Liverpool fans heap praise on Alisson in PSG defeat

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been giving their verdict on Wednesday’s defeat in Paris, and they’re delighted with the form of Alisson Becker.

Liverpool were quite simply swept aside in the first half of Wednesday’s clash against PSG, as the French champions’ pace and skill stunned Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds’ midfield were just not in the game, and even the colossal Virgil van Dijk seemed off the boil.

Alisson was the game’s silver lining though, as the Brazilian international kept the Reds in the match with some stunning saves.

The big-money summer signing was particularly unfortunate on the second goal, as he made a good low save to deny Edinson Cavani from close range, but could only watch as his defenders allowed Neymar to tap home the rebound.

The Reds have been crying out for a top quality goalkeeper for years, and the long-awaited move is looking like a stroke of genius from Klopp.

Rangers fans delighted with McAuley performance vs Livingston

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Rangers fans have been reacting to their comfortable win over Livingston, and they are delighted with the form of Gareth McAuley.

Rangers continued to keep pace with arch-rivals Celtic on Saturday, winning 3-0 at Ibrox courtesy of goals from Daniel Candeias, Alfredo Morelos and Scott Arfield.

Candeias, Morelos and Ryan Jack were all superb, but McAuley might just have been the pick of the bunch.

The 38-year-old was the final piece of Steven Gerrard’s defensive puzzle this summer, as the gaffer completely overhauled the backline.

The rest of the centre-backs had gone off the boil before the international break, so McAuley’s return to fitness has come at the perfect time.

The 79-cap Northern Ireland international was a fan favourite at West Brom, and Rangers fans are already feeling the same way.

Crystal Palace and Welbeck is a perfect match

According to The Times, Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck will leave the club at the end of the season after it was announced that he would not be given a new contract.

This is another high-profile player, alongside Aaron Ramsey, who will be leaving The Gunners at the end of the campaign.

The England striker is currently nursing a broken ankle, but the club hope that he will be able to return before the end of the season. It is expected that there will be a huge host of clubs that will be champing at the bit to sign the former Man United man.

The one club that should try their hardest to secure the signature of Welbeck is Crystal Palace, who, if this season is anything to go buy, are crying out for a striker. The Eagles have such a dearth in quality in this department that manager Roy Hodgson has primarily relied on wingers Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend to play up front.

With Jordan Ayew potentially returning to parent club Swansea at the end of the season, Christian Benteke’s eternally poor form, and the lack of chances for Alexander Sørloth, a move for Welbeck seems like a perfect move for The Eagles.

Welbeck is a natural goalscorer, who can score in a wide range of ways. In the middle of Zaha and Townsend, this could be a brilliant partnership that could really propel Crystal Palace to the top half of the Premier League.

Moreover, this would surely please Welbeck, who has struggled for game time at both Man United and Arsenal. Admittedly, this has been down to injuries, but the most starts in the league that the England forward has made since arriving at The Emirates is only 18. If Hodgson had it his way, he would have Welbeck playing every minute next season.

Pulis must have a plan up his sleeve with interest in star duo

According to The Bristol Post, Middlesbrough are willing to listen to offers for forwards Britt Assombalonga and Martin Braithwaite.

This would have been a strange rumour at the beginning of the season, as the duo were playing fantastically for Boro. However, as the season has progressed, the Congolese and Danish forwards have had to settle for more and more bench appearances.

Between them, they both have nine goals in the Championship this season, but four of Assombalonga’s six were scored in August and September, while all three of Braithwaite’s were scored in August.

The Dane’s form seemed to drop at the end of the August transfer window, as he clearly wanted a move away. Once that did not come to fruition, his relationship with manager Tony Pulis may have soured.

Fortunately for the Welshman, the form of Jordan Hugill has meant that he has had other options up front, but this still remains one glaring weakness for Middlesbrough. In fact, despite being sixth in the league, only four teams have scored fewer goals than Boro this season, which is something that Pulis will want to address in his pursuit for promotion.

However, the last thing that supporters would want to see is a number of their current strikers looking close to leaving. All that they can hope is that Middlesbrough have some players lined up to replace them. The main concern is seeing how many forwards the club will need to sign. With two stars possibly on the way out, and an attack that is severely underperforming, Pulis must have a plan up his sleeve.

Dominic Solanke signing would ensure Celtic win the title

Celtic will be in the market for a new striker during the upcoming January transfer window.

Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the Hoops would look to ease the goalscoring burden currently on the shoulders of Odsonne Edouard. The former PSG man has been hugely impressive since making his move to Celtic Park permanent in the summer but remains the only recognised striker at the club. With Leigh Griffiths out for the foreseeable future due to personal problems, an injury to Edouard could ruin Celtic’s season.

The January transfer window is just around the corner giving the Northern Irishman the perfect opportunity to add to his forward line.

A perfect addition to his squad would be Liverpool outcast – Dominic Solanke. Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, the youngster progressed through the youth ranks at Chelsea and was tipped for a bright future at the club. After impressing on loan with Vitesse, Solanke was expected to break through to the first-team but was never given a chance to impress and instead joined Liverpool on a free transfer last summer.

Solanke made plenty of appearances from the bench under Jurgen Klopp, scoring once in the Premier League. However, with Liverpool strengthening heavily in the summer and Daniel Sturridge enjoying a revitalised role as a super sub, the England U21 international has slipped down the pecking order. The youngster failed to even make the bench during Liverpool’s recent victory over Manchester United – Klopp will surely be looking to loan the forward out to get regular game time under his belt after watching Harry Wilson thrive at Derby County.

A tall, powerful forward – the 21-year-old would be the perfect fit for Rodgers’ system at Parkhead. Strong in the air but also great on the ball, Solanke would be a nightmare for Scottish defences. Due to the lack of appearances so far, the forward will be desperate to get playing again and will be hungry for goals.

Returning to his former club in the New Year could prove to be a wise decision from Rodgers.

Celtic fans, thoughts?

The Chalkboard: Emery must start Maitland-Niles ahead of Lichtsteiner vs Liverpool to stop Mane

Unai Emery must see the risk in playing Stephan Lichtsteiner against Liverpool, and turn to Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the Gunners’ hour of need.

On the chalkboard

Lichtsteiner’s arrival at the Emirates in the summer was never seen as a long-term move, with the former Juventus defender 34, but rather to bring experienced cover to the right-back spot.

Hector Bellerin’s calf strain sustained in Arsenal’s defeat to Southampton then presented the Swiss international with a chance to feature regularly, having been resigned to a substitute and rotation role since making his debut as Maitland-Niles’ replacement in defeat to Manchester City.

Wednesday’s draw at the Amex was Lichtsteiner’s fourth start in the Premier League, and he should not make it five come Saturday when his side faces Liverpool at Anfield.

Check out the video below for Emma Conybeare’s rundown of which clubs need what in the January transfer window…

At fault for the equaliser

While Lichtsteiner has shown his defensive qualities at times, the right-back’s attempted interception of Brighton’s clearance took the pace off the ball and presented Jurgen Locadia with an opening to score, showing the key areas of decision making he lacks.

Had the 34-year-old allowed the clearance to sail over his head, Bernd Leno would have stood a better chance of meeting the ball prior to any Brighton player, and the Seagulls would not have dragged a foot into the game.

In the end, the Gunners could not find the net again and were forced to settle for a point and remained fifth, falling two-points behind Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.

Starting Maitland-Niles at Anfield

If Lichtsteiner were to repeat his midweek performance at Anfield, Sadio Mane would have a field day, and the current unbeaten leaders would continue their assault on a first Premier League crown.

Maitland-Niles may present a more attacking focused option, with the versatile 21-year-old a natural midfielder, but the academy graduate is the more capable of the pair to restrain Mane’s impact on the game by keeping pace with the Senegal international.

Emery’s recent obsession with three defensive midfielders in Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi will also provide the needed cover when Maitland-Niles looks to push on and support the attacks, with one or more dropping in alongside the centre-backs.

It can be deemed a risk starting the England youth international in a game as big as this, especially after how out of his depth he looked in the Carabao Cup defeat to Spurs, but he has since bounced back to look closer to his best and coped well against Riyad Mahrez and co prior to suffering a broken leg against Man City on the opening day.

Who should Emery start on Saturday? Let us know in the poll below…

Spurs should use Monaco’s Mousa Dembele interest to sign Youri Tielemans

According to Le 10Sport, AS Monaco are interested in Spurs’ Mousa Dembele, with the Belgian’s contract expiring in the summer – the Lilywhites should use this to their advantage by moving for Youri Tielemans.

What’s the word?

Well, French publication Le 10Sport has reported that Monaco have enquired as to the Belgian’s situation at White Hart Lane as he falls down the pecking order and sustains a string of injuries this season.

The former Fulham man has made just ten Premier League appearances this season despite being a mainstay in the lineup since his arrival in 2012 and, in November, suffered an ankle injury that will ensure he remains on the sidelines until the new year.

Spurs have been apparently keen to find a long-term replacement for the 31-year-old, whose deal with the North London club runs out at the end of the season, as he is clearly beginning to lose his legs – Mauricio Pochettino and co. are reportedly targeting Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele, but should use Les Monégasques boss Thierry Henry’s interest in Dembele to tempt the talented Tielemans to the club as Ndombele may prove far too pricey.

Eriksen replacement?

Tielemans has been at the Stade Louis II since summer 2017 when he completed a switch from Anderlecht and was billed as one of the top, young European stars. Manchester City narrowly missed out on bringing him to the Premier League as he opted for France instead – Spurs should look to finally bring the 21-year-old across the channel.

The midfielder is renowned for his passing and shooting ability but can chip in on the back foot, too, as he completes 2.1 tackles per game according to WhoScored.

Tielemans has bagged four goals this season and is equally adept with either foot, making him a threat in all areas of the pitch and highly unpredictable – similar to Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen.

As stated by Pochettino, the Dane’s future at the club is ‘dynamic’ – like Dembele, his contract also runs down in June and there will surely be a host of top sides keen to acquire his services should a new deal fail to be struck – Tielemans could be the player to lessen the blow of losing Dembele and Eriksen in one.

Spurs fans, would you like to see a move for Youri Tielemans go through? Let us know by voting in the poll below…

Celtic fans blast Rodgers’ team selection at Ibrox

Loads of Celtic fans have been giving their verdict on the loss at Ibrox, and there’s one decision from Brendan Rodgers that they just can’t wrap their heads around.

The Bhoys surrendered their three point lead at the top of the table on Saturday, now leading Rangers only on goal difference after the 1-0 defeat.

Ryan Jack scored the decisive goal in a horrifically one-sided first half, with Craig Gordon forced to make several good saves just to keep the Bhoys in the game.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below...

While nearly every individual performance was below par, it’s a decision from Rodgers that fans are really fuming at, as the boss opted to play Callum McGregor at left back.

The 25 year-old has probably been Celtic’s best midfielder this season, and the move to left back was a total disaster.

It meant the visitors had absolutely no control or creativity in the middle of the park, where Olivier Ntcham and Scott Brown were both woeful.

How Man City bossed Liverpool’s midfield and exposed weak links to win Premier League epic

Each week our friends at Total Football Analysis Magazine provide us with in-depth tactical analysis. Today, TFA Lead Analyst Lee Scott looks back at Thursday night’s big clash at the Etihad Stadium and explains exactly how Man City were able to beat Liverpool.

Despite being relatively early in the season this was billed as the biggest game domestically in months. Over the Christmas period, Liverpool had opened up a seven-point advantage over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League and a win in this match away to City would see Liverpool go ten points clear of the champions entering the second half of the season.

This was not the first time that these two sides have met this season, the earlier encounter at Anfield saw the two sides play out a tactical 0-0 draw, an encounter which lacked much of the attacking creativity that we have come to expect from these sides and their respective coaches.

This time though there was a definite sense that Manchester City could not afford to drop points from this match. Their coach, Pep Guardiola, is known for his obsessive tactical preparation for big games although in recent seasons he has found Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp difficult to break down.

There were many questions in terms of team shape and selection prior to this match, particularly around Liverpool. In recent weeks we have seen a shift in their tactical structure away from the more traditional 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 with a double pivot in the midfield. With City likely to line up in their 4-3-3 shape as normal, however, it was interesting pre-match to note the speculation that Liverpool would do the same to match-up with them.

In the end, City came away with the positive result that they needed, how they achieved this deserves closer examination though.

Team News

The first thing of note was that Klopp decided to move away from the 4-2-3-1 that has been so successful for him over the last few weeks. He switched to the more commonly used 4-3-3 in order to match systems with Manchester City.

The main difference in this switch of system saw a change to the midfield configuration. In previous weeks Fabinho and Giorginio Wijnaldum had formed an extremely effective double pivot at the base of the midfield. This created the base for Liverpool’s attacking phase and shielded the defence effectively in the defensive phase. In this match, we saw the return of Jordan Henderson playing as the single pivot with James Milner and Giorginio Wijnaldum ahead of him. As the match progressed the issues with this midfield three became hugely apparent.

Who has the loudest fans in Europe? PSG certainly state their claim in the video below…

With Roberto Firmino moved back to his more common striking position we also saw Mohamed Salah shifted across to the right-hand side of the attack with Sadio Mane providing balance on the left.

The most striking piece of team news from Manchester City was the introduction of the immensely talented Vincent Kompany in the defensive line. There was some speculation before the match that this would see a back three from City but instead, Aymeric Laporte was deployed as a traditional left-back, from where he could man mark Salah.

In the midfield, the return of Fernandinho at the base of the midfield would make a significant impact on the match.

Controlling the centre

It is one of the oldest and most widely understood tactical concepts of football but controlling the centre of the field is essential when controlling a match. Overloads and underloads in key central areas can provide key pressure points on your opposition which can lead to breakthroughs in possession.

Despite neither side having a numerical advantage in the 3v3 in the centre of the field we still saw City create positional and qualitative advantages by using intelligent movement from their two more advanced central midfielders. They had clearly defined roles for the midfield players with Fernandinho providing the base and controlling the space while Bernardo Silva and David Silva dropped in and pushed out of pockets of space across the central areas. This approach created passing angles that allowed City to progress the ball through the centre relatively comfortably.

The Liverpool midfield struggled to cope with the vertical movement from the two City central midfielders for the entire game. Here Liverpool were relatively well set defensively but as the ball was circulated from Kompany to John Stones across the defensive line it was comfortably moved through Fernandinho at the base of the midfield to Bernardo Silva, who had dropped away from the marking Liverpool midfielder to receive in space.

The same could be seen from the above situation that occurred on the opposite side of the field. Again the phase that I chose to highlight started with Kompany in possession on the defensive line. This time Liverpool were better orientated to press the ball and the circulation across the defensive line was cut off. David Silva made a sharp move towards the ball to create separation from his marker. As soon as the ball was moved vertically to David Silva, he bounced the ball out to Sane wide on the left.

As David Silva made his move to drop off he immediately affected the marking Liverpool player – as that player moved to shadow the run he created a space in the defensive structure that could be exploited by City. In playing the ball immediately to the outside, City created isolation against the Liverpool right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold. This, in turn, allowed Leroy Sane the flexibility to attack the inside or outside of the full-back.

Isolating and overloading the weak link

With Joe Gomez still out injured Klopp has turned to the Croatian international Dejan Lovren to partner the excellent Virgil van Dijk in the centre of the backline. Before Thursday, this change hadn’t been overly noticeable, until they came up against a world-class opponent in Manchester City.

City used clever positioning from their forward, Sergio Aguero, to pin Van Dijk in place while passing combinations and movement from their wide forwards and advanced central midfielders isolated and overloaded Lovren.

With the ball possessed here by Laporte on the left-hand side, we saw aLiverpool side that were relatively well set defensively. The orientation of the ball dictated the type of movements from City in the final third of the field. As Leroy Sane maked a vertical run on the outside of Lovren, we saw David Silva move to occupy that space. This movement isolatedLovren and allowed the ball to be played around the outside to meet the run of Sane.

Initially, in the move Aguero pinned Van Dijk in place but as the run and pass was made he made an angled burst to attack the blind side of Lovren in the penalty area.

We saw a similar movement pattern here although on this occasion the starting point of the ball was with Raheem Sterling on the right-hand side. City have the capacity to play quick and short passing combinations in this area to play through the lines, but they mixed this up with direct passing to switch the play to an area in which they had isolated an opposing player.

As the ball was switched in this area out to the left-hand side, Alexander-Arnold moved out to engage the ball, while the advanced central midfielder on that side, David Silva, moved vertically to attack the space outside of Lovren. Once again this run is  accessed by a vertical pass played around the corner. As the ball was played through to Silva, Aguero once again made the diagonal run from his position on Van Dijk to attack the blind side of Lovren in the penalty area.

With two relatively simple passes, City isolated and overloaded Dejan Lovren to create a goalscoring opportunity.

Conclusion

Over the course of the 90 minutes, there was little to choose from between these two sides. Liverpool were perhaps less potent in the attacking phase than they have been recently but they were forced to think and adapt so much when defending that playing quickly in transition became more difficult.

Manchester City were clearly prepared to execute certain mechanisms within their attacking phase and they did so superbly. The timing and use of overloading runs to isolate Dejan Lovren gave the Liverpool defensive structure issues throughout the match.

For the neutrals, this was a great game and a great result – the title race is very much still alive.

Spurs line up Malcom bid to replace crocked Kane

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham are lining up a loan move for Barcelona flop Malcom, per the Daily Star.

Spurs are scrambling to find a replacement to Harry Kane, who sustained an injury against Manchester United, and have identified the Barca winger as a potential acquisition.

What’s the word?

Kane sustained an ankle injury in the 1-0 loss to United, but has yet to have the issue assessed, due to swelling around the area.

There are reportedly fears that he has sustained ligament damage, and with Son Heung-Min on international duty and Mauricio Pochettino left with Fernando Llorente as his only fit senior striker Spurs are searching for forward reinforcements.

Malcom has been on Spurs’ radar before, with the club scouting him prior to his move from Bordeaux to the Camp Nou.

Barcelona eventually paid £36.5million for the Brazilian, but he has struggled to make a significant impact in Spain.

Malcom has made just five appearances this season in La Liga, and Spurs are now considering a loan bid to take the 21-year-old this month.

Levy unlikely to spend

Daniel Levy is seemingly reticent to spend big money in January, having failed to add a single player to Tottenham’s squad in the summer.

A loan move is not free, of course, with Spurs likely to have to subsidise Malcom’s wages.

But the departure of Mousa Dembele to China is set to free up some funds, and a move for the Brazilian is a logical, if risky, one.

CheekySport’s Joel claims Spurs badly need to invest in January after not having “the balls” to beat Arsenal. Check out his uncensored opinion in the video below…

Malcom has yet to prove himself in Spain and there is no way of knowing how he would adapt to Premier League football.

But the deal may be on Levy’s radar, with the club able to lure a marquee signing to London at a minimal cost.

Plus, it would do the world of good to Pochettino, who is desperate for forward options, particularly if Kane is ruled out for a significant period of time.
