Real Madrid stopper Courtois has returned to the Belgium team for the first time since June 2023 after falling out with previous coach Domenico Tedesco. The goalkeeper's return has caused controversy and led to rival stopper Casteels, who was No. 1 during Courtois' absence, to quit the national team by way of protest.

Courtois spoke about his decision to play for Belgium again at a press conference and admitted he had some sympathy with Casteels. He said: "I can understand Koen, because he was number one and now I'm returning. But the football association wanted me back from the start, so I made myself available again. It's not like I arranged all this myself. The other things he said, that there is even more dissatisfaction? No idea. If you say something, you should also name it, I think."

WHAT TIELEMANS SAID

Belgium team-mate Tielemans also shared his thoughts and was quick to defend the Real Madrid star. He explained: "We certainly didn't need that bomb from Koen in this situation. Of course it was discussed, but the most important thing is that Thibaut was able to clarify everything and tell his story. The most important thing is that he realises that certain things went wrong for the group of players, but that he indicated that he didn't mean it that way."

Courtois and Tielemans are currently preparing for two Nations League fixtures against Ukraine over the international break, with the goalkeeper keen to make amends. He added: "Well, in the end I can't do much more than perform on the field. To the fans I am very sorry that it turned out this way, but it didn't help that wrong or incomplete stories came out."

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Chelsea boss was in no mood to compromise with his approach after his side edged out Leicester City 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, courtesy of Marc Cucurella's 60th-minute strike. The home fans at Stamford Bridge were not satisfied with the performance of the team, though, as they often voiced their frustration with loud reactions to the hosts' patient build-up play. Maresca, however, has no intention of changing things after securing an important three points.

  • WHAT ENZO MARESCA SAID

During the match, midfielder Enzo Fernandez was jeered by his own fans after he passed the ball backwards, but Maresca later explained that the Argentine was simply following instructions. Speaking to reporters, the Italian coach said: "Yeah, but the good thing is that Fernandez knows that if he doesn’t play back, I will change him. If the ‘keeper plays long, I will change him. This is what we have."

He added: "My message to Filip (Jorgensen) was: "If you play long ball, I will change you.’ So he was just doing what I told him to."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 45-year-old also sent out a message to the Blues fans as he said: "The people have to understand this is our way, our style, and this is the way we are going to play. When a team creates the amount of chances we created, you have to be happy. It’s not easy. Leicester, until minute 83, were 0-0 against Arsenal (actually minute 81, in a 2-0 loss on February 15); the same thing happened against (Manchester) City (they were beaten 2-0 on December 29, but only trailed by one until the 74th minute). If you think football is just a PlayStation (game) and you win easy, no way — every game is difficult. The way the players have done is fantastic.

"We need our fans. On my Instagram, I said two days ago our Champions League (qualification) target will be with our fans supporting us, and especially when you play at home. We need them behind the players with the spirit they showed."

Liverpool legend Carragher courted controversy with an on-air 'joke' made during coverage of Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Porto in March 2024. His comment did not go down well, with Kate Scott and the rest of the CBS crew left feeling uncomfortable as red-faced apologies were quickly lined up.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Boxing trainer Malik, who has worked with former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, said in the aftermath of the incident: "If Kate gets upset then it's a really big deal to me and I'll give him a call and if he doesn't pick up my call, then I'll show up in a physical manner so we can talk like men."

  • WHAT MALIK SCOTT SAID

Scott has now told when asked if there was ever any chance of scores being settled in the ring: "I didn't have any plans on fighting Jamie. But at the same time, I put it out there because my wife was hurt and I'm here to protect my wife and that was that. But Jamie, when we see each other, we shake hands, give each other big daps, have a laugh and move on.

"Jamie and I always see each other, so it's not an intimidating thing. It's just a respect that men have with each other. That's all it is. I respect him, he respects me, and my wife respects him, and he's going to respect my wife. And he does respect my wife. There’s no grudge with Jamie at all. I love that whole panel."

    DID YOU KNOW?

Malik recently made a guest appearance on the CBS panel, during a European tie between Real Madrid and Manchester City at Santiago Bernabeu, during which he wore a hoodie that sported the names of the show’s cast with “Jamie” crossed out.

He added on that playful jab at Carragher: “Well I had that hoodie and we just put a little flare onto it for the show. It was good. People loved it.

“About six or seven months ago, Jamie Carragher was on the panel with my wife, Kate Scott, Thierry Henry, and Micah (Richards) – they were doing a game and it was an outside game and Kate was explaining to Jamie. that she was loyal to I believe a Manchester team (Manchester United).

“Jamie acted like he didn't hear it so he said ‘Loyal to who? Not to Malik.’ And that went pretty bad. And it was probably the wrong kind of joke. And it just got out and when the word got to me, I put a couple of statements out that really went crazy. I was just verbally protecting my wife on the internet about that thing Jamie said.

“So time goes by and here I am at the game the other day and I have my Champions League sweatshirt on and the best panel on sports is up there.

“They came to me asking would I hop on the last segment. I didn't have the hoodie like that but by the time I got up there I had Jamie’s name crossed out and they basically asked me what I had on so I opened the shirt and I said, ‘I've got to get me another one because I basically crossed Jamie’s name out on that’.

“That was a little get back at him from the beginning of the story, just the comment that he said about Kate. Then as the show went on they were asking me my favourite (on the panel). Of course, I'm going to say my wife. The one that I married is my favourite, Kate Scott. Then I said Micah. Then Jamie said, ‘Who's next?’ I looked at Jamie with a face and I said, ‘Don't you do it, Jamie’. And then we all had a good laugh and it was just good.

“It was a really good experience. That's a very good crew. Best panel in sports in my opinion, chemistry wise. The producer really hit it right on the button with them. They got a great thing going. It was incredible. They’ve got the right individuals on there and it was fun more than anything.”

Ajaz Patel: 'This is what dreams are made of'

“To be out here and pick up four wickets on the first day is pretty special, but at the same time the job is only half done.”

Vettori: Ajaz built pressure with his accuracy, consistency and fields

Left-arm spinners of Indian origin playing against India at the Wankhede Stadium has tended not to end well for the hosts. Monty Panesar has been part of two Test wins with England, in 2005-06 and 2012-13. And through the first session, New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel, bowing in Mumbai, might just have given them a flashback of bad memories. At one point his figures read 12-7-14-3, which included the wickets of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara for ducks.”Pretty cool,” Ajaz said of his day’s work. “This is what dreams are made of. To be out here and pick up four wickets on the first day is pretty special. At the same time the job is only half done. So we have got to make sure we turn up tomorrow and really work hard for the last six wickets.”Related

However, Ajaz enjoyed little support from the other end, with the other two spinners going for 66 runs in their 12 overs on a surface that the ball turned from the middle of the pitch on day one. One of them, Rachin Ravindra, was unwell while Ajaz had words of support for others too.”Everyone was out there working hard and poor old Rachin came down with a bug this morning,” Ajaz said. “He fought his way out there throughout the day. It is pretty impressive form the young man to be able to stick it out. It really shows his character. Tomorrow is a new day. We start fresh, and we go again. It is just about bowling in partnerships. I am sure we will turn up tomorrow.”Watch live cricket on ESPN+ in the US

India vs New Zealand is available in the US on ESPN+. You can subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to highlights of day one of the 2nd Test in English or in Hindi.

India ended the day 221 for 4 having been 80 for 3 at one point, which has already given India a handy advantage in this Test. Ajaz said New Zealand will need long periods of good bowling to claw their way back into the Test.”Test cricket is really about keeping it simple and consistently hitting good areas over a long period of time and challenging the batsmen over a long period,” Ajaz said. “Tomorrow’s game plan is very simple. Try and restrict them as much as possible. Bowl a lot of good balls. Force them to hit good balls as opposed to allowing them to hurt us with the bad ones. We just need to make sure we are consistent and in good areas for long periods of time.”There is definitely assistance out there for spin bowling. And we have got more bounce than we had in Kanpur. So as a spinner you still want to bowl and work hard and put it in the good area for a long time. It is really about keeping the game plan really simple and using the wicket as much as possible.”

Aston Villa eye opportunity as club consider low January bid for £50m star

Aston Villa chiefs are sensing a transfer opportunity as they look to back manager Unai Emery in the transfer market, with one club ready to consider a low January bid for a star who’d usually cost around £50 million.

Aston Villa face Tottenham in near-certain race for top four

Emery’s fairytale stint in charge of Villa has continued into the 2024/25 campaign, with the Midlands giants appearing near-certainties to be contending for a place in the Premier League’s top four yet again.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 31, 2024

They’ve also made an impressive start in Europe, beating German heavyweights Bayern Munich 1-0 on a historic night at Villa Park, whilst also clinching victories against Serie A side Bologna and Switzerland’s Young Boys.

While it is still very early days, with Villa to play their tenth Premier League game of the season against fellow potential European contenders Tottenham, it is pretty safe to say that Emery’s side are favourites to be up there with England’s elite once again.

Villa travel to north London on Sunday for a tough test at Spurs, who are looking to bounce back from their disappointing 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace last weekend. They’ve been very inconsistent this season – winning four, losing four and drawing one – while Emery’s only top-flight defeat so far came at the hands of title-chasing Arsenal back in August.

However, despite their contrasting records, Emery insists that Tottenham are favourites to beat Villa on Sunday.

“Tottenham is playing very well and they deserved more points than they have now,” said Emery ahead of Villa’s trip to Spurs.

“They beat Manchester City at home, playing with lots of players who will play on Sunday. Their style and idea is so, so strong. They have individually brilliant players. They signed Solanke and he is giving them a lot more ways to attack and be stronger than last year.

“They are the favourites in front of us for the season and for the match on Sunday. We are competing and we are really being confident, how we are doing our way. We even lost last year against them. We are trying to use a stronger structure to face them on Sunday. We are very excited and motivated, our fans, myself, the coaches, players and the club how we are increasing our level to be contenders with Tottenham, City, Chelsea and Newcastle. Competing with them to be in the top seven, top six or top five.”

Aston Villa sense opportunity to sign Loic Bade from Sevilla

In the background, transfer chief Monchi and NSWE are looking at ways to improve Emery’s squad with potential new additions.

Some reports claim Villa are prepared to bid for La Liga sensation Christantus Uche in January, while it appears that another Spanish top-flight star has earned admiring glances from Birmingham.

As per a media source from Spain, Sevilla defender Loic Bade is on Monchi’s agenda. The club wish to strengthen their central defensive options and it is believed that Aston Villa see Bade as an “opportunity” to bolster their defence for both now and the seasons ahead.

It is also claimed that, despite his mainstay status at Sevilla, they could sell for a “low” January offer compared to his £50 million release clause.

Joe Root on Ben Stokes: 'I just want my friend to be okay'

England captain recognises allrounder is irreplaceable as first Test looms

George Dobell02-Aug-2021Joe Root has admitted that the absence of Ben Stokes leaves a huge hole at the heart of England’s team, but insists his first consideration is for the well-being of his friend.Stokes has taken a break from the sport to focus on his mental well-being. While there has been no time-frame placed on his return, he is not currently expected to appear at any point in the LV= Insurance Test series against India. Quite apart from the non-physical issues, there is also a concern that the finger Stokes broke earlier this year could require a further operation. But although Root, the England captain, is candid about the enormity of the loss that Stokes’ absence represents, he is clear that there are more important things in life. And he is adamant that Stokes, who at times over the last few years has carried this England team, has earned the fulsome support of everyone involved in the England set-up.”From my point of view, I just want my friend to be okay,” Root said from Trent Bridge on Monday. “Anyone who knows Ben knows he always puts other people first. Now is an opportunity for him to put himself first, to take time to look after himself and get to a good place again.Related

Are the India of 2021 better than the India of 2018?

“Cricket has to be a secondary thought. It’s a long way down the line and he should take as much time as he needs. He’s got my full support on that and he’s been assured he’s got the full support of the ECB on that. And certainly, he’s got the whole team’s support. More than anything, we just want Ben to be okay. He’s got everyone behind him.”I had a conversation with Ben and that’s when I found out. The call will stay between the two of us but for me it was hard to see a friend like that. More than anything, I just want him to be okay. I think throughout this it’s important for people to respect his privacy to give him the best chance to deal with this in his own way.”In the absence of Stokes, balancing the England team is problematic. Had Chris Woakes, who has a bruised heel sustained falling down stairs, been fit he might have mitigated the loss. Moeen Ali was considered as a replacement, too. But, as Root knows, there is “no one that compares” to Stokes.”In my opinion, there’s no one that compares to Ben Stokes in world cricket,” Root continued. “Obviously for a long time now, he’s been incredible. He’s the heartbeat of this team. Balancing the side with Ben not there is one of the things that will take a lot of the thinking.”It seems probable that England will pick two all-rounders – Sam Curran to bat at No. 7 and Ollie Robinson at No. 8 – in an attempt to replicate the depth with bat and ball that Stokes provides. But with the surface also expected to turn, England are also keen to pick their left-arm spinner, Jack Leach. James Anderson and Stuart Broad are expected to complete the attack – though there is understood to have been some talk about rotating them – meaning there is unlikely to be room for Mark Wood. That will leave England’s batting a little light. With Ollie Pope enjoying a long bat in training on Monday, it appears he will be fit to return at No. 5 with Jos Buttler, the keeper, batting at No. 6. The top three is set to be Rory Burns, Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley, meaning there is unlikely to be room for Jonny Bairstow or Dan Lawrence.Ben Stokes and Joe Root share a laugh during a training session•Getty Images

In the longer term, Stokes’ unavailability is sure to refocus attention on the schedule of England’s top players. While their international fixture list has been bursting at the seams for years, the increasing pull of the IPL and the difficulty of travel in the time of Covid has exacerbated the issues. The idea of players pulling out – or being rested from – an Ashes series might have seemed unthinkable not so long ago, but now appears probable. Indeed, if the Australian government does not provide a dispensation allowing players’ families to join them on the tour, it seems there could be several high-profile withdrawals.”As long as I’ve played we’ve always spent long periods away from home and that is a challenge in itself,” Root said. “But certainly it has been heightened by the environment we find ourselves in and it’s just important we keep talking about it.”We’ve said from the outset that we don’t think this is a sustainable way of living and playing and we’ve tried to manage it as best we can. If you find it getting too much you have to talk to people and give yourself the best chance of staying in a good place. It is a challenge at the moment.”What I will say is that having the opportunity to lift that urn is one of the things you dream about from being four or five years old. That does not change. Of course there are challenges, but everyone is desperate to be part of an Ashes series in Australia.”From a players’ point of view, until we know what the lay of the land is, it’s very hard to make any sort of decision. Until then we have to continue conversations with the ECB so they can work with Australia to try to come up with what it’s going to look like when we get there.”

Danni Wyatt's 89* seals T20Is, points victory for England

Century stand between Wyatt and Nat Sciver sets up comfortable chase of 154

Valkerie Baynes14-Jul-2021

Danni Wyatt’s unbeaten 89 led England to an eight-wicket victory over India in the third and final T20I to seal victory for the hosts in their multi-format series.Wyatt reached her score off just 56 deliveries and shared a 112-run partnership with Player of the Series Nat Sciver, who struck an excellent 42 in support, as England overhauled the target of 154 with eight balls to spare at Chelmsford. India reached 153 for 6 on the back of Smriti Mandhana’s classy 70 off 51 balls, but with only two other batters breaking out of single-figures, their total was found short. When Sciver fell in the 17th over, bowled by Sneh Rana, it fell to Wyatt and Heather Knight to guide England home and, after a couple of nervous moments when Knight narrowly evaded the fielder at cover in the 18th, they needed 13 off the last 12 balls. A pressure-easing six by Wyatt over deep square leg off Deepti Sharma was followed immediately by a four swept behind square and, fittingly, Wyatt struck the winning run, a single to midwicket.India’s defeat denied them the chance to draw the series after the sides took two points each from the drawn Test before England claimed both the ODI and T20I legs 2-1 to win 10-6 overall.Wyatt finds sparkOverlooked for the ODI leg of the series, despite having scored three half-centuries in the 50-over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, Wyatt brought up her eighth T20I fifty – and first in 19 innings since December 2019 – with a four through point off Shikha Pandey. The stroke, her eighth boundary of 12 for the innings, also brought up the team hundred and she helped herself to another from the next ball. After scores of 31 and 3 in the previous two T20Is against India, Wyatt was under some pressure to produce an innings of note.Having seen opening partner Tammy Beaumont fall lbw to Sharma for just 11, Wyatt played an intelligent innings of deft placement, excellent timing and authority. In the fifth over, she struck Rana for three fours, clearing the covers either side of a neat glance through third man, to help England to 42 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay. Consecutive fours swept off Poonam Yadav followed and, at the halfway point of the innings, England needed 72 runs. That the powerful and in-form Sciver played the supporting role in their union highlighted Wyatt’s fine touch.Brunt’s breakthrough(s)Having been hauled for five consecutive fours by Shafali Verma in the previous match at Hove on Sunday, which India won in an eight-run thriller, there was a sense of unfinished business for experienced England seamer Katherine Brunt. Just four balls into this match, Brunt ended Verma’s knock, an inside-edge on to her own stumps bringing a second-ball duck. Brunt showed that the wicket meant something too, placing a finger to her lips in a “shushing” motion in her follow-through as Verma trudged off – though she later said it wasn’t aimed at her opponent. After her initial three-over spell, Brunt was re-introduced to the attack in the 17th as England looked to prise out a dangerous-looking Mandhana. Brunt obliged with her second ball back, which Mandhana picked up on the full and sent to Sciver, who took a good low catch at deep midwicket.Mandhana shinesMandhana’s innings was pivotal in raising a competitive total, with Harmanpreet Kaur’s 36 from 26 balls and Richa Ghosh’s excellent cameo of 20 off 13 the only other scores in double-figures for India’s innings.Having seen Verma and Harleen Deol fall cheaply – India were 28 for 2 at the end of the Powerplay – and just as the run rate was looking a little low, Mandhana launched Freya Davies over the long-off boundary for six. Kaur hit back-to-back fours off Sarah Glenn, swept past deep midwicket and drilled through the covers, before she fell lbw to Sciver. Mandhana then brough up her fifty with four off Davies through deep square leg and found the long-leg boundary for four more off a low full toss from Davies two balls later.Rana would have been comfortably run out at the non-striker’s end when she and Mandhana ran a second off Davies, the bowler fumbling Wyatt’s throw in. Mandhana then slog-swept Sophie Ecclestone for six before Ecclestone bowled Rana. Mandhana had one more boundary in her, advancing to Brunt and chipping over mid-off, before she fell.Oh my GhoshGhosh, India’s other prodigiously talented 17-year-old alongside Verma, responded to Mandhana’s dismissal by hitting Brunt’s next two balls for four through mid-on, the first beating a slightly hesitant Ecclestone and met with a scream of “Oh my god!” from Brunt. Ghosh then hit Ecclestone for consecutive fours over short fine leg and backward point before Ecclestone finally beat her with an arm ball that clipped the top of leg stump.

Ireland's Neil Rock tests positive for Covid-19

Ireland wicketkeeper-batter Neil Rock has tested positive for Covid-19. Rock was part of the 15-member T20I squad named for the home series against South Africa, which is set to begin with the ODIs in Dublin on Sunday. Batter Stephen Doheny has been called up as a replacement. The uncapped Rock has been isolated from the squad as he awaits a follow-up test at the team hotel. According to a Cricket Ireland release, one player and one staff member who came in contact with Rock will also be tested.Meanwhile, Doheny will undergo a Covid-19 test as well and will join the squad on Monday if given a negative result.

“Due to our biosecurity measures and contact tracing, we are satisfied that we do not have any genuine close contact cases and this should therefore have minimal impact on the squad,” Mark Rausa, Cricket Ireland’s Head of Sport Science, said. “However, out of an abundance of caution due to the proximity of the series start, we will test one player and one staff member who had confirmed they spent a short amount of time with Neil with correct Covid-safe precautions in place. We expect them to test negative and re-join the squad tomorrow.”This three-match series, which is scheduled to begin on July 19, will be Ireland’s first in T20Is since March 2020, following various cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Rock was among the three uncapped players called up; the others being William McClintock and Ben White.

Chelsea women player ratings vs Real Madrid: Catarina Macario to the rescue! USWNT star saves the day after Hannah Hampton's blunder gave the Blues a Champions League scare

Sonia Bompastor's unbeaten record was in serious danger after a mistake by the Lionesses' goalkeeper, but her half-time substitute changed the game

When Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor brought Catarina Macario on at half-time in the Blues' vital Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday night, even she could not have imagined the American forward would make as big and as sudden of an impact as she did. Entering the game with Las Blancas 1-0 up, within 11 minutes Macario had converted two penalties, one of which she won herself, and turned the match upside down to give Chelsea a win that secured top spot in their UWCL group.

Bompastor's perfect start to life in London came to a frustrating end at the weekend, when the Blues were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Leicester in the Women's Super League, and her unbeaten record was in serious danger in Spain after Hannah Hampton failed to keep out a strike from Caroline Weir which she got a strong hand to. Real had chances to add to their lead before the break too, most notably when Olga Carmona fired just a whisker wide following wonderful work by Weir.

Chelsea's chances in that first half were limited but that all changed when Macario entered the fray. She fired a warning shot within seconds with an offside goal, forced Misa Rodrigez into a great stop one-v-one a few minutes later and then prompted a clumsy tackle in the box out of Olga, before dusting herself off to confidently convert from the spot. Within five minutes, Olga was left remonstrating once more, this time penalised for a handball in the area. Macario remained cool while waiting to try and beat Misa from 12 yards again though and when the referee finally blew her whistle, she hit the exact same spot to secure a 2-1 win that means Chelsea will face a group stage runner-up in the quarter-finals.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Hannah Hampton (3/10):

Made a real mess of Weir's strike when she should've kept it out. Distribution wasn't great, either.

Lucy Bronze (4/10):

Struggled to contain the double threat of Caicedo and Olga, and later Athenea, losing a crucial duel to the Olga in the build-up to Real's goal.

Nathalie Bjorn (5/10):

Her and Bright were exposed far too often at the back by a lively attack.

Millie Bright (5/10):

As well as being caught on the back foot regularly, she gave the ball away in dangerous positions a few too many times.

Niamh Charles (7/10):

Kept Real relatively quiet down her side and was lively in attack, making the interception in the final third which led to Chelsea's second goal.

Erin Cuthbert (7/10):

Delivered good set pieces that created some chances for her players and then started to make her mark in open play in the second half, putting Macario through on goal brilliantly for a big opportunity.

Wieke Kaptein (7/10):

Battled away nicely in midfield and won possession more often than any other player. That pressure almost gave her a great chance in the first half, but a defender just nipped in to steal it away at the vital moment.

Sjoeke Nusken (6/10):

Worked hard and was reliable on the ball in the areas she needed to be, though her end product in the final third was lacking.

Getty ImagesAttack

Aggie Beever-Jones (5/10):

Worked very hard and had a couple of nice moments, but things often just didn't come off for her.

Mayra Ramirez (5/10):

Drove the attack forward consistently and was Chelsea's biggest attacking threat with her running power, though that didn't amount to many chances. Off at the break.

Guro Reiten (5/10):

Had Chelsea's most meaningful effort of the first half but also let Weir run right past her for the opening goal, then limped off injured before half-time.

Maika Hamano (6/10):

On just before half time due to injury to Reiten and brought some positivity to the attack, while also honouring her defensive duties.

Catarina Macario (9/10):

Replaced Ramirez at the break and made an immediate impact. Scoring two penalties within 11 minutes, one of which she won. Could've had a hat-trick too, if Misa hadn't denied her with a great save one-on-one.

Ashley Lawrence (6/10):

Came on for the final 20 minutes to help Chelsea see the game out and made a couple of timely defensive interventions as part of that effort.

Sandy Baltimore (5/10):

Like Lawrence, her task was to ensure her team held on to this win and she did that job well, despite picking up a frustrating yellow card.

Sonia Bompastor (8/10):

Injuries limited her selection choice for this game, and indeed forced her to make a change during, but she put out her best team possible to get a vital result and was proactive with her subs. Felt bold to take off Ramirez and yet, it was a move that proved game-changing, with Macario turning the evening around.
