'Apart from Kumara, no one stuck to a plan' – Sri Lanka assistant coach Ratnayake

Pakistan progressed at a run rate of 3.76 through the 90 overs they faced on Saturday, taking firm control of the Karachi Test

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Karachi21-Dec-2019Sri Lanka’s bowlers didn’t bowl tight enough. Aside from Lahiru Kumara, they also failed to build pressure and bowl in partnerships. This was the verdict of assistant coach Rumesh Ratnayake at stumps on the third day, in which Sri Lanka conceded 338 runs and claimed only two wickets.Pakistan progressed at a run rate of 3.76 through the 90 overs they faced on Saturday. In the morning session their run rate had been as high as 4.54. Ratnayake said that although his team expected the surface to become better for batting, they had hoped to keep the rate of scoring in better check.”Each session we had a target – we wanted to keep them to 70 to 80 runs,” he said. “But we couldn’t do that. Some of the plans were very simple – keeping it tight in line with the stumps. Also, keeping it on the right length. Those were not hard plans to adhere to. Some of the guys did it, but some didn’t. Those partnerships didn’t happen when bowling, which I felt was a big miss.”Lahiru Kumara celebrates a wicket•AFP

Kumara, the 22-year-old quick, was the only one to claim wickets on day three, bowling quicker than 145kph at times. In fact, for large portions of the day, no other bowler appeared capable of breaking through. He had also taken four wickets in the first innings, along with left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya, who went wicketless on Saturday.”Apart from Lahiru Kumara, no one else stuck to a plan well enough. They didn’t create those partnerships with him. Our target tomorrow would be to restrict them as much as possible. It’s up to the bowlers – not only Kumara and Embuldeniya – to come into the game and bowl tightly.”Ratnayake did state that the Karachi surface had become substantially flatter than it had been earlier. Both teams had extracted seam movement through the course of the first innings. But lateral movement was not seen on day three, nor was the bounce and carry that had contributed to the bowlers’ effectiveness on days one and two.”There might have been a little bit of moisture. But as time went by it started drying out and the heavy roller was used by Pakistan, because of which it became a placid wicket. Saying that there was a little bit of turn at the end of the day. The fourth day will be interesting.”

James Anderson targets three-day warm-up in bid for first Test fitness

Seamer admits he needs to come through South Africa A game if he has a chance of playing Boxing Day Test

James Anderson says he will have to come through England’s three-day warm-up match against South Africa A on Friday if he has any chance of being fit for the first Test at Centurion on Boxing Day.Anderson, who pulled up with a calf injury four overs into what proved to be his only spell of last summer’s Ashes series, played his first competitive game since a Lancashire Second XI fixture at the end of August earlier this week, taking 1 for 37 in his 11 overs against a Cricket South Africa invitational side at Benoni.ALSO READ: 2021-22 Ashes on Anderson’s radar after technical tweaks during recoveryAnd he admitted that he felt short of match practice, and was some way short of his top speed during his return to action.”It feels like a long time since I played a competitive game,” Anderson said, “so to get back out in the middle and get some overs under my belt is very pleasing. There was a bit of rust there this morning, but that’s to be expected not having played for four or five months.”A six and a five[-over spell] was pretty good, with an eye on potentially playing at the end of the week and getting more overs in then. It was a good start: I felt better second spell, bowled a bit better, and felt like things were coming together. At the same time, I know I’m not up to max speed yet, so that’s something I’ve got to try and get better at by the end of the week.”England were short of three frontline bowlers in Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer and Jack Leach, all of whom went down ill on Wednesday, and as a result, Anderson is expected to get a good opportunity to prove his fitness ahead of the first Test. The match was to have been Anderson’s first first-class game since his injury at Edgbaston this summer, against a strong South Africa A team which features Temba Bavuma, Reeza Hendricks and Theunis de Bruyn. However, the match has been downgraded to a friendly to allow the ill players a chance to recover and still take part.”We’ve got a few men down with illness and that, so it might not be such a difficult team to pick,” Anderson said, “but I’d like to be in that. If I’ve got any chance of being in that first Test, I think I need to play that three-day game.”To be honest, I’m just trying to force my way back into the side – that’s all I’m thinking about. I’m just hopeful that I can get my fitness up to speed [and] be bowling well enough that I can get picked for that first Test. Before the game was downgraded, Anderson suggested that its first-class status would help to replicate the “intensity” of an international game. “It’s really good to have that first-class [game] just before a Test series,” he said. “It’s good to create that intensity that you need, there’s a bit more on it… it means that bit more, so it’s good for us to have that intensity ahead of what is going to be an intense four-Test series.”James Anderson was back in an England shirt•Getty Images

There have been no targets set by the England set-up regarding how many games Anderson can hope to play in the series, and he suggested that the pace-bowling camp he was part of in Potchefstroom has given him the confidence to “hit the ground running”.”It was just [about] getting some more overs in and really trying to build up my rehab,” Anderson said, “build up my confidence as well, and feel like I can step up the gas, bowl with a bit more confidence and freedom. It was really helpful for me – I feel acclimatised now. I felt like I could come into this game and not feel I had to ease my way in, I could just hit the ground running.”I’ve bowled in the nets and I’ve bowled in the middle as well in the last two weeks out here against a couple of our lads, [but] you just can’t recreate that match intensity. I think I was a little bit off the pace in my first six overs, and it felt a lot better in the second spell. I’m sure that going into the next game, if I do play the next three-day game, then spell after spell, that’ll hopefully just keep getting better and better.”England’s seamers struggled in Anderson’s absence in New Zealand, toiling fruitlessly on their way to a 1-0 series defeat. But Anderson suggested that South African pitches should be provide more assistance for their attack.”New Zealand’s always a hard place to go when there’s not much swing, and the pitches are pretty flat there,” he said. “I think here, you get a bit more – both in the wicket and, with the ball, you get a bit more through the air.”It’s still not a huge amount of swing, or for a long period of time, so it’s about being spot on for that period that it does swing for – you’ve got to be right on the money.”

Nottingham Forest’s 8.5/10 ace must start every game after Fulham heroics

Nottingham Forest returned to winning ways last night after a convincing 3-1 victory over Marco Silva's Fulham side at the City Ground.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White all managed to get on the scoresheet, with the Reds picking up three vital points that saw them move three points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone.

A brilliant header from Tosin Adarabioyo gave the visitors hope for a second comeback in four days, but the Reds held on to secure a much-needed win.

Nuno Espírito Santo's side were without a win since the 17th of February after a 2-0 win against David Moyes' West Ham United, but the dominant performance last night has given fans reason to be positive about potential survival.

One player produced a sensational performance, with the talent needing to feature week in and week out before the end of the campaign.

Danilo's stats against Fulham

After being dropped following the 1-0 defeat away at Brighton and Hove Albion a couple of weeks ago, Brazilian midfielder Danilo was given an opportunity to feature from the start against Fulham last night, with the 22-year-old taking his chance with both hands.

The former Palmeiras man played in a box-to-box role alongside academy graduate Ryan Yates, with Danilo excelling at both ends of the pitch throughout the encounter.

During his 90 minutes, the youngster managed 44 touches, which included 19 successful passes – one of which was a beautifully weighted ball into the path of Gibbs-White, who slotted the ball home for the Reds' third goal.

Despite his brilliant display in possession, the Brazilian was just as impressive defensively, winning 100% of his tackles, making one block and five interceptions, as he played a huge part in maintaining Forest's lead in the second half.

Danilo also won 50% of his ground duels that he contested, with the Reds' number 22 making three clearances – a tally only beaten by Murillo, Andrew Omobamidele and Neco Williams.

The midfielder was given a rating of 8.5/10 by Nottingham Post Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson, with the journalist claiming the Brazilian "covered a lot of ground throughout".

Why Danilo is now undroppable

Given his display against Fulham last night, the 22-year-old – who was "everywhere", according to journalist Callum Castel – has surely staked his claim for a regular starting role under Nuno between now and the end of the season.

His ability to quickly transition defence into attack is a huge asset for the club, especially given the counter-attacking playstyle implemented since promotion back to the Premier League in 2022.

Gibbs-White and fellow Brazilian Murillo are undoubtedly two of the first names on the teamsheet given their impressive campaigns in Forest's disappointing season, the latter attracting interest from sides such as Arsenal and Chelsea who are now keen on the defender, an indication as to how impressive he's been since arriving in English football.

Danilo has started in each one of Nuno's four Premier League wins as Forest boss, with the midfielder evidently a key asset to the head coach and deserving of a consistent starting spot over the coming weeks.

Yasir Shah four-for takes dominant Pakistan to innings win

Hat-trick man Naseem Shah doesn’t take the field on day four after feeling pain near his rib cage

The Report by Varun Shetty10-Feb-2020

Pakistan wrapped up a win and added 60 points to their World Test Championship tally in the morning session of the fourth day.Bangladesh were rocked by a Naseem Shah hat-trick on Sunday evening that left them 126 for 6 at stumps. In the very first over of the day, that collapse of 4 for 2 turned into 5 for 6, as Shaheen Afridi swung a full one in at Mominul Haque to trap him in front of middle and off on the flick shot. Mominul’s review showed a bat-pad situation that couldn’t be conclusively overturned and he became one of five wickets across this Test that fell within the first two overs on a day. With little to lose, the other overnight batsman, Liton Das, dug in and looked elegant as ever as he attempted to forge a long alliance with No. 9 Rubel Hossain. For the most part, the eighth-wicket pair looked solid as they batted close to 12 overs. Rubel survived an lbw decision by umpire Nigel Llong as the review found a big inside edge on his attempted forward block against Mohammad Abbas. But it was Abbas who trapped him, in similar fashion, shortly after.Llong had another lbw decision overturned, this time as Liton was struck in front looking to sweep a full ball. This was much like his dismissal in the first innings, when he tried sweeping part-time spinner Haris Sohail and was given out on a review that confirmed the ball had pitched in line. The bowler was Yasir Shah on this occasion, who then got Abu Jayed to top edge a slog sweep to bring the innings to a close. Yasir finished with four wickets – a much-needed confidence booster following a dry patch of form – just like the other Shah, Naseem, who didn’t take the field after feeling pain on the left side of his rib cage shortly after he had taken his hat-trick.Pakistan’s next Test is in April, and will be the second and final one of this staggered series against Bangladesh. At the very least, that means Naseem will have recovery time. They currently sit fourth on the WTC table with 140 points.

3-4-3 coach who has spoken to Mowbray "would love to be Sunderland manager"

A 3-4-3 coach "would love to be Sunderland manager", having admitted that he has previously spoken to Tony Mowbray about the current situation at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland manager latest

The Black Cats have had Mike Dodds in as caretaker manager since the dismissal of Michael Beale earlier in the year, with their season petering out disappointingly. Having looked like genuine Championship playoff contenders at one point, Sunderland have slipped to 13th place in the table, with Dodds averaging just 0.82 points per game in his 11 matches in charge since coming in, winning only twice in that time.

The hunt is now on to find a proper successor to Beale, however, and plenty of names have been thrown into the mix in recent months, as the club look to nail a hugely important decision.

Michael Beale for Sunderland.

Reims manager Will Still has been linked with the Sunderland job numerous times, with the 31-year-old an exciting young boss who has shone in France, but it remains to be seen if he will be the man who comes in. Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has also emerged as an option for the Black Cats, in what would represent an audacious appointment, considering he has only recently been managing in the Premier League.

Now, it appears as though another individual has thrown his name into the hat to take over from Dodds.

3-4-3 manager keen on Sunderland job

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast [via The Sunderland Echo], John O'Shea admitted that he is keen on being Sunderland's next manager at some point, having enjoyed a lengthy stint at the Stadium of Light as a player:

"When you think I was there for six, seven years. I had an amazing time there and it's an amazing club, it really is. We had an amazing time there and yeah, ultimately I would love to be Sunderland manager. It's a tricky one, I spoke to Tony Mowbray when he came into Birmingham about the model they have there with young players."

In truth, O'Shea remains a very inexperienced figure in management, even though he is the Republic of Ireland's current caretaker boss. For that reason, Sunderland hiring him this summer could be a risk, at a time when they need to hire more of a surefire bet.

The Irishman prefers a 3-4-3 formation, suggesting he has a modern way of thinking, in terms of utilising the wing-backs effectively, but his only two games in his current role saw a 1-0 loss to Switzerland and 0-0 draw against Belgium come his way. Neither are particularly bad results, in fairness, but there simply isn't enough evidence to suggest that Sunderland should take a punt on him.

Sunderland now eyeing move to sign former Arsenal gem

He has no weak foot.

ByTom Cunningham Apr 18, 2024

O'Shea has enjoyed plenty of assistant manager roles, including at Birmingham City and Stoke City, but until he is a manager for a sustained period of time, the Black Cats shouldn't consider him a front-runner to come in.
