Scouts sent: Arsenal make first move to sign “astonishing” £35m defender

Arsenal have deployed chiefs to assess the performances of an overseas defender live in action ahead of a possible future move, according to a fresh report.

Gunners contract latest

According to 90min, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu have both entered talks to discuss new deals in the capital, and whilst that could be fantastic news for the long-term future of the club should they both put pen to paper, there may well be a problem in the here and now.

During Tuesday’s Premier League 4-3 victory over Luton Town, Tomiyasu was missing due to a calf injury, and with Mikel Arteta confirming after the game that he would be sidelined for a while, the manager may look to recruit a replacement at right-back.

Arsenal to seal new contract for "terrific" ace; he'll gain large wage hike

Arsenal lead the way in the Premier League and now look to be close to securing a new deal at the Emirates Stadium…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 3, 2023

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong has emerged as a potential target despite still having another five years remaining on his terms with Xabi Alonso's side (Bayer Leverkusen contracts), but it’s not the first time the 22-year-old has been on the radar at the Emirates Stadium.

The Netherlands international was reportedly in talks to join the Gunners over the summer, and while a deal failed to come to fruition before the deadline, the hierarchy appear to be taking a second bite of the cherry during the upcoming window.

Arsenal send scouts for Frimpong

According to 90min once again, Frimpong was watched by Arsenal and top-flight rivals Liverpool in Bayer Leverkusen's most recent fixture that took place last weekend.

"Arsenal and Liverpool were present to watch Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong during Sunday's Bundesliga clash with Borussia Dortmund, 90min understands.

"The 22-year-old has a £35m release clause which expires this summer – his deal as a whole runs until 2028 – and that figure would appear to represent tremendous market value given he has played consistently well in the Bundesliga and has experience of playing in both the Champions League and Europa League."

Bayer Leverkusen defenderJeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong is an "astonishing" player

While Frimpong is naturally a right-back, he seems to be stronger in the offensive aspect of his game which he’s proven this season by posting 10 contributions, six assists and four goals, in 13 Bundesliga appearances (Transfermarkt – Frimpong statistics).

The Amsterdam native also currently ranks in the 98th percentile for successful take-ons, showing just how much he loves to use his athletic pace, dribble past his marker and create as many chances as possible for himself and his fellow teammates in the final third (FBRef – Frimpong statistics).

Sponsored by Puma, Arteta’s target even has experience competing in both the Champions League and the Europa League, so not only may he possess a winning mentality at the top, but he also appears to be at the top of his age with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation.

For all of the positive qualities that he has in his locker, Frimpong would be an “astonishing” addition to any team, as described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, so this could be a no-brainer of a deal to pursue should the right opportunity present itself in January.

"No-brainer" – Journalist hints Spurs may strike "suitable" transfer deal

Journalist Dean Jones has suggested that Tottenham could strike a "suitable" transfer deal for one of their reported January targets.

Lange gets to work ahead of January

New sporting director Johan Lange has officially commenced work ahead of the looming winter window, after he arrived from Aston Villa on November 1. The Dane is tasked with backing manager Ange Postecoglou as the Spurs head coach currently contends with a wave of first team injury and suspension problems.

Tottenham's glaring lack of squad depth has been truly exposed of late, with as many as 10 players unavailable right now. Ashley Phillips, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur were most recently added to the growing Spurs injury list. Postecoglou, speaking to the press amid this crisis, confirmed late last week that plans are well underway to make new signings in the new year.

"I guess the challenge for us was they all came at once as it hasn't been staggered," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's injury problems, later sharing an update on Spurs' transfer plans.

"In terms of January, the planning is well away with that. Johan [Lange] has come in and he's leading that in terms of all the background work.

"My involvement and my own sort of ramp up to it as we get closer to January and understanding exactly what our requirements are at the moment, although work has been done in the background with Johan leading it and he's brought in some people to help him in that area. We'll work with him when the time is right."

Spurs reportedly want a left-sided centre-back, leading to links with Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly as one example, while there are also suggestions that Postecoglou wants a new winger at Tottenham. One of the targets to shore up Spurs' attacking options is Al-Ittihad forward Jota, a player who Postecoglou knows very well from his time at Celtic.

Tottenham could strike "suitable" Jota deal

The Portuguese could leave Al-Ittihad on loan in the winter, and Tottenham are a reported potential destination for Jota. Speaking to GiveMeSport, reporter Jones commented on the links and says Spurs could strike a "suitable" deal for Jota if they decide to go down that route. The journalist also says this would be a "no-brainer" move considering the terms available.

Celtic's former forward Jota.

"We still have to consider that Tottenham aren't going to just sign players based on a hunch because that's not the way they're going to do things anymore," said Jones.

"Your stats have to fit, specifically, with the vision of the future. But I think Jota would probably do that anyway, in terms of what Tottenham are going to be looking for from a player in that position.

"I think it is a bit of a no-brainer that Tottenham try to get this deal done because even the terms of it might be quite suitable."

The 24-year-old was an "exciting" player at Celtic (Alan Hutton), with Postecoglou really getting the best out of him north of the border. Indeed, perhaps the Australian can replicate that success with Jota at Spurs.

Tight schedule could force Afghanistan, Bangladesh to rest players for dead-rubber clash

Bangladesh will have to travel to Dubai after the match to meet India in the Super Four on Friday, while Afghanistan will stay put in Abu Dhabi, where they will meet Pakistan

The Preview by Mohammad Isam19-Sep-20182:19

Should Afghanistan and Bangladesh rest key players?

Big PictureHaving already qualified for the Super Four stage after knocking out Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will play the last league fixture in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. The result of the match is truly inconsequential: no matter who finishes top of their respective groups, the tournament has been scheduled in such a manner that Bangladesh will face India in the first Super Four match on Friday, while Afghanistan will play Pakistan. This means Afghanistan can stay put in Abu Dhabi after the match, while Bangladesh will need to pack their bags after the match and head to Dubai to meet India the next day. Both teams could rest players, but the extra travel puts a greater strain on Bangladesh. They have some injury issues, so resting Shakib Al Hasan (finger) and Mushfiqur Rahim (rib) would make sense. It would also make sense for their captain Mashrafe Mortaza to rest on Thursday, instead of taking on the strain of back-to-back games for what is essentially a dead rubber. The likes of Abu Hider, Nazmul Islam and Ariful Haque will look to gain more exposure ahead of bigger challenges.Afghanistan will focus on a familiar template: bat steadily for much of their 50 overs and look up to their seamers to provide support to their in-form spinners.Rahmat Shah’s 72 off 90 balls against Sri Lanka in the previous match backed up a solid start from the openers and allowed the big-hitters to go after the bowlers in the end overs. Captain Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran, meanwhile, will look to make more substantial contributions with the bat, while Hashmatullah Shahidi, who made 37 against Sri Lanka, will hope to capitalise on such starts. But the key will be the three spinners – Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Nabi. Bangladesh had a hard time against Rashid in the three T20Is in June this year. Spurs: Tottenham "will" listen to bids for star after important "change"

Tottenham Hotspur "will" consider winter window approaches for one "fantastic" player after a situation "change" at Spurs.

How have Spurs started this season?

Ange Postecoglou has guided his new team to second in the Premier League standings after an absolutely exceptional start to the 2023/2024 season. Spurs are enjoying a brand new lease of life under the Australian, despite some early doubt surrounding the former Celtic coach. Postecoglou's lack of experience in major European divisions made his appointment an arguable risk, but so far, he's proving all of his doubters very wrong.

A completely new-look Spurs side, compared to that of Antonio Conte's last term, remain unbeaten over their opening seven league matches. The north Londoners have even scored just as many goals as league champions Man City, winning five games in all and seriously exciting supporters with a fresh brand of attack-minded football. Tottenham next take on Luton Town this Saturday, prior to another international break, and the odds heavily favour a routine win for Postecoglou's imperious Lilywhites.

While the likes of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are now thriving among Postecoglou's main starters, despite being outcasts under Conte, but the same cannot be said for a few others.

Will Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leave Tottenham?

The player to have suffered most since Postecoglou's arrival at Tottenham has, arguably, been Denmark international star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The former Southampton star was a lynchpin of Conte's midfield last term, scoring four goals and assisting five others in 35 league appearances.

However, Hojbjerg has been a victim of Postecoglou's new system at Spurs this season, with there being no room for his influence as Tottenham's manager looks to prefer the dual midfield pivot of Bissouma and Sarr. The 28-year-old can feel hard done by this, as Hojbjerg was one of the club's most consistent performers last season and has been since his arrival in 2020.

Nevertheless, his "radical change" in situation means Tottenham "will" make Hojbjerg available for transfer in the January window. Juventus are named as major suitors for the midfielder, who have made contact already. This has spiked interest from Hojbjerg and his agents, with Juve believing he can be a real difference-maker. That is according to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

The "fantastic" player could well be a hot commodity when the window reopens, and it is little surprise given Hojbjerg's quality and reliability in the centre of midfield. Indeed, the Dane was once called an "invaluable" cog in Tottenham's system.

"He’s proven already this season what an important player he has become under Conte, " said Noel Whelan to Football Insider in 2022.

"He has become more consistent, and he’s a permanent fixture on the teamsheet straight away. I can understand why Real Madrid want him, because he’s playing like one of the best midfield players – not just in the Premier League, but in Europe.

“I think they’ve got to try and do what they can to keep him, and I didn’t think I’d be saying that after some of his performances when he first signed. What he’s doing right now is invaluable for that front three at Spurs.”

Kohli not setting out to 'prove himself' in England

On his last tour of the country in 2014, he only made 134 runs in ten Test innings at an average of 13.40

Nagraj Gollapudi at Edgbaston31-Jul-2018134 runs, 10 Test innings, average 13.40.Tell those numbers to a genuine cricket fan and they will let you know they are from Virat Kohli’s only Test series in England, in 2014.To be known as one of the best in Test cricket, it is important that a batsman succeeds in England. That is the general view held by the privileged lot that have succeeded at the highest level. It is fair to say that Kohli is yet to prove himself as a Test batsman in England. But Kohli does not think so. Back in England four years after that 2014 tour, Kohli is now India’s Test captain. He is No. 2 on the ICC Test rankings. And he remains unfussed about what happened four years ago. On the eve of the first Test, he was asked whether he found it amusing or irritating when people felt he still had a point to prove in England as a batsman, and Kohli said he felt neither. “I don’t know. Back in the day when I did not know better these things used to bother me because I used to read a lot.”According to Kohli, he has long since stopped getting swayed by outside emotions, and he does not consume anything written or said in the media. Doing that, Kohli said, allowed him to have a clear mind and helped retain his focus on his batting. “If I waste my energy on all these things I am compromising on my mindset already because when I walk out to bat I have the bat in hand, not people on the outside who write and predict things. I need to be in the most convincing and the most clear mental space I can be. That happens when I am just focused on what I need to do.”Soon, Kohli will finish a decade in international cricket, which wasn’t something he had envisioned when he started out. “I did not think 10 years ago, very soon I am going to complete 10 years, sitting here in my career. So I have no complaints whatsoever. And I am not in a frame of mind to prove myself in any country. I just want to perform for the team. Obviously, I want to score runs for the team. And I am going to take Indian cricket forward.”This will be the third five-Test series Kohli and India have played since 2014. All three have been against England. In 2014, England won 3-1. India then routed England 4-0 in the 2016-17 home series. So are India, the No.1 Test team, the favourites or the underdogs this time? Kohli refused to get distracted by any such billing. “It doesn’t matter. Whether you are a favourite or an underdog you still have to go out there and do well. If you are underdog, it is not a given the pressure will only be on the opposition. Or if you are favourites, it is not certain that the underdog will come out and just be fearless the whole time. I think it is the balance that is required.”Whether you want to act as an underdog or favourite it is in your own head. You need professionalism more than feeling like an underdog or starting as a favourite. That is something we want to do as a team: we want to be consistent and professional.”

Manchester United: Marcus Rashford’s goal record vs Burnley

Manchester United will visit Turf Moor to face Burnley this weekend as they look to stop the rot in the Premier League.

If Erik ten Hag’s side are to get back to winning ways on Saturday night, Marcus Rashford could be the difference maker.

We at Football FanCast have looked into the history of this fixture to gauge what we can expect from Rashford when his side travel slightly further north.

What is Marcus Rashford’s goal record against Burnley?

ansu-fati-marcus-rashford-tottenham-transfer-premier-league

Marcus Rashford has come up against Burnley 11 times in all competitions and whilst his team has never lost, his personal record doesn’t stand out massively.

Rashford has scored one Premier League goal against them from 10 meetings and then he also scored in his only EFL Cup clash with Clarets. The most recent meeting was that EFL Cup fixture, though, so he comes into this outing having scored in the previous one against these opponents.

What is Marcus Rashford’s assist record against Burnley?

Marcus Rashford vs Burnley

Marcus Rashford’s assist record against Burnley doesn’t differ at all from his goal record, contributing two assists, both of which came in the league.

Both of his assists against the newly promoted side came in the 2020/21 season, one in either game as Manchester United won by an aggregate scoreline of 4-1.

How many goal contributions does Marcus Rashford have against Burnley?

Totalling up the goals and assists from Rashford against Burnley and he has amassed four goal contributions across 11 games.

The last two league meetings, which came in the 2021/22 season, saw him left on the bench at Old Trafford and then he played the majority of the Turf Moor clash.

What is Marcus Rashford’s head-to-head record against Burnley?

As previously mentioned, Manchester United have dominated this fixture since Marcus Rashford burst onto the scene, his side having not lost once.

Seven of the 11 games have gone the way of United with the other four ending in draws. His first-ever league meeting with them was a draw and the most recent one saw the game end honours even as well.

What is Marcus Rashford’s record at Burnley?

Six of the 10 Premier League meetings featuring Rashford took place on Burnley’s home soil across six seasons. It doesn’t total out at 12 clashes due to the aforementioned game that he watched on from the sidelines and then he was absent from another Old Trafford outing, a Burnley win in fact, due to a back injury.

The first five of these games at Turf Moor went the way of Manchester United and they didn’t concede a single goal along the way. They won those games by an aggregate of 8-0 and then the February 2022 matchup finished 1-1, Paul Pogba opening the scoring before Jay Rodriguez struck back for the home side.

Who has Marcus Rashford scored the most goals against?

England'sMarcusRashfordcelebrates

It won’t be surprising to read that with just two goals against them, Burnley aren’t Marcus Rashford’s favourite opponents.

In all competitions, Leicester City have conceded to Rashford the most with eight strikes in 16 meetings. Across these games, Man United have won 10, drawn four and lost two.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool come next with Rashford having scored six times against each of them.

Who does Marcus Rashford have the most goal contributions against?

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

Rashford has eight goals and one assist against Leicester City so they are towards the top end when it comes to goal contributions, but they’re not at the top.

The England international has nine goal contributions against West Ham United and Chelsea whilst he has hit double digits, with 10 contributions, when facing Newcastle United and Arsenal.

How many goals does Marcus Rashford have in September?

Marcus Rashford has certainly enjoyed playing in September and particularly in the Premier League. In all but one September of his professional career he has found the back of the net in the league and on two occasions, he bagged twice.

Overall, Rashford has scored 14 times in September, breaking down as one Champions League goal against FC Basel in 2017, four EFL Cup strikes and then nine Premier League goals.

And this September is no different with the England international having found the back of the net against Arsenal earlier on in the month. However, it was not enough to help United to victory with the Red Devils seeing the points go to the Gunners late on in the game.

In the only league game since the defeat in north London, Rashford failed to get his name on the scoresheet against Brighton & Hove Albion.

What is Marcus Rashford’s overall Manchester United goal record?

Man Unites starMarcusRashford

For Manchester United, Rashford has made 364 appearances, totaling over 24,000 minutes. In that time has scored 124 goals.

77 of these strikes have come in the Premier League and he is ahead of names such as Daniel Sturridge, Gabriel Jesus and Luis Suarez in the scoring charts for the division.

What is Marcus Rashford’s overall Manchester United assist record?

Rashford is best known as a goalscorer, but his assist numbers are certainly impressive, showing that he is a valuable contributor on both ends of it.

For Manchester United, he has 69 total assists with 45 of these coming in the Premier League and then 12 coming on the continent, in either the Champions League or the Europa League.

Rangers: Beale must bin Dessers for £26k-p/w ‘Duracell bunny’

Glasgow Rangers may have won three successive games following their 1-0 win over Motherwell in the Premiership last the weekend, yet the boos ringing out at Ibrox when the full-time whistle went tells a different story with regard to their performances.

Michael Beale has been in charge of the Light Blues for ten months, yet the club simply don’t have an identity or playing style and this has resulted in dull, lethargic football being displayed.

The Gers face Livingston this evening in the quarter-finals of the League Cup and with Celtic failing to progress to this stage, the club have a wonderful chance of winning the trophy for the first time since 2011.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast, plus another few injury worries, Beale may make sweeping changes across the team for tonight’s tie.

What’s the Rangers team news vs Livingston?

Assistant manager Neil Banfield spoke to the media before the match yesterday and gave an update on the squad, revealing an injury to one of the club's better players this term – Rabbi Matondo.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

He said: “Rabbi has sustained a knee injury, I think he is going to be six weeks. We have got the squad prepared for tomorrow. He is added to the injury list, which has come through the games and is part of what we have got. We build the squad for tomorrow and we go again against Livingston tomorrow night.”

The Welsh winger has enjoyed a resurgence this term having failed to live up to expectations during the 2022/23 season. Before suffering his knee injury against Motherwell, he had scored twice and grabbed two assists while establishing himself as a first-team regular and this will be a blow, not only to the player, but also to Beale.

Youngsters such as Zak Lovelace and Bailey Rice could very well get a chance to showcase their talents at Ibrox this evening, especially with Matondo, Tom Lawrence and Todd Cantwell missing out, but Beale should be dropping one player to the bench – Cyriel Dessers.

How has Cyriel Dessers performed this season?

The former QPR boss sold Fashion Sakala and Antonio Colak this summer, while Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent both left upon the expiration of their contracts and the club have gone through a major upheaval with regard to their attacking options.

New arrivals included Danilo, Sam Lammers and Abdallah Sima who joined along with Dessers, yet the jury is still out on these four and whether they will be improvements on the players Beale moved on.

Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers.

The Nigerian international striker cost the club £4.5m from Italian side Cremonese, and although he scored six times in Serie A last term, he hasn’t exactly lit up Ibrox during his first few months in Glasgow, that’s for sure.

Indeed, across 11 games since joining, Dessers has managed to find the back of the net only three times and this is simply not good enough.

He even ranks in just 20th place across the squad for overall Sofascore rating (6.84) while ranking first for big chances missed (four), tenth for big chances created (one) and 15th for successful dribbles per game (0.4), clearly indicating that he is failing to demonstrate the attributes which led Beale shelling out £4.5m for him in the first place.

He did score the winner against the Steelmen last weekend, but the manager must drop him to the bench this evening and unleash a player who has returned to prominence this season following an injury-disrupted 2022/23 season – Kemar Roofe.

Will Kemar Roofe start for Rangers vs Livingston?

The 30-year-old is now in his fourth term as a Rangers player, yet he has played only 85 times for the club, starting on just 46 occasions due to his injury problems which have been well-documented.

These have led him to miss a staggering 84 matches during his three years at Ibrox. When he has been fit however, Roofe is arguably one of the finest forwards at the club, scoring 37 goals and registering seven assists which included 18 during his debut season in 2020/21, which saw the Gers claim their first title in a decade.

Former manager Steven Gerrard heaped praise on Roofe then, calling him a “Duracell bunny” due to his relentless energy and never-say-die attitude and these attributes have been key in his rejuvenation this season.

Indeed, the £26k-per-week forward has already made more appearances this term (seven) than the whole of 2022/23 (six) and has scored once and grabbed an assist.

The former Anderlecht attacker has created one big chance for the side in the league this term while recovering 2.2 balls per game and winning 1.6 aerial duels per game – a success rate of 53% – and this physical presence has been key whenever he has started a game.

Rangers Review journalist Jonny McFarlane hailed his abilities just a week into the new campaign, saying: “Rangers need to be bringing a fit Kemar Roofe into the fold more readily. Proven at this level while others get up to the pace of Scotland and demands of Rangers. Looking a bit flat up there in these early domestic skirmishes.”

A win tonight would secure a passage into the last four for the third season in a row, and it is imperative that Beale wins the League Cup this term, especially with Celtic being dumped out in the previous round.

Roofe is back fit and healthy after a horrendous 12 months, and he has already shown exactly what he offers to the team when he is chosen in the starting XI.

Dessers has thus far failed to live up to the hype and unless he starts adding more goals to his tally, Beale may utilise the other options in his first-team squad.

The Jamaica international has a more well-rounded game than that of Dessers and can not only score but is also able to press effectively and track back while using his physicality to good effect against opposition defenders.

It will be another tough game against a team that tend to deploy the low block when playing Rangers, but unleashing Roofe could well cause Livingston plenty of problems.
