Spurs join Newcastle in Diego Carlos hunt

Tottenham have joined Newcastle in the race to sign Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, according to The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Newcastle move

Newcastle have been after the Brazilian for a number of weeks and appear to be closing in on the defender nicknamed ‘The Beast’.

Sky Sports revealed on Thursday evening that the Magpies are moving closer to a deal, with all parties ‘hopeful’ of finalising a move.

Carlos has submitted a transfer request and has already agreed personal terms at St James’ Park, but it seems as if Tottenham are making an 11th-hour attempt to dramatically scupper a switch to the north east.

The Latest: Spurs keen

The Daily Mail shared a story on Thursday, revealing that Spurs have joined Newcastle in the race to sign the 28-year-old.

The north Londoners have expressed their interest, with The Sun adding that Tottenham will back Antonio Conte with a £50m raid for Carlos and Adama Traore.

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Carlos is valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, so should he move to north London, he would be Spurs’ highest-valued defender.

Conte could also do with a marquee defensive addition, as he has used left-back Ben Davies in a central role on a regular basis, and he could then offload Japhet Tanganga in the coming days.

Carlos has plenty of experience in La Liga and Ligue 1 and is the 16th-highest valued centre-back in the world, so a move for less than his £40.5m valuation could be an excellent piece of business from Tottenham.

Umar and spinners knock South Africa out

South Africa were knocked out of the World Twenty20 by living up to their reputation of coming up short in crunch matches

South Africa were knocked out of the World Twenty20 by living up to their reputation of coming up short in crunch matches with an inexplicably limp batting display after a Charl Langeveldt masterclass in end-innings bowling had kept Pakistan to a gettable total. The bedrock of the defending champions’ first victory in the Super Eights were Saeed Ajmal’s doosras and a sparkling Umar Akmal cameo, but Pakistan will also thank the redoubtable South African top-order for idling early in the chase.Like in the first-round game against India, South Africa left the onslaught for too late. On a track which didn’t have too many demons, they were just three fours and three twos in the first ten overs from a line-up boasting some of the world’s finest hitters. AB de Villiers responded to the climbing asking-rate with some belated power-hitting, but once he fell attempting an audacious scoop, Pakistan’s bowlers choked the runs again and South Africa went down by 11 runs. There was still hope for South Africa after de Villiers fell, with two of the game’s best finishers, Mark Boucher and Albie Morkel, needing 47 off the final four. But neither could get the ball away against the spinners, and few would have guessed that most of South Africa’s runs at the death would come from Johan Botha. Morkel was silenced by Pakistan’s plan of targeting his leg stump, and his ineffectiveness was highlighted by a dab to backward point for one to a shortish doosra from Ajmal off the first delivery of the final over when 17 was required. But it will be churlish to blame the lower-order, after the top three, each of whom have nearly a decade’s worth of international experience, consumed 43 balls for their 38 runs. Herschelle Gibbs who has been hit-or-miss for a long time now, pottered around before slugging a short ball to midwicket. Graeme Smith’s ordinary tournament ended with a tame miscue to mid-on, and questions about the tempo of Jacques Kallis’ batting will resurface after he poked 22 at just more than a run-a-ball before holing out to long-on.The match was slipping away from South Africa when they were at 71 for 4 after 13, but de Villiers exploded with a four and two sixes in one Abdur Rehman over to keep it alive. The second of those brought up his half-century, and a roar from a pumped-up de Villiers but when his attempted scoop off yet another Ajmal doosra lobbed to the keeper, Pakistan were back in charge. In contrast to the listless batting, South Africa’s bowlers were immaculate at the start to keep Pakistan’s traditionally fragile top-order to 19 for 3, the worst performance in the first six overs in this competition. Exhibit A in the gallery of poor shots was from Salman Butt, who pulled a short and wide delivery that he would have been better off looking to cut. Then the man picked to strengthen the batting, Khalid Latif, chipped to wide mid-on before Mohammad Hafeez’s troubles with the bat continued when he was lbw for 1.The Akmal brothers started the firefighting by taking on the spinners. Roelof van der Merwe was taken apart by a bunch of slog-sweeps and Kamran’s powerful cut off Botha brought four more to double the total in two overs to 46. van der Merwe was clobbered for three straight sixes in five deliveries before Gibbs swooped at backward point to get rid of Kamran, but with Pakistan batting down to No. 8 the game was even at 69 for 4 after 11.The flood of runs continued with arrival of Afridi. Umar wowed the crowd with a paddle-scoop over short fine off the pacy Kallis, and Afridi muscled boundaries over cover and midwicket. The horrors at the start were completely forgotten by the sprinkling of Pakistan fans in the ground after Umar scuttled across the stumps to swing Albie over deep backward square leg and Afridi absolutely hammered a flat six over long-on to take Pakistan to 102 for 4 after 14, with the finisher Abdul Razzaq still to come.Three fours were taken off a Dale Steyn over and Umar was flamboyantly celebrating his half-century after blasting Langeveldt for a straight six on the first delivery of the 17th. Things unraveled swiftly from there, with Umar holing out to long-on and Afridi being bowled by a full delivery from Langeveldt three balls later. There were no more boundaries and Pakistan finished with a whimper, only 16 coming off the final three. However, Pakistan lived up to their billing of being most dangerous when cornered by stubbornly defending the small total to retain an outside chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

-A torcida, mano. E me arrependi também.

Fazendo história aqui, primeiro europeu a ganhar título no Corinthians, fazer gol no Corinthians.

A reportagem pergunta a razão. E Kazim diz:

Leeds battling Man Utd for Boubacar Kamara

Leeds United are one of the teams interested in Boubacar Kamara…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Sky Sports, who have named the Yorkshire giants alongside Premier League rivals Manchester United in the race to sign the Marseille midfielder before the January transfer window deadline on Monday.

The 22-year-old gem is out of contract in the summer, so the coming days are the last chance for the Ligue 1 outfit to earn some sort of fee for him and the Daily Mail believe they will sell for just £10m.

Battle for late bargain

Kamara’s versatility to play in the backline or in midfield makes him a very intriguing prospect and one that could be of huge benefit to Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds.

The 66-year-old head coach has seen his squad decimated with injuries throughout the 2021/22 campaign, particularly in the engine room, where he is currently without star man Kalvin Phillips.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Leeds have not signed someone in the role since January 2018, four years ago, when Adam Forshaw swapped Middlesbrough for Elland Road. Even he has recently picked up an injury, leaving Bielsa even lighter on options.

Kamara is one of Europe’s brightest talents right now, having been dubbed a “phenomenon” by former Olympiens teammate Rolando. “When he started training with us, he was 15 years old. And from day one, I said, no, but this little one is going to be a great player,” he added.

Since making his debut, the young versatile machine has averaged 2.8 long balls, 2.3 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game, putting up some remarkable numbers, via WhoScored.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Whites could well seal an absolute bargain in Kamara in the coming few days, especially at just £10m, which is well within Leeds’ budget.

Bielsa badly needs midfield reinforcements and the fact that the France U21 international can also play in defence makes him a very useful candidate indeed.

If they can seal a late move for him before Monday, then Bielsa would surely be a very happy man.

Yorkshire content to see out quiet draw

Adam Lyth narrowly missed out on a second hundred of the match as Yorkshire and Hampshire played out a turgid final day’s play at the Rose Bowl

27-May-2010
ScorecardAdam Lyth narrowly missed out on a second hundred of the match as Yorkshire and Hampshire played out a turgid final day’s play at the Rose Bowl.Resuming on 152 for 1 after a 16-over delay for rain in the morning session, quick Yorkshire runs were the order of the day if a sparse crowd was to see anything other than a predictable draw. But their progress was pitifully slow, captain Andrew Gale clearly content with mere bonus points and a tepid stalemate as his side added just 28 runs in an hour, for the loss of Anthony McGrath for the addition of just four to his overnight 60.Even the arrival of Jacques Rudolph at the crease could not lift Yorkshire’s scoring rate above a dismal three per over, as the former South African man limped to 28 from 85 balls before being dismissed by Rangana Herath with the first ball of the afternoon session. The only point of interest for the travelling White Rose fans was whether Lyth, imperious all game, could add a second-innings hundred to his marvellous 133 in the first. But even that scant moment of potential jubilation was dashed as Lyth snicked David Balcombe to Neil McKenzie at second slip for a patient 98.The tea interval did not change things as the Tykes continued to bat with dour intentions. Such was the respect shown to Hampshire’s bowlers that even Michael Carberry’s looping part-time off-spin was rendered dangerous enough for the England hopeful to dismiss Andrew Gale for 12.Finally, after reaching 292 for the loss of five second-innings wickets and with James Vince replacing Nic Pothas behind the Hampshire stumps as Pothas threatened to have a bowl himself, the declaration came – to sarcastic applause.Gale’s lack of a killer instinct frustrated a pocket of Yorkshire fans, who felt a demoralised Hampshire were there for the taking. But as the dreary fare continued on the south coast, even the staunchest White Rose fan drifted into indifference. All that was left was for Hampshire’s openers to dully block out the remaining 14 overs – bowled by Adil Rashid and part-time spinners Joe Sayers, Lyth and Rudolph – as both sides finished with nine points on a day which was a dismally poor advert for the competitiveness of county cricket.

Newcastle must use Matt Targett

Although it wasn’t the sort of statement signing for major money that Newcastle United are now associated with, the Magpies’ late swoop to take Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett on loan for the rest of the campaign could prove to be a masterstroke.

On the chalkboard

The 26-year-old had been a regular for Steven Gerrard’s side this campaign, making 17 Premier League appearances, but the signing of Lucas Digne from Everton meant that Targett’s game time was going to be significantly reduced.

It was a harsh blow for Villa’s player of the season last campaign, who was subject to immense praise from club legend Gabriel Agbonlahor last season, saying: “In the last 15 years, he’s the best left-back Villa have had.

“Even during my time and the left-backs I played with, I look at Matt Targett and he’s the best we’ve had in the last 15 years since I made my debut.

“He’s so good going forward, he has a good connection with Jack Grealish on that side. He can defend, he’s proved this season he can defend against the top teams.

“He’s really comfortable on the ball, if he can continue to put in these performances then there is 100 per cent no reason why he can’t get into the England squad.”

However, the Englishman will still be able to complete a full top-flight campaign as a regular through his temporary stay in the North-East.

There are certainly some areas of Eddie Howe’s squad where numbers are limited, however, Newcastle now have four recognised left-backs in their ranks with Targett surely the best option.

Matt Ritchie has been Howe’s first choice for the majority of the season, making 16 league appearances so far, whilst Paul Dummett (two) and Jamal Lewis (five) have had quiet campaigns.

When you compare both Ritchie and Targett, their core statistics are quite similar, with the latter making one more league appearance this season and both having two-goal involvements each in the league.

However, the Scotland international has been part of a much worse side, particularly regarding defence, than his new teammate.

The Tyneside outfit are the Premier League’s second-worst defenders having conceded 43 goals in 21 games, whilst Villa have let in 11 fewer in the same space of time.

Moreover, Ritchie is yet to keep a clean sheet in the top-flight this season whilst Targett has three, which is arguably a reason why the former hasn’t featured for Newcastle in the league since mid-December.

Alongside the Englishman, Newcastle added Kieran Trippier to their squad on the other side of the defence in January, another player who could certainly prove vital in the final months of the season.

Howe is going to have to find a way to improve his side’s defence, otherwise, they could well be on course for a second relegation to the Championship in six years. Having the services of the £35k per week left-back for the rest of the season could prove to be the deciding factor.
