Leeds: Phil Hay makes Ayling, Bamford and Firpo claim

Reliable Leeds United reporter Phil Hay thinks Luke Ayling, Patrick Bamford and Junior Firpo all have a chance of featuring against Norwich City this weekend.

The Lowdown: Injured trio

Marcelo Bielsa has been without a number of key players this season, with the Whites flirting above the relegation zone as a result.

Bamford and Ayling have missed Leeds’ last six in all competitions with ankle and knee issues respectively, whereas Firpo hasn’t been seen for the last three.

However, ahead of the trip to Carrow Road on Sunday, Hay believes all three could feature in some capacity following Bielsa’s comments last week.

The Latest: Hay’s tweet

Hay replied to a Whites fan on Twitter on Wednesday morning who asked about Bamford’s situation.

The Athletic reporter claimed that after Bielsa admitted Ayling and Bamford would be missing for Wolves and Arsenal, the media took that as ‘they had a chance of Norwich’ – a big six-word update.

The same goes for Firpo, as Hay mentioned.

“Bielsa said last week that Bamford and Ayling would miss Wolves/Arsenal. We took that to mean that they had a chance of Norwich. Same with Firpo.”

Hay’s tweet was liked just 60 times as of Thursday lunchtime – 0.028% of his 211,000 followers, so it seems to have gone under the radar due to it being a reply in a thread rather than a regular post.

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Bielsa already has a relatively small Leeds squad when everyone is available, so being without three players for a period of time, especially the likes of Bamford, Ayling and Firpo, was always going to make life difficult.

Hopefully, Hay’s interpretation regarding the trio will prove accurate, and that they can all feature in some capacity on Sunday.

Even if it is a place on the bench, it may give Leeds a boost they need in their attempts to gain a second league win.

Meeting over 2011 WC hosting dispute postponed

A meeting between the ICC and the 2011 World Cup hosts has been pushed to June 15 in London

Cricinfo staff28-May-2009A meeting between the ICC and the 2011 World Cup hosts that was scheduled for June 3 in Dubai has been pushed to June 15 in London. It had been called to try and reach an out-of-court settlement over the dispute that had Pakistan’s share of matches from the tournament taken away over security concerns. The ICC said the meeting was postponed to ensure the availability of all those taking part. Besides representatives from the four countries originally awarded hosting rights – Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan – ICC president David Morgan and chief executive Haroon Lorgat will also attend the meeting, while vice-president Sharad Pawar will take part by telephone.Earlier in the month, the PCB had issued a legal notice to the ICC after the world body had decided to exclude Pakistan from hosting the World Cup, calling the decision to do so discriminatory and “legally flawed”. The meeting is the first step to resolve the impasse outside of a courtroom.

Broja returns to Southampton training

With their 1-0 Premier League win over Watford at the weekend behind them, Southampton now have a Friday night clash against Aston Villa to deal with.

So far this season, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have managed to score nine league goals in their opening ten games, leaving just Norwich City (3) having scored fewer goals in this campaign.

With this in mind and the clash against Villa on the horizon, the Saints have fortunately been handed an injury boost that could put them in a good position to secure a win against Dean Smith’s side.

What’s the news?

It has recently been revealed that Saints striker Armando Broja has returned to first-team training after missing the clash at Watford with an ankle injury.

Prior to the win at Vicarage Road, Broja, who is on loan with the Saints from fellow Premier League side Chelsea, managed to score a goal in each of his two previous league games against Leeds United and Burnley, proving how much of a big boost this is for the Saints and why we feel Hasenhuttl will be thrilled to have the striker potentially back in contention for the match against Villa.

Given how Villa have lost their four previous league games, conceding 12 goals in the process, we feel that if Broja is fit enough to start then he definitely should be in the Saint’s starting XI to see if he can continue where he left off before picking up his ankle injury. If he does so, it would compile even more misery on the struggling Midlands club.

If Hasenhuttl starts him, we feel that the Austrian will have a tough decision to make considering how Che Adams scored the winning goal against Watford and the fact that Adam Armstrong managed to assist that very strike, earning himself an overall match rating of 7/10 according to SofaScore.

However, given how the talented striker is only on loan at the south coast club for the season, we feel that it would be best if Hasenhuttl got as many minutes out of him as possible before he returns to Chelsea in the summer. That said, if he starts against Villa and doesn’t impress, Hasenhuttl should do what’s best for the whole team rather than just sticking with Broja for the time being.

'Teams fear us' – Gayle

Through two Tests, three one-day internationals and a Twenty20 practice match, West Indies had played the role of Peter McNeeley to England’s Mike Tyson

Through two Tests, three one-day internationals and a Twenty20 practice match, West Indies had played the role of Peter McNeeley to England’s Mike Tyson. Each crushing bodyblow took with it confidence and reputation, and if John Dyson had at his disposal a white towel, it would presumably have sailed over the ropes sometime around the third ODI.Then came the shot at redemption. Already million-dollar babies after their Stanford payday, West Indies positioned themselves for a shot at a recognised belt with impressive World Twenty20 victories over tournament heavyweights India and Australia, and stoic defeats to title contenders Sri Lanka and South Africa. Standing in their way were the bruisers of England. Rocky films should pine for such a plot.In the end, as with all good rags-to-riches tales, victory was both sweet and hard-earned. All but written off after their disastrous summer campaign – which, for good measure, included one final nine-wicket thumping to England in a pre-tournament 20-over warm-up – the Windies defied critics and opponents alike to qualify for the World Twenty20 semi-finals with a nerve-shredding victory over their recent conquerers. After losing five early wickets in a rain-reduced run-chase – each a standing-eight count of its own – it was left to Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan to guide West Indies past England’s revised target of 80 with a composed stand of 37 from 20 balls. The veteran duo have been called upon to dig the Windies out of many a jam over the years, but their recent Twenty20 form – 71 runs in a combined eight matches prior to Monday – made this pursuit that little less predictable, that little more special.”After the disaster of the tour here in England we wanted to give the supporters something to cheer about,” Chris Gayle said. “It was good to see them in the stands cheering and jumping. We’re trying to entertain and at the same time we’re trying to get a few victories under our belts. We looked really happy and we’re just trying to finish off on a high. I’m really proud of the guys and the way they’ve gone about it right through the tournament. It’s been a long, hard summer for us and to be in the semi-finals is brilliant.”The signs looked ominous for West Indies when, barely a minute before the coin toss, Fidel Edwards was struck down with back pain while warming up. Those concerns were compounded when Ravi Bopara and Kevin Pietersen combined for a spirited second-wicket stand of 56, raising the expectations and volume of The Oval faithful.Momentum began to lurch back the Windies’ way when Lendl Simmons, fast emerging as a true Twenty20 trump in this tournament, claimed the vital wicket of Pietersen, and further still when Dwayne Bravo accounted for Owais Shah and Paul Collingwood. But the true shift in power came with the news that England’s competitive total of 161 for 6 had been reduced to a far more accessible Duckworth-Lewis target of 80 from nine overs. Reckless batting could hardly be punished with a full ten wickets in hand.”As I was looking at the game, it was one big over away from getting to a run-a-ball,” Sarwan said. “We were calm and I had the support of Shiv at the next end. We both are experienced players and we’ve experienced situations like this before. It wasn’t really too hard.”The bad vibes of a summer of discontent were dispelled to the dark recesses of the mind when the Windies stormed the field en masse following Sarwan’s match-winning drive to the boundary. The images were reminiscent of those that accompanied West Indies stunning Champions Trophy victory at this very ground in 2004, and Gayle believes his rejuvinated team can emulate that feat in the World Twenty20 finals”To be honest with you, a lot of teams fear us,” he said. “We were written off from the start of the tournament and we’re actually in the semi-final. If you look at each and everyone of our players and we’re actually winners.”

3 worst Celtic players vs Dundee

Celtic put in an impressive display to dispatch Dundee on Sunday lunchtime, with Ange Postecoglou’s side running out 4-2 winners.

The Hoops opened the scoring early on with Jota’s fifth goal for the club, with Kyogo Furuhashi doubling the lead shortly after. Danny Mullen then pulled one back for the hosts, but Jota and Furuhashi were at it again following the interval to put the game beyond reach and seal another three points.

However, not every player had an afternoon to remember, as The Transfer Tavern looks into the three worst-rated outfield starters by statistical specialists SofaScore following the win at Dens Park.

Josip Juranovic – 6.4/10

While Anthony Ralston starred at right-back, as he was given a 7.8 rating only bettered by Jota, Furuhashi and David Turnbull, Juranovic was actually the Hoops’ worst-rated performer according to SofaScore. He lost possession on 12 occasions and lost his only duel.

The summer signing also failed to put in a successful cross and didn’t contribute defensively with any tackles and only one clearance.

Cameron Carter-Vickers – 6.5/10

Next up is another defensive summer arrival in Carter-Vickers. The USA international has been an ever-present figure since moving to Scotland but also struggled in what was a brilliant attacking display from the Hoops, scoring four goals and having 24 shots in total.

He finished with a rating of 6.5/10, giving the ball away seven times, losing four duels and failing to make a tackle or interception throughout.

Callum McGregor – 6.7/10

Club captain McGregor is the last of Celtic’s three strugglers. The central midfielder ended with a score of 6.7/10, losing three of his four duels and giving up possession seven times.

He also made just one tackle in the middle of the park and committed two fouls.

O Peixe aposta em Vanderlei; Victor Ferraz, Lucas Veríssimo, Gustavo Henrique e Zeca; Renato, Alison e Lucas Lima; Bruno Henrique, Copete e Ricardo Oliveira.

Martin named in Champions Trophy probables

Chris Martin has been named in the Champions Trophy probables squad despite not having played a limited-overs game since February 2008
