Wadkar keeps Vidarbha afloat as Rest of India chip away

Ranji Trophy champions end second day on 245 for 6, still 85 runs in arrears

The Report by Sreshth Shah in Nagpur13-Feb-2019

Akshay Wadkar plays a sweep•PTI

Stumps Despite losing only six wickets on the second day, Vidarbha failed to take control of the Irani Cup tie in Nagpur, as their attritional batting kept them 85 runs behind Rest of India’s 330 when play ended. It was because of some disciplined bowling from the RoI spinners that Vidarbha could not get away. K Gowtham (2-33) and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (2-66) broke stands at crucial junctures, as the spin trio – Rahul Chahar is the third – took five of the six wickets. The game was still in the balance with Akshay Wadkar, the wicketkeeper-batsman, leading the way for Vidarbha, but pacer Ankit Rajpoot’s wicket of allrounder Aditya Sarwate for 18 three overs before stumps swung the pendulum RoI’s way.Vidarbha did put up three 50-plus stands through the course of the day, but with a run rate of only 2.72, they could never impose themselves. Opener R Sanjay (65) and No. 4 Ganesh Satish (48) anchored Vidarbha’s innings in the first and second sessions, but their dismissals at important stages of the game pegged back their progress. At stumps, Wadkar’s unbeaten 98-ball 50 kept Vidarbha in the hunt for a lead, but he desperately needs one of the tail-enders to give him company. The day began with Sanjay and captain Faiz Fazal playing cautiously for the first ten overs. Inswingers from Rajpoot and Tanveer-ul-Haq kept their run-flow in check, and by the tenth over, they had added only 15 runs. But after bunting the new ball for nearly an hour, batting became easier when spinners Gowtham and Jadeja were introduced.Dharmendrasinh Jadeja celebrates a wicket•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The first Vidarbha wicket went to Gowtham soon after the pair had crossed the 50-run mark in the 21st over. Fazal prodded forward to defend an offbreak, but the ball held its line and grazed his glove. Ishan Kishan went up for a caught-behind appeal straightaway, but the umpire raised his finger only after consulting his partner.Atharwa Taide, who was a late inclusion in the XI for the injured Wasim Jaffer, then lit up the morning with a late cut and a pull off Gowtham in the 25th over, effectively hitting him out of the attack. But Chahar, the legspinner, prised Taide out with a quicker delivery on middle stump that trapped the batsman in front. That brought in Satish, who controlled proceedings before lunch in Sanjay’s company, and they went on to add 62 for the third wicket. Satish, in particular, used his feet well to play the spinners, as they opted to bowl slow. Sanjay, on the other hand, preferred the sweep to deal with the spin. The partnership, chanceless until it was broken, was taking the game Vidarbha’s way, but Sanjay’s dismissal – a chip off Jadeja going to Hanuma Vihari under the helmet at short cover in the 56th over – breathed new life in the RoI bowlers. One wicket brought another from the opposite end, as Gowtham collected his second scalp. Mohit Kale tried to steer one, but only got a thick edge through to the wicketkeeper. The ball hit Kishan around the mid-section before lobbing into the air, and Kishan recovered to complete a smart take diving backwards. It required a confirmation from the TV umpire for Kale to start walking for just one.But Gowtham, diving to field one off his own bowling in the same over, suffered a shoulder injury and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.Satish was in control through the second session until the penultimate over before tea. Jadeja, in his first over of a new spell, got a length ball to slide in rapidly, and trapped Satish right in front of middle stump two runs short of his half-century.That brought in Aditya Sarwate, the allrounder who scored 102 in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final and a valuable second-innings 49 in the Ranji Trophy final. Sarwate, together with Wadkar, added 58 for the sixth wicket after tea. They pinched singles, ran hard doubles, and hit the occasional boundary to take Vidarbha past 200. Sarwate, however, fell ten minutes before stumps to a vicious inswinger from Rajpoot, trapped in front of off stump. The last three overs were tentatively seen out by Wadkar, who reached his sixth half-century during that period, but at the other end, No. 8 Akshay Karnewar had no plans of dead-batting the day away. He struck three boundaries off his first five deliveries to force Rahane to set a more defensive field, and at stumps, he was by Wadkar’s side with an unbeaten run-a-ball 15.

“World-class” Casemiro has big offer on table to leave Man Utd in January

Manchester United could be set to lose one of their first-team stars next month, with a fresh report revealing that he’s received an offer to leave ahead of January.

Man United's summer departures

The Red Devils sanctioned the sales of 11 players during the previous window, with eight of those being on a permanent basis, while the remaining three were sent out on loan for the rest of the season in order to increase their experience and game time.

According to The Daily Mail, Erik ten Hag’s side are open to offers for Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial in the coming weeks, with the club’s football director, John Murtough, having travelled to Saudi Arabia to seek destinations for the out of favour players.

At Old Trafford, Casemiro is another squad member on that same list, with the defensive midfielder having made just eight appearances this season in the Premier League due to having missed the last nine games with a knock (Transfermarkt – Casemiro statistics).

The Brazil international has already attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Al-Hilal and an unnamed club in the Serie A, but if the following update is to be believed, the 31-year-old has been given the chance to move onto new pastures in the coming weeks.

Casemiro gets Saudi Arabia proposal

According to Spanish outlet Marca (via Sport Witness), Casemiro has received an “important offer” from Saudi Arabia, but it’s not stated which club it has come from.

The Man United veteran has recently been considering a “change of scenery”, and with his new proposal coming with a “lot of money”, he could be tempted to accept the deal.

The M16 outfit would be looking to recoup at least part of the €70m (£60m) that they paid for the talisman when he joined from Real Madrid, so this could be one to keep a close eye on in the coming weeks.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Man United need to keep "world-class" Casemiro

As it stands, Casemiro currently ranks in the 99th percentile for blocks and the 97th percentile for clearances, showing that he’s not afraid to put his body on the line and get stuck in to clear the danger and regain possession for his team (FBRef – Casemiro statistics).

However, Ten Hag’s star is also capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch having clocked up five involvements, four goals and one assist, from 12 appearances across all competitions since the start of the season.

As hailed by Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, Casemiro is a “world-class” player and the club could be making a huge mistake if they were to sanction his sale next month, especially considering that he has been their best-performing defensive player this campaign (WhoScored – Man United statistics).

Arsenal plan to sell Eddie Nketiah and replace him with "complete” ace

During last summer's transfer window, three Premier League teams – Chelsea (£424.8m), Spurs (£213.4m) and Manchester City (£211.1m) – spent more than Arsenal (£203.5m) outright. However, when you go by net spend, the Gunners (£124.7m) were second only to Chelsea (£203.5m) in the league rankings.

Until their London rivals signed Moises Caicedo in mid-August, Arsenal's move for West Ham midfielder Declan Rice was the most expensive ever conducted between two English clubs. On top of that, they acquired attacker Kai Havertz from Stamford Bridge, defender Jurrien Timber from Ajax and goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford on an initial loan.

Given that, relatively speaking, Arsenal weren't able to recoup much of this spend back through sales, it's no surprise that manager Mikel Arteta needs to think about balancing the books if he wants to add to his squad again in January.

Nketiah price set at £30m

According to The Star, Arsenal have slapped a £30m price tag on striker Eddie Nketiah amid interest from Crystal Palace. Nketiah is "highly-regarded at the Emirates" and so the Gunners will drive a hard bargain, even insisting upon a sell-on clause as part of a potential transfer.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

The possible departure of Nketiah is connected to the arrival of a new centre-forward, with Arsenal interested in Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke as well as the well documented links to Brentford's Ivan Toney. Nketiah's exit could free up the funds and space to make a move for a new number nine.

"Complete" Solanke is better than Nketiah

Nketiah has played a significant volume of football this season, appearing in 27 matches and logging 1,266 minutes overall. He's started half of Arsenal's 20 Premier League games and banged in six goals, an average of one every 211 minutes. He's shown he's a decent understudy to Gabriel Jesus, but if Arsenal are keen on an upgrade and Nketiah commands a significant fee, then there's little point keeping him round.

At the start of the season, few Gunners fans would have had any interest in links with Solanke, who had never scored more than six goals in a Premier League season. However, just 20 games into the current campaign, he's already doubled that tally, with only Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland (both 14) ahead of him in the rankings.

Significantly, Solanke's output looks sustainable. He's only marginally out-performing his xG (11.0), so you can't put his dramatic upturn down to freakishly good finishing (FBRef). Instead, it's reflective of the quality of his opportunities, and by extension, the intelligence of his movement in and around the penalty area.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who has scored more Premier League goals for the club than anybody else, is a big fan of Solanke, crediting him for a "brilliant" run of form after watching him "struggle" early in his career (Bournemouth Echo).

Meanwhile, Andoni Iraola, his manager at Bournemouth, has billed him the "complete" striker, emphasising that there are facets to his game beyond goalscoring. Indeed, when compared to positional peers over the last year, the 26-year-old ranks in the 75th percentile or better for blocks (0.9), clearances (1.4), progressive carries (1.96) and successful take-ons (1.26), which shows that he's a committed press-leader and a gifted dribbler (FBRef). No wonder Arsenal are interested in such a convincing all-round package.

West Indies ready to spring World Cup surprise, say coaches

Richard Pybus and Trevor Bayliss in agreement about potency of squad, despite lowly world ranking

George Dobell in Grenada25-Feb-2019West Indies can cause a shock – and perhaps even win – the World Cup, according to the England and West Indies coaches. While West Indies’ recent record is not promising – they have not won a bilateral ODI series since 2014, have won only two of their lastseven completed ODIs and are currently ranked No. 9 in the world – the coaches of both sides in the current series in the Caribbean believethey are a fast-improving, dangerous side who could beat “anyone on their day”.”I know the right West Indies combination with a fully focussed side can beat anyone on their day,” Richard Pybus, West Indies’ interim coach, said. “I wasn’t at the World Cup qualifiers but, with the group of guys we have now, we feel confident could take down anyone on their day.”Key to West Indies’ improved confidence is the return of several high-profile players. Darren Bravo returned in December, Chris Gayle returned for this series – and has responded with a century and half-century – while Andre Russell is expected to return for the fourth ODI in Grenada on Wednesday. As a result, West Indies look as if they have the firepower to damage more opponents.”The West Indies have been playing some decent cricket over the last 18 months,” Trevor Bayliss, the England coach, agreed. “With the size of their batters and the way some of them hit the ball they can be a chance of winning that World Cup.”While he was unable to confirm whether Gayle had done enough to cement his place as opener at the World Cup, Pybus did say he had made a “very resounding case” and defended his somewhat careful starts in each of the first two ODIs.”I can’t speak on behalf of the selectors but I think Chris has put forward a very resounding case,” Pybus said. “He’s just class really. It’s always great having guys in your side who are a bit scary for the opposition who know full well what they can deliver.”In those first two games, Chris was getting a feel for a spongy wicket batting first. It can be a game of two halves in Barbados. He was playing himself through. But, as we have all seen in T20, he can attack that first powerplay brutally. On good wickets he’ll be going hard pretty early.”

Corinthians sai atrás contra a Ponte, vira o jogo e volta a vencer

MUDANÇAS NO TIME TITULAR

EMPATE NO FIM DO PRIMEIRO TEMPO

CHUVA E OTERO MUDAM O JOGO
O técnico Vagner Mancini promoveu a entrada do venezuelano Otero, que começou a arriscar chutes e levar perigo à meta adversária.

VIRADA ENCERRA JEJUM

Alex Hales cleared for county comeback as Notts issue behaviour warning

Notts batsman will begin county comeback as England team-mates begin their one-off ODI against Ireland in Dublin

Alex Hales celebrates his hundred•Getty Images

Alex Hales has been given a clear warning about his future as he prepares to make his return to action for Nottinghamshire against Durham in Grantham on Friday, following the 21-day drugs ban that led to his axing from the England World Cup squad.Fitness permitting, Hales – who was said to be “devastated” after being stood down from England’s 15-man preliminary squad for the World Cup – will begin his comeback in the Royal London Cup at the same time that his former team-mates begin their one-off ODI against Ireland in Dublin. He will do so with an unequivocal warning from his county ringing in his ears, after the club said in a statement that his actions, which include two failed tests for recreational drugs as well as his role in the fracas outside a Bristol nightclub in September 20117, “have, at times, fallen way short of the behaviours the club expects from any of its staff”.Hales, who is on a white-ball-only contract at Nottinghamshire after making himself unavailable for four-day cricket last season, has missed the entirety of the club’s Royal London campaign to date. He is out of contract at the club at the end of the season, making the remaining two group matches, as well as the knock-out phases for which the club is well placed to progress, especially crucial to the rebuilding of his career.”The recent events in relation to Alex Hales have been difficult for everyone involved with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club,” said the club on its website. “Alex’s off-field actions have, at times, fallen way short of the behaviours the club expects from any of its staff.”Hales attended an England squad get-together in Cardiff over the weekend, but was removed from the squad on Monday morning, reportedly with the blessing of the team hierarchy, who believe his behavioural issues, and his lack of repentance, are an unwelcome distraction on the eve of the team’s biggest challenge. And, having met with Nottinghamshire’s management to assess his readiness for a comeback, Hales would appear now to have recognised that the situation he is in is one of his own making, having initially accused the ECB of reneging on a commitment to back him in spite of his ban.”Following his withdrawal from all England squads this week, we have met with Alex to express our concerns and to re-iterate that such actions cannot continue,” said the club.”The meeting was open, honest and constructive and a way forward was agreed between both parties. Alex has expressed a great deal of regret and contrition for his actions and he has ultimately paid a heavy price.”He accepts that the position he finds himself in is of his own making. He knows he has a long road back to redeem himself in the eyes of many people, but that now has to be his aim.”After much deliberation, we believe it’s in the best interests of all concerned for him to get back to playing cricket for Nottinghamshire as quickly as possible.”With his suspension now served, he is available for selection for all white-ball cricket for the remainder of the 2019 season, starting with the fixture against Durham on Friday.”As Alex’s County Club, we will work with him, the PCA and the ECB to look after his welfare and to ensure he receives the support and guidance he needs to work through this experience and to prevent any re-occurrences.”
