Everton watch Mudryk for Ukraine

Everton reportedly sent scouts to watch Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk play for Ukraine ahead of the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Bid rejected

Former player and Shakhtar sporting director Darijo Srna confirmed that the Goodison Park outfit had a bid of €30m (£26.4m) rejected by the Ukrainian club in the summer.

Now, it looks as if they could try their luck again in January, after sending scouts to watch him in action on international duty.

The Latest: Scouts sent

Writing in his latest piece for 90min, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has revealed that scouts from the Merseyside club were in attendance to watch Mudryk in action for Ukraine in their 3-0 defeat away to Scotland in the UEFA Nations League on Wednesday night.

However, other Premier League scouts were also at the game, including from Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Leeds United, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Wolves, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Verdict: Look elsewhere

It is very likely that Mudryk’s value would have increased significantly since the transfer window closed, and so Frank Lampard’s side are unlikely to be able to afford him in January.

They face competition from teams who can offer him European football, which he will be more inclined to accept after a red-hot start to his first proper campaign on the continental stage.

Hailed as an ‘absolutely unreal‘ talent by football presenter and pundit Jack Collins, Mudryk has five goal contributions in five matches already this season, including four in the UEFA Champions League (Transfermarkt), and so it would be a real shame to miss out on his signing.

Rangers: Lawrence suffers injury setback

Glasgow Rangers have recorded two wins in a row in the Premiership and appear to be getting their campaign back on track following some terrible performances last month.

The Ibrox side take on Liverpool in the Champions League tonight and it provides the team with an opportunity to win their first points in the competition since a 1-1 draw with Bursaspor way back in 2010.

Liverpool aren’t exactly in the best form either as they currently occupy ninth spot in the Premier League table. Giovanni van Bronckhorst could certainly give the travelling Ibrox faithful something to cheer if they get a positive result tonight, giving themselves a glimmer of hope for European football after Christmas.

However, the Light Blues will be without midfielder Tom Lawrence for the tie, with the Dutchman providing an update on his recovery from injury.

Lawrence suffers injury setback

The Welshman was expected to be out for only a few weeks following an injury sustained against Ross County at the end of August, but Van Bronckhorst has now confirmed he is set for an even longer period of time on the sidelines.

He suggested that he won’t be ready until after the World Cup following a new injury sustained in training.

Speaking to the media ahead of tonight’s clash with Liverpool, the Dutchman said: “Tom will be a big miss.

“He’s made a huge impact since joining us.

“He has great ability. But our squad is full of depth and others will come in. Hopefully he’ll be fully fit after the World Cup.”

In the words of James Tavernier, this is a “big blow” for the club, with Lawrence being one of the few summer arrivals to make a solid impact in his brief time at Rangers.

The 28-year-old has scored three goals while also registering two assists in only nine appearances for the team during his opening few weeks.

Scoring a free kick against PSV Eindhoven in a Champions League qualifying tie was crucial in the Light Blues’ progression to the group stage, showing that on the biggest of stages, he can thrive under the pressure.

He didn’t play a part against Ajax or Napoli due to his previous injury but would have been a hugely valuable component if he was fit for the tie with Liverpool.

As Van Bronckhorst alluded to, Rangers do have depth, however, this doesn’t mean Lawrence won’t be missed.

Liverpool are a side who are extremely fragile this season, conceding 14 goals so far, and the Welshman might have provided that creative spark that could have made the difference.

Indeed, only two players have more goal involvements than him this term, with Tavernier and Antonio Colak ahead. What’s so incredible about that is the fact he’s already missed a month of action. To not have him available tonight, and in the subsequent weeks to come is not good news for the Gers.

Sunderland: Jewison Bennette a potential fitness doubt

Sunderland have another player concern in Jewison Bennette ahead of their game at home to Preston North End in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Simms and Ba injuries

Speaking to the media in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Tony Mowbray confirmed (via The Chronicle) that Ellis Simms has been ruled out, as he has failed to recover from an injury to his big toe that he picked up before the international break.

Abdoullah Ba is also a doubt after picking up a dead leg while on international duty with France’s U20 team, while Mowbray seemingly has some concerns over Bennette’s fitness…

The Latest: Bennette concern

On Thursday morning, Mowbray also appeared to raise some concerns over Bennette’s fitness (via The Chronicle), claiming that his involvement against Preston will depend on how he feels after making the long trip from South Korea, as he was playing against them for Costa Rica during the international break:

“It depends on Jewi really, as to where he is at.

“He’s been in South Korea and the lines of communication haven’t been great. I don’t think he will be training today, but he will definitely be in training tomorrow.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Mowbray and the team will be having their fingers crossed that Bennette can play a part against Preston, after potentially suffering some jet lag coming back from South Korea and also missing the first three games after arriving at the club.

The 18-year-old starred for Costa Rica in a 2-2 draw, grabbing both goals for his country before being substituted off midway through the second half (SofaScore).

Bennette has already opened his Black Cats account with a goal last time out against Watford, and supporters will no doubt want to see more from their new signing.

Aston Villa: Dharmesh Sheth makes claim on Steven Gerrard’s future

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth can’t see Aston Villa sacking Steven Gerrard anytime soon.

The Lowdown: Speculation…

Villa haven’t had the best of starts to the campaign, with a number of defensive injuries combined with a lack of quality in the final third leaving them in 14th place with eight points from eight games.

Rumours have already emerged regarding the possibility of Gerrard being sacked, with Unai Emery and Mauricio Pochettino sounded out as potential replacements.

As we know, Gerrard remains in charge at Villa Park heading into Monday’s trip to Nottingham Forest, and Sheth has had his say on the manager’s future.

The Latest: Sheth’s comments

Talking to GiveMeSport, Sheth stated that he ‘can’t see a situation’ where NSWE decide to part ways with Gerrard, citing the effort it took to lure him from Rangers along with the investment in the playing squad.

“I can’t see a situation where Villa would sack him simply because they tried so hard in the first place to get him.

“They’ve put a lot of investment, not only in Steven Gerrard, but in the playing squad that Steven Gerrard wanted to bring in as well, so they have backed him in the transfer window.”

The Verdict: Patience required

Villa would have been hoping for a stronger start to the season, however, it makes sense to give Gerrard more time to turn things around.

Sunday’s stalemate against Leeds United was frustrating, especially as Villa played against ten men for almost half of the fixture, but if things can click in the final third relatively soon, results will improve.

Gerrard appears to have tightened things up at the back with two successive clean sheets, even despite being dealt a terrible hand with injuries in that department.

All that said, a disappointing performance against Nottingham Forest on Monday could pile the pressure on the manager.

Aston Villa had a howler on Wesley Sneijder

Aston Villa, being the illustrious club they are, have tempted plenty of high-profile talent to the Midlands over the years.

The proud winner of seven English titles, one European cup and numerous domestic trophies, it made their relegation in 2016 all the more shocking.

Especially considering how it came just seven years after they nearly signed one of the best midfielders of this generation.

Back in 2009, Wesley Sneijder was coming off the back of an underwhelming season for Real Madrid where he had scored just twice. The financially-troubled Spanish club saw him as a profitable asset that they could afford to lose and slapped a £20m price tag on the Dutchman.

With Inter Milan refusing to stump up the cash, the Daily Mail reported Villa as the favourite for his signature with Martin O’Neill in charge.

However, as we all know he did eventually make the move to Italy, for a fee of around £15m.

It was at La Beneamata where he truly began to shine, as he played an integral role in their sensational treble-winning season.

He would score eight and assist 15 across all three competitions that they won, and also provided an assist to Diego Milito for his opener in the Champions League final. This campaign also saw him awarded Midfielder of the Year.

His sensational season wasn’t done there, however, as he played nearly every minute in his country’s run to the World Cup final.

His illustrious career that ended with plenty of silverware led Roberto Mancini to dub him a “champion and a fantastic player.”

The 38-year-old would go on to excel at almost every club he played for, with particularly outstanding performances for Galatasaray. He scored 45 times and assisted 44 in 175 games for the Turkish giants before eventually retiring in 2019 at Qatari club Al-Gharafa.

He still holds the record for most caps for the Netherlands, with an astounding 134.

Sneijder will likely always be remembered as one of the classiest yet deadly midfielders of the era, with journalist Luis Miguel Echegaray labelling him a “legend” in 2018.

Whilst he was winning numerous trophies, Villa are yet to win one major honour since and have suffered a spell in the Championship too.

Had they just forked out the asking price in 2009, perhaps he could have been the catalyst to spurring them on to all kinds of success, instead of the mediocrity they have suffered through.

Aston Villa ‘crazy’ about Ruben Amorim

Aston Villa are ‘crazy’ about the idea of bringing in Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as their new boss, according to a fresh rumour that has emerged.

The Lowdown: Amorim linked with move

Numerous figures have been linked with replacing Steven Gerrard in recent days, with Villa biding their time until they appoint the perfect successor.

Amorim is one individual who has been tipped to come in and turn the Villans’ fortunes around, as he continues to shine at Sporting.

It certainly appears as though Villa think highly of the 37-year-old, following a new update regarding the club’s ongoing search for a new manager.

The Latest: Villa ‘crazy’ about manager

According to A Bola [via Sport Witness], Villa ‘insist’ on striking a deal to bring in Amorim, even though he has knocked back their interest so far.

The club are ‘crazy’ about him and are ‘thinking’ about him as their new boss, seeing him as ‘one of the best solutions’ to replace Gerrard in the Villa Park hot seat.

The Verdict: First-choice target?

It looks as though Villa see Amorim as their primary managerial target, perhaps alongside Brentford boss Thomas Frank, and he could be an exciting appointment.

At 37, he is very young in managerial terms and would bring with him fresh ideas, not to mention a winning mentality, having won five trophies as a manager to date.

Whether or not Amorim is willing to leave Sporting remains to be seen but the lure of the Premier League is always great and he could feel that now is the time for a new challenge.

"Unbelievable business" – Pundit reacts as West Brom may sell star for £17m

Former England international and now pundit Carlton Palmer has been left stunned by how much West Brom could a star player for, saying it would be “unbelievable business” by the club.

Latest West Brom news

The Baggies finally got back to winning ways in the Championship before the international break, securing a vital 2-1 victory away to Hull City. It was their first win since their 1-0 triumph at home to Plymouth Argyle on September 21st.

It put an end to a hugely frustrating run of six draws in a row for Carlos Corberan’s side, taking some of the pressure off the shoulders of the manager in the process.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Next up for West Brom is a home clash with Norwich City on Saturday afternoon, as the hosts look to not only stay in the playoff positions come the end of the weekend, but also get closer to Sunderland and Sheffield United in the automatic promotion positions.

There have been plenty of key players on show at the Hawthorns this season, not least striker Josh Maja, who has scored nine goals in 15 Championship appearances. Now, a key claim has emerged regarding his future.

Pundit stunned at West Brom ace's price tag

Speaking to Football League World, ex-England man Palmer admitted his shock at West Brom striker Josh Maja’s £17m price tag, amid interest in him from La Liga side Celta Vigo, who want to sign him in January. Palmer said cashing in for £17m on the forward would be “unbelievable business” for West Brom.

“West Brom going along nicely in the Championship, their player Josh Maja, who is having a fantastic season so far, [has] interest from Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad. Both looking for £17 million. West Brom signed him on a free transfer, so this would be unbelievable business for the football club, to get that type of money for him.

“I think it’s a fee that they wouldn’t be able to turn down. Obviously you can do a lot with £17 million, but if your people know you’re getting £17 million, then they’re going to up the ante if you want to buy a player. It’s always difficult circumstances, and this is the problem that sometimes comes with the transfer window. He’s doing really well for them, it’s going to be really difficult for them to turn down an offer of that magnitude if that offer actually materialises.”

The idea of West Brom selling the £17,000-a-week Maja may horrify some supporters, considering what a vital member of Corberan’s team he is. The 25-year-old has matured into an excellent Championship striker and his best years should still be in front of him.

That said, the opportunity for the Baggies to receive as much as £17m for one of their most prized players could be too great to turn down, considering it would be one of the most significant financial boosts in their recent history.

In fact, it would be more than the £15.2m that Salomon Rondon departed for back in 2019, which remains the biggest sale in West Brom’s history, highlighting why moving him on would be hard to say no to.

Granted, it would affect their promotion hopes midway through the season, but the money would be there to spend on a top-quality replacement.

West Ham dealt Isaiah Jones blow

West Ham United have been dealt a blow after learning that Middlesbrough won’t be selling Isaiah Jones this season, according to reports in the last 48 hours.

The Lowdown: Attracting interest

Premier League side Crystal Palace, alongside the Irons, were both interested in a move for the winger heading into the summer, and it’s clear to see why given his bright start to life at the Riverside.

However, the 23-year-old still has three years remaining on his contract in the northeast, and it appears that the newly appointed Michael Carrick will be holding onto his starlet until next summer at the earliest.

The Latest: West Ham suffer Jones setback

According to Football League World, West Ham and Palace have received ‘disappointing news’ after Boro made it clear that they have ‘no intention’ of selling Jones before the end of the current campaign.

It’s stated that David Moyes’ side are ‘still tracking’ the winger, though are set to be left ‘empty handed’ in their pursuit, at least for this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-5/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Worth a second attempt

The Irons missing out on Jones will be a blow to Moyes, but he should try to sign him again next summer as he has the potential to be a really exciting addition at the London Stadium.

The ‘full-backs nightmare’, as dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting, already has three assists and two league goals to his name this term, and is averaging 1.7 dribbles and 1.5 key passes per game (WhoScored).

Middlesbrough are currently hovering above relegation, and if they are still in a bad place at the end of the season, Jones could be tempted to look elsewhere to continue his development.

Liverpool must unleash Elliot on Spurs

Liverpool come into their match with Tottenham Hotspur today fearful that yet another defeat in the Premier League could take them firmly into the division’s midfield.

They are eighth at the moment and their hopes of securing European football next term are dwindling. Jurgen Klopp’s men haven’t won their last two domestic matches, with the concession of goals a real problem.

Indeed, the Reds have shipped 15 times, with the vast majority of those coming early in matches too.

Spurs showed against Marseille in midweek that they aren’t always too willing to be expansive in big games, so perhaps that could play to Klopp’s advantage.

However, they will have to take on Antonio Conte’s side without the injured James Milner, someone who has enjoyed a renaissance period at the top level this term. He shone at right back against Manchester City in that surprise win and has even played in midfield again throughout 2022/23.

It is perhaps damning of Liverpool’s midfield depth, though, with injuries running rife throughout that particular area of the squad.

One player who has benefitted from this is Harvey Elliott, with the teenager perhaps staking a late claim to be in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

England are hardly swamped with options in that area of the pitch either, with Elliott’s Liverpool teammate, Jordan Henderson, struggling for fitness this term and Kalvin Phillips only set to return from a spell on the sidelines in the forthcoming week.

A good performance against Tottenham, therefore, could put him firmly in Southgate’s crosshairs.

The 19-year-old is a wonderful technician and has shown as much this term, with the midfielder scoring twice in the Champions League.

Although he has contributed to just a solitary goal in the Premier League this term, it is surely only a matter of time before the youngster finds the net more often.

He has bounced back tremendously from a horrendous injury at the start of last season to become a key figure in this Liverpool team.

Fascinatingly, he ranks in the top 9% of players in his position across Europe’s top five leagues for shot-creating actions per 90 while he’s also in the best 13% for progressive passes. That shows just how creative Elliott is, with his eye for a pass and ability to pick up spaces in dangerous areas something that sets him apart from other options Klopp has.

Indeed, the very fact he ranks in the top 13% as well for progressive passes received shows how well he can pick up those pockets of space between the lines.

However, it’s not a flashy number 10 that he’s been mentioned in the same breath as, with Andy Brassell comparing him to David Beckham when he first arrived at Real Madrid.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the European football expert once said: “The fact that Harvey Elliott stands out now, of course it’s a lot to do with his excellent form, but it’s also because he reminds me of David Beckham playing in the midfield of the melted Galacticos in 2003/04.

“He’s just so much faster than everyone else. Beckham was like a flying ant in a forest of sloths really.

“Not knocking the quality of the players around him, but no one did anywhere near as much running as him in that season.”The term ‘flying ant’ could easily be applied to Elliott, who has been running the show in the middle of the park, acting as a fresh pair of legs compared to his elder colleagues.Indeed, Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Milner and Fabinho are all 29 and above, demonstrating that the young England hopeful is very much the future of Liverpool’s midfield. With that in mind, the club’s German tactician must continue to turn to the former Fulham man, with his very own ‘flying ant in a forest of sloths’ possessing the tools to unlock Liverpool on Sunday evening.

Man City: Pep Guardiola ‘may walk’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola ‘may walk’ at the end of the season having not signed a new contract, according to Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell.

The Lowdown: Big few weeks ahead

The Premier League boss has now entered the final 12 months of his deal at the Etihad, but so far has refused to commit to extending his stay beyond the 2022/23 campaign.

The Daily Mail have recently claimed that the 51-year-old is set to make an official decision on his future during the upcoming World Cup break, with his wife expected to have a big influence on the outcome he delivers.

The Latest: Campbell’s comments

Asked by Football Insider whether it was obvious that Guardiola would put pen to paper on fresh terms, Campbell said:

“I’m not sure it is.

“It has gone quite quiet. He should not be allowed to get down to the final seven months of his contract. If I was a Man City fan I would be worried.

“At the end of the day, he may walk at the end of the season. Guardiola is the key to everything. Right now, he is not secure.

“From a player’s and a fan’s point of view, it is a concern. There is an element of doubt.

“Listen, he might sign a new deal in the break. But there is a serious risk of things being unsettled.”

The Verdict: Tie him down

Guardiola is undoubtedly the one who holds all the power when it comes to this decision now, but the hierarchy have got to table him the best offer possible in a bid to tie him down.

The Spaniard’s numbers have been simply unbelievable during his time in the top flight, winning 276, drawing 43 and losing just 54 of his 373 matches in charge, averaging 2.34 points per game (Transfermarkt).

The Santpedor-born coach has also led his side to 11 titles, and this will only increase should he reaffirm his commitment to the Sky Blues in the weeks ahead.
