Bruce Pairaudeau, the former West Indies and Northern Districts batter, has died aged 91.Pairaudeau, who was born in British Guiana in 1931, played 13 Tests for West Indies between 1953 and 1957 alongside Frank Worrell, Everton Weekes and Alf Valentine. He fell in love with New Zealand on a tour to the country in 1956. After emigrating to New Zealand, he captained Northern Districts to their first Plunket Shield title in 1962-63 before retiring from domestic cricket in 1966-67.Pairaudeau had made his debut for Guiana in 1947 at the age of 15 and scored his maiden hundred the following season. He then scored a century on Test debut against India in Port of Spain in 1953, but in 20 further innings he only got into double figures six times. He finished with an overall 454 runs in 13 Test matches at an average of 21.61.Related

More recently in 2015, Pairaudeau and his friend drove from Hamilton to Napier to watch the visiting West Indies team train.”We heard a West Indian voice and when I looked at who it was, I thought it might be Bruce Pairaudeau. We knew he lived in New Zealand but we didn’t know he was coming over,” Philip Spooner, West Indies’ media manager, told ESPNcricinfo at the time “All the guys just loved meeting him.”Pairaudeau is survived by son Jeffrey and three grandchildren.

India’s stand-in head coach also heaps praise on Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill ahead of the first game

Laxman: ‘Hardik has an exemplary work ethic’
VVS Laxman is keen to see India play an aggressive brand of white-ball cricket in New Zealand, but he also hopes that the young batting group will show enough game smarts and situational awareness at the same time.”In T20 cricket, it’s important to be aggressive,” Laxman said on the eve of the opening T20I in Wellington, “and we have the guys who have this ability to express themselves. So that’s the message from the captain and myself: be aggressive, but also focus on conditions and situations, and use that experience.”Yes, our regular top order of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli isn’t here, but the players who have been selected have played a lot of international cricket, especially T20 cricket.”Related

Laxman, who has stepped in for the rested Rahul Dravid after India’s T20 World Cup campaign where they lost in the semi-final. also talked about the need for specialists in white-ball cricket going forward.”There’s definitely a lot of cricket being played, there’s no doubt about that,” he said, touching upon India selecting a young squad for the tour. “India is very fortunate to have so many players to choose from. As a team management and selection committee member, you have to be mindful of when to give breaks to certain players. Breaks are important, to not only physically rejuvenate but also mentally.”India is lucky to have that kind of bench, a pool of players to choose from. I think that will be the case going forward, especially in white-ball cricket, you require specialist players. Going forward, in T20s you will see a lot more T20 specialists, but managing their workload and choosing players from the pool we have is a blessing Indian cricket has.”1:55
Hardik: We don’t need to prove anything to anyone
Laxman also gave a ringing endorsement of Hardik Pandya’s leadership credentials, having previously worked with him on the tour of Ireland earlier this year. Prior to that, Hardik led unheralded Gujarat Titans to a title win in their inaugural season at the IPL.Hardik’s mature leadership, selection and decision-making under pressure earned him plaudits from several quarters at that time. Now, there has been a growing chorus within Indian cricket circles over the need to hand him the T20I captaincy looking ahead to the next 20-over World Cup in 2024.”He’s a fabulous leader,” Laxman said. “We’ve seen what he has done at Gujarat in the IPL. Someone taking on the leadership role in the first year itself and winning the Cup is no mean achievement. I have spent time with him from the Ireland series. He is not only tactically good but also very calm on the field. That’s very important when you’re playing at the highest level, because there will be situations where you will be under pressure. That’s when as a leader you have to be calm.

“But also, his presence in the dressing room and his work ethics are exemplary. The way he leads on the field is fabulous. He is a players’ captain; he is very approachable. All players confide in him, and that’s something I really like about him as captain. He leads by example on and off the field.”Among those he is excited about going forward is Shubman Gill, who is the only uncapped member in the format in the 16-member T20I squad. In many ways, Gill is returning to where it all began. It was in New Zealand that Gill announced himself to the world with a Player-of-the-Tournament performance during India’s title-winning run in the Under-19 World Cup in 2018. Exactly a year later, it was here that he made his ODI debut. Now, a T20I debut beckons.Coincidentally, Gill also played a key role in Hardik’s Titans winning the IPL title. He was their second-highest run-getter, making 483 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 132.32. In ODIs, since July 2022, he has scored three half-centuries and a century in nine innings; the kind of form that puts him in the reckoning to be a back-up opener as India build towards the 50-over World Cup next year.”It’s very clear he’s one of the most talented players India have,” Laxman said. “In the opportunities he has had at the highest level, he has shown what a class player he is. Slowly and gradually, he is becoming a very consistent performer, a match-winner. He has a great future ahead of him.”
Manchester City have become a real powerhouse of European football over the past 15 years or so. They have invested heavily in the best players, and have dominated European football as a result, led by the legendary Pep Guardiola.
The Spaniard has guided the Citizens to 18 major trophies throughout his time at the club, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy, which came in the 2022/23 campaign. Of course, that season, City won their first treble, beating Inter in the Champions League final to seal it.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Over the years, some excellent players have represented the club and helped them achieve their glory. Not all of them still represent City, and there have been some surprising sales under Guardiola.
City’s worst sales under Guardiola
Undoubtedly one of the biggest mistakes City have made under legendary manager Guardiola when it comes to outgoings was to sell Cole Palmer. He joined Chelsea in 2023 for £42.5m and has gone on to become “the best player in the Premier League” according to Jamie Carragher, at least if he continues his form.
Cole Palmer in action for Chelsea
During his Chelsea career so far, Palmer has played 73 games, scoring 39 times and grabbing 21 assists. He has been a goal machine, scoring four times in a single match twice, including all goals in a 4-2 win over Brighton and Hove Albion earlier in the season.
Another player who City arguably should have kept at the club was Brahim Diaz. The Moroccan attacking midfielder played 15 times for the club but moved to Real Madrid in 2019 for a reported £15m.
He has since gone on to play 98 times for Los Blancos, scoring and assisting on 36 occasions. He recently broke City’s heart by scoring against them in the Champions League playoff round first leg at the Etihad Stadium, a tie the Spanish giants went on to win.
However, as bad as these sales were, they arguably do not come close to a departure last summer.
City’s bad sale from the 2024 summer window
Finding a replacement for Sergio Aguero was never going to be easy for the Citizens. However, in Julian Alvarez, they found someone who could have eventually become just as effective in front of goal. He was a player Aguero previously spoke highly of; Jolean Lescott said the former City star told him Alvarez is a “top talent”.
Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez
The East Mancunian side brought Alvarez to the club for just £14.1m in January 2022 from River Plate. However, he did not make the move to England until the summer, remaining at the Argentine giants on loan until the end of the season.
When he eventually did move to the Citizens, he was superb. Alvarez played 103 times for the club, scoring 36 goals and grabbing 17 assists. However, given he was competing with Erling Haaland for a spot in the team, he was not a guaranteed starter. His 6007 minutes for the club were the equivalent of just 66 full 90-minute games.
The striker, who was once described as a “clinical” player by Statman Dave, was incredibly versatile during his City days. He played in several positions, each to a great degree of success, showing his quality across the pitch.

Stats from Transfermarkt
In the summer, City sold their former striker to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid. He cost Diego Simeone’s side £81.5m including add-ons, and has been impressive in that time. Alvarez has scored 17 times and grabbed four assists in 37 appearances so far, playing almost entirely as a centre-forward.
Given his impressive record for the Madrid outfit, it might not come as a surprise that his value has risen from the fee City sold him for. Alvarez is now worth up to €127m (£105m) according to CIES Football Observatory.
Looking back on it, perhaps selling Alvarez was a mistake from City. Not only was he clinical during his time at the Etihad Stadium, but he has continued that form away from the club. Given his value now, it might have been better for City to keep him and move him on for £100m or more, or just utilise his impressive skillset themselves.

>ATUAÇÕES: Diego Alves e Matheuzinho recebem as menores notas
QUAL É O POSICIONAMENTO DO TREINADOR?
Things are starting to look a little rosier for Ipswich Town.
After weeks of poor results and lacklustre displays, Kieran McKenna’s side seem to have picked up some form in the last two weeks.
First came a thumping win over Coventry City in the FA Cup, and then in an incredibly tough Premier League game away to Aston Villa, even though they were a man down for over 50 minutes, the Tractor Boys fought tooth and nail for a point.
However, this afternoon brings with it another challenge, as a resurgent Tottenham Hotspur come to Portman Road to try and avenge the result of the reverse fixture, although to ensure that doesn’t happen, McKenna has to unleash one of his most talented players, someone who’d get into this Spurs side.
Ipswich's record against Spurs
Since their first meeting back in October 1961, Ipswich have played Spurs 54 times across all competitions, winning 22, drawing eight and losing 24.
While the Tractor Boys’ overall record against Tottenham is pretty good, their recent form against the North Londoners is even better.
Across their last ten encounters, going back to September 1993, the Suffolk side have been victorious over their opponents from the capital five times, shared the spoils twice and lost just three games.
Ipswich Town managerKieranMcKennaapplauds fans after the match
This impressive form continued into the game at the Lilywhites’ ground earlier this season, when goals from Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap gave McKenna’s men a brilliant 2-1 victory, which also happened to be their first of the campaign.
The Northern Irishman will be hoping his side can claim all three points again this afternoon, but to give them the best chance of doing so, he has to unleash one of his most impressive players, who’d certainly get into this Spurs team.
The Ipswich star who'd walk into Spurs' team
So, the first name that is probably coming to mind at the moment is the incredible Liam Delap, and while he too would get into Postecoglou’s team at the moment, he’s not the player we are thinking of.
Instead, the Ipswich ace McKenna has to start this afternoon, and who would also walk into the Spurs lineup is Leif Davis.
The manager told the press that the incredible full-back was back in contention yesterday afternoon, and due to his immense talent, if he’s back in contention to start, he should start.

We say this, as despite playing for a team fighting relegation, the former Leeds United gem has managed to consistently positively impact the game in the attacking third this season, racking up a seriously impressive tally of one goal and three assists in just 24 league games.
That means the “remarkable” talent, as dubbed by former professional turned pundit Jobi McAnuff, is averaging a goal involvement every six games in the toughest league in the world from the left-back position.
Moreover, as he plays off the left, he’d get into the Tottenham side by allowing the brilliant Djed Spence to move back to his natural position of right-back, in turn replacing Pedro Porro, who has been heavily criticised at points this season and was even labelled a “nightmare” by Spurs content creator Seb Martin for his defensive showing against Arsenal last month.
Ultimately, Ipswich need to keep the positive momentum going against Tottenham this afternoon and to ensure the team have the best chance of picking up all three points, McKenna has to play Davis from the start.

“That’s an approach that can work if the conditions are really docile like it was in Pakistan”
Firdose Moonda08-Dec-2022
What kind of Test approach does Rassie van der Dussen believe in? “I prefer the cat and mouse”•Getty Images
Batting in Test cricket is not all fun and games, even if England are making it look that way. That’s the word from returning South Africa batter Rassie van der Dussen, who favours a balance of powers in the red-ball game rather than the run-dominant approach England have taken since Brendan McCullum and Ben Stokes took over in May.In the Bazball era, England have scored runs quicker than anyone else, at 4.77 to the over, and won seven of the eight Tests they have played. Their most recent triumph over Pakistan in Rawalpindi was built on the back of four first-innings centuries, a brave second-innings declaration and speedy scoring – at 6.50 and 7.36 runs in the two innings – and is being spoken as a victory that could change the way Test cricket is played. But van der Dussen is not that convinced.”If there’s ever a place to play like that it’s probably Pakistan,” he said, quickly remembering that South Africa did not bat like that when they toured there in early 2021. “And then you are going to follow up with a question of why didn’t we play like that when we were there. But if you look at the English side, they have been very vocal in terms of they are going to back their guys, even through a few failures. They are out of the World Test Championship (WTC) for this run so it’s almost a nothing-to-lose type of game that they can play.”Related

South Africa, on the other hand, are second on the WTC points table and need to win at least one Test on the Australia tour to stay in the final race. While they plan on approaching the series in a similar way to how they have always played – steady with the bat and sensational with the ball – van der Dussen also hopes conditions will support a “good balance between bat and ball,” something South Africa have not had in the WTC cycle so far. They have played on slow surfaces in the West Indies, and seamer-friendly pitches at home, in New Zealand and in England, where they suffered their only series loss. The 2-1 defeat is where van der Dussen believes his point was best proved: England’s ultra-aggressive approach only works if the quick bowlers can’t get into the game.”To an extent, they [the England batters] tried it against us and it didn’t really work, even though we lost the series at the end,” he said. “That’s an approach that can work if the conditions are really docile like it was in Pakistan. As soon as the bowlers are a bit more into it, like we saw at Lord’s, it’s a very fine line between going out and playing aggressively and then getting out, as opposed to being more disciplined.”All that said, van der Dussen conceded that South Africa have not been the model line-up either. With only two centuries in their current WTC campaign and six from their last 19 games, they are lagging behind the other WTC contenders and know that more is expected of them.”We are not looking for excuses. We want to get more hundreds and more partnerships and score a lot more runs individually,” he said. “But if we can bat as a unit, and get our team across the line, that’s the main thing.”Scraping together small individual scores got South Africa a victory at Lord’s but it quickly proved not enough. They were bowled out for under 200 in each of their next four innings in England, where all three Tests in England ended in three days. That spoke as much to the quality of and assistance for the bowlers, as to the weakness in both batting line-ups. There were only two centuries in the series and in the final Test at The Oval, wickets fell every 4.2 overs – more frequently than ever before in a Test match. In the complete opposite to what took place in Pakistan earlier this week, bat dominated ball which is also not exactly what van der Dussen is advocating for. He punts for Test cricket that is “supposed to be a fair battle between bat and ball.”But what about the entertainment value?McCullum and Stokes have taken the approach that more proactive batting will put bums on seats and eyeballs on screens. Asked if he thinks that is the case, van der Dussen stuck to his stoicism.”I prefer the cat and mouse,” he said. “We played against the England Lions in Kent and they played the same way. It was a very flat and tame wicket that they prepared and the guys came out swinging. At the end of the day, you say well played but this is not the Test wickets we are used to. A week later we were at Lord’s and it was going around and the bowlers were much more in the game. That’s where the real quality batters will come to the fore – the guys who are disciplined in that fourth-stump channel, who can judge the length, who can play the short ball – short ball that can actually come up to head height and not just shoulder height. There needs to be some sort of risk element involved in batting.”And he hopes fans will agree. “People like seeing that – a lot of shots and a lot of runs – but the purist and the real Test fan likes it when the balance is even between bat and ball and the bowlers are in the game as much as the batters.”

Eu me dedico.

Amadurecimento. Time cheio de meninos que vieram a primeira vez, Giovane. Fica feliz, satisfeito.
