Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew bring promise of renewal to Trafalgar Road

Youthful partnership captivates Southport crowd on perfect summer’s day

You could argue the pandemic has taught us to treasure occasions like this; you may blithely insist a four-year absence was always likely to sharpen appetites; or you might simply maintain it was love of the game, a concept both vague and easily identified, that caused people to stream into Trafalgar Road in the hour before play, as Lancashire versus Somerset prepared to get underway this morning. What you could not doubt, though, was the appreciation shown for every good thing by the spectators that packed even the corners of this proud ground, sitting or standing six deep on the mound below the scoreboard. And let it be noted that never was the applause louder than three overs before the close, when Lewis Goldsworthy cover-drove George Balderson to the railway boundary and thus reached his maiden first-class century with his fifteenth four. There are places where the achievements of opposing players are greeted with grim expressions and perfunctory applause, if that. Southport is not amongst them. This may have been a parochial crowd – nothing wrong there, of course – but it was never rudely provincial. That would have disfigured the day and people wanted to remember it for better reasons. And not the least of them was the sustained applause that paid tribute to John Gwynne, who reported on darts, football and cricket in a long journalistic career and was lately Lancashire’s public address announcer.Gwynney, whose death was announced on Saturday, would have loved this day, and for all his marrow-deep Lancastrian loyalty, he would have enjoyed interviewing Goldsworthy and sharing the young cricketer’s joy. The latter emotion was very evident when the 21-year-old answered the questions of other journalists and it became clear this was a day he will remember for as long as he plays cricket, and then for decades after he retires. “It’s a lovely place to play – I’ve never been here before,” he said. “The crowd were brilliant and the sun was out – it was a beautiful day and I’m really proud.”Goldsworthy’s pleasure is justified in spades. For all that he stroked some fine boundaries in front of the wicket, his innings was notable for a sound defensive technique and for some skilful deflections behind the wicket off all Lancashire’s seamers. And what made his pleasure all the deeper was that he had shared most of his day with James Rew, an England Under-19 batter almost three years his junior with whom he put on 145, thus establishing a new fifth-wicket record for Somerset against Lancashire, thereby eclipsing the mark set by Sammy Woods and Henry Martyn at Taunton in 1905. Rew was making his County Championship debut and we were wondering whether he, too, was set for a century when he clipped a half-volley from Will Williams straight to Tom Bailey and departed for 70.”It was a great knock from James on his debut – the calmness he showed was brilliant,” Goldsworthy said. “I’m in the infancy of my career too so we were both talking to each other and it was a pleasure to be out there with him.”At the same time, Goldsworthy and Rew had to do a lot of hard work before they could enjoy the reward of that labour. For two and a half hours Lancashire’s bowlers made light of losing the toss and dominated the game. Twice in his first five overs, Tom Bailey slanted the new ball skilfully across Steve Davies and Matt Renshaw but neither left-hander covered the bounce and Rob Jones pocketed the chances at slip, Renshaw’s at the second grab. Tom Lammonby and George Bartlett then put on 60 and Lammonby’s straight driving was one of the relatively few joys of the morning for the Somerset supporters who draped a flag with a wyvern rampant on a garden fence at the Harrod Drive End. Six hours later, of course, it captured the mood of the day.The morning, though, was Lancashire’s. Twenty minutes before lunch Dane Vilas, who is keeping wicket in the absence of Phil Salt, called on the left-arm spin of Jack Morley from the Harrod Drive End. Morley’s second ball was well-flighted, its loop almost disgracefully seductive. Bartlett played over the top of it and was yorked for 27 by a ball travelling at something like 45mph. Half an hour after lunch Lammonby played defensively across the line to a delivery from Williams but his stroke was as lazy as the afternoon heat. The ball thudded into the heart of the pad and James Middlebrook sent the left-hander on his way for 47.The cricket and those watching it drifted into the heart of the day. Improbable stories were told of couples spending their honeymoon in Roland Butcher’s holiday flat. We waited for wickets to fall, for Somerset’s youngsters to be bamboozled by the skill of Bailey and Luke Wood. When he had made 18, Rew was dropped at slip by Luke Wells, a sharp chance off Morley. Some thought it didn’t matter. They were wrong. Somerset’s young batters grew in authority and now this warm day in Birkdale will be memorable for the innings of Goldsworthy and Rew and for the life of John Gwynne. And since Goldsworthy is the most courteous of fellows, he will not mind if this report ends with a recollection of a fine sports reporter and a lovely bloke.Ever a man of the people, Gwynne loved outground cricket and covered several matches at Trafalgar Road in the era when Lancashire’s visit was an undisputed annual ritual. One year he was asked to report on a match for BBC radio through the day, before doing a piece to camera on the regional evening news programme . Gwynne decided to change into a suit for his TV appearance but it was the 1970s and he had gone in for one of the colourful, wide-lapelled numbers that were sadly fashionable at the time. Just prior to going on air, the gaudily dressed Gwynne entered the press tent. “Bloody hell, Gwynney,” exclaimed Neil Hallam of “I didn’t realise you were on .

Newcastle set to make a move to sign "outstanding" £33m Murphy upgrade

Newcastle United supporters are loving life right now.

On Tuesday night, goals from Alexander Isak and then Anthony Gordon saw the Magpies beat Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, leaving the Toon Army on the brink of Wembley.

Newcastle players celebrate

Overall, that’s now seven successive victories for Eddie Howe’s side in all competitions, claiming five straight wins in the Premier League, climbing from 12th up to fifth in the table.

So, currently on course for Champions League qualification and dreaming of a first major domestic trophy for 70 years, the mood on Tyneside could hardly be any better, but could Newcastle dip into the January transfer market to strengthen their squad further?

Newcastle looking at PSG star

According to a report by Italian outlet Tutto Mercato earlier this week, Newcastle United will attempt to “make a move” to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Lee Kang-in in the next few days after making enquiries regarding his availability.

The source states that Manchester United are also vying for the South Korean’s signature with a valuation of around £33m being floated around.

So, just who is Lee Kang-in?

How Lee Kang-in would improve Newcastle

A 23-year-old forward, he joined La Liga club Valencia as an 11-year-old, making his senior debut during a Copa del Rey match against Ebro in October 2018.

After 62 appearances for los Che, he moved to Mallorca on a Bosman in the summer of 2021, certainly catching the eye during his two seasons in the Balearic Islands because, in July 2023, Paris Saint-Germain came calling, paying €22m (£18m) for his signature.

Since joining the serial Ligue 1 champions, Lee has scored 11 goals in 60 outings for les Parisiens, most notably on target during a 3-0 Champions League victory over A.C. Milan last term.

In this campaign, he’s established himself as a key figure in Luis Enrique’s side, starting 14 of their 24 matches, racking up 1,366 minutes, while also cementing his place as one of the first names on the team sheet at international level, featuring in each of the Taegeuk Warriors’ last 22 competitive fixtures.

Korean journalist Joel Kim described his compatriot as “outstanding”, adding this is “only the beginning” of his stardom, but could Lee’s future lie in the North East?

Lee is a very versatile player, albeit he has been predominantly deployed on the right-wing, a position currently occupied by Jacob Murphy at Newcastle, so would the South Korean be an upgrade?

As shown in the table, Lee has outperformed Murphy since the start of last season for almost every chosen metric, with assists the sole exception.

The Korean registered twice as many touches, emphasising that he’s significantly more involved in play, while his pass completion % was exponentially higher.

Lee also scored more goals, attempted more shots and registered more progressive carries, while his goals – xG figure is a very impressive (+4.4), sat third in Ligue 1 for this metric this campaign, while also 18th across Europe’s top five leagues, reiterating that he is an extremely clinical finisher.

Sam Tabuteau of Breaking The Lines calls Murphy one of the most hard-working players in the Premier League, a key figure in Newcastle’s recent run of wins, but if the Magpies want to go to the next level, they’ll require that extra bit of quality that Lee could certainly provide, forming a formidable front three alongside Isak and Gordon.

VEJA OUTRAS RESPOSTAS:

NEYMAR

Jogou no Barcelona no auge daquele time com Messi e aquela turma toda.

A Gunners approach has been made to the representatives of Botafogo striker Igor Jesus, as per reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, with fellow Brazil international forward Matheus Cunha being targeted by Arsenal as well – amid his contract stalemate at Wolves.

As well as the South American duo, Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović, Sporting Lisbon superstar Viktor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko have all been linked with moves to north London in the last few weeks.

Arsenal failed with a proposal to sign Sesko from Leipzig in the summer, with the Slovenian instead signing a contract extension. However, the highly-rated centre-forward has a “gentleman’s agreement” with his current club that he can leave either this year or in 2026 (Fabrizio Romano).

According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Arsenal are weighing up the possibility of a January deal for Sesko, amid their search for a prolific number nine.

There have been reports that Arsenal have held talks with Sesko’s entourage already, with Romano now providing his own update.

Arsenal have made January contact with RB Leipzig over Sesko

As per the reliable journalist, Arsenal have made some contact over signing Sesko in January. However, Romano’s update comes with a warning, as Leipzig are understandably not keen on losing their star striker mid-season.

“[One target is] Benjamin Sesko, because they had some contacts for Sesko in the last 10 to 15 days,” said Romano to GiveMeSport.

“But what I’m told is that RB Leipzig insist on their decision to keep the player at the club until the end of the season. So it’s not going to be easy. It will take something completely crazy in terms of financials to convince Leipzig in January.”

The 21-year-old has already scored 14 goals across all competitions, and is on course to better his 2023/2024 season. His new contract is also said to include a reported £63 million release clause, so if they were to agree terms with Sesko, Arsenal could bypass Leipzig in negotiations entirely.

The first day/night women’s List A match at Emirates Old Trafford went the way of Thunder after the hosts beat Central Sparks by 28 runs on DLS in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. For Thunder it was a first victory in the competition this season with Emma Lamb’s 68 the pick of several good contributions with the bat before the England international struck with three late wickets to halt Sparks progress in the run chase.Abi Freeborn top-scored in the match with a run-a-ball 72 but the Sparks’ No. 3 failed to receive the necessary support to get the visitors over the line as the Thunder spun their way to victory, bowling their visitors out for 191.The win takes Thunder off the bottom of the table, level on four points with Sparks and Lightning, but with all three teams 10 points behind third-placed South East Stars.Opening Sparks pair Eve Jones and Davina Perrin made a steady start in pursuit of their 237 target, taking 34 runs from the 10-over powerplay, but in an explosive 12th over Jones pulled Deandra Dottin for the first six of the match before losing her off stump two balls later as the Thunder struck an early blow.

Perrin and Freeborn countered with a 67-run partnership to put the visitors on top either side of a further rain interruption that saw five overs lost from the innings leaving Sparks a revised target of 220 off 43 overs. Two wickets in three balls by left-arm spinner Hannah Jones brought Thunder back into contention at 111 for three in the 28th over. Ellie Threlkeld had Perrin stumped for 46 while Ami Campbell was brilliantly caught by Laura Marshall at short extra cover.Freeborn and Emily Arlott ran well to reduce the target to 83 required from the last 10 overs but Freeborn continued to lose partners with the off-spin of Lamb accounting for Arlott, Thea Brooks and Ria Fackrell in quick succession with a decisive seven-over spell of 3 for 26 from the James Anderson end.Although Freeborn reached a 59-ball fifty she perished to Alex Hartley for 72 at the start of the 40th over and Kate Cross finished proceedings with two wickets from consecutive balls.Following a delayed start with four overs lost to rain, Sparks inserted Thunder on a pitch offering the bowlers some assistance on a damp and overcast afternoon.Emily Arlott took four wickets•Laura Malkin/Laura Malkin

Arlott and Grace Potts made the most of the conditions bowling a tight line and length to make early inroads and restrict Thunder to 28 for 2 from the opening 10-over powerplay.Arlott took a sensational one-handed catch in her first over to have Georgie Boyce caught and bowled for a duck while Potts, who had been cut for the first four of the match by Dottin, trapped the Thunder overseas allrounder lbw for eight. It was Lamb – in such fine form this summer – who led a good Thunder recovery, well supported by Laura Marshall in a 90-run partnership from 82 balls as conditions eased.Lamb made the most of being dropped on 30 at point off seamer Liz Russell to reach fifty for the ninth time this season across all formats from 52 balls while Marshall played with increasing assurance in making 41 before chipping a return catch to spinner Georgia Davis.Captain Threlkeld helped maintain momentum with 40 from 49 balls in partnership with Lamb before the England opener missed a reverse sweep off legspinner Hannah Baker to depart for an excellent 68 with Thunder 154 for 4 after 30 overs.Threlkeld and Cross continued the Thunder attack by adding 65 runs for the sixth wicket across 11 overs before both departed in the hunt for late runs; Cross holing out to Campbell at deep midwicket off Potts for 38 and Threlkeld bowled for 46 by the excellent Arlott who finished with four for 36 from her 10 overs. And Thunder’s 236 for 9 from their 48 overs, and the later revised target, proved to be enough.

Move over Nunez: 8/10 Liverpool star was the real star of the show

Liverpool continued their march towards a second Premier League title in the club’s history with a 2-0 win over Brentford away from home on Saturday.

The Reds battled hard throughout the match, against a strong Bees side, but looked to be on course for a frustrating draw until the enigmatic Darwin Nunez had his say in stoppage time.

With no Diogo Jota available, Arne Slot called upon the Uruguay international to come up with the goods off the bench, and that is exactly what he did with two strikes to win the game.

It was a terrific display from the former Benfica man, who has had his fair share of struggles in the Premier League this season, and one that could help him to kick on in the second half of the season.

Darwin Nunez's heroics against Brentford

Prior to this clash with the Bees, Nunez had scored two goals in 15 appearances in the top-flight, starting seven of those outings, which shows that he has failed to provide quality in front of goal on a regular basis.

Provide quality is exactly what the 25-year-old star did this time around, however, as he scored both of Liverpool’s goals in stoppage time to secure a big win for his side.

He was in the right place at the right time to calmly slot the ball into the back of the net from six yards out for the first, before showcasing his composure and ball-striking ability for the second – taking a touch and rifling an effort into the roof of the net.

Nunez, who had more shots (four) than passes made (two) off the bench, was not the real hero of the match for Slot, though, as Trent Alexander-Arnold was the true star of the game for Liverpool.

Why Trent Alexander-Arnold was the real hero

Whilst the Uruguayan striker deserves plenty of plaudits for his match-winning contributions off the bench, the England international played the full 90 minutes and contributed to the win with his work on and off the ball.

Trent

The right-back provided quality in and out of possession for the Reds and was key to keeping a clean sheet against Thomas Frank’s side, as he made one tackle and two interceptions and was not dribbled past a single time by an opposition player.

Alexander-Arnold, who received a rating of 8/10 from The Express for his performance, put in a fantastic defensive display that was coupled with creative quality on the ball.

As you can see in the table above, the 26-year-old sensation created five chances for his teammates throughout the game, the last of which was finally converted by Nunez for the opening goal.

Alexander-Arnold made a smart run into the right channel inside the box and then pulled the ball across the box, brilliantly, for the striker to tap in from close range.

The English dynamo, therefore, was crucial to the clean sheet and vital to the goal that ultimately broke the deadlock and won the match with his cross for Nunez, which is why he was the real hero for Slot, as his all-round performance played a massive role in the victory.
