RFC: Sources reveal Kent transfer update

According to recent reports, Glasgow Rangers winger, Ryan Kent, looks set to stay at Ibrox this summer, despite strong interest from a Premier League side.

The report by Football Insider claims that sources have revealed Kent’s desire to remain at Rangers for a further year, despite the fact that Leeds United are interested in his signing this summer.

It is then said that the £20,000-per-week winger feels a “loyalty” to Steven Gerrard and is looking forward to playing in the Champions League with Rangers next season.

Finally, it is reported that Gers are still in talks to sign the 24-year-old down to a new deal at Ibrox, although there have been “complications” in negotiations after the winger changed agents last year.

Transfer Tavern Take

So far this season, Kent has been in rather remarkable form over his 33 Scottish Premiership appearances for Rangers, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists, as well as averaging a highly impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.40 – ranking him as the club’s joint second-best performer in the Scottish top flight.

As such, the news that Kent looks set to stay at Ibrox for at least another year is likely to be brilliant to hear for both Steven Gerrard and fans of the club alike, as the former Liverpool man could prove highly influential in Rangers’ bid to retain their Premiership crown, as well as in their Champions League campaign.

If the club do opt to sell him in the future, then a successful Champions League campaign would also likely make a big difference to the type of fee they could demand.

Maguire discusses ESL threat to Sunderland

Kieran Maguire has revealed the European Super League could have cost Sunderland up to £16m per season.

Maguire discusses ESL impact

Earlier this week, the European Super League crashed and burned within 48 hours of its creation (The Guardian). However, for a couple of days, it appeared to be a venture which threatened the very future of the game.

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire revealed that the project could have deprived the likes of Sunderland of £16m per season in solidarity payments from the Premier League. He explained:

“A lot would depend on the value of the Premier League TV rights.

“The Premier League might have become the second-most important tournament for the franchise clubs.

“That would mean a lot of squad rotation. You could effectively be seeing Man United fielding their B-team. That in turn devalues the product.

“If the value of Premier League rights kept falling because there’s no longer an incentive to get in the top four, that would have a negative impact on the EFL.

“Clubs in the EFL get a fixed percentage of the Premier League TV deal. If that goes down in value, that has a direct impact on clubs in the EFL.”

Crushing

While it may not feel as though the Premier League does much for the lower divisions, the entire football pyramid in England does benefit from the revenue generated by the top division in the country. For many clubs, they rely on this cash influx to stay afloat.

The six clubs from England who initially signed up to this project are the biggest in the country and therefore attract the most money. Without them, the Premier League’s brand, and its revenue, would be negatively impacted. Fortunately, for now at least, it is something we no longer have to worry about.

In other news, Kevin Phillips is worried this man could leave the Stadium of Light in the summer.

Tottenham will not pay up for Nagelsmann

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer is adamant Daniel Levy will not pay the necessary money needed to make Julian Nagelsmann the next Tottenham manager.

Tottenham are searching for a new man for the dugout following the sacking of Jose Mourinho, and that search seems to have taken them to RB Leipzig boss Nagelsmann.

However, according to Goal, it will cost the north London club €30m (£26m) to get the 33-year-old out of his Leipzig contract.

It would be a world-record fee for a manager, a fee Palmer cannot see Levy and Tottenham paying.

When asked by FFC whether he could see Daniel Levy paying that sort of money for Nagelsmann, the ex-Sheffield Wednesday star said:

“In a word, no. They’ve made their decision; they’re not going to do anything until the summer. I think they sacked Jose because they were thinking about getting him out anyhow and what would have made it difficult for them to get him out is if he had won the cup.

“I don’t think anything’s going to happen before the summer.”

Tottenham, however, may not be able to wait until the summer, with Bayern Munich having already seemingly made their move for Nagelsmann.

Whatever the case, that £26m Leipzig are said to be demanding looks like it could be a sticking point for Spurs.

Southampton’s Sam McQueen suffers huge blow

Ralph Hasenhuttl has recently delivered the devastating news that Southampton defender Sam McQueen might never play football again due to his injury concerns.

The 26-year-old left-back has been sidelined since before the Austrian even arrived at the club, as he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament whilst on loan at Middlesbrough back in 2018.

The initial injury was expected to keep him out for a year but the screws which were used in his knee reconstruction process became infected, which has led to him being on the treatment table for nearly three years now.

Hasenhuttl confirmed in a recent interview with Prost International: “Since I’m here I’ve never saw him on the pitch. But when you know the infection on his knee and how things are going on then it’s even now a wonder that he’s able to play football or maybe one time will be able to play football again.

“We don’t know if he will ever return back to the pitch but if (he does) then it is a miracle.”

It is terribly sad news for McQueen, who was once considered a bright academy prospect at Southampton, making 29 appearances for the senior side in total between 2013/14 and 2017/18.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/southampton-saints-ralph-hasenhuttl-martin-semmens-st-marys” title=”Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more”]

He was heavily praised by former Saints captain Jose Fonte after he made his Premier League debut against Manchester City, with the Portuguese centre-back saying: “He’s surprised me. He’s done really, really well and fully deserves to be in the team now. Well done to him, credit to him for the work he has done. I hope he can keep doing what he is doing. He needs to keep improving, because he’s been a very good surprise.”

Therefore, had he not suffered his injury problems, then you feel that McQueen could definitely have been a regular in Southampton’s first team by now, and it is a real shame that his footballing career looks to be over.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431″]

Unfortunately for the Saints academy graduate, his contract with the club is set to expire at the end of the current season and it is very difficult to see him being offered a new deal in a playing capacity. It is a real shame for McQueen, who could have gone on to have a great footballing career but will now most likely need to look for alternative work.

Fry sends warming to Tottenham owners

Barry Fry has exclusively told Football FanCast that Tottenham must make a “statement” in the transfer window.

They signed no less than seven players last summer, but following their Carabao Cup final defeat last weekend, it’s been another trophyless season for Spurs, who could also miss out on Champions League football once again – with the gap to fourth-placed Chelsea at five points.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been the best of their seven summer additions, but the likes of Joe Rodon, Matt Doherty and Carlos Vinicius have all struggled to make an impact in Tottenham’s first-team, with the latter scoring just once in the Premier League.

And Fry has warned Tottenham’s owners that they must improve their squad to compete again next season.

Should Spurs finish 7th or lower, it would be the first time they’ve finished outside the top-six since coming 8th under Harry Redknapp back in 2008-09.

Fry told Football FanCast:

“I think a statement has got to be made by Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy that they intend to keep Harry and they intend to help him by getting better quality squad players.

“If Tottenham’s first team go out, on their day they can beat anybody, but if they get injuries, they haven’t got the strength in depth or class to come in and do the same job.

“They’ve got a big, big problem!”

Liverpool fans react to Man United rumour

A number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting positively to news that Manchester United fans could stage another protest before their clash.

The Reds are back in Premier League action on Thursday evening, as the latest chapter in English football’s biggest fixture is written.

It is a huge game for Liverpool, with Arsenal’s 1-0 win away to Chelsea on Wednesday giving them fresh hope that a top-four finish is possible.

That being said, Jurgen Klopp’s side will be coming up against a team in good form and who will be hoping to damage their Champions League hopes.

The match has been rearranged because of the protests that took place at Old Trafford earlier this month, but according to the Telegraph [via Anfield Watch], there are fears from United that similar protests could happen again, potentially throwing the game into doubt.

Gers fans praise Aribo

Many Glasgow Rangers fans were delighted with the performance of Joe Aribo during their comprehensive victory over Aberdeen on Saturday.

The Gers finished the 2020/21 campaign in style with a comfortable victory over the Dons thanks to a Joe Lewis own-goal and a brace from Kemar Roofe. The result means that, for the first time in the history of the club, the Gers have gone a whole top-flight campaign unbeaten (Daily Record), and they will be able to celebrate as they lift the trophy at Ibrox after the match.

Aribo was deployed in the unfamiliar position of left-back with Borna Barisic unavailable, and the Nigeria international put in a fantastic performance. He linked up particularly well with left-winger Ryan Kent as the Gers bossed the game.

Aribo has come in for criticism from some Gers supporters in the past, but he proved them wrong here as his passing was near-perfect, while he also won several duels this afternoon.

These Rangers fans were happy with what they saw from the 24-year-old today, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Sheffield United’s Jebbison linked away

Sheffield United are facing a serious battle to keep hold of Daniel Jebbison this summer, with Champions League clubs now circling ahead of the transfer window.

According to 90min, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have joined the race to sign the exciting 17-year-old, whilst a number of Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Everton are also said to be interested.

The England U18 international made his first appearance for the Blades as a substitute against Crystal Palace recently and was rewarded with his first start for the club against Everton on Sunday night.

It was a dream full debut for the teenager, as he gave the Blades the lead with just seven minutes on the clock, showing great instincts to turn Jack Robinson’s cross past Jordan Pickford.

That would prove to be the only goal of the game and Blades fans will be hoping to see him feature again in their final two Premier League fixtures, before their return to the Championship next season.

Jebbison, who also has six goals in six FA Youth Cup games this season, taking his tally for the season to seven, spent the first half of the season on loan with non-league Chorley and showed exactly why Blades fans should be excited about his future in the win at Goodison Park.

Therefore, the Bramall Lane faithful will certainly be disappointed if the 17-year-old was to depart this summer to join a huge club such as Bayern Munich, where he would be unlikely to get first-team opportunities for at least a couple of years.

They will undoubtedly be hoping to tie Jebbison down to a new long-term contract and keep him around the squad, so that he can start fulfilling his obvious potential at Bramall Lane ahead of a potentially money-spinning move in the future, instead of a move away this summer which would be unlikely to bring in a huge fee.

Unfortunately, the young striker may well have his head turned by one of the big clubs this summer, and it will may prove difficult to keep him with the Yorkshire side ahead of next season but United should be doing all they can to convince him that his immediate future should be with the Blades.

Sunderland consider sacking Lee Johnson

Sunderland are considering parting ways with Lee Johnson this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that a Sunderland source has revealed that, following the Black Cats’ play-off semi-final defeat against Lincoln City, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is contemplating the 39-year-old’s position as manager of the club ahead of next season.

However, the report goes on to state that no decision has been made regarding the former Bristol City boss at present, while also commenting on the Mackems’ apparent displeasure with Johnson following the emergence of footage that appeared to show a confrontation between the Sunderland manager and the club’s fans.

Big mistake

While it is undeniable that failing to beat Lincoln City – a team who Sunderland had picked up four points against in the regular season, with a 5-1 aggregate score over the two fixtures – in the play-off semi-final was a huge disappointment for the club, Johnson has shown in his short time at Sunderland that he can get the best out of the team.

Shortly after being appointed in December of last year, the 39-year-old led the club on a run of 12 straight league games without defeat, with the end of the run coinciding with the loss of a number of first-team players due to injury, none more important than the on-loan Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Dion Sanderson.

Furthermore, while it is by no means a major trophy, Sunderland did win the Papa John’s Trophy under the leadership of Johnson this season, ending a 48-year wait for a victory at Wembley.

And, with a pre-season and a summer transfer window ahead of the club this summer, Johnson has a real opportunity to mould the squad into one in his image, something that the former Oldham Athletic boss did not have a chance to do this season – making his achievements appear slightly more impressive.

As such, considering how well Johnson had the team playing earlier this year, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus could be heading for a massive mistake if he does go on to sack the 39-year-old before he has had an extended period of time improve the team – both on the training pitch and in the transfer window – regardless of his failure in the play-offs.

WHU fans love transfer news

West Ham United fans are delighted after it was revealed David Moyes could have £75m to spend on new players this summer.

This past season has been a fantastic one for the Hammers. Despite battling against relegation last term, they ended up finishing this one in sixth place – they have therefore qualified for the Europa League. There was hope that they could even make the Champions League, but to be in any European competition at all is a huge success.

As they will be competing in another tournament next term, they will need to bring in new players to build a deeper squad. And according to Claret & Hugh, Moyes will have £75m to spend on new players before added on sales as he aims to make his side competitive both in Europe and domestically.

The news was shared on Twitter by @WestHam_Central, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.
