Bruce Oxenford may not leap to mind as the first choice to play Captain America in any upcoming Marvel films. But the Australian umpire could have been mistaken for an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, when he marched onto the field carrying one on his left arm to officiate the second Royal London ODI between England and Sri Lanka at Edgbaston. While Oxenford had worn the lollipop-shaped guard in April during the IPL match between Gujarat Lions and Royal Challengers Bangalore, and earlier at a World T20 warm-up match between Australia and the West Indies, this is the first time the protective device has appeared in an international match and represents another step towards greater protection for officials. The issue of umpire safety was thrust into the limelight in 2014 when an official died after being struck in the head by a ball during a league match in Israel.Earlier this year Australian John Ward became the first umpire to wear a helmet in an international match during the fourth ODI between Australia and India at Manuka Oval. The shield worn by Oxenford is made from polycarbonate, weighs one kilogram and is six millimetres thick. The version used at Edgbaston is the second incarnation of the device and it was tested in the nets before being cleared for use during the match. An ECB spokesman confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that, if a batsman struck the ball and it deflected off the shield and was subsequently caught, the batsman would be given out, in contrast to the situation for fielders wearing protective headgear. If the ball strikes the helmet before looping to a fielder, dead ball is called.
In a season that has had more ups and downs than a Thorpe Park rollercoaster, Manchester United were dealt yet another reality check away to Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday evening, having slipped to a shock, 3-0 defeat against the La Liga strugglers to crash out of the competition.
After the lows of defeats against the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Brentford so far this term, Erik ten Hag's men perhaps reached a new nadir in Andalusia yesterday, having simply "wilted" against a side who are currently 13th in Spain's top-flight, as per The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell.
It was, undoubtedly, a grim showing from the Red Devils from start to finish on the night, with long-serving stopper David De Gea having undoubtedly been the worst of the bunch, after making three "dreadful" errors, as per The Mirror's Colin Mirror, for all three goals.
The 32-year-old notably gave possession to captain Harry Maguire in the build-up to the first goal despite the Englishman being surrounded by three white shirts, before being far too easily beaten by a looping, guided effort from Loic Bade just after the break.
The Spaniard's night of misery reached its peak late on as he inexplicably gifted the ball straight to the feet of opposition striker Youssef En-Nesyri, with the Moroccan international duly slotting home from range for his second of the night.
As the aforementioned Whitwell noted, that performance from the former Atletico Madrid man has sparked "long-term questions" over his future at the club, with it yet to be seen if the experienced stopper will be handed an extension on his expiring deal.
It would be wrong, however, to suggest that De Gea was the only villain last night, with midfield maestro Christian Eriksen having also been well below-par at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
How did Eriksen perform against Sevilla?
It was only a matter of days ago that the returning Dane was being lauded for his performance in the weekend win over Nottingham Forest, with the 31-year-old – who had replaced the injured Marcel Sabitzer just moments before kick-off – having been "masterful" at the City Ground, according to Manchester Evening News journalist, Samuel Luckhurst.
After the highs of that performance, the former Tottenham Hotspur man – who has only recently returned from a lengthy injury layoff – was brought crashing back down to earth in Seville, forming part of a midfield trio that was simply "schooled" by the likes of Ivan Rakitic and Fernando, according to MEN's Tyrone Marshall.
As the Independent's Jamie Braidwood wrote, Eriksen simply 'didn't look ready' to compete against the six-time Europa League winners, having been 'guiilty of careless lapses when United needed him to be a calming influence', as per Luckhurst.
Man United boss Christian Eriksen
Those woes were laid bare by the fact that while the £150k-per-week dud did register three key passes from his deep-lying berth, he also lost possession on 23 occasions from his 79 touches, having proved a rare liability on the ball.
The 120-cap playmaker seemingly 'could not handle Sevilla's intensity' – according to GOAL's Richard Martin – having won just four of his nine total duels on the day, while also being dribbled past on two occasions as a marker of his shortcomings defensively.
The hope will be that such an outing was a mere blip for both the summer arrival and Ten Hag's men as a whole, with the top-four hopefuls having little time to lick their wounds ahead of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final showdown with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Tottenham Hotspur are far from the only club in the Premier League to have struggled this season, and should they dismiss Antonio Conte he would be the 11th manager to leave their post since the start of the new campaign.
Fierce rivals Chelsea are one of the most high-profile examples, as their new ownership sought to stamp their authority on the club by replacing Thomas Tuchel with a long-term boss in Graham Potter.
This shake-up has seen the Blues endure plenty of tough times, but a process is now in place after snatching the young highly-rated coach from Brighton and Hove Albion.
Surprisingly, one team this move did not affect was the Seagulls themselves, who simply found his replacement with ease and welcomed Roberto De Zerbi in his place.
The Italian has merely continued the good work that was already being done at the club with little fuss, arguably even elevating them to another level as they currently sit seven points from fourth spot with three games in hand.
Perhaps sporting director Fabio Paratici could take a leaf out of Chelsea's book and steal another manager from the south coast, given how the 43-year-old has performed. That is at least what is being suggested by The Athletic, that a move could very well be on the cards.
What is Roberto De Zerbi's play style?
Although unlikely that Brighton would sanction the exit of two managers in one season, it stands as an immaculate testament to their continued good work, that their players and staff alike all draw such widespread interest.
A clear free-thinker, De Zerbi moved to the Amex Stadium following a spell at Shakhtar Donetsk that was cut short due to the Russian invasion.
Wherever he has gone the 5 foot 9 Italian has stuck by a very specific set of principles that suggest he very well could surpass the legacy left at the club by Mauricio Pochettino.
The Argentine's reign will be remembered for their beautiful football that could just not quite get them across the line, but in this potential Conte successor, they would gain that killer instinct outlined in his philosophy.
He demands that everyone in his team be comfortable with the ball at their feet, seeking to invite pressure so that his side can cut through them with immense technique. However, the emphasis remains on possession, as his side often seeks to strangle their opposition by dominating them with the ball and then smothering them without it.
Upon joining the Premier League, a list of high-profile fans sang his praises including Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp. But it was his former teammate Christian Bucchi who reserved the greatest praise, stating: "De Zerbi is kind of a football genius in Italy. He was a bit of a rebel as a footballer."
He would then very describe his philosophy as "Guardiola-esque in terms of having the ball, getting to the opposition half through combination play."
Whilst Pochettino still remains a well-liked figure around north London, De Zerbi clearly boasts the potential to take them to another level should he be willing to take on that challenge.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte will likely be chomping at the bit to back in the dugout amid his recent layoff, with the serial-winning Italian having watched from afar as his side wilted on the road for the second game running in all competitions.
After suffering a shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Sheffield United in midweek, the Lilywhites – under the stewardship of Cristian Stellini – again came undone away against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon, with Adama Traore’s late strike sealing the win for the battling hosts at Molineux.
Having clinched two successive Premier League wins against both West Ham United and Chelsea heading into today’s encounter, the north Londoners were dealt a dose of reality after suffering a further setback in their top-four bid, with only Newcastle United’s earlier loss to Manchester City likely to have softened the blow.
Amid a frustrating day for the visitors, one standout figure was arguably that of January arrival, Pedro Porro, with the dynamic wing-back having come close to breaking the deadlock with a stunning free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
The 23-year-old had seemingly deserved to get on the scoresheet having been a real threat down the right flank, with the relentless Spaniard having laid on two key passes in his 81-minute outing, as well as enjoying a solid 81% pass accuracy rate.
The on-loan asset was not alone in having impressed in the Midlands, however, with influential defender Cristian Romero having also been something of a shining light on the day.
How did Romero play against Wolves?
The World Cup-winning Argentine – who has previously been lauded as “street-wise” by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher – went into the match off the back of his rock-solid display against the Blues last week, having been “utterly impeccable” in that 2-0 triumph in the words of The Athletic’s Tim Spiers.
The 24-year-old was able to follow up that dominant performance with another dogged display this time around, despite ending up on the losing side, with the aggressive centre-back having won five duels in total, as well as making three clearances.
That destructive quality – which saw the centre-back commit two fouls – was also mirrored by Romero’s brilliance in possession as he achieved a standout 93% pass accuracy rate from his 80 touches, losing possession on just seven occasions.
As the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick noted, the former Atalanta man had initially been in ‘total control’ for the first hour or so prior to Wolves’ late onslaught, with the 6 foot 1 ace undoubtedly not to blame for the home side being able to eventually make the breakthrough in the closing stages.
As 90min’s Sean Walsh also noted, the at-times erratic brute was ‘Tottenham’s most alert defender and easily their most reliable distributor from the back’, having seemingly done all he could to try and keep Stellini’s men in the game.
With the battle for Champions League qualification likely to hot up in the coming weeks and months, there are few players better suited to such a fight than that of Romero.
Insider ExWHUemployee has revealed that West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has now “resumed training” after his recent injury and may return at the start of next month.
What’s the latest on Alphonse Areola and his West Ham injury?
The Frenchman has been out recently with a hamstring injury and consequently hasn’t been able to feature in the club’s last two Premier League games.
As result, in the recent draw against Newcastle United, manager David Moyes opted to name third-choice goalkeeper Joseph Anang and academy stopper Krisztian Hegyi both on the bench at St James’ Park – he did the same against Chelsea last weekend, too.
However, following a new update on Areola on The West Ham Way podcast, it seems as though the goalkeeper may be back on the bench shortly to provide more senior depth to Lukasz Fabianski.
Indeed, Ex revealed that the 29-year-old is close to returning although likely won’t play until they face Manchester United in the FA Cup.
He said: “Areola has also resumed training. He’s unlikely to feature for us until the Manchester United game, but obviously, it will be good for him to get back on the bench and get some training in before that game.”
What does the Areola injury mean for WHUFC?For now at West Ham, Fabianski remains very much the number one goalkeeping option for Moyes, with the Pole starting all 22 league games so far this season. He is, however, 37 years old now and with Areola completing a permanent transfer to the club from Paris Saint-Germain last summer (signing a five-year deal), it suggests the Frenchman will be the first pick in years to come. This term, though, the 29-year-old has mainly had to settle for minutes in the cup competitions. For instance, he has started every Europa Conference League game.Taking that into account, even if he is fit enough to play, he probably won’t come into the side for another few weeks until West Ham take on Man United in the fifth round of the FA Cup on 1st March.
Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing up a possible summer move for soon-to-be free agent Marcus Thuram.
The Lowdown: Goal-shy Magpies
Despite managing to keep an impressive four clean sheets in their last five Premier League games, Newcastle have only managed to score twice in those matches.
That defence has not been an issue at all, having conceded the fewest goals in the league with 12, but their shyness in front of goal means that the likes of Tottenham Hotspur are slowly creeping up to them in the race to finish in a UEFA Champions League spot.
Thus, the St. James’ Park outfit may look for a new poacher in the summer, in order to help take them to the next level.
The Latest: Thuram interest
According to Spanish news publication Sport, the Tynesiders are just one of a number of clubs interested in signing Thuram this summer.
The long queue includes Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and FC Barcelona.
He is out of contract at Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer, meaning that he can leave as a free agent at the end of the season.
Thuram would further elevate the quality of the North East club’s frontline following the signing of winger Anthony Gordon from Everton in the January transfer window.
Hailed as ‘world class’ on his day by Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer, and an ‘absolute beast’ by football talent scout Jacek Kulig after an impressive performance against Real Madrid in 2020, the six-foot-four striker has scored a total of 41 goals and made a further 26 assists in 122 games for Gladbach, with 17 goal contributions coming so far this season (Transfermarkt).
With plenty of European pedigree as well, Thuram would be an ideal signing for the Toon as they aim to fight on four fronts next season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joe Hodge could’ve headed out the Molineux exit door before the transfer deadline – but Julen Lopetegui opted to keep him, according to reporter Liam Keen.
The Lowdown: Hodge’s season
The 20-year-old has experienced his first season in the senior plans at Wolves, with him playing 10 times so far this campaign.
He made his Premier League debut back in October but has only managed to come off the bench once in the previous seven league outings, starting Lopetegui’s first league game in charge against Everton.
He’s since started both FA Cup clashes against Liverpool, making himself a useful option in the middle of the park at Molineux.
The Latest: Keen’s comments
It seems as though he will now be able to continue his development in and around the senior side, with Keen revealing on the Express & Star YouTube channel that Lopetegui opted against letting the Irishman leave this month, saying:
“Joe Hodge was potentially going to go out [on loan] – small bit of news on that is Julen Lopetegui made the decision himself that he wants to keep him, which is a big call because Wolves are going to have seven central midfielders.
“So you’d have thought maybe they’d have liked to see him go and get game time, but the manager likes him, it’s a big decision to keep him, and hopefully he gets opportunities.”
The Verdict: Part of the plans
Lopetegui made his belief in Hodge crystal clear when the 20-year-old penned a new long-term deal at Wolves earlier this month (via Wolves).
But with Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Matheus Nunes being the Spaniard’s preferred midfield three, with the Portuguese gems all playing the most amount of minutes amongst centre-midfielders at Wolves (via WhoScored), Hodge may have been tempted by a temporary departure.
He was an unused substitute against West Ham United in his latest league matchday appearance alongside new signing Mario Lemina.
Wolves boast incredible experience between the four central midfielders at their disposal, potentially giving the youngster – dubbed a “very exciting talent” by reporter Mark McCadden – the ideal place to learn and develop.
Newcastle United defender Dan Burn was playing a dangerous game on Sunday with his defending potentially risking a penalty being awarded against him.
What’s the latest?
Eddie Howe’s side battled until the very end on Sunday afternoon on Tyneside to prevail with all three points against Marco Silva’s Fulham.
Having seen Aleksandar Mitrovic’s penalty disallowed, Alexander Isak was able to pop up with a late header to seal the points for the Magpies.
However, the defending in the lead-up to the penalty award from Burn has been heavily criticised as dangerous having put his hands on Andreas Pereira.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, pundit Stephen Warnock has slammed the Blyth-born left-back and believes he is walking on thin ice when he is defending like that:
“I thought it was a penalty. I thought the arm on the shoulder is so, so dangerous. When you’re running as well and you get that arm on the shoulder. The slightest pull when you’re running at speed can cause so many problems. I thought that was a penalty and a sending-off.”
Another let-off?
It is crucial to mention that this incident was looked at by VAR and the decision came back as no penalty just moments before the penalty was awarded for the incident involving Kieran Trippier.
And there is certainly minimal contact made which is probably not enough to see Pereira fall to the floor from the slightest of pulls.
However, we do have to agree with Warnock in the sense Burn is playing a very dangerous game by giving the referee and VAR even the opportunity to consider giving it as a penalty.
The 30-year-old was beaten to the ball by the Fulham midfielder who was then bearing down on goal before Burn placed his hands on him.
And the challenge did almost have a sense of last-ditch desperation about it to prevent Pereira from being able to get a shot away on Nick Pope’s goal.
Again, we do not think there was enough of a pull on the Fulham man to bring him down.
But from a Fulham perspective, you could well argue that what Burn did shouldn’t be tolerated with Pereira being pulled – albeit minimally – inside the box.
And this is not the first time Burn has been at the centre of VAR controversy this year with the defender accused of pulling on Arsenal’s Gabriel inside the box earlier this month.
So with this in mind, it is perhaps wise for the Newcastle defender to perhaps cut this out of his game as it does feel as if it could potentially catch up with him soon.
