Virat Kohli's India 'need to win big tournaments' – Sourav Ganguly

His focus will be on board matters and he doesn’t want to get involved with on-field issues, Ganguly said

At home, Virat Kohli’s India have established a dominance that has drawn comparisons with the Australian teams led by Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, who were almost invincible at home. They have also become one of the best travelling units, especially with their well-rounded bowling attack finding unprecedented success on the road. And yet, this India side is yet to win a global title. And that “big tournament” is what former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who will take charge soon as BCCI president, reckons India need to win.”It [India] is a very good side,” Ganguly said at a media briefing on Tuesday at the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) headquarters, housed at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. “My only thing is that they need to win big tournaments. I’m not saying they need to win every time. It’s not possible. But we have gone through seven [five] big tournaments without winning one.”Since MS Dhoni’s India won the 2013 Champions Trophy, India – men and women – have not won any global title at the senior level. India reached the semi-finals in the two men’s ODI World Cups – 2015 and 2019 – as well as the 2016 T20 World Cup, and finished runners-up at the 2014 men’s T20 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy. Alongside, the women lost in the 2017 World Cup final to hosts England, who also beat them in the 2018 T20 World Cup in the semi-finals.”They are a much better side than that,” Ganguly said. “That is the only area where they need to get themselves ready mentally. Talent is enormous, otherwise they couldn’t have played so well in the [2019] World Cup till the semi-finals. So that’s an issue which Virat needs to address. And that doesn’t happen in the boardroom.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Ganguly also hinted that he did not want to interfere with the dressing room and on-field issues. “I cannot decide contribute much on the field because (on-field matters must stay on the field).”On Tuesday, Ganguly received a rapturous welcome as he arrived in Kolkata, his hometown, first at the airport and then at the CAB, after he was picked as the unanimous choice by several powerful BCCI members as the sole nominee for the president’s position.Ganguly, only the second cricketer to be a BCCI president since Maharaja of Vizianagaram in 1954, will officially assume the post next week. Ganguly has only about ten months in the job as he will finish six years as an office-bearer next year, following which he will need to undergo a cooling-off period of three years. After filing his nomination on Monday, Ganguly had stressed that the BCCI was in an “emergency” situation. He reiterated that on Tuesday, saying that he would try to find solutions for the ongoing issues with the board. “I am happy to get the responsibility to turn it around. That’s what matters: when it is tough people believe that you are good enough to do it,” Ganguly said. “I am here to do a job for everyone and to make Indian cricket clean administration-wise, to get the backroom ready and going in a smooth one along with all the members of the Apex Council and the board and everyone. That’s my job.”

Steve Clarke sweating on fitness of Rangers star after Scotland update

One Rangers star has left his national team boss sweating on his fitness over the upcoming international break, with question marks placed over his position in the squad for EURO 2024.

Rangers stars heading on international duty

Six of Rangers' squad are heading off on International duty this March – Rabbi Matondo (Wales), Ross McCausland (Northern Ireland), John Souttar (Scotland), Cryriel Dessers (Nigeria) and Mohamed Diomande (Ghana) will be representing their senior sides, while Leon King has also been called up for Scotland's U21s.

"Money talks" – Journalist shares news on James Tavernier's Rangers future

Rangers might be in a spot of bother if this comes to fruition.

ByBen Browning Mar 20, 2024

It means that Gers boss Philippe Clement will have the majority of his squad at Ibrox as he looks to continue their push for the Scottish Premiership title, knowing that should they win their game in hand against Dundee they will move back above Celtic into top spot, while they also have to welcome their arch rivals to Ibrox before the end of the campaign.

One man who hasn't headed away is regular absentee Ryan Jack, who has already missed large chunks of the season through injury for his club and continues to struggle with fitness problems.

Decision made on Ryan Jack

Despite these problems, Steve Clarke has decided to consider him for the Scotland squad this summer, providing he can prove his fitness before the squad is announced, which is perhaps good news for Gers fans hoping to see him back before the end of the domestic season.

The 32-year-old has managed just 11 Scottish Premiership appearances this campaign, and though he returned to the substitutes bench in their most recent outing (a 2-1 defeat to Motherwell) he has seen just 13 minutes of action since the beginning of February.

Ryan Jack

Rangers boss Clement has hardly been forthcoming about his situation either. Speaking ahead of his side's clash with Hibs, Clement explained that: "We lost Ryan Jack for a short time. He picked up a small injury in the trip to Lisbon so that's a big disappointment because I was planning to start with him today, so we had to change our plans."

That has not changed Clarke's stance though. According to The Scottish Daily Mail, Jack will be handed the chance to 'prove his fitness' to the Scotland boss, though in exchange Clarke will demand 'honesty and transparency' from his midfielder.

Though the midfielder is set to miss the upcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland, he is hoping to be back fit after the international break and will aim to remain so heading into EURO 2024 this summer. Should he be able to 'prove his fitness, his ability, and whether he can play consistent minutes', he will have an 'excellent chance' at remaining in the Scotland squad for the tournament, which implies we should see him play a part in the title run-in.

His future beyond this summer is unclear though, with his contract up at Rangers come the end of the campaign and without a new deal in the works as things stand. For now though, his full focus will be on heading to the EUROs with Scotland in three months time.

West Ham must now bench 4/10 man who was even worse than Phillips

There was a moment, about 75 minutes into West Ham United's clash against Newcastle United on Tyneside when the travelling support was in full voice, the voluble Hammers overwhelming their beleaguered hosts.

West Ham's campaign has been affected by defensive deficiencies and this was certainly on show at St. James' Park, with David Moyes' side squandering a 3-1 lead to hand Newcastle a lifeline in their fight for European qualification.

West Ham United manager David Moyes looks dejected during a Premier League match.

It was a true thriller, one of those matches they whack on a billboard to advertise the Premier League and all it entails, but West Ham will not care about that; they succumbed to pressure, lost a commanding position and now have a tenuous hold on seventh spot in the top-flight.

It all changed when Kalvin Phillips was introduced, 69 minutes in.

Kalvin Phillips' performance vs Newcastle

Phillips probably arrived at the London Stadium in January brimming with hope, sanguine in his conviction that a nightmare spell with Manchester City was behind him, and that he could strut his stuff at the highest level with avidity once again.

It's quite remarkable, genuinely astounding, how bad he has been in an Irons shirt, seemingly making an error every time he takes to the pitch.

At Newcastle, Phillips conceded the penalty that allowed Alexander Isak to net his brace, halving the deficit after 75 minutes. He completed 13 touches across 21 minutes of action; he lost the ball five times, completing four of nine attempted passes, as per Sofascore.

This is beyond rusty, this is beyond a blip. Phillips is beset with a staggering loss of confidence that has seeped into his industrious skill set, like a pot of oil spilled into a body of water, tainting it, spoiling it.

There's a claim, however, that the England man's adjudged foul on Anthony Gordon was soft, sparking the comeback, and Phillips was certainly not the main culprit on a bleak afternoon in the North East.

West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Pre-match, Vladimir Coufal claimed that he had his sights set on breaking his Premier League assist tally in a single campaign against Eddie Howe's side.

He didn't walk the walk, let's say that…

Vladimir Coufal's game in numbers

Coufal has been an excellent signing for West Ham, following Czech countryman Tomas Soucek from Slavia Prague in 2020 for a bargain £5m and since chalking up 144 appearances for the club, registering 20 assists.

The right-back's metrics on the afternoon make for grim reading, however, having been bullied in the duel and wasteful in possession to compound an early foul to give Newcastle the lead, Isak converting the first of two spot-kicks.

His display was so poor that The Evening Standard's Malik Ouzia branded the 31-year-old with a 4/10 match rating, writing of his performance: 'Rash when diving in on Gordon to concede early penalty and sloppy in possession for much of the afternoon.'

With the likes of Ben Johnson waiting in the wings, Coufal – whose 5.6 Sofascore rating was the worst of any player on the day – arguably should be dropped against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, with that Premier League fixture now heightened. It's all on the line.

Phillips may never wear the shirt again if West Ham unleash exciting teen

David Moyes’ January addition has not been up to scratch in east London…

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 20, 2024

Inconsistency has marred West Ham's campaign but this is not the time to wallow in despair. Moyes will berate his troops after a dismal collapse, and so he should, but there is quality enough to forge a successful finish to the season and now the Hammers must rally.

Kohli, Ishant set up India's victory push

The first day-night Test in India threatens to be the shortest completed Test in the country, but Mushfiqur Rahim might stand in the way of that

The Report by Sidharth Monga23-Nov-2019

BCCI

The first day-night Test in India threatens to be the shortest in the country. After two days – 916 legal deliveries – India were just four, possibly three, wickets away from recording their longest winning streak: seven. The quickest it has previously taken to achieve an outright result in India is 1028 balls, against Afghanistan in 2018. With that record still up for grabs on day three at Eden Gardens, the match also seems destined to be the joint-leanest for spinners in India – just one wicket to them so far, matching the Golden Jubilee Test of 1981.It is hard to judge if the conditions were very skewed against the batsmen, because Bangladesh did play quite a few tame shots to get out. Ishant Sharma looked nigh unplayable with his inswing and the odd legcutter, ending the day one wicket short of only his second 10-wicket match haul. He hit Mohammad Mithun with a bouncer, and had that resulted in a concussion, Bangladesh would have had to get Mustafizur Rahman in as a batting-only substitute. Bangladesh still found themselves a player short with Mahmudullah injuring his hamstring trying to complete a quick single. And oh, by the way, Virat Kohli scored his 27th Test century, his 20th as captain, going past Ricky Ponting and behind only Graeme Smith’s 25. Speaking of captains, a former captain, Mushfiqur Rahim, made sure the match went into day three with a counterattacking fifty after he himself was hit on the head. The day began with India 68 in the lead, seven wickets in hand and Kohli primed for yet another inevitable-looking Test hundred. Like a matter of routine, Kohli eased his way to a century despite some turn for Taijul Islam, who had come in as a concussion substitute for Nayeem Hasan. The problem with Bangladesh was they were bowling good balls but not good overs. Kohli was alert enough to keep the good ones out, and take risk-free runs off the ordinary ones. Some of the driving of course was gorgeous.Ajinkya Rahane was unfortunate enough to fall to the odd good ball despite having crossed fifty. Unlike Kohli, Rahane likes to stay back to spin and play a lot of horizontal-bat shots. The kind of delivery that would have beaten Kohli on the forward-defensive took a top edge on the cut. Not that it changed the flow of the game a lot. Nor did the movement with the second new ball. All it did was hasten the end of the Indian innings – declared closed at nine down – to give Bangladesh a possible 44 overs to survive on the second evening. The way Ishant started, it didn’t look like Bangladesh would last the night. In his first over, he toyed with the outside edge of Shadman Islam, moving closer and closer to the stumps and finally trapping him lbw. Captain Mominul Haque then grabbed a pair by managing to somehow edge a half-volley.That brought together batsmen with two of the five worst averages in Test cricket in the last three years: Mithun and Imrul Kayes. Mithun soon suffered a sickening blow with an Ishant bouncer following him after pitching. He continued batting after a concussion test but soon played a limp pull to give Umesh Yadav a wicket. Ishant soon drew the seemingly overdue edge from Kayes to leave Bangladesh at 13 for 4.Dangerous games continued as Rahim received a glancing blow in the head from Yadav. With so many blows to the heads and dropped catches, questions will be, and should be, asked if it had anything to do with the pink ball.Rahim, though, waved his physio off, raising questions over concussion protocols in cricket. The way he continued to bat it didn’t seem he was suffering from one, though. Mahmudullah, too, batted fluently despite struggles against the short ball. Both of them chose to attack, and they had plenty of opportunity to do so with the aggressive fields in place. When they took the innings into the 14th over, Mahmudullah and Rahim had put together Bangladesh’s longest partnership of the match. It didn’t stop there. Boundaries kept flowing. Movement died out, India’s lengths became shorter, and the ball kept skidding across the dewy outfield. Mahmudullah, however, had to retire hurt for 39 off 41. The ease with which the two batted, though, begged the question: why weren’t the side’s two best batsmen batting higher and taking more responsibility, especially in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. Now India were forced to go to spin after only one over of it in the first innings, that too to facilitate a change of ends. R Ashwin immediately produced a chance, but Rahane dropped an easy chance at slip, his fourth off the bowling of Ashwin in this series. Ishant came back to get rid of the reprieved batsman Mehidy Hasan, and just before stumps Yadav ended Taijul’s resistance. India are still on their way to a comfortable win, but Rahim had managed to make them wait for another night.

Newcastle may have sold another Lewis Miley for just £1.5m

In the past few years, English clubs – including Newcastle United – have begun to produce a high-level crop of midfield players. Birmingham City can take credit for the development of perhaps the world’s best player at the moment, Jude Bellingham. The 20-year-old now plays for Real Madrid, having played for Borussia Dortmund in between.

Declan Rice, now an Arsenal player, was brought through by West Ham United, after originally being in Chelsea’s academy, and the likes of Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount were successful products of the same famous Cobham academy, with the former an integral player at the Blues and the latter now at Manchester United.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice

More recently, Kobbie Mainoo is the young midfielder breaking through and becoming one of the top talents in the world. It has been a rapid rise for 18-year-old Mainoo, who made his full debut for England’s senior side just five months after his first Premier League start for Manchester United.

Newcastle youngster Lewis Miley is another exciting up-and-coming midfielder and has already played 17 games in the Premier League before his 18th birthday. Aside from Miley, Newcastle have some talented youngsters coming through in midfield, including 21-year-old Joe White, who returned to St James’ Park in January after his loan spell at Crewe Alexandra ended.

However, the Magpies may have let another young talent in midfield slip through the cracks, and depart the club for a major Premier League rival, where he is now making waves and contributing to first-team success.

Newcastle let a talented teen leave for peanuts

It was August 2021 when exciting talent Bobby Clark left Newcastle to join Premier League rivals Liverpool. According to Lee Ryder of The Chronicle Live, the transfer was swiftly completed by the Reds, who convinced Clark to move to Anfield rather than sign a scholarship with the Magpies.

It will surely disappoint Newcastle fans, who would no doubt have wanted Clark to follow in his father’s footsteps and pull on the famous black and white stripes at St James’ Park. The youngster's father is Toon legend Lee Clark, who made 260 appearances for the club across two spells in both the 1990s and early 2000s.

Liverpool's Bobby Clark.

The fee Liverpool paid for Clark is rumoured to be in the region of £1.5m, and whilst it may seem a lot on a young player, there is no denying his talent. After all, the aforementioned Ryder said he reminded the reporter of a "young Paul Gascoigne."

Sadly for those in the north east, according to Clark’s father, he decided to join the Merseyside club due to the amount of knowledge they already had about him as a footballer, and “because one day they believed he could be a first-team player for Liverpool”.

How Clark and Miley compare

It is fair to say that the opportunities Miley has had this season may have also befallen Clark had the Liverpool man decided to stay at St James’ Park all of those years ago.

Bobby Clark for Liverpool

Miley’s 17 games in the Premier League this term originally came due to an injury crisis, but have now been fully deserved. As Matthew Robson said on Newcastle Fan website The Mag, “No matter who he has been up against, Lewis Miley hasn’t looked out of place”.

Clark’s job is harder. He has to break into a settled Liverpool midfield with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai all ahead of him. However, he has played 14 times for Liverpool so far and scored his first goal against Sparta Prague in the Europa League this season, as well as registering two assists, one in the Europa League and one in the FA Cup.

As a footballer, Miley and Clark are not too dissimilar. They are busy midfielders, of a similar profile, excelling in the final third although are both more than capable of playing in all phases, and are not afraid of getting on the ball and looking to impact the game.

Miley averages 50 touches per 90 minutes this season, as per Fbref, and in comparison, Clark averages 47 touches per 90 minutes in the Europa League, according to Sofascore. This shows impressive maturity and bravery in their game, which is rare in midfielders so young.

The pair look after the ball well when in possession, with Miley averaging a pass accuracy of 84% in the top-flight according to Sofascore, and Clark just slightly worse at 78%, although with a much smaller sample size. They enjoy getting on the ball in deeper areas, pulling the strings and kickstarting attacks, before crashing the box looking to get on the end of crosses.

Lewis Miley for Newcastle United against Paris Saint-Germain.

It will certainly frustrate Newcastle that they failed to keep hold of 19-year-old Clark, who is now beginning to break into Liverpool’s first team and show similar levels of talent to Miley. If things had turned out differently, he could’ve helped Newcastle through their injury crisis this season, rather than becoming a breakout star at Anfield.

Fim do jejum do artilheiro

Wilson evita o empate

Londrina volta melhor e consegue a igualdade

O gol sofrido acordou o Coritiba no 2° tempo.

A bola explodiu no travessão.
