West Brom now make contact to sign "quality" free agent ahead of Birmingham

After losing out in the Championship playoffs semi-finals last season, West Bromwich Albion are looking to improve their squad during the summer transfer window by providing Carlos Corberan with a new attacking talent.

Baggies targeting summer signings

The latest news out of The Hawthorns has suggested that West Brom are eager to bring in a number of new signings this summer. Moussa Diarra is the most recent name linked with a move to the West Midlands with the Baggies reportedly keen on adding the free-agent defender to their ranks this summer.

With reinforcements at the back clearly a priority for the Baggies, the club are now set to confirm the signing of IF Brommapojkarna defender Torbjorn Heggem. The 25-year-old is set for a medical with West Brom ahead of a permanent move to the Hawthorns.

Whilst defensive recruits are clearly high on West Brom's shopping list, the club are still eager to bring in fresh faces in attack with the club set to battle their rivals for a Championship proven free agent.

West Brom move for Wednesday want-away

As first reported by Birmingham World, West Bromwich Albion are expected to challenge Birmingham City to sign Josh Windass on a free transfer. The 30-year-old's current deal with Sheffield Wednesday is set to expire on the 30th June and with talks over a new deal stalling Windass now looks set to depart Hillsborough at the end of this month.

Whilst the two Midlands outfits are among the numerous Championship sides expressing an interest in the attacker, the report from Birmingham World states that the Baggies have now made contact with the player’s representatives to gauge his level of interest in a move to the Hawthorns.

Windass has endured something of a mixed spell with the Owls but ended last season as one of Danny Rohl's most important players. The attacker scored in all three of Wednesday's final league games as the South Yorkshire outfit defied the odds to stave off relegation.

The 30-year-old may be best remembered by the Baggies' faithful from Wednesday's victory against West Brom back in April in which Windass notched the winning goal as his side ran away 3-0 winners on the day.

Rohl has been outspoken on Windass' performances this season with the Owls' boss taking the time to praise the attacker's development, telling the press:

"For Josh the last weeks were not easy, a big injury and (fitness problems) again and again."

"But I said to him he also has to take responsibility. If you want to be a good player and a strong leader on the pitch you have to show up. It makes no sense just to talk. He fought for every inch, he showed his quality."

With Coberan's side massively struggling for depth in attack, a player like Windass would be perfect for the Baggies. Able to play anywhere across the forward line including as a central striker, the 30-year-old would be a massive asset for West Brom next season.

£89 million Chelsea ace may push to leave as new doubt emerges over future

One Chelsea player faces "new doubt" over his future and could push to leave Stamford Bridge on one condition, with new head coach Enzo Maresca set to have a real influence.

Players who could be sold by Chelsea this summer

Ian Maatsen has joined Thiago Silva out of the Chelsea exit door, with the highly-rated Dutch full-back completing his Aston Villa medical on Monday and Omari Kelleyman going the other way in a separate £19 million deal (Nizaar Kinsella).

Chelsea prepared to bid for new priority target in £50 million forward

The west Londoners are keen on bringing in a new attacker or two.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 25, 2024

Chelsea and Villa agreed on a £35 million-plus fee for Maatsen, shaking hands on a club-to-club deal last week, with the Villans then sorting out personal terms. The fee received for him will come as a significant boost for co-Chelsea sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, who are tasked with bolstering Maresca's squad ahead of next season.

The 22-year-old performed exceptionally on loan at Borussia Dortmund last season, helping them reach the Champions League final, but there was little room in Chelsea's already-bloated squad for Maatsen. Attention now turns to who could follow the defender out, and there are many names up for the chopping block.

Romelu Lukaku, Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher, Malang Sarr, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Omari Hutchinson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Marc Cucurella and Conor Gallagher are all players who could be sold by Chelsea this summer, according to various reports from the last few months.

Despite some reports, Chelsea are under no pressure to sell by June 30 to comply with PSR, according to Sky Sports. However, they will have to sell before next year's deadline of June 30, or risk facing stiff sanctions from the Premier League.

Time is on their side in this regard, but it will nevertheless be difficult to find potential buyers for every single one of the aforementioned players. Another squad member who faces uncertainty, according to Football Insider journalist Pete O'Rourke, is winger Mykhailo Mudryk.

Mykhailo Mudryk could push to leave Chelsea

As per his information, Mudryk could push to leave Chelsea if Maresca doesn't give him the necessary game time, and he's facing a crucial pre-season as a result.

His future is under "new doubt", and may well be an exit nominee despite only joining in January of last year for a mammoth £89 million fee. The Ukraine star has gone on to make 58 appearances in all competitions for the Blues since putting pen to paper on a transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk

He's scored just seven goals and racked up four assists in that time, though Mudryk has been praised in flashes and even compared to Arjen Robben by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

“Mykhaylo Mudryk looks the real deal, some of his clips today were outstanding," said Gerrard on TNT Sports.

"He reminded me a little bit of Arjen Robben, his footwork, how quick he is, how he manipulates the ball, I would be very excited if I was Chelsea.”

Palmer 2.0: Chelsea can sign Maresca a "superstar" Olise alternative

Cole Palmer’s performance levels during his first campaign as a Chelsea player have been absolutely phenomenal.

Truth be told, without the 22-year-old, who knows where the Blues would be right now? But one thing is for certain: they’d be much worse off.

The England international has well and truly exceeded every expectation, scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists in 29 starts, the most goal involvements in the league.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a Chelsea target who could just become Palmer 2.0 under Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea’s search for another Palmer

According to a report from GiveMeSport earlier this week, Chelsea are in the race to sign Eberechi Eze – having also shown an interest in teammate Michael Olise, alongside Manchester United.

It’s reported that a fee of at least £60m will be demanded by Crystal Palace for their star man, but Tottenham Hotspur are set to rival the Blues for his signature.

Given that the Eagles number ten has been simply outstanding this season, it’s no surprise to see that the most elite English clubs are interested.

Over the course of the campaign, the midfielder made 27 appearances, scoring an impressive 11 goals and providing four assists in the process.

His performances may have just earned him a spot on the plane to Germany for the European Championships with England, which just proves how influential he’s been.

Why Eze could be the next Palmer

Based on Eze’s statistics from this season alone, it’s clear to see that the attacking midfielder has plenty of similarities to Palmer.

This is both in terms of their style of play and their statistics, which is why they’ve been classed as 'similar players’ by FBref – when looking at Premier League players.

As displayed above, the duo are extremely technical players who thrive when operating in tight central zones, where they can get on the half-turn and create magic.

They also both bring goals from midfield, which would make Chelsea incredibly dangerous in the final third due to the unpredictability that they provide.

On top of that, Eze is well and truly the heartbeat at Palace; he’s the instigator in turning defence into attack, which the Chelsea faithful have seen Palmer do all season long.

Just like Palmer, Eze can play across the attack due to his insane technical class, but the former Queens Park Rangers ace could even play slightly deeper, as shown by his four tackles and seven duels won against Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

However, the main difference between Palmer and Eze is that the latter is slightly more dynamic, using his silky dribbling to weave past the opposition, which is why Palace’s number ten has been described as a “superstar” by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Furthermore, as you can see from the graphic above, if Chelsea did opt for Eze over Olise, they’d be getting a player who’s just as talented and just as impactful in the final third.

Overall, the signing of Eze would be absolutely fantastic for Chelsea, and his position in a left-sided midfield role under Maresca could genuinely take him to the level of Palmer.

Man Utd eyeing £86m star who’s an even bigger wonderkid than Mainoo

Now that the 2023/24 Premier League season is complete, Sir Jim Ratcliffe can finally undertake his first transfer window as Manchester United owner.

It’s clear that wholesale changes will occur at the club after an underwhelming season, with only a select few safe from being put up for sale.

However, as players depart, others must arrive, but this time around, it’s been reported that younger players will be prioritised over ready-made superstars.

With that in mind, there is a potential summer signing who could very well be an even bigger wonderkid than Kobbie Mainoo.

Man Utd eye up promising defender

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Man United are eyeing a move for the highly-rated Jorrel Hato.

Having scouted the defender for some time, he’s become a player that the Red Devils admire and could look to sign this summer.

However, they won’t be alone in their bid to sign Hato, with Arsenal also interested in acquiring his services and in pole position to do so.

In order to sign the Ajax ace, a report – via TEAMTalk – in March stated that the club will demand a huge £86m, which could be a stumbling block for both Premier League sides.

Why Hato could be a bigger talent than Mainoo

Mainoo’s rise to becoming a consistent first-team starter this season has been a joy to watch, arguably one of the best moments to have occurred over the campaign.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been absolutely immense over his 24 Premier League starts, showing the maturity and mentality of a seasoned professional.

Just six months ago, Mainoo was slowly announcing himself to the world, but after scoring three wonderful Premier League goals, there’s a genuine chance that he’s on the plane to Germany with England this summer.

Hato is also a player who’s followed an identical path to first-team glory as Mainoo, stepping up for a struggling side and performing at an extremely high level despite being just 18 years old – one year the United midfielder's junior.

As you can see by the table above, Hato is already performing at such a high level, which is completely remarkable considering his age.

The left-footed defender has started 33 matches in the Eredivisie this season – more than Mainoo – operating in three different roles: at centre-back, at left-centre back in a three, and as a left-back.

It’s clear from the statistics that Hato is a fantastic technician, boating incredible passing range and accuracy, which is why he’s been labelled as “magnificent” by football scout Jacek Kulig.

On top of that, he’s a dominant defender who’s not afraid to enter duels, taking on a proactive approach that would suit a team that opts for a high line, as shown by his tackles, interceptions, and balls recovered.

Furthermore, not only has the number four developed into a consistent key player for Ajax, but he’s taken on the responsibility of the captain’s armband this season, which highlights how much he’s valued as a talent. Not even Mainoo can manage that.

To be performing at an even higher standard than two of United’s key centre-halves this season just proves how incredible he truly is, and he could just be an even bigger prospect than Mainoo.

But one thing is crystal clear: Man United must do all they can to sign Hato this summer.

Asghar Afghan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman give Afghanistan unassailable 2-0 lead

The captain’s 28-ball 49 helped the side to a formidable total before the spinner picked up three wickets to restrict Ireland

The Report by Hemant Brar08-Mar-2020Asghar Afghan scored a 28-ball 49 to lift Afghanistan to 184 for 4 before Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s three-wicket haul restricted Ireland to 163 for 6 in the second T20I in Greater Noida. The 21-run victory meant Afghanistan now have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.Afghanistan had a slow start after opting to bat as their openers Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz struggled for the timing on a sluggish pitch. The Ireland seamers also didn’t allow any room to Zazai who eventually fell to legspinner Gareth Delany for a 33-ball 28.Gurbaz used his feet against Delany to hit a couple of sixes but despite that Afghanistan were 85 for 2 after 13 overs. Asghar, who too was struggling to find the middle of the bat till then, suddenly starting connecting his hits. He struck six, four and four off successive Boyd Rankin deliveries to take the side past 100 in the 14th over.Craig Young was the next to suffer. Asghar smashed him for two fours and two sixes as the 16th over of the innings produced 25 runs. Going for another big hit, Asghar holed out to long-on and fell one short of his fifty. Najibullah Zadran and Gulbadin Naib hit two sixes each in the final over as take Afghanistan to a formidable total. After giving away 99 runs in the last seven overs, Ireland started their chase positively before Mujeeb dismissed Kevin O’Brien and Paul Stirling to reduce them to 37 for 2. Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector kept finding the boundaries though and took Ireland to 90 for 3 after ten overs. Then, Rashid Khan was introduced to the attack. After conceding five in his first over, he dismissed Balbirnie in the next for a 35-ball 46. From the other end, Nabi too didn’t allow any easy runs. As a result, Ireland were left needing 51 from the last four overs.Tector took 12 off the first three balls of the 17th over, bowled by Mujeeb, but the bowler came back strongly. He not only bowled the next three balls dots but also got rid of Tector.Ireland needed 26 from the final over – Afghanistan too had got 26 from their 20th – but Shapoor Zadran conceded only four to seal the match and the series.

Sky Sports: "World-class" £320,000-a-week star considering Liverpool move

Liverpool could have been handed the perfect tonic to Jurgen Klopp's impending departure with a potential "world-class" midfielder eyeing up a move to Anfield.

Liverpool slip up but three still to play for

Sunday's 4-3 FA Cup defeat at the hands of Manchester United ensured that Liverpool will not be taking home four trophies in Klopp's final season, but picking up three remains firmly on the table.

They have already bagged the Carabao Cup courtesy of an extra-time winner from Virgil van Dijk against Chelsea, while they sit joint top in the Premier League with Arsenal travelling to take on third-placed Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on March 31st.

Given that at least one of those two sides will have to drop points, it could see Liverpool open up a gap atop the Premier League, or at the very least improve their standing among the top three.

They also stand a strong chance of winning the Europa League, a competition that Klopp is yet to win during his time on Merseyside having lost in the final in his first season in charge. They face Serie A side Atalanta in the last eight before possibly taking on one of Marseille and Benfica in the semi-final, and they could yet face Bayer Leverkusen in the final, with plenty of eyes on Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.

The German's departure will see plenty of change at Anfield, and it is likely that any new boss will need time to adapt the squad to their own needs. However, they could be handed a boost with one world-class talent considering the switch this summer.

Kimmich considering Liverpool move

That comes in the form of Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who is reportedly open to leaving the Allianz Arena this summer and has been linked with a move to Anfield. Arguably one of the best in his position, the 29-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel and has rarely completed 90 minutes this season.

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich.

That has not dented his ability though. Back in 2021, then Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spoke in glowing terms about the midfielder.

"It is no exaggeration to say that Joshua Kimmich is the very embodiment of world-class. There's only one Joshua Kimmich and we're very glad he plays at Bayern."

But that may not be the case for long. According to Sky Sports Germany and reporter Florian Plettenberg, he is ready for change. So too are Bayern, with a report claiming that the German giants are 'prepared to sell Kimmich this summer if a suitable offer comes in' and that for his part, Kimmich is 'open to discussions with potential buyers'.

With his contract due to expire in the summer of 2025, it could well be a bargain buy for any top club, but not all of them will be able to enter the bidding war. That comes as it is added that "only five top clubs" are under consideration for the 29-year-old, namely Manchester City, Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Arsenal.

Of those, Barcelona may be unlikely to finance a move, while Arsenal have already spent in that area, bringing in Declan Rice last summer. Real Madrid also appear well stocked, with Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, all of which could leave Liverpool with a relatively clear run at the Bayern star.

One stumbling block could be his wages, with Kimmich thought to earn around £320,000 per week with the Bavarian side. However, if Liverpool are prepared to stump that sort of money up, they could have a perfect addition for their transition period.

Tottenham told to accept eight-figure bid for in-form player this summer

Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy have been told that one club could make an eight-figure bid for an in-form player, and they'd be wise to accept.

The likes of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have played their way into Postecoglou's plans since the Australian's arrival last summer, despite being outcasts under Antonio Conte the season prior.

Tottenham's head coach is also getting the very best out of Richarlison, who netted nine goals in 10 Premier League games prior to his recent injury. While there have been many success stories of Postecoglou's reign, some members of the Spurs squad are also deemed more surplus to requirements.

Midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been tipped to leave this summer, with the Dane recently changing agents in a potential signal that he is ready to go and get more game time at another club.

Bryan Gil is also on the list of players who could quit N17 in the near future, while there is the small matter of Spurs' many loaned out players. One of them, Wales international defender Joe Rodon, has arguably enjoyed the best stint away of any current loanee.

Rodon's made 33 Championship appearances under Daniel Farke as Leeds chase promotion straight back to the top flight. There are reports, as a result, that Leeds could look to sign Rodon permanently for next season.

Tottenham told to accept eight-figure Rodon bid

Spurs expert John Wenham, speaking to Tottenham News this week, suggests that Leeds could make a £10 million bid for Rodon in the summer – and it's one which the Lilywhites should accept.

“He is putting in some really strong displays in the Championship, but he will only have one year left on his deal in North London this summer, and I don’t see Spurs offering him a new contract.

“Things just haven’t worked out for Rodon at Tottenham, and the club must now look at getting the best possible deal for the centre-back. If Leeds were to get promoted, I could see them making an offer of around £10million, which Tottenham would be wise to accept.”

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

The centre-back has been praised for his performances by Farke this season, with Rodon becoming a mainstay of Leeds' promotion-chasing back line.

“I wouldn’t speak too much about just one player because it was also important that our offensive players did their job," said Farke on Rodon, later praising the 26-year-old.

“Joe [Rodon] belongs to our last row, he had to be there with many clearances, was an aerial threat, even with a little cut under his eyebrow, he was willing to go [on], so he showed warrior mentality.

“That’s exactly what you need if you want to be successful at such a tough place – I think he was excellent today.”
