Willoughby blitzes Kent in brief encounter

Charl Willoughby took 4 for 8 as Essex made good use of winning the toss on a rain-affected first day against Kent

Age does not weary them, not in these conditions anyway. Essex’s veteran opening attack of David Masters and Charl Willoughby had Kent stumbling to 17 for 5 on a drastically curtailed day.The start was a setback to Kent’s hopes of taking over the lead in Division Two. Whether a mortal blow has been landed might depend on how effectively Essex can rub in their first-day advantage. They have Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara to bat and can be fairly sure that the England men will not be as easy to dislodge as some of today’s victims in the 9.4 overs allowed by the rain.Masters, still very effective at the age of 34, struck with the day’s second delivery when Scott Newman thin-edged a seamer that he should have covered or left, rather than something in between. Willoughby, 37, followed up with some masterly left-arm swing, bursting through the Kent upper order with four wickets for one in nine balls. The England Under-19s left-armer Tymal Mills rocked Glamorgan last week with raw pace; this time Willoughby did the damage with raw subtlety. It is part of cricket’s appeal that there can be many ways of achieving the same outcome, through pace, swing or spin, though there is unlikely to be much of the latter in this game.If the signing of Willoughby from Somerset raised a few eyebrows at the time, they are not raised now, as the slogan might have had it. The South African continued to defy advancing years through fitness and a good, reliable action, quickly exploiting helpful conditions. In his second over he pinned Ben Harmison back on his stumps for an lbw. In his third, he beat Rob Key in front of off stump for another decision and two balls later Michael Powell reached for a drive and snicked a straightforward catch, perhaps expecting the ball to curve into him more than it did. Brendon Nash, the West Indies left-hander, retaliated with a succulent off-drive but when he had his off stump knocked out, Kent were reeling.Cook must have been quietly pleased that his captain, James Foster, won the toss, sparing him a possible ordeal in poor light and soggy conditions. Kent would have done themselves a favour if they had knocked the ball into the wet outfield more often, reducing the swing, but the bat seldom located the right line.Perhaps the key will be how well Charlie Shreck and Mark Davies, both useful seam performers, can follow the work of Willoughby and Masters. In support they have the tall Leeds-Bradford University seamer Ivan Thomas, 20, on his Championship debut. Thomas, from Blackheath, took 6 for 21 for the university in the victory over a callow Sussex side last week and bowled well in a favourable draw against Yorkshire in April. If Matt Coles is required by England Lions to play, Thomas, Kent’s nominated reserve, should have a good opportunity to make an early mark on the county circuit.

Sammy's West Indies 'fear winning'

Rudi Webster, who has worked as a mental skills coach with West Indies for three decades, believes Darren Sammy’s side have a fear of winning

The West Indies team led by Darren Sammy have a fear of winning. That analysis was made quite recently by Rudi Webster, who has worked with some of the great West Indies teams as a mental skills coach over the last three decades.According to Webster, each time Sammy’s team have found themselves with controls in hand, they have retreated. That is because they found themselves in unfamiliar territory and did not know how to seize the opportunity.”I don’t think deep down the fellas believe that they can win,” Webster said. “Consciously, they will tell you ‘of course, we can win.’ But when you question them and you get below the surface, belief is not there.”It is that lack of belief, he contends, that is negating all the other positives Sammy and the coach, Ottis Gibson, are steadily constructing in the background; the magic card that the likes of Frank Worrell and Clive Lloyd used to inspire their teams is missing.”At this level performance revolves more around self-belief than around talent or potential,” Webster said. “Worrell and Lloyd did one thing that lifted West Indies cricket to greater heights: they were able to get the players to change their self-image and to start believing in themselves. Their self-belief was so firm and strong that nobody could beat them.”Webster presented a ready example to justify his claim. “If you look back at West Indies they were in a similar position in the late 90s. Remember we went to South Africa and got beaten very badly. And then played Australia at home and almost won the series. Everybody said we were improving. And then see what happened subsequently. So, although we have performed better in the last two Test series, it does not mean that we have turned the corner.”The figures support him. In 1998 West Indies travelled to South Africa under Brian Lara’s captaincy. They were mauled 5-0 in the Tests and then drubbed 6-1 in the ODI series. But Lara and the West Indies bounced back triumphantly when they fought hard against Australia to share the Frank Worrell Trophy 2-2. The ODI series was also shared, 3-3 with a tied game. Lara scored three scintillating centuries including a memorable 153 at Bridgetown when West Indies chased down 308 to lead 2-1 in the series. But just like a birthday candle, any hopes of a West Indies revival were blown away quickly as the slide over the last decade indicates.Back in the present, the same sort of optimism has been present in the past 12 months. Late last year, West Indies lost the three-Test series in India 2-0, but on two occasions they relinquished a firm grip on the match. In the first Test in Delhi, West Indies had a 95-run lead but squandered it as they were bowled out for 180 in the second innings. India successfully chased the target of 276.Then in the final Test in Mumbai, the West Indies batting bonded well to raise a formidable 590 and then took a 108-run lead as their bowlers responded strongly, too. But once again, as their hopes started soaring, they plunged equally fast as they were bundled out for 134. If there was any consolation, the match finished as a draw. Then at home this April, Sammy’s side initially dominated the first Test against Australia in Barbados. West Indies had made 449 after electing to bat and when Australia were struggling at 250-7, West Indies dared. But the bowlers suddenly lost the plot as the Australian tail wagged. Incredibly, Australia took the lead in the series with a three-wicket victory. In the third Test, chasing 374 with enough time in hand, West Indies lost the match by 74 runs and the series. So here they are in England, where in the last ten Tests spread over three series, West Indies have lost nine. In these 10 matches they have scored six centuries, while England have scored 20 hundreds. Shivnarine Chanderpaul (3), Ramnaresh Sarwan (2) and Chris Gayle (1) are the only ones to score a Test century in England during this period. England’s bowlers have taken a wicket every 46 balls in these 10 Tests; West Indies’ have taken a wicket every 78 balls.Much of the English media has been blunt in giving a thumbs down to Sammy and his team, even going to the extent of asking how Sammy could hold his place in the team when he has failed miserably as a batsman. At every given opportunity, the West Indies players have been reminded that their top order has a spine weaker than a straw, their bowlers seem to be unfit and how the best players are plying their trade in the IPL.To their credit, Sammy and Gibson have so far successfully ducked all such arrows, while keeping their heads still. Both have been modest in suggesting the main challenge will be to last five days against the No. 1 team. Hence you can understand Sammy when he says that it is not as frustrating to lose players to the IPL as it is to hang the pendant of belief on the remaining players each time they take the field.”It’s about getting victories under our belt and that is something that will come when we play more together and believe even more in ourselves,” he said on the eve of the first Test. “I’m not really frustrated by who’s here and who’s not.”In Sammy’s 16 Tests as captain, West Indies have won 2, lost 6, and drawn 8. That compares favourably with the 17 Tests before Sammy took over the captaincy when they won 1, lost 8 and drew 8.The major improvement has been in bowling. From a bowling average of 44.18 runs per wicket in those 17 Tests, West Indies’ bowling average has improved to 33.61 runs per wicket during Sammy’s time and you can definitely predict a strong hand of Gibson here. Although any batting improvement has remained insignificant (30.63 before Sammy, 28.96 during Sammy), there is more than a whiff of promise.Sammy did not discount Webster’s analysis. “We keep finding ourselves in winning positions and some way we keep letting it go,” he said. “When you are playing against a champion team, they find a way to win so we need to have that way when we are on top not to collapse and stuff.”That’s been happening to us: in India, India in the Caribbean and Australia recently. We’ve been competing and pushing teams down to the wire, if you look at the last series, the 2-0 scoreline doesn’t reflect the way we played. Hopefully we can eliminate these things in this series here.”

Off-field issues dominate final Test

Despite this series having been decided last week there have been plenty of talking points in the lead-up to the final Test at Edgbaston

Preview by Andrew McGlashan06-Jun-2012Match FactsJune 7-11, Edgbaston

The Big PictureDespite this series having been decided last week there have been plenty of talking points in the lead-up to the final Test at Edgbaston. Kevin Pietersen’s retirement from limited-overs cricket (his choice for ODIs, forced for T20s) heads the list, followed by James Anderson being rested and, from West Indies’ point of view, the call-up for Sunil Narine which puts him on the verge of an eagerly anticipated debut. The series has provided some periods of hard-fought Test cricket but, ultimately, England have had too much depth for West Indies. They overwhelmed the visitors on the third evening in Nottingham with a six-wicket burst led by Tim Bresnan which left West Indies no way back. It raised questions about how far West Indies have really come and they do have a major issue with sustaining performances over five days. Yet their recovery was never going to be easy.If the weather allows enough overs England will expect to complete a cleansweep but Andrew Strauss would like a more complete display. In both games the batting has not made the most of strong first-innings positions to really ram home an advantage. Better teams would not have allowed England off the hook. All eyes will be on Pietersen – now purely a Test player – but, obviously, he has nothing to prove. That is not the case for Jonny Bairstow who has another opportunity to make life tough for the selectors ahead of the South Africa series. Ravi Bopara is back from injury and scoring runs for Essex so the challenge is Bairstow’s to keep him at bay.Form guide (Most recent first)
England WWWLL
West Indies LLLDLWatch out forEngland’s record against mystery spin is poor, you only have to go back to Saeed Ajmal earlier this year, so the prospect of them facing Sunil Narine for the first time is a fascinating one. Conditions will not be in Narine’s favour, but the home side’s batsmen will have to base their planning on video evidence. Narine’s first-class average is an astonishing 11.88 (after six matches) and although that needs to include caveats about the quality of some of the opposition, his impact at ODI level suggests he will not be an easy prospect.Steven Finn has made no secret of his frustration at waiting on the sidelines this season so it may be an idea to give him some space if Graham Onions beats him to replacing Anderson. Since losing his place during the 2010-11 Ashes series Finn has only made two further appearances both against Sri Lanka; at Lord’s (when Anderson was injured) and in Colombo (when Broad was injured). If he does get another opportunity it could be another short stay in the team but there remains plenty of time for him to forge the long Test career fully expected of him.Team newsThere remains a chance England could rest Stuart Broad along with Anderson, but if that is not the case it becomes a straight decision between Finn and Onions for the bowling slot. Finn is the next man in line, but Onions’ county form – where he has recently taken 11 in a match against Lancashire – makes a compelling case.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 Steven FinnWest Indies will need to ponder a few changes. Narine is favoured to replace Shane Shillingford (despite being Roach’s replacement in the squad) while either Tino Best or Fidel Edwards will partner Ravi Rampaul. The top order will need a shuffle, too. Kirk Edwards, for his own well-being, needs to step away from the spotlight. Narsingh Deonarine is likely to bat No. 6.West Indies (probable) 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Narsingh Deonarine, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Tino Best, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Sunil NarinePitch and conditionsThe forecast, sadly, is not good for large portions of the Test. Thursday appears especially dicey with heavy rain forecast (which also arrived to impact the practice days) so it could be a frustrating experience. Pitches at Edgbaston produce excellent Test cricket and if the cloud cover stays around the pace bowlers will find particular encouragement.Stats and trivia The two teams have met eight times at Edgbaston with West Indies winning four and England two. The last meeting was in 2004 when England won by 256 runs. There will be two survivors from the 2004 match – Andrew Strauss and Shivnarine Chanderpaul – although James Anderson was also part of England’s attack. Strauss needs 87 runs to reach 7000 in Test cricketQuotes”This was one of those occasions where an opportunity presented itself and we all think it’s prudent that we take the opportunity with Jimmy and hopefully that will allow him to be fresh for the rest of the summer and beyond.”

Jogo truncado e poucas chances

Palmeiras aproveita erros do Flu e aumenta vantagem
