'There's a bit of insecurity batting in foreign conditions' – Russell Domingo

Bangladesh coach explains his side’s decision to bowl first, a call which came as a “surprise” to the home camp

Bangladesh’s decision to bowl in Durban was prompted by their hesitancy towards batting first in foreign conditions, according to coach Russell Domingo. They have won all their tosses in Test cricket in South Africa, largely deciding to put the hosts in, but doing so today was still a “surprise” for the home camp as per debutant Ryan Rickelton.”I think there’s a bit of insecurity batting in foreign conditions,” Domingo said after play. “There’s a lot of young players coming up – [Mahmudul Hasan] Joy, Shadman [Islam] and [Najmul Hossain] Shanto are playing their first Test here. We need to develop the self-belief to go out there to front up on tough wickets. It is something that we have tried to address as a coaching team and senior players. [But] there were merits to [both] bowling and batting first.Related

Sightscreen issue delays start of Kingsmead Test by 35 minutes

“Over the last ten years, it is 58-42 per cent in favour of batting first in Durban, so there’s not too much in it. There was a little bit of cloud cover today [which would have helped the pace bowlers early on] but that half an hour delay gave the clouds the time to burn off. It didn’t help us.”Rickelton however felt it was more important to think about how the pitch would behave in the latter half of the Test; usually, the Kingsmead pitch helps spinners.”I was personally quite surprised [when Bangladesh chose to bowl],” Rickelton said. “In Durban we usually bat first. The wicket takes turn as it wears on. We would have batted first if we won the toss.”A lot of people are saying they haven’t seen this type of pitch in Durban [before], maybe that’s what pushed them to bowl first. They were probably trying to get the most out of it with their three seamers. But we were happy to bat.”Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee duly laid a platform for South Africa with a century stand, despite the interruptions of the first half hour. There were freebies on offer, and the pair took full toll, adding 95 in the first session. Rickelton said that the 113-run opening stand set up South Africa nicely.”Dean says it a lot and it is true: we start quite slowly as a cricketing group. He was determined to show that that wasn’t going to be the case again. They were irritated with the delay up front. I think it made them more determined.”Hats off to them. Hundred opening stand in any format of the game is a great base to build off. They played very well. They put the bad ball away. They dug it out. They definitely set us up for the rest of the game.”Bangladesh did fight back with three wickets in the middle session, and got Rickelton in the last session to give the day, despite their errors with the ball, a more in-the-balance look. Like Rickelton, Domingo felt the delay at the start had an impact.”The first half an hour break didn’t do any team any favours. I think there’s a little bit of a difference between a 10am and 10.30am start. We didn’t start well too. We bowled pretty average in the first session.”But then came back superbly well after lunch. I suppose it is an even day at the moment. They only got 230 [233]. If we can nip out two in the morning, it puts us in a good position.”Domingo praised Mehidy Hasan Miraz who was Bangladesh’s MVP on the day, having bowled 26 overs for figures of 1 for 57 and getting Keegan Petersen run out with a brilliant dive-pick-up-and-throw from point.”It was one of the best run-outs I have seen. He has been an amazing cricketer for us with the bat and ball, and in the field,” Domingo said. “He has taken some good catches. He has great energy and attitude. It was a special run-out from a guy who is really confident in his game at the moment.”Rickelton meanwhile rued missing out on a big knock in his first innings as a Test cricketer. He got off the mark with a reverse-swept four, something that offered a glimpse of his abilities, but he fell to Ebadot Hossain for 21.”I was planting my front foot quite early. I wasn’t playing off the back foot just yet, so I took a risk,” he said, explaining why he went for that reverse sweep. “It isn’t the riskiest shot for me. I said that things aren’t going to look in my favour if I am nought off 10 or 15 balls. So I whipped it out, luckily it worked. It got me away.”I am really sad that I couldn’t manage to get through to the end of the day, but it was a nice start for me. Hopefully I can take some momentum from this.”

A provável escalação para a partida é:Ivan, João Pedro, João Victor, Raul Gustavo e Fábio Santos (Reginaldo); Cantillo, Roni e Giuliano; Adson, Mantuan e Róger Guedes.

Kuhn 2.0: Celtic lining up move for star with "incredible potential"

Celtic have been in fantastic form so far this season and have an opportunity to win their first piece of silverware with a League Cup final clash at Hampden Park on Sunday.

The Hoops are set to face off against Glasgow rivals Rangers in the final and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to lift the trophy for the first time since his return to the club last year.

His side were knocked out by Kilmarnock in August of 2023 and Philippe Clement went on to win the competition, beating Aberdeen in the final, as Rangers boss.

Rodgers now has a chance to put things right and secure the trophy this time around, and his team’s domestic form so far this season suggests that he has a good chance of doing so.

Celtic have won 14 and drawn one of their opening 15 matches in the Scottish Premiership, and have already beaten Rangers 3-0 at Parkhead in the division.

The Hoops have also only lost one of their six matches in the Champions League so far this season, which shows that they have been strong across all competitions.

Despite their fantastic form domestically and in Europe, Celtic are still, reportedly, active ahead of the January transfer window that is set to open for business next month.

Celtic interested in Ajax youngster

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, as relayed by Sport Witness, Celtic are one of a number of clubs lining up a swoop for Ajax central midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic ahead of the second half of the season, as Rodgers looks to bolster his options in the middle of the park.

The report claims that Greek giants PAOK and Serie A teams Fiorentina and Lazio are also keen on snapping up a deal for the 21-year-old talent next month, which shows that there is plenty of competition for his services.

It states that the former Roma gem turned down a move to English Championship team Coventry City in the summer transfer window, which frustrated Ajax and has led to restricted minutes this season so far.

The outlet adds that Tahirovic is now keen to move on from the Dutch giants and is looking to seal an exit from the Eredivise side when the January transfer window opens for business, although there is no mention of how much Ajax would demand in order to sell him.

However, it reveals that the Bosnia international, who recently changed agents, is hoping to secure a move back to Italy to play in the Serie A, which means that the Hoops will need to convince him to abandon that dream to come and play in Scotland.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Rodgers could repeat the masterclass he played with Nicolas Kuhn by beating the likes of PAOK, Lazio, and Fiorentina to his signature next month.

Celtic's Nicolas Kuhn masterclass

The Hoops swooped in to sign the German forward from Austrian side Rapid Vienna for a reported fee of £3m, shortly after his 24th birthday in January at the start of this year.

Kuhn had played for RB Leipzig, Ajax, and Bayern Munich at youth level before, as he put it, taking a step back in order to take two steps forward by moving to Austria.

The left-footed winger produced seven goals and ten assists in 51 matches in all competitions for Rapid Vienna, including two goals in 16 league outings during the first half of last season.

Kuhn was then snapped up by Celtic in January and was given time to settle into life in Glasgow, with just two goals and two assists in 14 matches during the second half of the Premiership campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the German ace has already produced three more goals and four more assists in one fewer appearance in the league this season, which shows how much he has thrived since having a few months to adapt to the league.

Rodgers bringing Kuhn in during the January window meant that he could have that settling in period and the forward is now thriving, with 11 goals and 11 assists in all competitions this term, as a result of that.

The manager could now find his next version of the ex-Bayern Munich youngster by bringing Tahirovic in to follow a similar path at Parkhead next year.

Why Celtic should sign Benjamin Tahirovic

At the age of 21, Celtic would be signing a young player with potential to improve and he could benefit from going through the same experience that Kuhn had, by playing a bit-part role in the second half of the season to adjust to the country and league.

Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn.

That could, then, allow him to hit the ground running with a pre-season under his belt when the 2025/26 campaign rolls around, as he would already be used to the Premiership, Rodgers’ tactics, and his teammates.

During his time at Roma, Jose Mourinho claimed that the youngster had “incredible potential”. This speaks to the kind of talent he has as the Portuguese manager has worked with some great players, including the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso, and Eden Hazard, among many, many, others.

The 21-year-old gem has only played once in the Eredivisie this season but his form last term suggests that the quality is there for him to be a promising signing for Celtic.

As you can see in the table above, Tahirovic, who was 20 for most of the campaign, was a regular for Ajax in the Dutch top-flight and showcased his quality as a box-to-box midfielder.

He was reliable with the ball at his feet with a pass accuracy of 89%, which placed him within the top 4% of midfielders in the division, which suggests that the youngster is suited to playing in a dominant Celtic team, that requires midfielders to be comfortable in possession.

Tahirovic has the potential to combine fantastic passing with creativity and a presence defensively, which could make him a brilliant all-round midfielder if he can develop and gain consistency in his performances.

Moura's treble, Chelsea heartbreaker: Ranking the 10 best last-minute goals

Few things beat a dramatic stoppage-time goal in football, but which one ranks as the best in the history of the game?

From gripping Champions League nights, to dramatic Playoff ties, so many crucial fixtures have been decided right at the death. Is there anything sweeter than a goal in ‘Fergie time’?

It’s got us thinking about the greatest late goals throughout history, so here are our choices for the top 10…

10 Alisson v West Brom (2021) Goalkeeper's header keeps Liverpool's CL dream alive

You cannot beat a goalkeeper scoring in the last minute to save his side, can you?

Alisson’s last-second header for Liverpool at West Brom late in the 2020/21 season wasn’t only a great moment, but it was also huge for the Reds in terms of their Champions League qualification hopes.

It’s just a shame there were no fans inside The Hawthorns.

9 Sergi Roberto v Paris Saint-Germain (2017) Barca star completes the comeback of all comebacks

There have been so many epic Champions League encounters over the years – and Barcelona’s 6-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain could top the pile.

Having lost 4-0 in the first leg of their last-16 clash back in 2017, Barca produced a stunning turnaround after looking doomed, culminating in Sergi Roberto scoring right at the death, before being mobbed by his teammates.

8 Lucas Moura v Ajax (2019) Brazilian completes iconic turnaround to send Spurs to final

Tottenham Hotspur may have gained a reputation for being ‘Spursy’, though this was anything but, as they reached the 2019 Champions League final in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Having trailed 2-0 at Ajax in the semi-final second leg and needing three goals to progress – having lost 1-0 in the first leg in north London – Spurs won 3-2, thanks mainly to Lucas Moura’s hat-trick.

The Brazilian’s winner in the dying seconds is surely one of the best moments in the club’s history.

7 Rodrygo v Man City (2022) Real Madrid blitz City at the death on way to semi-final victory

Real Madrid simply never know when they are beaten in the Champions League, and their mental resolve was never on show more than against Manchester City in the semi-finals in 2022.

Even by Madrid’s standards, this was remarkable, with Rodrygo scoring twice in stoppage time, with the latter goal taking the tie into extra-time. They progressed to yet another final, of course.

6 Troy Deeney v Leicester City (2013) Classic breakaway goal settles play-off semi

This could arguably be the greatest moment in the history of the Championship, on a day that etched Troy Deeney’s name into football folklore forever.

Having looked within seconds of bowing out of the play-offs against Leicester City, Watford progressed to the final following an unbelievable passage of play.

Anthony Knockaert’s missed penalty blew the Foxes’ chance to win in the last seconds, only for the Hornets to burst clear up the other end, leading to Deeney eventually firing into the net from Jonathan Hogg’s knockdown. The scenes inside Vicarage Road were unrivalled.

5 Andres Iniesta v Chelsea (2009) Spaniard ends controversial tie with sucker-punch equaliser

In terms of sliding doors moments, Andres Iniesta’s strike for Barcelona against Chelsea back in 2009 is right up there. How successful would they have been under Pep Guardiola without that goal?

Somehow, Barca managed to scrape past the Blues in the semi-final second leg, despite being outplayed and being on the right end of some terrible refereeing decisions.

Iniesta fired a superb strike into the top corner in the last minute, with Guardiola and his players losing their minds in the celebrations. They went on to beat Manchester United in the final.

4 Jimmy Glass v Plymouth (1999) On-loan 'keeper rescues Carlisle from Football League demotion

If you’ve never heard of or seen this goal, you’re missing out!

On the final day of the 1998/99 season, Carlisle United knew they needed to win to stay in the Football League, and all hope appeared to be lost heading into the final seconds of the campaign.

On-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass made himself the most unlikely hero, coming up for a corner and firing home following a scramble in the penalty area. There have been few more dramatic moments in the history of English football.

3 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer v Bayern Munich (1999) Norwegian seals treble in quickfire United comeback

The best night in Manchester United’s history also had the most unforgettable conclusion imaginable, as they were almost improbably crowned Champions League winners.

Having trailed Bayern Munich 1-0 heading into stoppage time, Teddy Sheringham equalised to seemingly take the game to extra-time. However, United didn’t stop there, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gaining legendary status with one touch of his right boot from their next attack.

It was the crowning evening of Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary career, and the manner of his side’s win couldn’t have been a better advert for ‘Fergie time’.

Fergie Time: Man United's top 10 best late goals – ranked

Be it at Old Trafford or Camp Nou, Man Utd have scored goals in added time aplenty, but which are the best?

ByRobin Mumford Oct 17, 2023 2 Michael Thomas v Liverpool (1989) Arsenal midfielder slots home to win league title at Anfield

In second place is Michael Thomas’ remarkable title-winning strike away to Liverpool back in 1989, in what could be the finest moment in Arsenal’s great history.

The Merseysiders were a relentless force during that period, so the fact that the Gunners knew they had to win by two goals at Anfield to win the First Division title on the final day summed up what a mammoth task it was.

Alan Smith’s opener in the second half gave Arsenal real hope, and it was left for Thomas to seal the most dramatic end to an English season, bursting through to send the travelling fans wild.

1 Sergio Aguero v QPR (2012) Striker delivers City's first Premier League title in nick of time

Could there really be anything else at No 1?

Seeing Sergio Aguero’s unforgettable winner against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2011/12 season still sends shivers down the spine.

It looked as though Man City had completely blown their Premier League title hopes as they headed into stoppage time, trailing 2-1 at the Etihad. Even worse, United were on the cusp of beating their rivals to yet more glory.

Edin Dzeko’s added-time header gave the hosts the tiniest bit of hope, but incredibly, there was still time for Aguero to find space in the area, bury his finish and inspire the most joyous of celebrations. Unless you’re a United fan, it’s impossible not to love it.

Shakib Al Hasan out of first Sri Lanka Test after testing positive for Covid

He joins a growing list of absentees, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taskin Ahmed also unavailable for Bangladesh

Shakib Al Hasan has tested positive for Covid, and is ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka that begins on May 15. He tested positive on Tuesday in a PCR and a rapid antigen test, pre-requisites for joining the team.Shakib was supposed to join the Bangladesh Test squad on Wednesday, two days after they started training in Chattogram on Monday. According to a BCB press release, he will now recover in self-isolation and will be re-tested in due course.Bangladesh haven’t named a replacement immediately but they did pick allrounder Mosaddek Hossain as cover for the injured Mehidy Hasan Miraz shortly after they had originally announced the Test squad.Shakib’s absence in Chattogram is going to be a major blow to the home side who are already without Mehidy and Taskin Ahmed, who wasn’t picked in the squad due to a shoulder injury he picked up in South Africa last month. Shoriful Islam is in the Test squad but his participation is subject to a fitness test ahead of the game.Bangladesh’s batting too needed Shakib’s experience in the middle order after they slumped to 53 and 80 in two fourth innings in South Africa. His absence usually means they have to pick two players to make up for his skills, but it is an even more significant blow since Bangladesh will be expected to put up better performances against Sri Lanka in a home World Test Championship series. It is the fifth Test that Shakib will miss since playing one against Pakistan back in December last year. He skipped the New Zealand series due to personal reasons and then had to miss the South Africa Tests due to illness in his family. Shakib has now played three Tests out of Bangladesh’s 11 since his return from the one year ban.

Celtic closing in on agreement for "great" goalkeeper to rival Schmeichel

Hoping to finally find a long-term option between the sticks, Celtic are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign a Premier League goalkeeper who would replace the ageing Kasper Schmeichel.

Celtic transfer news

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Celtic and Premier League have crossed paths in the January transfer window, with the Bhoys looking to dip into English football to land improvements on their way to yet another Scottish Premiership title. Among the options on that front is Kieran Tierney, who could return to his former club almost six years on from his departure to join Arsenal.

It’s a deal that would certainly make sense in the face of Greg Taylor’s likely exit at the end of his current contract this summer and given just how desperately Tierney needs a career revival.

The left-back isn’t the only Premier League player to have been linked to the Scottish giants, however. According to the Star in Turkey, Celtic are closing in on an agreement to sign Altay Bayindir, who is currently playing the role of deputy behind Andre Onana at Manchester United.

Now 26 years old and ready to become a number one elsewhere, Bayindir could reportedly be shown the door at Old Trafford in pursuit of the regular game time that he’d get in place of the ageing Schmeichel.

5 players who could leave Celtic this January

There could be a clearout at Parkhead this month…

ByBarney Lane Jan 4, 2025

38 years old and on course to leave Celtic Park as a free agent in the summer, unless he does put pen to paper on an extension, Schmeichel could yet make way for a younger, more long-term option in the form of Bayindir.

With that said, the Bhoys may have to wait until the summer if they want to secure Bayindir’s signature, with the Manchester United goalkeeper’s own agent pouring cold water on any burning transfer flames by telling reporters as relayed by United in Focus: “There were offers from many European clubs and the Premier League for Altay at the beginning of the season.

“There are currently clubs that are interested, but Altay wants to stay and play for Manchester United. The club definitely does not want to let Altay go.”

"Great" Bayindir can end Celtic's goalkeeper search

Whilst Schmeichel deserves great credit for how he has successfully replaced Joe Hart in the current campaign, he was always going to be a short-term option rather than someone who can take that number one role for years to come. Instead, that’s where Bayindir should come in. A player with plenty more years ahead of him and one ready to step into a starting role, the move would suit all parties.

Despite acting as Manchester United’s number two in recent times, the goalkeeper has still earned impressive praise from former Turkey assistant manager Mehmet Mzdilek, who was quick to talk up Bayindir’s “great” work with the ball at his feet last year.

MP's Kumar Kartikeya, Saransh Jain lead rout of Punjab in quarter-finals

Spinners take ten wickets between them to bowl Punjab out for 203 in the second innings and propel MP to semi-finals

Kumar Kartikeya starred with six wickets in the second innings•BCCI

If it was the seamers Puneet Datey and Anubhav Agarwal who seized the initiative for Madhya Pradesh on the first day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Punjab, spinners Kumar Kartikeya and Saransh Jain took charge in the second innings to lead a ten-wicket rout. Madhya Pradesh now await the winners of the Bengal-Jharkhand match in the semi-final.Punjab folded for 203 in the second innings, leaving a paltry 26 for Madhya Pradesh to chase down, which openers Himanshu Mantri and Yash Dubey achieved without much fuss, although Gurkeerat Singh Mann failed to hold on to a chance offered by Mantri off the bowling of Punjab captain Abhishek Sharma.Punjab resumed play on day four at 120 for 5, still 58 adrift of making their opponents bat again. Wicketkeeper-batter Anmol Malhotra (34) and Siddarth Kaul (31) began steadily, raising visions of taking the game deep, and perhaps even setting Punjab on course for a healthy lead. They blunted the spin of Kartikeya and the seam of Datey equally effectively, and Kaul chanced his arm to punish anything loose. However, this positivity from Kaul would also end the partnership – he was stumped in an attempt to step out and heave Jain over midwicket. That set off a sequence of quick wickets that Punjab could never recover from. Sanvir Singh was bowled second ball by Kartikeya and then the left-arm spinner got the well-set Malhotra, taken at slip by Rajat Patidar. Mayank Markande batted with freedom, clouting a four and three sixes in an unbeaten 33 off 37 balls, but it only served to delay the inevitable, as Jain picked up the wickets of Vinay Choudhary and Baltej Singh inside three deliveries to finish off the Punjab innings.Having conceded a first-innings deficit of 178, Punjab had struggled to stitch together anything meaningful for the second innings in a row. Their top and middle order, filled with experience and quality, failed to navigate the web spun by Kartikeya. On a pitch that had started taking turn, Kartikeya got both Shubman Gill and Mandeep Singh to edge to Patidar at slip. Jain joined in the fun at the other end, dismissing the joint top-scorers of the first innings Abhishek and Anmolpreet. That left the lower middle order to wage a battle on what turned out to be the final day of the contest, one that ceased to be as soon as Kaul’s wicket fell.Earlier, Madhya Pradesh rode on Shubham Sharma’s 102 to post a total of 397 in the first innings after bowling Punjab out for a paltry 219. Mantri and Rajat Patidar fell 11 and 15 runs short of centuries, respectively, while Akshat Raghuwanshi scored 69. Left-arm wrist spinner Vinay Choudhary starred with five wickets for Punjab in the first innings, while Siddharth Kaul and Markande chipped in with two wickets apiece. However, Madhya Pradesh’s lead had swelled by then.
