The PCB has declined a request by the Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA) to write to the BCCI and invite an Indian veterans team to play in Pakistan. The PVCA, following the PCB’s refusal, have sought help from the Pakistan President, who is also the patron-in-chief of the country’s cricket board.”We have written a letter to PCB’s patron-in-chief Mr Asif Ali Zardari asking him to instruct the board to accept our request of writing to BCCI,” Fawad Ijaz Khan, the president of the PVCA said. “The tour is being organised for a noble cause and therefore the cause should be supported as it will only help in rebuilding the lost image of Pakistan.”There has been no international cricket in Pakistan since the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore in March last year, while a breakdown in diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks in November 2008 have affected cricketing ties between the two countries. Pakistan cricketers have not featured in the last two IPLs, and haven’t played India in a bilateral series since.There have been attempts on the Indian side to get the tour going. The Board for Veteran Cricket in India (BVCI) had agreed to tour Pakistan to play Twenty20 matches to raise funds for flood victims, but required approval from the BCCI. Former India opener Chetan Chauhan, president of the BVCI, said that the Indian body had applied to the BCCI for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) more than six weeks ago. “We are not associated with the BCCI but we always want to be on the safe side and so we take an NOC with the BCCI and then go to the Sports Ministry and after that the Home Ministry for the visa process.” The process of going through the paperwork once the NOC was received from the BCCI, he said, would take about three weeks.Chauhan said his Pakistani counterparts had assured the BVCI of PCB’s support. Chauhan wanted the Pakistan veterans body to get a letter of support from the PCB. “We asked for this letter of of assistance and co-operation, so we can talk to the BCCI. If the PCB directly wrote to the BCCI, there would be nothing like it. We would really want to help their cause.”There is a good chance that the entire process may have been slowed down at the Indian end, due to security concerns on the part of the Indian veterans themselves, with some officials fearing last-minute withdrawals by cricketers they would have decided to select for the tour.

Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik have questioned the PCB’s decision not to ‘clear’ them for selection for the tour of New Zealand. Kamran, the wicketkeeper who was not in the squad announced for the Twenty20 and Test series, had received clearance for selection from the ICC after he wrote to them asking if he was under investigation.”I am disappointed at being left out because I forwarded an email from the ICC to the PCB last month that cleared my name for selection,” Kamran told . “So I should know why I was excluded.” Kamran had written to the ICC after they had sent him and Salman Butt notices, during Pakistan’s tour of England in August, seeking information about events related to the 2010 World Twenty20 held in the Caribbean in May.Kamran, Malik, Mohammad Yousuf and Danish Kaneria were all left out of the squad for the New Zealand tour and Pakistan chief selector Mohsin Khan said while Yousuf’s exclusion was due to lack of fitness, the rest had not been cleared by the PCB.Malik, a former captain who has not played international cricket since Pakistan’s controversial tour of England in February, pointed to his track record. “I have performed well in the domestic season,” he said, “and throughout my 11-year career I have never been involved in any wrongdoing and was not even in the team when all those [spot-fixing] allegations were levelled.” Malik played in neither the Sydney Test nor against England at Lords – the two matches understood to be under investigation for spot-fixing by the ICC.Pakistan channel aired footage featuring alleged bookmaker Mazhar Majeed claiming Kamran was among seven players obeying his orders during matches. He underwent a minor appendicitis operation before the tour but was fit when his brother Adnan Akmal was brought into the Test side after the controversial retirement of Zulqarnain Haider. He also scored 530 runs at an average of 75.71 for National Bank in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, including his maiden first-class double-century against Fasialabad.”I am performing well at first-class level, so I still hope to play for Pakistan in the one-day series against New Zealand and then in next year’s World Cup,” Kamran said. Pakistan will announce a separate squad for the six ODIs to be played in New Zealand.

That is the type of solidity and assurance that Ten Hag and United could do with as they seek to restore the Old Trafford club to its former glories.

Middle-order batsmen Asad Shafiq and Misbah-ul-Haq batted patiently to rebuild Pakistan’s reply to 275, which had lost track in the session before tea against a determined spell from the seamers. The pair provided stability to the innings and set the platform for a lead with an unbeaten 128-run stand that has eased the burden on the inexperienced line-up to follow.The bowling was unthreatening, the conditions even more so with the virtual absence of swing and movement. Such a situation lent itself to a waiting game, one that New Zealand appeared to have an upper hand in after Taufeeq Umar and Younis Khan brought about their own downfall post lunch. Misbah and Shafiq played their own waiting game, assured that the pitch would have little role to play in their dismissals and aware that a bad ball wasn’t too far away with New Zealand rotating their bowlers. Both were opportunistic, Shafiq more so than Misbah, helping offset any extended period of quiet with the occasional boundary and taking their team closer to the first-innings target.Shafiq found the boundaries with ease on a quick outfield, clipping and driving the seamers through midwicket and fine leg and using his feet well against spin. The pair added 43 to take India to 85 for 3 in 13.2 overs, and the lower order landed enough blows to sustain the momentum to the end, despite Shemaine Campbelle’s spell of 3 for 20. Reema Malhotra finished the innings in style, reverse-sweeping and lapping the last two deliveries for boundaries.West Indies’ chase began disastrously when Juliana Nero was run out without a run on the board. Deandra Dottin attacked from one end, but India kept striking at the other to cripple the chase. Stacy-Ann King and Shanel Daley tried to revive things with a 40-run stand after the score had limped to 46 for 5, but could not break free, and wickets again began to tumble from the 15th over.
