Man Utd hit the jackpot with free signing now worth the same as Bruno

Bruno Fernandes. A true leader who knows exactly what it means and takes to wear the Manchester United shirt.

On his Man of the Match debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, it was obvious that the 29-year-old was destined to lead the side out the Old Trafford tunnel, and since then, he’s gone from strength to strength.

In truth, there simply aren’t enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe how priceless the Portuguese magnifico is to the Red Devils, with his 144 goal contributions in 231 matches speaking for itself.

From the fans' perspective, the captain is without doubt the Red Devils' most valuable player, but CIES Football Observatory says otherwise, with one player in particular now worth the same as Fernandes.

Scott McTominay’s United career

Since making his debut against Arsenal back in 2017, Scott McTominay has developed into a reliable first-team player for Man Utd.

Although amongst the fanbase he resembles a Marmite player, it’s no coincidence that every manager has utilised the Scot, being a favourite of Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and now Erik ten Hag.

The midfielder has racked up an impressive 250 appearances for his boyhood club, becoming known for being a "monster,” as dubbed by the Norweigan boss, standing at 6 foot 4.

As he reaches the peak of his career, McTominay has developed into a clutch player for the Red Devils, and this upturn in influence has seen his market value skyrocket.

Scott McTominay’s value in 2024

This season, McTominay has been enjoying his most successful campaign so far on a personal level, despite only starting 17 Premier League matches.

Operating mainly as a box-crashing number eight, the number 39 has found a new lease of life in his new role, which enables much more positional freedom.

The Scotland international has shown up multiple times when it matters most, notably scoring crucial goals against Brentford and Aston Villa to turn two points into six.

With one game left in the league season, the midfielder has netted seven goals, which makes him United’s joint-third-highest scorer. It’s also his best return of his career thus far, surpassing his four-goal 2020/21 campaign.

His upturn in performance has clearly had an impact on his value, as he’s now among the most valuable players in the entire United squad.

McTominay’s worth stands at an impressive £51m, which remarkably is the same as Fernandes’, who is the Red Devil with the most goals and assists this season.

One reason why the academy graduate is worth so much is simply due to the fact that he’s a goalscoring midfielder, a rather rare-to-come-by profile in the market.

Furthermore, he’s showcased his leadership qualities when called upon, wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of the Portuguese number eight, which is another desirable trait.

Overall, it’s quite clear that United truly hit the jackpot on McTominay, who cost the club £0, and if he continues to perform, his worth is only going to head in one direction.

Man City are monitoring Marc Guehi's situation and could sign Crystal Palace star for free after England star's failed Newcastle switch

Newcastle United missed out on the signing of Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi this summer, and could now face competition from Manchester City.

  • Guehi under Palace contract till 2026
  • Defender not looking to extend contract
  • Man City may try to sign for free
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Guehi had been heavily linked with an exit from Crystal Palace this summer as Newcastle United held an intense interest in the 24-year-old centre-back. The Magpies submitted four official bids for the defender but the Eagles remained adamant on their asking price, and rejected all four before Newcastle accepted defeat.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guehi's current contract with Crystal Palace will come to an end in the summer of 2026, and as such, the Eagles are looking to offer the 24-year-old a new contract that would also see a major bump in wages. However, the Daily Mail has suggested that Guehi is not keen on extending his contract and could look to leave the club for free in 2026. As such, Manchester City are now keeping an eye on the centre-back's situation and could look to sign him on a free deal.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Due to Guehi's apparent disinterest towards signing a contract extension at Selhurst Park, the report has suggested that Crystal Palace now have two options in front of them: try to convince the 24-year-old to sign an extension, or sell him in the next two transfer windows at a cut-price.

Newcastle star now looks undroppable after 10/10 Burnley display

Newcastle United made it back-to-back wins in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, beating relegation-threatened Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor.

Goals from Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff secured the win for Eddie Howe's side, keeping the Magpies' slim hopes for European football next season alive.

The Magpies have now only lost one of their last seven league outings, with Howe working wonders despite the club's ongoing injury crisis.

The win against Vincent Kompany's side has seen the Magpies move to within four points of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, with the club in a great position to claim a second successive season of European football.

One Newcastle player produced an excellent display in the victory and is deserving of a regular starting role in Howe's side for the foreseeable future.

Jacob Murphy's stats against Burnley

After switching to a 4-4-2 at Turf Moor, boss Howe decided to utilise Jacob Murphy in a more natural right-midfield role, a decision that proved to be an excellent one for the Magpies.

The winger featured for 69 minutes during the meeting but managed to provide two assists for Longstaff and Isak's strikes in the victory.

Murphy also managed to complete 21 passes at a completion rate of 75%, with six of the completed attempts registered as key passes – the most of any Newcastle player.

His impressive display also included a solid defensive performance, winning two tackles and making one interception as he doubled up with Tino Livramento down the Magpies' right-hand side.

However, his display wasn't all positive, giving possession away 16 times in 69 minutes, an average of once every four minutes, although that seemingly indicated his desire to make things happen for his side.

For his efforts, the 29-year-old received a 10/10 match rating from Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder, with the writer claiming Murphy was 'always a threat' throughout the encounter.

Jacob Murphy looks undroppable after Burnley display

In recent weeks, the club's current injury problems have seen Murphy be deployed in multiple different positions, including right-back, as demonstrated against Tottenham.

Whilst he did an admirable job of filling in an unnatural position, it was clear that position didn't get the best out of the 29-year-old, with his ability to pick a pass into the final third redundant at the back.

However, the decision to switch to a four-man midfield benefitted the former Norwich City man this afternoon, with the forward allowed to create more frequent opportunities and less reliant on having to focus on the defensive side of his game.

With just three games remaining in the 2023/24 season, Murphy has another handful of opportunities to showcase his talents to Magpies boss Howe and prove he still has the ability to be a key part of his squad.

However, his performance today has certainly made him undroppable ahead of the games against Brighton, Manchester United and Brentford, with Murphy deserving of another opportunity next weekend to build on his impressive 10/10 display.

Kamran Akmal's 55-ball 101 powers Peshawar Zalmi's big win

A vintage Kamran Akmal century made light work of a modest target of 149 set by Quetta Gladiators.

The Report by Peter Della Penna22-Feb-2020
A vintage Kamran Akmal century made light work of a modest target set by Quetta Gladiators, chasing down 149 with nine balls to spare. Jason Roy paced the Gladiators’ innings with a 40-ball half-century, but struggled to get into third gear in the waning overs in the face of some excellent death bowling led by Wahab Riaz.Roy’s half-century looked pedestrian by the time Kamran got going in the Zalmi Powerplay. Whereas Roy finally reached his fifty in the 15th over with a two off Darren Sammy, Kamran needed just 20 balls, reaching the milestone two deliveries into the fifth over of the Powerplay when he drove Mohammad Hasnain through mid-on for his eighth four. That matched the number of dot balls he had faced while he’d also driven two sixes over wide long-off and swept another over square leg.By the end of the Powerplay, the required rate was already under a run a ball. Kamran adjusted in kind, waltzing his way to three figures off a subsequent 34 deliveries as he brought up the landmark top-edging a sweep to deep fine leg. He fell next ball middling another sweep to Roy at deep midwicket in the 17th over to gift Fawad Ahmed his second wicket in the space of three balls, but by that stage the target was down to single digits. The scorecard might show that Zalmi only reached the target halfway through the 19th over, but that flattered Gladiators’ limp effort in the field in what was a very one-sided contest.Kamran Akmal whacked 13 fours and four sixes during his 55-ball 101•Pakistan Super LeagueTurning pointJonty Rhodes remarked on TV commentary that Tom Banton played the best shot of the opening over of the chase, taking a single first ball to get off strike so that Kamran could run wild on Mohammad Nawaz. Kamran charged the left-arm spinner immediately to clear him over mid-off for six, then followed with a sweep over the man at deep square leg. After a dot, he drove him again over mid-off for a one-bounce four before ending the first over pulling a half-tracker over midwicket. Gladiators were left shellshocked and never recovered.Star of the dayIt was Kamran’s day virtually from the moment he walked out. He slowed down after crossing fifty mainly because he could afford to. His confidence and aggression sucked the life out of the Gladiators, who were always going to struggle to defend when taking into consideration that a target of 203 on the same ground a day earlier went down to the penultimate ball. He ended with 13 fours and four sixes, having done the bulk of the dirty work in the first six overs. The big missNawaz had a chance to exact revenge on Kamran after being victimised in that 21-run first over. After Kamran had pulled Sohail Khan over square leg midway through the second over for another four, the batsman punched Sohail to extra cover off his next ball, where Nawaz made a brilliant diving stop as Kamran took off impetuously for a single. Banton stayed at the non-striker’s end with Kamran stuck halfway down the pitch on 24.But Nawaz rushed a throw from his knees rather than take an extra moment to gather himself. The throw to the striker’s end bounced over the stumps with Kamran six yards short. Nawaz also had another chance to make amends in the 14th when Kamran cut Sohail to him at backward point on 94, but he spilled a knee-height chance.Where the teams standGladiators stay on two points after having won their opener while Zalmi bounced back after being on the wrong end of their first match of the season. Both teams are behind Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings on net run rate despite equal points.

Nottingham Forest’s 8.5/10 ace must start every game after Fulham heroics

Nottingham Forest returned to winning ways last night after a convincing 3-1 victory over Marco Silva's Fulham side at the City Ground.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White all managed to get on the scoresheet, with the Reds picking up three vital points that saw them move three points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone.

A brilliant header from Tosin Adarabioyo gave the visitors hope for a second comeback in four days, but the Reds held on to secure a much-needed win.

Nottingham Forest player Callum Hudson-Odoi

Nuno Espírito Santo's side were without a win since the 17th of February after a 2-0 win against David Moyes' West Ham United, but the dominant performance last night has given fans reason to be positive about potential survival.

One player produced a sensational performance, with the talent needing to feature week in and week out before the end of the campaign.

Danilo's stats against Fulham

After being dropped following the 1-0 defeat away at Brighton and Hove Albion a couple of weeks ago, Brazilian midfielder Danilo was given an opportunity to feature from the start against Fulham last night, with the 22-year-old taking his chance with both hands.

The former Palmeiras man played in a box-to-box role alongside academy graduate Ryan Yates, with Danilo excelling at both ends of the pitch throughout the encounter.

During his 90 minutes, the youngster managed 44 touches, which included 19 successful passes – one of which was a beautifully weighted ball into the path of Gibbs-White, who slotted the ball home for the Reds' third goal.

Despite his brilliant display in possession, the Brazilian was just as impressive defensively, winning 100% of his tackles, making one block and five interceptions, as he played a huge part in maintaining Forest's lead in the second half.

Danilo also won 50% of his ground duels that he contested, with the Reds' number 22 making three clearances – a tally only beaten by Murillo, Andrew Omobamidele and Neco Williams.

The midfielder was given a rating of 8.5/10 by Nottingham Post Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson, with the journalist claiming the Brazilian "covered a lot of ground throughout".

Why Danilo is now undroppable

Given his display against Fulham last night, the 22-year-old – who was "everywhere", according to journalist Callum Castel – has surely staked his claim for a regular starting role under Nuno between now and the end of the season.

His ability to quickly transition defence into attack is a huge asset for the club, especially given the counter-attacking playstyle implemented since promotion back to the Premier League in 2022.

Gibbs-White and fellow Brazilian Murillo are undoubtedly two of the first names on the teamsheet given their impressive campaigns in Forest's disappointing season, the latter attracting interest from sides such as Arsenal and Chelsea who are now keen on the defender, an indication as to how impressive he's been since arriving in English football.

Danilo has started in each one of Nuno's four Premier League wins as Forest boss, with the midfielder evidently a key asset to the head coach and deserving of a consistent starting spot over the coming weeks.

Newcastle may have sold another Lewis Miley for just £1.5m

In the past few years, English clubs – including Newcastle United – have begun to produce a high-level crop of midfield players. Birmingham City can take credit for the development of perhaps the world’s best player at the moment, Jude Bellingham. The 20-year-old now plays for Real Madrid, having played for Borussia Dortmund in between.

Declan Rice, now an Arsenal player, was brought through by West Ham United, after originally being in Chelsea’s academy, and the likes of Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount were successful products of the same famous Cobham academy, with the former an integral player at the Blues and the latter now at Manchester United.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice

More recently, Kobbie Mainoo is the young midfielder breaking through and becoming one of the top talents in the world. It has been a rapid rise for 18-year-old Mainoo, who made his full debut for England’s senior side just five months after his first Premier League start for Manchester United.

Newcastle youngster Lewis Miley is another exciting up-and-coming midfielder and has already played 17 games in the Premier League before his 18th birthday. Aside from Miley, Newcastle have some talented youngsters coming through in midfield, including 21-year-old Joe White, who returned to St James’ Park in January after his loan spell at Crewe Alexandra ended.

However, the Magpies may have let another young talent in midfield slip through the cracks, and depart the club for a major Premier League rival, where he is now making waves and contributing to first-team success.

Newcastle let a talented teen leave for peanuts

It was August 2021 when exciting talent Bobby Clark left Newcastle to join Premier League rivals Liverpool. According to Lee Ryder of The Chronicle Live, the transfer was swiftly completed by the Reds, who convinced Clark to move to Anfield rather than sign a scholarship with the Magpies.

It will surely disappoint Newcastle fans, who would no doubt have wanted Clark to follow in his father’s footsteps and pull on the famous black and white stripes at St James’ Park. The youngster's father is Toon legend Lee Clark, who made 260 appearances for the club across two spells in both the 1990s and early 2000s.

Liverpool's Bobby Clark.

The fee Liverpool paid for Clark is rumoured to be in the region of £1.5m, and whilst it may seem a lot on a young player, there is no denying his talent. After all, the aforementioned Ryder said he reminded the reporter of a "young Paul Gascoigne."

Sadly for those in the north east, according to Clark’s father, he decided to join the Merseyside club due to the amount of knowledge they already had about him as a footballer, and “because one day they believed he could be a first-team player for Liverpool”.

How Clark and Miley compare

It is fair to say that the opportunities Miley has had this season may have also befallen Clark had the Liverpool man decided to stay at St James’ Park all of those years ago.

Bobby Clark for Liverpool

Miley’s 17 games in the Premier League this term originally came due to an injury crisis, but have now been fully deserved. As Matthew Robson said on Newcastle Fan website The Mag, “No matter who he has been up against, Lewis Miley hasn’t looked out of place”.

Clark’s job is harder. He has to break into a settled Liverpool midfield with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai all ahead of him. However, he has played 14 times for Liverpool so far and scored his first goal against Sparta Prague in the Europa League this season, as well as registering two assists, one in the Europa League and one in the FA Cup.

As a footballer, Miley and Clark are not too dissimilar. They are busy midfielders, of a similar profile, excelling in the final third although are both more than capable of playing in all phases, and are not afraid of getting on the ball and looking to impact the game.

Miley averages 50 touches per 90 minutes this season, as per Fbref, and in comparison, Clark averages 47 touches per 90 minutes in the Europa League, according to Sofascore. This shows impressive maturity and bravery in their game, which is rare in midfielders so young.

The pair look after the ball well when in possession, with Miley averaging a pass accuracy of 84% in the top-flight according to Sofascore, and Clark just slightly worse at 78%, although with a much smaller sample size. They enjoy getting on the ball in deeper areas, pulling the strings and kickstarting attacks, before crashing the box looking to get on the end of crosses.

Lewis Miley for Newcastle United against Paris Saint-Germain.

It will certainly frustrate Newcastle that they failed to keep hold of 19-year-old Clark, who is now beginning to break into Liverpool’s first team and show similar levels of talent to Miley. If things had turned out differently, he could’ve helped Newcastle through their injury crisis this season, rather than becoming a breakout star at Anfield.

Australia women's team prize money to equal men's at T20 World Cup

Cricket Australia will boost the team’s winnings for next year’s tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Oct-2019Cricket Australia will top up the team’s prize money at the women’s T20 World Cup to match the men’s for whichever stage of the tournament they reach next year. That announcement follows the ICC’s decision to substantially increase the prize money on offer for women’s events. If Australia successfully defend their title on home soil in February and March it would see CA putting up US$600,000 (AUD$885,000) alongside the ICC prize pool.”We want to continue our commitment to equality by ensuring that any prize money earned by the Australian Women’s team in the T20 World Cup is the same as what is on offer in the men’s side of the tournament. Paranaense: Coritiba goleia Paraná e encosta no líder
