Everton should stay clear of Calum Chambers

Everton have been linked with a transfer move for Arsenal defender Calum Chambers as the winter window fast approaches.

What’s the story?

According to reports in the national papers, the Toffees are exploring the possibility of signing the 26-year-old for a reduced fee as he enters the final months of his current contract in north London.

Everton were heavily linked with a move for Chambers’ teammate Ainsley Maitland-Niles over the summer before that move collapsed, and now Rafa Benitez could be forced to change targets.

The report states that: “Everton have reportedly identified Calum Chambers as their back-up plan in January should they fail in pursuit of his Arsenal team-mate Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

“Rafael Benitez is looking to bolster Everton in the right back position and he is said to have identified two players at Arsenal that find themselves on the periphery. “

It goes on to claim that the preferred option for the Goodison Park hierarchy remains a short-term loan deal for Maitland-Niles with the option of a permanent move next year, but that the Gunners could allow Chambers to leave for as little as £5 million in January.

He could be Everton’s new Mason Holgate

Despite signing for Arsenal back in 2014 as a highly-promising youngster from boyhood side Southampton, Chambers has only made 121 appearances for the capital club in all competitions.

The £50,000-per-week dud has shown glimpses of his true potential – particularly during an impressive loan spell at Fulham – although he’s failed to produce quality performances on a consistent basis throughout his career.

After a particularly poor showing against Chelsea back in 2018, pundit Tony Cascarino labelled him an “accident waiting to happen,” and he’s done little to dispel that notion since.

“Calum Chambers joined Arsenal from Southampton more than three years ago and also won the first of his three England full caps about that time, as a 19-year-old, yet he still looks like a kid who has only just been given his chance,” said Cascarino.

“Last night, the 22-year-old central defender was nervous on the ball and lacking concentration – he was an accident waiting to happen.”

Therefore, Benitez should carefully consider making an approach for Chambers over the coming months, with the former England international bearing a striking resemblance to current Everton outsider Mason Holgate.

Both players showed promise in their youth deputising at right-back and centre-back, yet both have perhaps become a jack of all trades and masters of none.

Last season, for instance, Holgate became rather error-prone in his duties at Goodison Park.

Replacing an instrumental figure such as Seamus Coleman will be a big job for any new arrival, and it’s unlikely that Chambers will be able to pick up where the Irishman left off.

Start to Zimbabwe domestic season delayed

The start of Zimbabwe’s domestic season has been postponed by three weeks to mid-September

Cricinfo staff25-Aug-2009The start of Zimbabwe’s domestic season has been postponed by three weeks to mid-September.The first round of matches in the Logan Cup were due to be played today, but not all the franchises have managed to complete the signing of all their players. Seventeen former players are still in talks but as yet unsigned.Domestic cricket in Zimbabwe has attracted criticism in recent years with concerns over the quality of the competition, but it’s all change for this year’s competitions. In the Logan Cup for example, the principle four-day tournament, each franchise will play 16 matches instead of six, after which they will play a one-day game. And despite this delay, the season will still be beginning several months before its usual condensed three-month period between February and May.Cricinfo understands that the full and revised schedule should be available at the end of the week.

Spurs "serious" about signing PL beast

Tottenham Hotspur could look to raid one of their London arch-rivals in the near future…

What’s the word?

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, Spurs hold a big interest in signing Antonio Rudiger from Chelsea, having attempted to lure him in the past.

“They’re really serious about Rudiger,” the journalist told GIVEMESPORT this week.

Indeed, the Lilywhites spoke to the 49-cap Germany international during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge.

“I was close [to leaving],” the defender said when questioned about his future in March, as relayed by The Express. “There was [a] call also with Mourinho, but this is something at the end of the day that didn’t happen.”

Rudiger has been linked with several of Europe’s elite clubs, including Real Madrid and Bayern Munich as he will soon enter the final six months of his current £100k-per-week deal at Stamford Bridge.

It’s believed that the 28-year-old wants to double his wages, and whilst the Blues want to retain his services, there is no willingness to increase his salary beyond an extra £50k-per-week.

Imagine Rudiger and Romero

Rudiger looked hugely out-of-favour at Chelsea before the arrival of Thomas Tuchel in west London but now he has arguably emerged as one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, so it would be quite a coup if Spurs could snatch his signature from their rivals’ grasp.

He’s still valued at €20m (£18m) by CIES Football Observatory, so it would represent stunning value should they land him for nothing next summer.

The 6 foot 3 colossus has also worked under Antonio Conte before, having registered 45 appearances during the 52-year-old’s reign at Stamford Bridge, so he will know the Italian’s system and methods better than most. He even dubbed his former boss a “very, very good coach” back in 2018.

Rudiger has started 14 of their 15 appearances across the Premier League and Champions League this campaign, whilst he started in the final where they defeated English rivals Man City, emphasising just how crucial he is to Tuchel.

His form under his fellow countryman earned a glowing endorsement from Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand back in August, as he told his podcast (via Metro):

“Look at Rudiger, he’s arguably, since Tuchel has been there [at Chelsea], been the best defender in the Premier League. Him or [Ruben] Dias in that time. He’s been unbelievable, he’s like an animal.”

Regularly, the former Stuttgart and Roma centre-back has been a real thorn in Spurs’ side as he often dominates the north Londoners – he boasts a 70% win rate when facing Tottenham.

One example of this was seen earlier this season. Not only did he score past Hugo Lloris with a deft finish inside the area, but he also earned the second-highest rating on the pitch (8.0) for his defensive masterclass against Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

As per SofaScore, he registered two clearances and two blocks, and won 100% of his aerial duels up against the England talisman.

Therefore, just imagine him alongside Spurs’ summer signing Cristian Romero but in a Lilywhites strip, rather than the rival blue in which many have seen him terrorise opponents over the last few years.

Romero and Rudiger would be a colossal duo in Conte’s back three, so Fabio Paratici and co must do all they can to secure the German ahead of Europe’s elite.

At the same time, they could deal Chelsea a crushing blow, too.

AND in other news, Spurs could sign Conte’s next Hazard in “complete” £22.5m-rated wizard who bossed Pochettino’s PSG…

Ambulantes revenderam copos do Bota ilegalmente no Nilton Santos

Another Ashes scar for Ponting

Peter English presents the plays of the day from the third day of the deciding Test

Peter English at The Oval22-Aug-2009

Ricky Ponting was in the wars as England piled on the runs•Getty Images

Battered, bruised and almost defeated
Things were bad enough for Ricky Ponting before he was clocked in the mouth by a hard Matt Prior drive from the ball before lunch. Australia had bled runs over the previous hour and now Ponting’s spit was red. He left with his team for the break, was treated and on the resumption wore grazes on both lips – and a helmet the next time he was at silly point. Andrew Flintoff came in and received a handshake of congratulation from Ponting, but was soon hurting the captain again when a shot cannoned into Ponting’s behind. He left the field briefly before tea for more mouth work.Nervous start
England’s most testing moment came from the first ball when Peter Siddle thought he had Jonathan Trott caught behind. The ball broke through the surface and leapt at the batsman, brushing his thigh but not his bat. Asad Rauf, who has made some bad decisions in this game, got this one right and England’s day was rosy.Close call
Trott’s left thigh was brushed on 97 when he inside-edged a ball from Ben Hilfenhaus that almost ricocheted into the stumps. By the end of the over he was the 18th Englishman to score a century and he waved his bat like a wand to salute the crowd. His mum was overcome, sitting in the stands crying at her son’s gutsy achievement.Shooting star
Another brief appearance from Flintoff in his last game. He stayed only 18 balls, clipping 22 before holing out to long-on off Marcus North. By then he had swiped North for two leg-side boundaries and pulled Peter Siddle for four in a contender for shot of the day. Nobody was sitting as he left the ground, with the Australian huddle also saluting him.False dawn
Mitchell Johnson’s five-wicket haul at Headingley feels as far away as the South Africa tour after another haphazard display at The Oval. Having stormed through two batsmen on Friday afternoon, Johnson was back to his wayward ways of early in the series, feeding the batsmen with short and wide balls, short and full ones, and actual wides that bounced well over the striker’s head. He got two overs at the start of the day and did not return until after lunch, giving away 38 in nine overs.Breaking the shackles
Andrew Strauss had fought all morning until he broke free against Stuart Clark with two special cover drives for four in consecutive balls. He walked down the pitch to the first one, beating the couple of men parked within a few metres of each other, and the next shot was even firmer, racing to the boundary before the fielders could move. The lead had passed 300 and soon Strauss and Trott had 32 in four overs, accelerating the game away from Australia.Mad mistake
The worst decision belonged to Prior, who picked the wrong man to take a quick single to. Simon Katich has been amazingly sharp in this game, picking up a great catch and a run-out on the second day, and it was silly of Prior to call yes when his push to cover went to Katich’s preferred left side. The direct hit sent him off with 4, providing the Australians with a rare happy moment.
