Luiz Gomes: 'Palmeiras, Flamengo, Bragantino e Athletico são o novo futebol do Brasil'

Man Utd want £88m "superstar" who’s a bigger talent than Yoro

Manchester United mean business this summer. INEOS have wasted no time in bolstering Erik ten Hag's first team, tying up deals for dynamic forward Joshua Zirkzee and LOSC Lille's Leny Yoro.

Having fallen flat in the Premier League last season, United's bleak eighth-place finish was rectified one week later when Manchester City were defeated in the FA Cup final.

The thing is, Man United weren't good enough last year, but Ten Hag still emerged with his second piece of silverware in as many seasons; his advent brought the end of a six-year trophy drought.

Erik ten Hag with the FA Cup trophy.

Now, it's time to launch an offensive on those at the forefront of the top flight, narrowing the 31-point gulf from champions Manchester City. Dealings thus far have spoken of a step in the right direction, but the defence needs more attention, and that is where the focus lies.

Man Utd transfer news

Yoro, regarded as one of the most talented young defenders in the world, joined United in a deal rising to £59m after a high-profile battle for his signature.

Leny Yoro for Man Utd.

Real Madrid, his favoured destination, were unwilling to pay the demanded figure, while other outfits including Liverpool had previously withdrawn from the race. United have landed an 18-year-old with the skillset tailored to long-term dominance at the apex of the European game.

Now, Sir Jim Ratcliffe hopes to reinforce United's backline once more, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs De Ligt two high-profile targets but both seemingly more unlikely by the day to join this summer.

SL Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva

As such, Thursday's edition of Portuguese newspaper O Jogo – via Sport Witness – suggests that Benfica's Antonio Silva could be the next to join the ranks, though his €100m (£88m) release clause might prove to be a sticking point.

The Old Trafford side have turned their attention to the 20-year-old after having troubles with other targets, and, crucially, INEOS are 'convinced' that they can negotiate a more affordable figure.

Antonio Silva's impressive rise

Barely into his professional career, Silva has accomplished much across his first two campaigns as a senior member of Benfica's senior set-up. Across this span, he has amassed 94 appearances and has scored seven goals, winning the 2022/23 Liga Portugal title.

His exploits in his homeland earned him a place in Roberto Martinez's Euro 2024 squad, and while the young defender endured a performance to be forgotten as Georgia defeated his nation in a final group stage clash – a dead-rubber match for already-qualified and much-changed Portugal – his skillset is certainly not negated.

Analyst Ben Mattinson has described him as "one of Benfica's best prospects", a "mature leader" with the "raw ability to be a top [centre-back]", and United could score a real hit in bringing him to a defensive line starting to boast a good sense of balance and depth.

Lisandro Martinez is one of the Premier League's best defenders, with Luke Shaw describing him as an "absolute monster" after his stunning debut season; Harry Maguire is an experienced leader in the rear; Jonny Evans, 36, belied his twilit years by producing solid displays in an injury-plagued defence last year.

With Victor Lindelof also on the books and Yoro recently welcomed, United might just find that they have the tools to restore their defence to its one-time vigour.

Benfica defender Antonio Silva.

After all, Yoro and Silva could prove to be one of football's elite partnerships down the line, with the latter perhaps even boasting the quality to be the cream of the crop at the Theatre of Dreams.

Why Silva could be a "superstar"

It's October 2022, and Benfica have knocked Juventus out of the Champions League in the group phase after an extraordinary 4-3 victory at the Estádio da Luz. Silva, 18, opened his account after 17 minutes and issued a knee-sliding salute. He was here.

It was the gusto and guile of a player confident in their prodigious ability and future success at the very highest level, and it's quite likely that Old Trafford bosses were excited having sent scouts to watch the teenager earlier that month.

A hard-tackling and athletically robust centre-half, Silva is shaping up to be the complete package, actually ranking among the top 2% of defenders in Portugal last season for pass completion, the top 14% for progressive passes, the top 16% for successful take-ons and the top 8% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

He differs from the expertly languid style of Yoro, and that could mark a fine sense of contrast in Ten Hag's unit over the years to come. Yoro's intelligence, spatial awareness, and reading of the game suggest that he has the trappings of a future world-class phenomenon.

As the comparison table above highlights, both players, scarcely into their respective senior careers, produced an excellent level of performance last year, though Silva showed himself to be more effective and active in the duel and more mobile in his ground covering.

Pundit Jamie Carragher has even gone as far as to say that Silva is "going to be a superstar", in awe at the player's Herculean effort against Juventus almost two years ago.

The season ahead will prove to be a big one for the Portuguese talent, but with such an almighty set of qualities, he could just find himself completing Man United's backline and rising to the No. 1 spot at a club that threatens to return to its one-time imperiousness at the summit of Europe.

After slow start, Chepauk pitch likely to take fast turn in second Test

Spinners likely to get help from the pitch as early as the first day

Nagraj Gollapudi11-Feb-2021

The pitch for the second India vs England Test in Chennai•BCCI

After toiling on a slow and flat surface in the first Test, Indian spinners are likely to get more purchase in the second Test, starting on Saturday, as the pitch is expected to take turn as early as the first day.The key difference between the two surfaces is the nature of the soil. The pitch for the first Test comprised purely of red soil and it did not break until late in the match. However, the surface for the second Test will have a base comprising red soil and a top layer comprising black cotton soil. It is understood that if the conditions are dry, the top layer, primarily made of black clay, will start to disintegrate faster. The red soil in Chennai is different from the Mumbai variant. The Mumbai one stays true through the match, while in Chennai, it usually crumbles quickly if underprepared. However, the pitch was well-bound ahead of the first Test to ensure the match stretched to the fifth day.On the eve of the first Test, Chepauk head groundsman V Ramesh Kumar had told ESPNcricinfo that he would make a surface with an “English look”, to suit all bowlers. But by the time of the toss, Chepauk pitch had been shorn of any grass. Consequently, the pitch was slow. The new ball lost its shine quickly and the leather softened early too, thus hurting India’s fast-bowling duo Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma. Sharma highlighted the bland nature of the pitch across the opening two days, by saying it resembled a “road”.Even R Ashwin, India’s premier spinner, who is closing in on 400 Test wickets, struggled to find purchase from the surface over the first two days. England took advantage of the bald, hard, flat surface as Joe Root made a double-century and England amassed 578 in the first innings. The one factor in favour of the bowlers still was the bounce, which remained consistent mostly throughout the five days. Gradually, the surface became abrasive and it helped both spinners and fast bowlers, the latter making an impact with the reverse swing as James Anderson showed in a memorable spell on the fifth morning. What India might have a desired in the first Test – a quick turner where they can dominate England batsmen – they are likely to get this weekend.Usually, groundsmen stop watering the pitch two days before the Test match to allow the moisture to be retained. When England arrived for training on Thursday morning, the pitch was left uncovered. Later, it was covered with the hessian cloth to protect against the high temperature, which is in the mid-30-degree Celsius.Another significant difference in the second Test could be the low bounce, as a consequence of the dry pitch. It remains to be seen how much grass is left on Saturday morning. The turning nature of the surface is likely to influence the final XI for India, who face difficult questions regarding their second line of spinners to assist Ashwin. India captain Virat Kohli has already spoken about the lack of contribution from Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar in the first Test.Axar Patel is likely to make his Test debut having recovered from the knee injury he picked on the eve of the first Test. In case Patel plays, the Indian team management will need to figure out whether they go with Sundar or Kuldeep Yadav as the third spinner.

Romano: Aston Villa submit "formal bid" to sign new attacking gem for Emery

Still not concluded with their summer business, Aston Villa have reportedly sent a "formal bid" to sign a future star for Unai Emery in an attempt to beat Premier League rivals to his signature.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have been the busiest side in the Premier League on the incoming front, signing as many as eight fresh faces, with Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen the standouts among the arrivals. With the new campaign set to get underway in just a couple of weeks, which will see Villa square off against West Ham United, Emery's side will be prepared to go in pursuit of Champions League football for a second season running.

Aston Villa could move for £300,000-per-week midfielder amid Felix noise

The Villans are “showing ambition”.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 3, 2024

Even with the opening day approaching, Villa could yet welcome further reinforcements late on in the transfer window, having recently been linked to the likes of Joe Gomez. The versatile Liverpool defender would cap off an excellent summer window and hand those in the Midlands a player who has won everything that there is to win in English football.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Whilst the England international may steal the headlines, however, Emery could first welcome a possible star in the making. According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa have sent a "formal bid" to sign Mason Cotcher this summer. The 17-year-old striker is already training with Villa's youth team and impressing, as they look to beat other Premier League clubs to his signature.

The forward has been a free agent since leaving Sunderland last summer, but now looks set to get his next move and a big one at that in the form of Aston Villa.

Cotcher needs Aston Villa move

It's been a strange period for Cotcher since leaving Sunderland, having surprisingly remained without a club last season. Now, however, he must ensure that he takes hold of his Villa opportunity with both hands. At 17 years old, the forward has the chance to eventually feature alongside the likes of Ollie Watkins and with Jhon Duran's future still in doubt, there could yet be an opening within Emery's attacking options. Cotcher is certainly catching the eye on trial too.

The teenager could be picking the perfect time to earn such a move. Villa's stock has rarely been higher in the Premier League era following their Champions League qualification and the flurry of fresh faces that have come through the door this summer.

Perhaps finally finding his next club, Cotcher must shake off any rust and hit the ground running in Villa's academy set up in pursuit of an eventual opportunity in and around Emery's side. The pathway is certainly there to take advantage of at Villa Park, as proved by the likes of Jacob Ramsey.

Big picture After blowing away Bangladesh in the first ODI in Dunedin, New Zealand can press forward to pick up the series win in Christchurch. It is the first men’s day-night match at the Hagley Oval, which has often presented a rock-hard pitch that has traditionally aided fast bowling and confident strokeplay.New Zealand were superior to Bangladesh in almost every area in Dunedin. Trent Boult led a superb opening spell, with Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson and Jimmy Neesham providing timely breakthroughs throughout the innings. It wasn’t all doom and gloom from the visitors, though. Tamim Iqbal played some shots that reminded of his ability to fight back in the most difficult of circumstances, and the likes of Liton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah also provided glimpses of their ability. With the ball, Taskin Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan bowled with a mix of attack and control that could come in handy if they are defending a bigger total.Certainly, Bangladesh have to bat big to have any chance of leveling the series in Christchurch. For that, a lot will depend on how well Iqbal and Das tackle the new ball, before the likes of Rahim and Mahmudullah take them deeper into the game. From a bowling perspective too, Mustafizur Rahman has to act as the senior bowler, by bowling a lethal spell with the new ball.Otherwise, we could be in for another quick finish.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)New Zealand WLWWWBangladesh LWWWWIn the spotlight If Trent Boult has another couple of spells where he makes the new ball hoop around as madly as he did in Dunedin, we might have a short ODI series in our hands. The four-wicket haul was just reward for his immaculate lengths, but more important was how that pushed Bangladesh into a defensive mindset for the rest of their innings. At the start of 2020, Liton Das had vowed to become a tighter batsman but in his last four ODIs, he has scored only 55 runs. He once again got out to a soft dismissal in Dunedin, after working quite hard for almost an hour against a quality pace attack. Bangladesh could really do with some runs at the top from Das if they are to level the series.Team newsNew Zealand are unlikely to break their winning combination after Ross Taylor was ruled out of the second ODI too, due to an injured hamstring.New Zealand (probable): 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Henry Nicholls, 3 Devon Conway, 4 Will Young, 5 Tom Latham (capt & wk), 6 James Neesham, 7 Daryl Mitchell, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Kyle Jamieson, 10 Matt Henry, 11 Trent BoultMohammad Saifuddin could replace Hasan Mahmud, but it seems the rest of the line-up may survive any chop as Bangladesh look to bat deep and have at least six bowling options.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal (capt), 2 Liton Das, 3 Soumya Sarkar, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk) 5 Mohammad Mithun, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mehidy Hasan Miraz 8 Mahedi Hasan, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Hasan MahmudPitch and conditionsNew Zealand and Bangladesh can look to two previous first-innings scores of 289 for 7 (Northern Districts) and 178 all out (New Zealand Women) in day-night matches at the Hagley Oval, with both teams losing. The weather is expected to be a nice and dry 18 degrees celsius in Christchurch.Stats and trivia New Zealand have lost only one out of the ten ODIs that they have played at the Hagley Oval.
Bangladesh were bowled out for a total below 150 for the first time since September 2018 in Dunedin.Quotes”We played really well in the first game. It is always nice to start with the intensity in our bowling performance. We really made a statement with the way we started with the bat. We hope to continue that but also expect Bangladesh will bounce back considerably.” – New Zealand coach Gary Stead.”We just never got any momentum because we kept losing wickets (in the first ODI). A lot of soft dismissals as well, let’s be honest. We’re hoping the batters learned from that with the bouncing ball.” – Bangladesh fast-bowling coach Ottis Gibson.

£68m release clause: Aston Villa want "superstar" Joao Felix upgrade

Aston Villa have been busy this summer, strengthening across the park after defying the odds to qualify for the Champions League with a top-four Premier League finish last season.

Business is still expected throughout the final fortnight of the window, and while Joao Felix is coveted as the "game-changer" signing for Unai Emery's troops – as per The Telegraph – Chelsea are looking to sign the Atletico Madrid forward.

As such, alternatives must be targeted…

Aston Villa transfer news

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo – via Sport Witness – Aston Villa are interested in signing Pedro Goncalves from Sporting Lisbon, with Emery insisting upon completing the deal before the window shuts.

Pedro Goncalves of Sporting CP

Ruben Amorim is desperate to keep the creative midfielder on the books, however, and is urging the Liga Portugal champions to reject any offers beneath his €80m (£68m) release clause.

How Goncalves compares to Joao Felix

Villa have done their homework on Felix, who has failed to prove himself a high-scoring player across his years of action after signing for Atletico Madrid from SL Benfica for £113m in 2019.

Barcelona's Joao Felix

The Portugal international scored ten goals and added six assists across all competitions last season, on loan at Barcelona, and while he impressed – Xavi called him the "difference-maker" at one point – the 24-year-old has not joined Camp Nou on a permanent given Barca's worrisome financial situation.

He'd be a fantastic addition to the Villans unit but it does look like Chelsea will complete the signing; the player's cohort are confident and eager.

No matter, Goncalves could actually prove to be a better signing anyway. His positional flexibility could see him operate across a number of roles this term, while his playmaking quality has even led him to be hailed as "the new Bruno Fernandes" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

He is indeed performing as Fernandes' successor at Sporting, and doing so with aplomb. As per FBref, he ranks among the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers across divisions similar to the Portuguese top flight over the past year for goals scored and the top 2% for assists per 90.

Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Goncalves

It makes a telling comment on his prolificness, something that could translate clearly to life in the Premier League, bolstered by a healthy mix of talent across every area of the Villa Park pitch.

Last season, as per Sofascore, the Portugal international, aged 26, posted 11 goals and 12 assists across 32 league appearances, creating 18 big chances and averaging two key passes and 1.5 tackles per game.

Not just a playmaker, Goncalves is also capable of chipping in readily with defensive work, with this complete skillset even leading journalist Jack Collins to laud him as a "superstar".

Felix is an eminently talented player, a capable forward with a dynamic outlook, but he ebbs and flows and might not bring the same kind of attacking success. Indeed, he's yet to bag more than eight goals in a single league campaign (in one of Europe's top five leagues).

Aston Villa have been busy this summer, yes, but the Champions League have opened up a world of opportunity and now is the time to complete a heady summer of spending with one last lucrative flourish.

O jogo
LONDRINA COMEÇA O JOGO CARIMBANDO A TRAVE

SEGUNDO TEMPO
OPERÁRIO-PR QUASE MARCA NO COMECINHO

LONDRINA CARIMBA A TRAVE NOVAMENTE
