Newcastle could raid Everton to sign Anthony Gordon 2.0 in January

"How many injuries have we got?" barked Kieran Trippier to a disgruntled fan following Newcastle United's 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday evening in what was a very unhappy return to the Vitality Stadium for manager Eddie Howe.

The Magpies are currently missing 13 players through injuries and suspensions and are down to the bare bones at the moment, having picked up just two wins from their last six games in all competitions.

The defence has been plagued with problems this season too. Both Dan Burn and Sven Botman will be missing in action for quite some time, while Matt Targett and Javi Manquillo are also unavailable. As a result, the Newcastle boss has already begun looking for defensive reinforcements.

Newcastle transfer latest

Back in January, the Geordie club dipped into Premier League rivals Everton's pool of players to strengthen the squad ahead of a tense top-four race. Eventually, the two clubs agreed on a £45m fee for Anthony Gordon and the winger was on his way to St. James' Park.

Amid an injury crisis at the club, FootballTransfers are reporting that Newcastle have their eyes on another gem from Goodison Park and will look to make a move for defender Jarrard Branthwaite when the winter window opens up in a few weeks' time.

The outlet are claiming that Howe is a massive fan of the former PSV Eindhoven loanee and believes the centre-back can be the perfect successor for Fabian Schar in the heart of the defence.

It was reported during the summer that Manchester United were keeping tabs on the 21-year-old, with Everton slapping a price tag of £25m on his back, although Branthwaite has now become a regular starter under Sean Dyche so this fee may have risen since.

Jarrard Branthwaite's stats this season

Having joined the Toffees from Carlisle United in 2020 for £1m, Branthwaite has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Everton, with 12 coming this season alone.

Following an impressive performance and a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Bournemouth back in October, journalist Elliot Bretland called the England U21s international an "unbelievable" talent as his stock at the highest level continues to rise.

In comparison with the rest of the centre-backs in the Premier League and Europe's top five leagues over the course of the last 365 days, Branthwaite impressively holds his own.

The defender is in the top 20% for tackles per 90, the top 8% for shots blocked per 90, the top 5% for passes blocked per 90 and the top 12% for ball recoveries per 90. Additionally, Branthwaite is also in the top 12% for goal-creating actions which proves he's also a threat from set-pieces and in the final third, not just a wonderful defender.

Branthwaite was Everton's Man of the Match during a 1-0 win away at West Ham at the end of the previous month. Premier League icon and pundit Alan Shearer described his display as "magnificent".

The Everton star is statistically better defensively than Schar this season and is winning 62.8% of his aerial duels while also making 1.7 interceptions per 90. In comparison, Newcastle's Swiss sergeant has won just 51.2% of his aerial duels this term and is making only 0.92 interceptions per 90.

Branthwaite has a higher ceiling than Schar and with the latter turning 32 in December, the Newcastle head coach would be wise to find a younger, long-term replacement.

The Everton defender fits the mould perfectly and could follow in the impressive footsteps of Gordon this winter. It's a transfer strategy that has already worked wonders with the young winger having registered six goal contributions this term. If Brathwaite could replicate performances like that, Howe and Co will have struck gold again.

Cricket Scotland announces fundraising appeal for 37-year-old left-arm spinning allrounder

Cricket Scotland has announced a fundraising appeal for 37-year-old left-arm spinning allrounder Con de Lange after it was revealed by his family over the weekend that de Lange is suffering from a brain tumour.De Lange had been missing from Scotland’s squads since the end of 2017, with team officials opting to refrain from comment when asked about his prolonged absence. The only communication on his health status came in the announcement of Scotland’s squad for the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe this past March, when a press release stated that de Lange “was unavailable for selection consideration due to an ongoing health issue”.A press release on Monday from Cricket Scotland stated that de Lange was diagnosed with a brain tumour approximately 10 months ago. De Lange has since undergone various forms of medical treatment – including an operation, radiation and chemotherapy – in an effort to battle the illness.”Cricket Scotland continues to support Con and his family and we have respected his wishes for confidentiality throughout this difficult period,” Cricket Scotland chief executive Malcolm Cannon said in the press release. “Con has been a superb servant to the game of cricket in Scotland and is a very popular member of the squad. We are now delighted to help the cause by spreading the word throughout the broader cricketing family both at home and overseas, and we know there will be an overwhelming level of support from this close-knit community.”De Lange last played for Scotland on November 25 in the second ODI against Papua New Guinea in Dubai, at which time he was serving as Scotland’s vice-captain. He was named in the Scotland squad against Ireland for the final round of the Intercontinental Cup, which started in the UAE a few days after the ODIs against PNG, as well as Scotland’s squad against Kenya for the final round of the WCL Championship in Dubai in the first week of December. But according to several sources, de Lange was kept out of those matches against Ireland and Kenya in Dubai while suffering from severe migraine headaches. Further testing upon his return home to Scotland revealed a far more serious diagnosis. The South Africa native has been a key member of Scotland’s teams since making his debut for his adopted home in June 2015, staking out a reputation as a handy middle and lower-order batsman and exceptional fielder in addition to his steady bowling. His best performance was a crucial 5 for 60 against Zimbabwe in the summer of 2017 to help secure a famous win, Scotland’s first ever in ODIs against a Full Member nation. Prior to playing for Scotland, he played 31 first-class matches for Cape Cobras in South Africa and then briefly with Northamptonshire on the county cricket circuit in England.

"No-brainer" – Journalist hints Spurs may strike "suitable" transfer deal

Journalist Dean Jones has suggested that Tottenham could strike a "suitable" transfer deal for one of their reported January targets.

Lange gets to work ahead of January

New sporting director Johan Lange has officially commenced work ahead of the looming winter window, after he arrived from Aston Villa on November 1. The Dane is tasked with backing manager Ange Postecoglou as the Spurs head coach currently contends with a wave of first team injury and suspension problems.

Tottenham's glaring lack of squad depth has been truly exposed of late, with as many as 10 players unavailable right now. Ashley Phillips, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur were most recently added to the growing Spurs injury list. Postecoglou, speaking to the press amid this crisis, confirmed late last week that plans are well underway to make new signings in the new year.

"I guess the challenge for us was they all came at once as it hasn't been staggered," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's injury problems, later sharing an update on Spurs' transfer plans.

"In terms of January, the planning is well away with that. Johan [Lange] has come in and he's leading that in terms of all the background work.

"My involvement and my own sort of ramp up to it as we get closer to January and understanding exactly what our requirements are at the moment, although work has been done in the background with Johan leading it and he's brought in some people to help him in that area. We'll work with him when the time is right."

Spurs reportedly want a left-sided centre-back, leading to links with Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly as one example, while there are also suggestions that Postecoglou wants a new winger at Tottenham. One of the targets to shore up Spurs' attacking options is Al-Ittihad forward Jota, a player who Postecoglou knows very well from his time at Celtic.

Tottenham could strike "suitable" Jota deal

The Portuguese could leave Al-Ittihad on loan in the winter, and Tottenham are a reported potential destination for Jota. Speaking to GiveMeSport, reporter Jones commented on the links and says Spurs could strike a "suitable" deal for Jota if they decide to go down that route. The journalist also says this would be a "no-brainer" move considering the terms available.

Celtic's former forward Jota.

"We still have to consider that Tottenham aren't going to just sign players based on a hunch because that's not the way they're going to do things anymore," said Jones.

"Your stats have to fit, specifically, with the vision of the future. But I think Jota would probably do that anyway, in terms of what Tottenham are going to be looking for from a player in that position.

"I think it is a bit of a no-brainer that Tottenham try to get this deal done because even the terms of it might be quite suitable."

The 24-year-old was an "exciting" player at Celtic (Alan Hutton), with Postecoglou really getting the best out of him north of the border. Indeed, perhaps the Australian can replicate that success with Jota at Spurs.

Jonny Bairstow an injury doubt for 4th ODI after damaging ankle

Opener injures right ankle during England’s training session and may be replaced by Alex Hales

Jonny Bairstow has emerged as an injury doubt ahead of Saturday’s fourth ODI against Sri Lanka after injuring his right ankle during England’s training session on the eve of the match at Pallekele.Bairstow, who went past 1000 ODI runs for the calendar year during England’s seven-wicket win in the third match on Wednesday, suffered the injury while playing football on the outfield. He will be assessed by the team medical staff and a decision on his availability will be made before the start of the game. If the injury has not cleared up overnight, he is expected to undergo a scan when the squad arrives in Colombo ahead of the fifth and final ODI next week. However, Bairstow will be hugely reluctant to vacate his place at the top of the order. In the build-up to England’s World Cup campaign, he is in the midst of a three-way tussle for two opening berths, alongside Jason Roy and Alex Hales.Hales is currently the man on the outside looking in, and he will doubtless be itching to seize back his place, having lost out only two matches after he top-scored with 147 out of England’s world-record 481 for 6 against Australia at Trent Bridge in June. The opportunity could be particularly timely for Hales too, coming as it does before his Cricket Disciplinary Commission hearing in December, relating to the Ben Stokes incident in Bristol last year. With the prospect of a ban looming, potentially during the West Indies tour in the new year, Hales may have the next two matches to remind England of his qualities before they have to start finalising their World Cup squad.Another man who could conceivably be in line for a call-up, however, is Joe Denly, a late inclusion in the squad after Liam Dawson suffered a side strain in the opening match of the series.Ironically, Denly himself was on the receiving end of a notable football injury during his last incarnation as an England cricketer. He suffered bone bruising after being tackled by Owais Shah during a warm-up at The Oval in September 2009, and never went on to cement a permanent place in the side. This particular incident was not believed to be the result of a bad tackle. However, Trevor Bayliss, England’s head coach, is unlikely to prevent the players from warming up by playing football, as he still believes that the benefits of them enjoying the competition outweigh the risks of injury.

Kusal Mendis eyes double-ton as mentor Samaraweera's send-off gift

Sri Lanka batting coach Thilan Samaraweera will exit the role at the end of this series, and Kusal Mendis is keen on fulfilling his wish

Kusal Mendis has paid tribute to outgoing Sri Lanka batting coach Thilan Samaraweera, and hopes to complete a double-hundred on day five, as a leaving present for a man who has seen him through tough times both professionally and personally.Samaraweera, who has been the team’s batting coach for a year, is due to be replaced by former Durham coach Jon Lewis at the end of the Test series. Mendis went through one of the leanest periods of his career in the past few months – hitting only one fifty across formats in 23 innings between mid-June and mid-November – and credits Samaraweera with helping him out of that rut.”I’m really thankful to Thilan because I was in a really low place – I had failed about 15 one-dayers, and still the coach (Chandika Hathurusingha) and Thilan refused to drop me,” Mendis said after batting out the entirety of day four in Wellington, hitting his sixth Test ton in the process. “They let me play Tests again. I was only only able to get here because they stood by me. Thilan goes after the next Test, but I’m really thankful to him. I was only able to do this because of them.”Mendis revealed that Samaraweera had taken an interest in his career long before he had taken up an official role with the Sri Lanka side. In early 2017, when Samaraweera was serving a short stint as Bangladesh’s batting coach – also under head coach Hathurusingha – Mendis had hit 196 against Bangladesh in Galle, falling four short of a double ton. Samaraweera had then sought him out and given him advice despite having been the opposition’s batting coach.”I remember one time in Sri Lanka, I got out for 196. Thilan was coaching Bangladesh at the time. He told me: ‘You will later realise what you’ve done. You’ve got more talent than that. To be able to score 200 at your age means you’ve got a big future.’Then when he had become our coach, I missed a double-ton again, against Bangladesh (making 194 in Chittagong earlier this year). He told me the same thing again.”Mendis said he was determined to make the double-century happen on day five. Provided the weather stays good, he will resume his innings on 116.”Before this Test he told me: ‘Before I leave, hit a double-hundred.’ So I’m trying my best to score a double for him. He’s helped me so much. Everyone in the team knows how much he’s helped. Not just on the cricket side of things, but he’s helped me personally as well.”
