In recent years, Everton have had numerous players that have featured at the top end of the pitch, as the club have looked to maintain their record of being present in every Premier League campaign.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has often been Sean Dyche's first choice, but the 26-year-old has suffered multiple injuries that have disrupted his progress at Goodison Park.

Beto joined the Toffees in a £25m deal from Udinese this summer but has failed to make an impact, scoring just once in 18 Premier League outings.

Dyche's side have scored the third-lowest number of goals in the Premier League with 26, only Sheffield United and Burnley have scored less so far this campaign.

With the Toffees already being charged for breaking FFP rules this season, they haven't been able to strengthen their forward line during the January transfer window. Depending on what division they find themselves in next season, they may choose to address the situation, but should they have stuck with a former attacker instead?

Ademola Lookman's time at Everton

Everton signed forward Ademola Lookman from Charlton Athletic for a fee in the region of £7.5m in January 2017, with the youngster touted as 'one for the future' after he arrived at Goodison.

Arriving at the club as a 19-year-old, Lookman made an instant impact on the first-team under then-boss Ronald Koeman, scoring on his debut in a 4-0 rout over Manchester City. However, the goal against Pep Guardiola's side would be the only time he scored for the Toffees before leaving the club to join RB Leipzig on loan.

Despite his tender age, Lookman excelled in Germany, scoring five times in just 11 Bundesliga appearances – form that saw the youngster be selected for the England U21 squad. Upon his return for the 2018/19 season, the forward was restricted to limited minutes for the Toffees, featuring for a total of 601 minutes throughout the entire campaign.

Lookman subsequently rejoined RB Leipzig permanently in the summer of 2019, for a fee rumoured to be in the region of £18m – a deal that still brought a £10m profit for the Blues.

Since his departure from Goodison in 2019, the now-Nigerian international has spent two campaigns on loan back in the Premier League with Fulham and Leicester City. Whilst featuring frequently during both spells, neither resulted in a permanent deal back to the Premier League, with the winger joining Atalanta in Italy for £13m in August 2022.

Since his move to Serie A, the now 26-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant spell, which has seen him outscore one-time Everton hero Richarlison over the last two seasons. Lookman netted 13 times last season, with the striker continuing his brilliant form this term, with seven goals in 18 outings.

The former Everton man has turned into an "incredible" talent – as dubbed by Statman Dave – with his stats this campaign nothing short of sensational. Lookman has averaged 3.8 progressive carries per game this season, whilst receiving 11.2 progressive passes – showcasing his brilliant positioning within the final third.

Lookman has also averaged 4.5 shot-creating actions per 90 this season – putting him within the top 3% of all forwards in Europe.

Whilst Everton still made a decent profit on Lookman, his form in front of goal this season would've been a huge benefit to the Toffees given the lack of goals scored throughout the Premier League this campaign.

The Seagulls made just two signings during the January transfer window, which may have been influenced by the dangers of FFP as it's had pretty much every Premier League club looking over their shoulder.

Roberto De Zerbi's side did have links to other players that arose during the winter window but they decided only to pull the trigger on two, so it's now all eyes on the summer transfer window, with a European place up for grabs.

Latest Brighton transfer rumours

According to TalkSPORT, Brighton have beaten West Ham United to the signing of Ibrahim Osman, who will join for a potential £17 million from FC Nordsjaelland in the summer.

According to Sport, Brighton are seeking around £42.7 million for Kaoru Mitoma with Barcelona eyeing a deal. It's stated that Ansu Fati could join the Seagulls permanently as part of a deal for the Japanese star.

Speaking to SPORT Bild, Denis Undav has stated that he's interested in securing a permanent move to Stuttgart once his loan deal expires.

Brighton 2023/24 transfers

The Seagulls had big money to spend this summer after a number of key sales, but in typical Brighton fashion, they decided to spend it mostly on young, up-and-coming players like Joao Pedro, Carlos Baleba, Bart Verbruggen and Igor.

As well as this, they added experience in the form of James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud, plus Ansu Fati on loan.

And, a couple of promising January additions to round things off.

Sri Lanka seamer Nuwan Kulasekara has retired from international cricket with immediate effect. He remains open to playing global domestic T20 tournaments.Known for his ability to swing the new ball both ways, the 37-year old exits as Sri Lanka’s third-highest ODI wicket-taker among seamers, behind Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga, with 199 wickets in 184 matches. Kulasekara is also the joint second-highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka in T20Is, with 66 wickets in 58 matches, behind Malinga on the list.ALSO READ – The Nuwan Kulasekara profile by Andrew Fidel FernandoKulasekara last represented Sri Lanka in an ODI against Zimbabwe in Hambantota in July 2017 and hasn’t played a competitive game since March 2018.Kulasekara revealed that he had been due to announce his decision immediately after the World Cup but had held off following a special request by Lasith Malinga to play alongside him in one final ODI.”I was going to announce my retirement straight after the World Cup but Lasith Malinga made a special request during the world cup to play alongside me in his final game. As such, I wanted to see if there was any way to make that happen. That’s why my retirement announcement was delayed,” he explained.”I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Lasith for remembering me. It shows great strength for one cricketer to speak about another, and it’s not the first time Lasith has done something like this.”With Malinga set to retire following the first ODI against Bangladesh, Kulasekara revealed that he had followed Malinga in making an official request to SLC to be included in that game. However, with SLC not having responded to either request, Kulasekara said he knew his time was up.”It was because of Lasith’s request that I also made a request to SLC, to see if there was a possibility of being selected in a farewell match. But I don’t think it fit in with SLC’s plans as I haven’t heard back from them.”They did however say that the third ODI will be dedicated to me, even though that’s not what I had requested. What I had asked was whether it was possible to do what Malinga had suggested, and play [with him] in his final game, together. But a 22-man squad had already been selected, and it’s from that squad that the team for the first ODI is going to be selected. So, with the match just a couple of days away, I felt that there was no chance of that happening, which is why I’m announcing my retirement now.”In ODIs, Kulasekara was ranked as the No.1 bowler in March 2009 and nearly four years later, he took career-best ODI figures of 5 for 22 against Australia in Brisbane. Kulasekara, though, wasn’t as effective in Tests and ended with 48 wickets in 21 games, the last of which came in 2014 at Lord’s, where Sri Lanka clung on for a thrilling draw.For a player constantly in the background, a rare moment in the spotlight saw him look back on these moments fondly.”I had the privilege of representing Sri Lanka in every major ICC event between 2007-2014, where the team played in two 50-over World Cup finals, three T20 World Cup finals, including our victorious one in 2014 against India. I was honoured to be the vice-captain of this World Cup-winning team.”There are several instances that come to mind [when I think of my favourite memories on the field]. Bowling the penultimate over of the 2014 World T20 final definitely stands out. Before that, in the first match we played in that tournament against South Africa; I won’t forget bowling the 19th over in that game either. My five wickets against Australia in Brisbane also stands out.”There was also the Test against England at Lord’s in 2006, where [Chaminda] Vaas and I managed to put together a good partnership [of 61 runs in the first innings and then a 105-run stand in the second] to help draw the game [in which Kulasekara also scored 64, his only Test fifty].”I represented my team and nation with the highest amount of pride and admiration; nothing was more important to me than seeing Sri Lanka at the top of world cricket. I have no regrets, every day that I played cricket I was happy, and I leave the sport happily.”

Liam Dawson’s fourth half-century of the season steered Hampshire to the safety of a draw on the final day of their County Championship fixture with Surrey at The Oval.The visitors looked in trouble after Amar Virdi’s three wickets reduced them to 175 for 5 shortly before tea, still 37 away from an innings defeat.But Dawson, who was 65 not out having scored a century against Surrey in the Royal London Cup earlier in the season, proved their nemesis again, batting for two hours to take Hampshire to 253 for 5 in company with debutant Harry Came, who remained not out 23 as they avoided defeat.Earlier, Ollie Pope had completed a maiden County Championship double century to set up the hosts’ morning declaration before hot-footing it to Headingly as England cover should Jason Roy be ruled out of the third Test with possible concussion.Surrey began the day 123 ahead and in need of quick runs. Skipper Ben Foakes was bowled through the gate before the go button could be pressed, but Pope continued serenely onto his double hundred from 323 balls with 19 fours.Rikki Clarke hoisted Dawson for a huge straight six to provide the necessary acceleration before being adjudged lbw to Fidel Edwards, who claimed 5 for 125, though replays suggested the ball would have missed leg-stump.The declaration came soon afterwards at 579 for 7 with Pope 221 not out, which left Hampshire 212 in arrears and with 40 minutes to negotiate before lunch.The hosts spurned a chance when Ryan Patel dropped Felix Organ at third slip after he was on eight, but they made the breakthrough with the last ball before the interval, Virdi having Ian Holland caught down the leg side by Foakes.There was more encouragement soon after the resumption when Clarke pinned England hopeful James Vince in front for just a single to leave Hampshire 39 for 2.It was clear the visitors’ intent was to play positively in a bid to wipe out their arrears and get in front. He looked increasingly confident, but with a second century in as many matches beckoning he, like Northeast, contributed to his own downfall, giving Virdi the charge and missing the ball to be stumped by Foakes.The same combination would account for Rilee Rossouw before the end of the session, though the South African should probably reflect on why he was playing a needless sweep shot so close to an interval.Hampshire were wobbling but Dawson dug in, finding an ally in Came, who showed great composure for a man making his first appearance six days shy of his 21st birthday as a concussion replacement for Aneurin Donald, who was injured in the field on day three.Dawson’s 50 came in 63 balls to wipe out the arrears and the pair shared a half-century stand in the game’s dying embers.
