Faz parte do futebol. Sempre vai querer ganhar, como nós queríamos. Mas sinto confiança no grupo. Estamos conscientes de que temos de colocar o São Paulo no lugar mais alto possível. Precisamos trabalhar – opinou Cueva.

Prior hundred powers Sussex win

Matt Prior made the sixth highest score in Twenty20 history as Sussex Sharks maintained their stranglehold on the South Division with a crushing 53-run win over Glamorgan Dragons at Hove

23-Jun-2010
ScorecardMatt Prior made the sixth highest score in Twenty20 history as Sussex Sharks maintained their stranglehold on the South Division with a crushing 53-run win over Glamorgan Dragons at Hove.Prior, 28, is desperate to win back his place in England’s one-day side after losing out to Craig Kieswetter and strengthened his claims with117 from just 55 balls – matching knocks by Chris Gayle and Andrew Symonds – as Sussex piled up 239 for 5, the third biggest total in this Friends Provident t20 history. It was all too much for the Dragons, although they restored some pride by completing their 20 overs at 186 for 5, but Sussex still claimed their eighth win out of nine so far. Prior and New Zealander Brendon McCullum, who was making his final appearance for the Sharks, put on 33 in 21 balls to get the innings off to a flying start but that was a mere warm-up as Prior began to dismantle the Glamorgan attack. His first 50 runs came off a relatively sedate 30 balls although he got to the milestone with the third of three successive sixes off David Harrison. Prior then went into overdrive without ever resorting to slogging as he found gaps on both sides of the wicket with a mixture of powerful drives and pulls. He went from 52 to 117 in just 25 deliveries, hitting six fours in eight balls at one stage off James Harris and Jim Allenby. In doing so he put on 73 in 42 deliveries for the second wicket with Murray Goodwin and a further 56 in 23 with Dwayne Smith, who contributed just nine to the partnership.Prior brought up only the third Twenty20 century by a Sussex batsman with a four down the ground and when he top-edged an attempted pull off Australian quick Shaun Tait his innings had contained 90 runs in boundaries – 15 fours and five sixes – and he departed to a standing ovation from the 4,000 crowd. If Glamorgan thought their suffering was over they were mistaken as Chris Nash improvised superbly to score 60 not out from just 26 balls with seven fours and three sixes, adding 63 in 27 deliveries with Joe Gatting for the fifth wicket.Dragons skipper Jamie Dalrymple, who had won the toss, used seven bowlers but Tait apart they all suffered with Harris, who conceded 61 in his four wicketless overs, taking the worst punishment. In the reply, opener Mark Cosgrove made 43 off 32 balls and at the end of their powerplay Glamorgan were only four runs behind Sussex’s position at the same point. But after the Australian left-hander holed out to deep mid-wicket in Nash’s only over of off-breaks the Dragons never threatened. Skipper Dalrymple did make an unbeaten 46 but regular wickets – five of the six Sussex bowlers picked up a scalp – meant there was never a meaningful enough partnership to take the batting side close.

Wolves team news vs Arsenal as 3 injured

Tim Spiers has now revealed a triple injury blow for Wolves before they play Arsenal at home in the Premier League tonight.

The Lowdown: Big game

With the chance to climb above the Gunners in the Premier League table with a win, this is all of a sudden a big game for Bruno Lage’s team in the race for European football.

Both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have dropped points in midweek, meaning that the race for the top four is wide open, and the Midlands club could put themselves in a very good position going into the last few months of the season.

The Latest: Triple injury update

Taking to Twitter, following Lage’s pre-game press conference, The Athletic journalist Spiers has now revealed that Willy Boly, Yerson Mosquera and Pedro Neto are all still ‘a bit away’, and so will not be able to feature in the match at Molineux:

“Boly, Mosquera and Neto still a bit away.”

The Verdict: Blow

Of course, to be without three players, with their largely thin squad already, will come as a blow to Lage and the Wanderers.

WWFC fans will be desperate to see Neto especially out on the pitch again, given his five goals and six assists in the top flight last season (Transfermarkt), and Lage himself will no doubt want to work with his fellow countryman.

As for centre-back options, given that the Portuguese manager likes to play with few options there, and no real room to rotate his backline if any issues pop up in the game.

Nonetheless, Lage will have to find a way to win with the current squad that he has at his disposal, and you wouldn’t put it past him – they’ve picked up 13 of the last 15 points available.

NUFC: Howe must axe "passive" dud

Newcastle return to Premier League action tonight against Everton as they look to make it back-to-back wins in the top-flight.

The Magpies beat Leeds 1-0 in their last outing in January and now come up against Frank Lampard’s Toffees on Tuesday night at St. James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s squad has been bolstered since their previous match, with Matt Targett, Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes coming in, but what changes will he make to the side?

Time’s up

One player who must be brutally axed from the XI is central midfielder Joe Willock. His time is up and he must be placed on the bench for this clash as he has been underwhelming throughout the campaign, putting in another below-par showing against the Whites.

As per SofaScore, he lost 70% (7/10) of his individual duels in the match and failed with three of his five dribble attempts. In 90 minutes on the pitch, he made one tackle and zero clearances, interceptions or blocks, showing that he was disappointing from a physical and defensive standpoint.

Willock has struggled all season and has not made up for his lack of strength in the middle of the park by being a threat in the final third. In 17 Premier League matches, he has scored zero goals and created just 12 chances (zero big chances) – registering zero assists.

This means that he is far too weak out of possession and lacking in quality when he has the chance to get on the ball to make things happen. That is a far cry from the eight-goal Willock Newcastle fans watched in the second-half of the 2020/21 campaign.

Freddie Ljungberg previously dubbed Willock as “passive” whilst the midfielder was playing for the Gunners and the lightweight’s statistics this season suggest that the retired Swedish international’s choice of word was apt. He does not offer enough in midfield to make him a key player for Howe and that is why he should be axed from the side.

Therefore, Howe must axe the liability from the team and give another player a chance to come in, whether that is new signing Bruno Guimaraes or another midfielder until the Brazilian is fit to make his debut for the side. Either way, Willock’s time in the XI is up and he should be restricted to a supporting role for now until he is able to show vast improvement – in training or off in the bench.

Peter Chingoka, the Zimbabwe Cricket chairman, has said Zimbabwe were looking to return to Test cricket in May 2011 with a home series against Bangladesh, following a recent meeting with ICC president David Morgan and chief executive Haroon Lorgat.”We will resume our Test commitments against Bangladesh at home in May 2011,” Chingoka was quoted as saying by . “We will then have gradual progression afterwards by playing sides we think we can compete with, like West Indies and New Zealand. We are developing a strong and competitive domestic competition as a result of the ICC task team’s recommendations, and we are now looking to make a gradual return to Test cricket sometime after the World Cup in 2011.”Chingoka added that South Africa had offered to host a one-off Test between the teams each year. “We are indebted to Cricket South Africa for their continuous support,” he said.Zimbabwe have not played a Test since 2005, after political upheaval ravaged the team and left it unable to compete at the highest level. Slowly, as order gradually returned to the country, the cricket team’s fortunes improved too, culminating in Zimbabwe’s unexpected success in the tri-series they hosted this month, where they reached the final.Chingoka felt Zimbabwe were ready to return to the Test game thanks to the series of steps taken by the board, like setting up a new high-performance coaching centre and a revamped domestic structure, which includes a franchise-based Twenty20 tournament. Both the domestic tournaments and the recently-completed Tri-Series were well attended by local supporters and Chingoka hoped cricket could establish itself as the most popular sport in the country. “We hope the return to Test cricket will continue the growth and development of people playing cricket in Zimbabwe as we aim to make cricket the number one sport in Zimbabwe within the next five years.”Morgan was delighted to see the progress being made and praised the Zimbabwe set-up for including former players, like national selector Alastair Campbell, in the management of the side. “I take great pleasure in the number of smiling faces around Zimbabwe Cricket. It is very comforting for the ICC to observe the improvement and success of the Zimbabwe team in recent months.”It is also very good from an ICC perspective to see former players returning to the squad and also taking up support roles around the team. The recent results have been a good story for the Zimbabwe cricket team and the ICC is pleased to have played a part in that progress.”

Essex batsman Ravi Bopara gave a timely reminder to the England selectors by scoring a fine century against leaders Yorkshire on the opening day of the County Championship clash at Chelmsford. With the opening Test against Pakistan just over a week away, the 25-year-old right-hander posted 142 to press his claims for a recall now that Ian Bell is sidelined through injury.Bopara took full advantage of a friendly pitch to stamp his authority on the opening day’s play as Essex reached the close on 353 for 6. He never looked in the slightest trouble in completing his first Championship hundred of the season, having struck half-centuries in his previous two outings. It contained 13 fours and he went on to collect another six before a mistimed hook against paceman Tino Best ended up in the hands of Adil Rashid at square leg. While Bopara was enjoying himself, Alastair Cook failed to capitalise on the conditions. After looking at ease whilst collecting five fours in moving to 44, the England opener was the architect of his own downfall when he slashed a wide delivery from Steve Patterson to provide wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy with an easy catch. Cook’s dismissal came in the over following the departure of Jaik Mickleburgh, who contributed 38 out of an opening stand of 97 before he was bowled by leg-spinner Rashid. When Tom Westley fell leg before to Patterson it meant Essex had lost three wickets in seven overs while moving to 120 at lunch. But Bopara and Matt Walker were to retrieve the situation by adding 80 in 29 overs before the latter was well caught low down at deep mid-wicket by Jonathan Bairstow for 26 to give Rashid another success. But Walker’s exit only signalled the arrival of James Foster to join Bopara in the most lucrative partnership of the day. They warmed to their task by adding 124 in 26 overs, of which Foster made 61, before Oliver Hannon-Dalby had him caught at deep square-leg by Patterson with the second new ball.Bopara was to depart soon afterwards, a few minutes before the close, leaving Grant Flower and Tim Phillips to drop anchor and survive to carry their partnership into the second day. Yorkshire used six bowlers in their toiling attempts to make progress, the most successful being Rashid and Patterson who have so far picked up two wickets each for 74 and 72 respectfully.
