Player Zone: Marko Arnautovic is finally on the verge of becoming the player he always had the potential to be

[ad_pod ]

Remarkably, when Marko Arnautovic eventually looks back upon his playing career in football, he may have David Moyes to thank for preventing him from becoming just another nearly man.

The Scotsman can’t be credited with ‘discovering’ Arnautovic – the Austrian’s outrageous talent has never been a secret – but Moyes certainly deserves some praise for having unlocked the 29-year-old’s true potential at West Ham.

Before the appointment of Moyes at the London Stadium, Arnautovic had shown flashes of his ability. At Stoke City and Werder Bremen before that and Inter Milan before that, Arnautovic would occasionally produce a moment of magic that hinted towards the untapped reservoirs of brilliance he had stowed away in his locker.

Jose Mourinho, speaking about his time in charge of Arnautovic at the San Siro, once said, “Marko is a great guy, but he has the mentality of a child”, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

Finally, now, Arnautovic looks to have matured. Whilst he will always be a volatile and brash presence on the pitch, the consistency and commitment that has been on show in his game in recent months is evidence of his development.

A very tangible aspect of Arnautovic’s maturation into a lethal and reliable Premier League forward are the figures he is producing on a regular basis for the Hammers.

The most obvious measure of a striker’s contribution is goals. In that respect, Arnautovic is certainly delivering. The 72-cap international has four league strikes under his belt already this season. In fact, in all competitions for the Irons since his arrival, Arnautovic has notched 15 goals in 41 games. In comparison, he found the back of the net just 16 times in 84 outings for Werder Bremen.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”302265″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts The Icelandic Coutinho & The Scottish Ronaldo”]

This season so far he has achieved an expected goals per 90 minutes (xG90) rating of 0.6. Last time out, his xG90 was 0.38.

Arnautovic’s improved record in front of goal is certainly due in part to his shift from a wide berth into a central role. However, a switch in positions doesn’t tell the full story. Arnautovic’s recent performance levels only occur as a result of hard work and dedication. For so long, those aspects have arguably been lacking from his game. Now, West Ham are the ones benefitting from seeing Arnautovic go the extra mile.

This begs the question: why now?

Arnautovic is an individual who certainly gives the impression of being someone who thrives off of being the star man. When West Ham signed him in 2017, the £20 million fee they paid was a club record at the time. This price tag, along with Moyes’ later decision to move Arnautovic into a central role, cemented the forward’s status as the main man in Stratford.

As a talismanic figure, Arnautovic has developed a strong connection with the Hammers faithful and seems to be invigorated by the expectation and pressure now on his shoulders. This opportunity to be a star for an internationally renowned club in a huge stadium looks to be bringing the best out of the ex-Stoke City man.

Another factor in Arnautovic’s renaissance is the calibre of player he now finds himself lining up alongside week in week out. It is probably fair to say that this season’s West Ham squad, on a man for man basis, is the most talented that Arnautovic has been a part of since his Inter Milan days.

The summer acquisitions of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko did not just represent fine additions to Manuel Pellegrini’s squad. On top of that, they were also players who were identified as the ideal partners for Arnautovic. This is a team being built around the Austrian.

As part of this top class trio, Arnautovic is thriving, and living up to the billing of being the spearhead of West Ham’s attack.

HYS: Should Liverpool revive move for Napoli midfielder Zielinski?

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool have been having a fine season, but they hit a bump in the road on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten 1-0 by Napoli in their second group game of the Champions League, and nobody connected to the club could admit that they were hard done by.

The team set up to dig out a result in Naples, but they struggled to carry out the task as there was a lack of urgency and accuracy on the ball.

The Reds’ front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane failed to pose a threat and not a single shot on target was registered.

Lorenzo Insigne secured all three points for the Italian side, who stifled Liverpool’s threat in attack and midfield.

It has led many fans to question the creative options that the club currently have in the middle of the park.

Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who made a cameo appearance on Wednesday night, was linked with a move to Anfield in 2016, according to Goal.

The report claims that Liverpool ended up signing Georginio Wijnaldum instead as the price for Zielinski while at Udinese was rising.

The midfielder has been at Napoli for the past two years and has made 103 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals and creating 10 assists.

This season he has netted twice in nine outings, but would he add quality to Klopp’s team?

HYS: Who should Emery drop if Arsenal sign Bailly?

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal have turned a corner under Unai Emery following a slow start, entering the international break enjoying a run of nine consecutive victories across all competitions.

The Gunners have been consistent in front of goal, scoring at least twice in 10 of their 11 matches this season, but their defence continues to be of concern after just two clean sheets in their opening eight league matches.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”305269″ player=”12034″ title=”Are Emery’s Arsenal Silently Gunning For The Title”]

Emery moved to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos in the summer from Borussia Dortmund and the Greece international has seen become a regular fixture of the first-team, partnering Shkodran Mustafi at the back amidst the continued absence of Laurent Koscielny.

It seems that further changes could be on the cards though as it is suggested Arsenal have their sights on Manchester United outcast Eric Bailly, who earns £75,000-a-week according to Spotrac, which could prove to be a huge blow for Mustafi’s future at the club.

The Germany international has largely been a dreadful signing and has struggled to prove himself at the Emirates Stadium and, if Bailly is signed, may not only find himself out of the side but could also be deemed to be surplus to requirements.

Do you agree Arsenal fans? Who should be dropped if Bailly signs? Let us know your thoughts in our poll below…

Revealed: 75% of West Ham fans don’t want the club to go anywhere near Gary Cahill

[ad_pod ]

The Mirror recently reported that West Ham are considering a making move for Gary Cahill in the January transfer window.

The Chelsea defender’s current contract is set to expire at the end of this season but he is likely to push for a Stamford Bridge exit early, in the winter transfer window, in an effort to secure more regular first team football elsewhere.

The 32-year-old former England international still has plenty to offer in the Premier League, albeit for a side slightly further down the table than where the Blues are used to competing at. The Champions League and two-time Premier League winner’s experience and leadership would certainly prove useful in a number of other top flight squads.

However, Hammers fans don’t seem keen on the idea of welcoming Cahill to the London Stadium in January. When we asked supporters if they’d like to see Manuel Pellegrini chasing the veteran centre-back’s signature, 75% said no. See the full results below.

HYS: Should Mohamed Elneny start for Arsenal vs Sporting?

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal will be looking to extend their winning run to eleven matches in all competitions when they face Sporting on Thursday night in Lisbon. However, the Portuguese giants ought to pose the toughest test that the Gunners have faced so far on their Europa League campaign.

That being said, Unai Emery will likely still seek to rotate his squad for the midweek fixture, which could see some fringe squad players and exciting youngsters get their chance to shine for the first team.

One player who will be desperate to prove his quality to the new manager is Mohamed Elneny. The 26-year-old has made just three appearances this season and is yet to feature at all in the Premier League and was left out of the matchday squad entirely last time out against Leicester City.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”310054″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Fake Madrid & Ross Barkley Emulates… David Ngog”]

The 68-cap Egypt international played fairly regularly for the Gunners under Arsene Wenger, but Emery appears less than impressed with what he’s seen so far from the midfielder.

If Elneny is to force his way back into the first team picture at the Emirates Stadium, then he must impress with what few opportunities he is granted. He has the quality to be a useful option for Emery this season and ought to be given the chance to prove his worth to the new regime before he is forced out of the club.

What do you think, Arsenal fans – should Elneny start against Sporting or should his place go to a younger prospect?

Arsenal fans react to sumptuous Santi Cazorla strike v Almeria

[ad_pod ]

As far as injuries are concerned, former Arsenal man Santi Cazorla has had it about as bad as anyone. The diminutive Spaniard was sidelined for a huge 636 days with a nasty heel injury that refused to heal and eventually became infected, leading to the loss of around eight centimetres of his Achilles tendon and the need for a skin graft.

Doctors believed the 33-year-old should count himself lucky if he was ever able to walk again; getting back on the pitch seemed impossible. However, against all odds the maestro returned to action with Villarreal after completing a free transfer from the Gunners in the summer and was back to his sparkling best against Almeria on Thursday night.

Nicking the ball away from a sliding opponent before cutting inside a second challenge on the left side of the box, the number 19 capitalised on the space afforded to him by the Almeria defence and curled an inch-perfect effort into the top right corner with his right foot to equalise in the 66th minute.

Arsenal fans were pleased to see that their former star has still got the skills that made him a firm fan favourite at the Emirates, as they reacted on Twitter.

Newcastle fans doubt Nicolas Tagliafico bid

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Oranje, Newcastle United are preparing to rival Arsenal for the signature of Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico during the January transfer window.

Tagliafico – a 11-time Argentina international – joined Ajax from Independiente in January, and has made 31 appearances for the Dutch club in all competitions.

The 26-year-old’s form has led to suggestions that Arsenal want to sign him, as recently reported by Calciomercato.

It is understood that Newcastle wanted to sign the defender during the summer, but were unable to agree terms with Ajax.

The Magpies are again being linked with a move for the full-back, although it would be fair to say that the club’s supporters are just not buying the transfer report.

It has been a tough start to the season for Newcastle, and the club’s fans do not exactly have a lot of faith in the ownership when it comes to getting deals over the line.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Newcastle supporters can be seen below:

Opinion: West Brom boss Darren Moore should make a January move for George Dobson

According to the Birmingham Mail, West Brom boss Darren Moore has already admitted that preparations are underway to bring new players in during the January transfer window, and the Baggies should look at George Dobson to solve their midfield problem.

What’s the situation?

After their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season, West Brom started their first campaign back in the Championship well and the new front-three of Jay Rodriguez, Dwight Gayle and Harvey Barnes were scoring goals for fun.

Recently though the Baggies have seen their form dip slightly, and Moore’s side now find themselves in seventh place in the table with league leaders Leeds the visitors to the Hawthorns on Saturday.

One of the main problems for Moore has been his central midfield pairing, or specifically who to start alongside Jake Livermore in the middle of the park. Chris Brunt, Gareth Barry and James Morrison have all been tried in the position but all are well into their 30s and struggle to keep up with the pace of the frantic Championship, whilst 20-year-old academy graduate Sam Field is yet to be properly trusted in league games.

A winter move for Dobson from Walsall then could be the best bet to solve the current issue.

Versatility

Dobson began his youth career with Arsenal before moving to West Ham in 2015. From there he spent the 2016/17 season on loan with his current club Walsall, but the now 20-year-old only signed for The Saddlers on a permanent deal after a brief spell with Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”327140″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Leicester Trump Man City Chelsea & Liverpool”]

This term, the young Englishman has played every minute of Walsall’s League One campaign and has even captained the side in 14 out of 17 league games.

Dobson was originally a centre-back too so if the Baggies were to make a move he could cover that left-hand side of the back three, where summer signing Kyle Bartley has struggled.

So, West Brom fans, would you like to see Moore make a move for Dobson in January or would you prefer someone that’s tried and tested to be signed? Have your say by voting in the poll below.

Match Preview: England vs Croatia

[ad_pod ]

Both England and Croatia have it all to play for when they meet in their Nations League encounter at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. For either side, victory will mean topping the group and progression to the knockout stages, whilst defeat would lead to relegation.

Can Southgate’s boys triumph or will it be another case of so near yet so far for England? We will find out the answer to that on Sunday, but before then, here’s everything you need to know ahead of this weekend’s winner-takes-all clash at Wembley…

What History Tells Us

England’s recent history with Croatia isn’t pretty. In their last Nations League meeting, the sides played out a dull, behind-closed-doors 0-0 draw. Before that, Croatia were the architects of the Three Lions’ heartbreak when they eliminated Gareth Southgate’s side in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Back in 2007, it was the Balkan nation who ended England’s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008. Croatia’s victory then, now over a decade ago, led to Steve McClaren’s dismissal from his post as England manager.

Victory for England on Sunday would provide a measure of revenge and would also indicate that their wonderful World Cup campaign was no flash in the pan.

Battle of the Strikers

Whilst Croatia have a most enviable midfield contingent, England can boast having one of the finest goalscorers in world football amongst their ranks. The Three Lions’ captain and talismanic No. 9, Harry Kane, won the Golden Boot in Russia but could not put Croatia to the sword then.

Kane will want to set the record straight on Sunday and will be comfortable with the knowledge that much of England’s attacking hopes rest upon his shoulders.

However, the Spurs striker hasn’t found the back of the net for his country in his last seven games, last netting in the World Cup round of 16 triumph over Colombia.

Check out the harsh words the Playmaker FC squad had to say about Wayne Rooney’s England career in the video above…

Andrej Kramaric, meanwhile, boasts a far inferior career strike rate to Kane’s, but is currently in blistering form. At club level, the 27-year-old has already racked up six goals for Hoffenheim this season. On the international stage, he produced a fine finish to set Croatia on their way to a hard-fought win over Spain last time out.

Southgate will ensure his players are well aware of the threat that Kramaric poses, whilst he’ll also be hoping that Kane rediscovers his shooting boots this weekend.

Team News

Southgate is likely to rotate heavily following Thursday night’s friendly victory over the USA. Obviously, Wayne Rooney has withdrawn from the squad following his farewell fixture. Meanwhile, Spurs’ Kieran Trippier and Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck have also been ruled out through injury.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will retain his starting berth between the sticks, but ahead of him there’s likely to be a complete change around of the back four. Though, Leicester’s Ben Chilwell and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold – who produced a man of the match display against the USA – may feel they have done enough in recent fixtures to earn an extended run in their respective full-back positions.

Soccer Football – UEFA Nations League – League A – Group 4 – Croatia v England – Stadion HNK Rijeka, Rijeka, Croatia – October 12, 2018 England’s Ross Barkley reacts Action Images via Reuters/Carl Recine

One surprise inclusion in the starting XI could be Ross Barkley, who has impressed recently for Chelsea and would add dynamism and forward thrust to England’s midfield.

Given that this is a must-win game, Southgate has to be positive, which may well allow for exciting youngster Jadon Sancho to be introduced from the bench if England find themselves in need of a game-changer.

Croatia arrive in England with a vastly experienced squad – Luka Modric alone has amassed far more caps than England’s two most senior current stars (Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling) combined.

However, the recent retirement of Mario Mandzukic has left them lacking their second highest all-time goalscorer. In spite of the attacking quality of Ivan Perisic, Ante Rebic and Kramaric, the Juventus veteran remains a major miss.

They are, of course, supremely strong in the middle of the park though. In Modric, Rakitic, Marcelo Brozovic and Mateo Kovacic (likely to start on the bench), Croatia boast an embarrassment of midfield riches, any one of which has the quality to dominate a game and carve out numerous goalscoring opportunities for the visitors.

HYS: Who should start up front for Chelsea vs Tottenham?

[ad_pod ]

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri will have a big decision to make ahead of the trip to Tottenham on Saturday evening, but first we want to know who you think should start the game up front for the Blues.

Alvaro Morata has been Sarri’s main man so far this year, and his record of six goals in 16 games throughout all competitions represents a reasonable return for his efforts.

The 26-year-old has been regularly questioned during his time at Stamford Bridge though and he missed an open goal in Spain’s international friendly with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday that won’t have done his confidence any good.

Morata’s competition at Chelsea Olivier Giroud fared slightly better on international duty though and he should be the one who gets the nod against Spurs.

The 32-year-old started both of France’s games against the Netherlands and Uruguay, scoring his 32nd international goal from the penalty spot against the latter.

Giroud also brings in the Chelsea wingers better than Morata and is able to hold the ball up, something that could be crucial if the Blues are under pressure from their London rivals and are looking to their front man to haul them up the pitch.

So, Chelsea fans, who do you think should start on Saturday? Have your say by voting in the poll below.
