Legspinner sends selectors a message ahead of first Test with four-wicket haul

Matt Parkinson has a laugh during England’s opening tour match in Sri Lanka•Getty Images
Matt Parkinson did his best to make a statement to England selectors ahead of the first Test in Sri Lanka by claiming four wickets as the visitors held command of their opening warm-up match at Katunayake. At stumps on the second day of the three-day tour match between England and a Sri Lanka Cricket XI, England led by 110 runs, having restricted their opposition to 245 in their first innings on the back of 23-year-old legspinner Parkinson’s 4 for 68.As expected, it was the spinners who came into their own, with Dom Bess adding 3 for 54 with his off-breaks to further dent the Sri Lankans’ reply to England’s first-innings 316.In England’s second innings, Dom Sibley fell for a duck, caught by Lahiru Udara Igalagamage off the bowling of medium pacer Kavishka Anjula on the second ball he faced.ALSO READ: ‘Being written off after one game is a bit harsh’ – ParkinsonParkinson has made his international debut in both limited-overs formats during the English winter, playing two T20Is in New Zealand at the end of last year and, more recently, two ODIs in South Africa. In New Zealand, he drew some praise by taking five wickets across his six overs in the series, but in South Africa he bowled just eight overs and went wicketless, reigniting criticism which has centred on his speed through the air and perceived lack of variation. He has had limited exposure to red-ball cricket. having played just 20 first-class matches. He went wicketless during a two-day tour match in New Zealand and, on England’s tour of South Africa, he bowled 20 overs in a three-day warm-up match which cost 112 runs before being overlooked in favour of Dom Bess for the second Test.”Having not played much red-ball cricket I needed to prove I can take wickets and almost get over the nerves of bowling with these lads,” Parkinson told the Press Association.”There were more nerves in the other two tours. I’m still very raw with the red-ball and I think people sometimes forget that spinners develop later. Being picked on three Test tours, the expectations are raised, but I’ve still only played 20 first-class games so I’m still very new to red-ball cricket.”I found it difficult to bowl spin in New Zealand and South Africa but hopefully the wickets in Galle and Colombo will be raggers.”On Sunday, Parkinson’s first two wickets came from successive balls either side of the lunch break when Lahiru Milantha chipped to extra cover and Milinda Siriwardana was caught by Saqib Mahmood on the first delivery of the afternoon session.Parkinson added two more in the evening, his third held by Sam Curran at mid-wicket and his fourth coming thanks to a sharp catch by Ben Foakes, who split wicketkeeping duties with Test regular Jos Buttler.”There haven’t been many days yet in a white shirt but to get four wickets after the way the warm-up games went for me in New Zealand and South Africa was very pleasing,” Parkinson said.”I hope I’m becoming a better bowler and I can use what I’ve learnt. I was in South Africa for two months and a bit, so you’d be wrong not to try to get the most out of the trip. Hopefully I’ve done that.”Chris Woakes claimed two wickets and saw two catches dropped by Joe Root at slip, while Mahmood found some good speed in claiming one wicket.Zak Crawley and Joe Denly resume on 27 and 11 respectively with England 39 for 1 going into the last day. The first Test starts in Galle on March 19.
Everton will be looking to make it four Premier League wins in a row when they travel to face Luton Town at Kenilworth Road this evening.
Sean Dyche's side claimed a third successive top-flight victory last time out, beating fellow strugglers Brentford at Goodison Park, following on from the impressive 2-0 win over local rivals Liverpool.
A second goal in three matches for midfielder Idrissa Gueye secured a vital 1-0 win for the Toffees, as Dyche's side also kept their third clean sheet in as many games.
The Toffees secured their top-flight safety last weekend, extending their ever-present Premier League status for at least another season despite receiving a total of eight points deducted this campaign.
Despite the fantastic team display against Thomas Frank's side six days ago, Dyche should be looking to drop one player to give his side the best opportunity of extending their current winning run.
Why Youssef Chermiti could make way vs Luton
Although he made his first Premier League start in the win against Brentford last weekend, striker Youssef Chermiti could be in danger of dropping back to the bench ahead of the meeting with Rob Edwards' side tonight.
The youngster featured for 89 minutes during the victory, only managing to achieve 33 touches – the fewest of any Everton player who started the game.
The Portuguese forward also only managed to complete 15 passes, an average of one every 16 minutes, at a completion rate of just 68%.
Although he ran the channels well, Chermiti failed to impose himself as the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Beto would've, winning just five duels during his time on the pitch, but also losing 11.
It's clear he tried to make a positive impact on the encounter, but his eagerness to score saw the striker stray offside three times and gifting possession away ten times.
Liverpool Echo journalist Chris Beesley awarded the 19-year-old a 6/10 rating, the lowest in the starting lineup, with Dyche needing to unleash another forward against the Hatters.
The man to replace Chermiti against Luton Town
Although he's struggled with injuries again this season, striker Calvert-Lewin, who was dubbed "phenomenal" by former boss Carlo Ancelotti, has been a solid source of goals for the Toffees once again, with his tally of six in the Premier League the joint-most at the club, alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure.
He missed the win over Brentford with a knock, but in his pre-match press conference yesterday, Dyche confirmed that the striker was back in training and in contention for a return tonight.
His latest setback came at an awful time for the 27-year-old, who had managed to find the back of the net in three of his last four outings, including against Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
With Luton's pitch being one of the narrowest in England's top flight, the Toffees may resort to playing the occasional long ball tonight, with Calvert-Lewin's height and aerial ability potentially playing a huge part tonight.
He's averaged 6.2 aerials won per 90 this season, as per FBref, with the striker potentially being the difference in what could be a tight and cagey affair as Luton battle for Premier League survival.

Celtic are now readying an offer to sign a “stunning” player in a permanent Parkhead transfer.
Celtic transfer rumours
The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers are in for a busy end to the season on the pitch, looking to lift both the Scottish Premiership title and win the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park, both ahead of rivals Rangers.
However, away from the pitch, preparations appear to be underway ahead of the summer transfer window, with Celtic looking to complete a number of signings.
According to reports earlier this year, Celtic Park chiefs want to at last sign a new goalkeeper, winger and striker, with a replacement for the retiring Joe Hart at the top of the agenda.
Celtic planning to accept offer for "tremendous" ace Rodgers doesn't want
His time with the Scottish giants could be rapidly drawing to a close.
ByBen Browning May 8, 2024
Rodgers has also previously admitted that the club could be “braver” with their additions: “I would go with supporters thinking we could maybe be a little bit braver in terms of bringing in another level of player.
"But that’s up to me to try and fix that over the course of my time here. You look at the strategy here and you have to be careful because in some ways it has worked. You bring in players for a minimal fee and then they go out and make the club a lot of money.
“What I want to hopefully balance in my time here is that we can still do that, because it is an important part of the modern game. But we also want to be brave enough to hang our hat on a ready-made player.”
One player who appears to be a permanent target is current loanee Adam Idah, with the striker set to return to Norwich City at the end of the current campaign.
However, the Republic of Ireland international is thought to be open to making his stay at Celtic a permanent one, and it looks as if the Hoops feel the same.
Adam Idah to Celtic transfer update
According to Football Insider in the last 48 hours, Celtic are now ready to submit a permanent bid for Idah, with the Canaries valuing the striker at £5m.
The report doesn’t say if the Hoops are willing to match that price tag, but it appears as if Norwich will receive an official offer from Celtic for the forward.
Adam Idah
The 23-year-old, on £23,000-a-week at Carrow Road, was called "absolutely stunning” by Chris Sutton following a goal against Motherwell, and in total, Idah has scored seven times and provided two assists in 15 Celtic appearances.
Should a permanent deal go through, it will be one that may delight Rodgers, who hailed the forward back in February.

South Africa’s women and A-team tours to the West Indies, scheduled to begin at the end of May and in mid-June respectively, have been postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. CSA and CWI agreed to reschedule dates for the two series but will continue to discuss the possibility of the men’s two-Test and five-T20 series set to take place in July-August.This is the second series South Africa’s women have had to forego after their home series against Australia, which was due to take place in March, was among the first international series to be postponed. The team has already qualified for next year’s Women’s World Cup and with the ICC’s announcement that the World Cup Qualifiers – due to take place in Sri Lanka between July 3-19 – will also be postponed, CSA and CWI agreed that the series between the two countries will not take place at the moment.Similarly, the A-team tour, which was due to act as an advance party for the senior men’s tour, has fallen victim to the uncertainty surrounding international travel and potential quarantine requirements. South Africa’s borders remain closed as the country approaches seven weeks under lockdown, with no indication of when airports may be allowed to open to the public yet. However, with the senior men’s tour only scheduled to start in mid-July, the two boards remain hopeful at least some cricket between their countries can be played.”The health and safety of the players and coaching staff is of paramount importance to both CWI and CSA and with the current Covid-19 travel restrictions, it is impossible for us to consider both tours taking place as we had originally planned,” Johnny Grave, CWI CEO, said. “We are continuing our discussions with CSA on the feasibility of hosting the men’s tour later this summer and will have further discussions in due course on new dates for the women’s and A-team tours.”ALSO READ: South Africa allrounder Solo Nqweni tests positive for coronavirusThe feasibility of the men’s tour will depend on several factors including whether the teams have enough time to train for an international series. CSA’s director of cricket Graeme Smith said South Africa would need a minimum of six weeks to prepare, which would mean a decision would have to be taken by the first week in June. At the same time, CWI is also involved in discussions with the ECB about the possibility of playing three Tests in the UK in July which may push back South Africa’s visit to the Caribbean.Although South Africa are keen to get on the park, CSA emphasised that health would come first. “It is a frustrating state of affairs in which cricket finds itself around the world, but there are more important issues that have to be confronted and the wellbeing of our players and support staff must always come first,” Jacques Faul, CSA acting CEO, said.”Both our men’s and women’s national teams are keen to get back on the playing field as soon as possible. They want to build on their recent good results with the men achieving a 3-0 victory over Australia and our women coming so close to reaching the Women’s T20 World Cup final.”South Africa’s players have not been able to train since March 26, when the country went into a strict lockdown, under which outdoor exercise was prohibited. Since May 1, South Africans can exercise outside between 6am and 9am but no group activity is allowed, which has resulted in CSA pushing back its planned winter training camps.

Star allrounder plays down injury concerns after another showstopping performance
ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jul-2020Ben Stokes has moved to ease injury concerns after he pulled up in discomfort while bowling late in England’s second-Test victory, in which he played a starring role.Stokes stopped bowling after four deliveries of his 15th over in West Indies’ second innings, having claimed the wickets of key batsman Jermaine Blackwood and tailender Alzarri Joseph, the latter putting England within one wicket of victory.”I’m fine,” Stokes told Sky Sports after England had won the match by 113 runs to level the series 1-1. “Just the body started to get quite stiff. I said to Broady, ‘the body’s starting to stiffen up, what do you reckon?’ and he said, ‘just stop’.ALSO READ: England surge to victory as Stokes turns on style again”Three or four years ago against Pakistan I had the same thing and I ended up blowing my calf so I didn’t want to take that risk.”Despite bowling an 11-over spell in West Indies’ second innings, on the final day of a Test in which he had also scored a patient century and bludgeoned a fifty, Stokes rejected suggestions too much had been asked of him with the ball.”Absolutely not,” Stokes said. “Obviously, I’ll give everything to the team, whatever is asked of me. We sort of found a method within our attack to change things up when things are looking a bit dry to go to that type of bowling or being aggressive in setting the field.”Not only does it give us a wicket-taking option. It also dries it up because we feel the batsmen don’t have really anywhere to go. So, you know, once you get past that five-, six-over mark you sort of feel like you’re fresh as anything you keep going in. But I’ll always do whatever’s asked of me.”Having scored 176 from 356 balls in England’s first innings, then 78 from 57 in the second, Stokes also broke up key partnerships with the wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite in the fist innings and then Blackwood’s in the second.Ben Stokes walks off with a stump after his Man of the Match performance•Getty Images
Asked about his contrasting performances with the bat, he couldn’t pick a favourite, but he took pride in batting long for his century while clearly enjoying captain Joe Root’s intent in sending him to open for the first time in a Test alongside fellow big-hitter Jos Buttler as England chased quick second-innings runs, a decision he said came after “a few conversations”.”Obviously Joe has the final call and that’s what he decided to go with, so it was a real positive move, I thought,” Stokes said. “It’s no good for us walk away with this game with a draw and so Joe made a real positive effort to get me get me and Jos up the order.”Looking at the scoreboard seeing 300 balls bowled feels a bit weird,” he added of his first innings, “but it had to be done.”Root, also speaking to Sky Sports, said Stokes’ starring role in the match was not the least bit surprising.”It doesn’t surprise me, you watch how he goes about his business, whether it be in practice his fitness, everything,” Root said. “He leads the way in many, many respects and he seems to want to keep getting better and better.”And we’re seeing those results out in the field as well, which is great for a lot of the younger guys coming through to see that you’ve got to put the hard yards in. He certainly does that and, you know, we’re starting to see that feed into the rest of the team, which is a great place to be.”
