

The teenager was largely restricted to substitute appearances, but he still showcased his sharpness and predatory instincts in front of goal to gobble up chances, netting six in 13 matches in that campaign.

Perhaps more impressive, Kean was displaying his talents as a complete striker, coming out on top in the physical battle against defenders, peeling in behind with his searing pace and supplying a ruthless finish in front of goal.

According to FBref, the youngster ranked in the top 1% against his positional peers in Serie A for non-penalty goals, top 19% for successful take-ons, top 20% for pass completion and top 1% for aerials won.

When he arrived at Goodison Park, Kean had a whole host of competition to contend with in the striking department, including Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Cenk Tosun, but given his talents, he was expected to become a roaring success on Merseyside, however, that couldn't be any further from the truth.

The total cost of Moise Kean's transfer to Everton

Arriving as one of the most in-demand young strikers in Europe, a heavy weight of expectation was planted on the Italian's shoulders, and there is one key factor as to why he never lived up to the hype.

Speaking to CalcioMercato last year, Kean's brother, Giovanni Kean, revealed that he was very upset about his transfer to Everton, which happened less than two months after Maurizio Sarri took over as manager.

He said: "Allegri was the first to realize his potential. What a pleasure to see him score a brace against Lazio under the eyes of Sarri, who didn't want him. Kean was very upset about the transfer to Everton."

Kean's dejection unsurprisingly impacted his performance on the pitch, featuring 39 times for the club but only mustering four goals, two of which came against lower league opposition, Salford City and Fleetwood Town, in the Carabao Cup. There was even that wretched incident where Duncan Ferguson substituted him on, only to then drag him back off.

Having struggled to settle in England and leave his mark on the pitch, the Italian ultimately bled Everton dry of £2.7m in wages across his debut campaign, amounting to a total of £31.7m when factoring the initial £29m transfer fee.

In the 2020/21 campaign, Kean was granted the opportunity to join Paris Saint-Germain on loan, enjoying a successful spell at the French giants with 17 goals in 41 appearances, including three strikes in the Champions League. Impressive form indeed. Just where did that go at Goodison?

Since then, the 23-year-old has spent two seasons on loan at his former club Juventus, where his performance in the Coppa Italia final in 2022 was described as "useless" by journalist Tancredi Palmeri.

Despite his stop-start displays in Turin, the Italian giants triggered the £24m option to buy in his two-year loan in March, with Everton feeling fortunate to recoup most of what they initially forked out for him.
