Clarke deepens Lancs anxiety

Scorecard
Rikki Clarke scored 140 to put Warwickshire in command•Getty Images

Rikki Clarke often responds to questions about his “unfulfilled talent” with a roll of the eyes and the deadest of verbal bats. All the same, when the Warwickshire all-rounder bats as fluently as he did in making 140 against Lancashire on the third day at Liverpool, it is inevitable that good judges will speculate about what he might have achieved with a little more consistency and, perhaps, a little more application.Clarke’s innings could not have been better timed, and neither could many of his shots. He joined Darren Maddy seven overs into the day’s play with his side on 81 for seven, still needing 19 runs to avoid being asked to follow-on. Smoothly shrugging off the prospect of such an indignity by lifting Simon Kerrigan for the first of his three sixes, Clarke then proceeded to change the character and tempo of the contest. The former Surrey and Derbyshire batsman shared an eighth-wicket partnership of 224 runs with the admirable Maddy, whose 112 was his first championship century for nearly four years. Their stand fell just four runs of the county’s all-time eighth-wicket record set by Bob Wyatt and Alf Croom against Worcestershire in 1925. More significantly, it meant that instead of conceding a substantial first-innings deficit, Warwickshire were able to take a 79-run lead into the second half of this fluctuating game.By the close of play Lancashire were only 35 runs behind but they had lost four choice wickets, three of them to the new ball. Stephen Moore, who has yet to pass 20 in eight first-class innings this year; Paul Horton, who gloved a lifting delivery to Tim Ambrose; and Karl Brown were all claimed by the impressive left-arm seamer Keith Barker. Then, immediately after being dropped by Clarke off Barker, Steven Croft very unwisely slog-swept Jeetan Patel to Neil Carter at deep square leg to complete Lancashire’s miserable day. Warwickshire will go into the fourth morning with buoyant expectations that they can clinch a remarkable victory.Indeed, the only good news for Lancashire supporters on Saturday arrived around teatime when Old Trafford officials confirmed that Junaid Khan has been given permission to play for them in both t20 and championship games this season. The Pakistani fast bowler is expected to arrive at Old Trafford in June.By then we will have a better idea of whether Lancashire are in anything like decent shape to defend their title. The evidence of the first two games is not especially encouraging for them.Yet it is key to an understanding of the Maddy-Clarke partnership that Lancashire did not bowl poorly on the third afternoon and nor did the Liverpool pitch wicket flatten out. The ball continued to pass the bat but the Warwickshire pair responded to any small defeats with phlegmatic temperaments and sound, albeit contrasting, techniques. At first Clarke was intent on taking the initiative away from a Lancashire attack which had been buoyed by Kerrigan claiming the wickets of Chris Wright and Tim Ambrose in the first seven overs of the day. On the ground where he took a record-equalling seven catches in an innings last August, Clarke took the attack to Lancashire with a display of controlled hitting which never veered into mere slogging. He chose the balls to hit wisely and he timed his strokes pleasingly well. After reaching his half century off 49 balls, he took a more sedate 89 deliveries to reach three figures. At the other end, Maddy ground his way to an equally vital century off 176 balls, an effort that was all the more praiseworthy given that he had been hit on the hand by Chapple early in the first session. It all made for good watching for the Warwickshire supporters, some of whom had draped a St George’s flag across one of the stands at Aigburth. In one corner of the patriotic symbol was a bear and ragged staff; but across the middle were written the words ‘One Rikki Clarke.’ By Saturday evening, everyone could see what the fuss was about.

South Africa T20s may not be televised, says ZC

South Africa’s five T20s against Zimbabwe in Harare in June may not be televised as Zimbabwe Cricket is unlikely to be able to afford the costs involved

Firdose Moonda17-Apr-2012South Africa’s five T20s against Zimbabwe in Harare in June may not be televised as Zimbabwe Cricket is unlikely to be able to afford the costs involved. The matches will be played between June 20 and 24, in accordance with South Africa’s request earlier this year. The tour is an addition to the Zimbabwe board’s planned budget, which will impact on its ability to provide television coverage.”It will cost us a lot of money to get a broadcast deal and because this was not part of our initial plans, we have not budgeted for it,” Ozias Bvute, managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket, told ESPNcricinfo. “But South Africa are our neighbours and they requested this from us, so we will host the matches. As long as it is cost neutral, we can make it happen.” So far, the only costs Zimbabwe Cricket will incur are the South Africa team’s hotel expenses.Zimbabwe’s board is on a tight budget and made a loss on all three incoming tours hosted during the 2011-12 season. It remains committed to seeking out more competition as part of the plan to re-establish the team at Test level and will likely also host an A tour later in the winter. The five T20s will not be recognised as internationals but have instead been given practice match status because the visit is not part of the Future Tours Programme. They were organised on special request after Gary Kirsten, South Africa’s coach, asked to play more 20-over fixtures before the World Twenty20 in September. All five fixtures will be played in the afternoon to “accommodate the shorter daylight hours”, according to Zimbabwe Cricket.South Africa will arrive in Harare on June 18 and play one practice game before the back-to-back engagements start on June 20. South Africa have not been to Zimbabwe since August 2007, for an ODI series, and are not scheduled to play Tests against their neighbours until 2014, although they have sent various A teams to play first-class matches and in tri-series, as well as hosted Zimbabwe in 2010.The South Africa visit will mark the end of a five-month break for Zimbabwe, who last played in early February on their tour of New Zealand. Zimbabwe do not have any international engagements over the winter but are due to host Bangladesh in the 2012-13 season.South Africa and Zimbabwe are in the same group for the World T20, which also includes Sri Lanka. South Africa have not won an ICC trophy since 1998 and Kirsten has been tasked with changing that.

Back injury ends Tremlett's tour

Chris Tremlett is to return to England after suffering a recurrence ofa back injury

George Dobell in Abu Dhabi25-Jan-2012Chris Tremlett, the England fast bowler, is to return home from the UAE after suffering a recurrence of a back injury. England will decide upon a replacement for the remainder of the Pakistan series later today.Tremlett, the 30-year-old fast bowler, reported stiffness in his back following the first Test. He will fly back to England on Wednesday afternoon. He is the second man to fly home from this tour. Tim Bresnan hasalready been forced home with an elbow injury. Neither can blame aheavy workload having come in to the tour on the back of lengthybreaks from the game.As a consequence, the England management were in discussions with theLions management in Sri Lanka about replacements. Jade Dernbach andStuart Meaker – both of whom were born in South Africa – are the mostlikely replacements, though it is understood Meaker is not fully fit.Chris Woakes, another option, has only just returned to bowling aftera thigh injury, while Boyd Rankin is also suffering from a minor thighstrain. Jack Brooks and Nathan Buck will also be considered, but Dernbach is the overwhelming favourite.

Dhoni wins Spirit of Cricket award

MS Dhoni, the India captain, has won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award for his decision to recall Ian Bell after his controversial run-out during the Trent Bridge Test. Dhoni was unavailable to collect his award, though the Indian team was present in England.”While the initial appeal and umpire decision were correct to the letter of the law, the decision by Mahendra and his team to withdraw the appeal shows great maturity,” ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said. “To see players and officials uphold the great spirit of cricket, which has underpinned the game for more than a century, is very special.”Bell hit the last ball before tea on the third day in Nottingham towards the boundary. Having wrongly thought it had gone for four, Bell left his crease and headed towards the pavilion assuming the session was over and the ball dead. Meanwhile the ball, which had not reached the rope and therefore was still in play, was returned to the middle, the bails removed and Bell was correctly given run-out.Upon reflection during the tea interval and following a request from the England team, Dhoni withdrew the appeal and recalled Bell thus turning boos into cheers from the Nottingham crowd.Dhoni’s gesture was voted as the winner ahead of that of South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, who walked on two occasions during the World Cup after clarifying with opposition fielders directly that they had caught the ball cleanly, rather than waiting for the umpires to decide. Last year, the award had gone to the New Zealand team.

Middlesex close in but Taylor shows fight

It is understandable that Leicestershire haven’t been entirely focussed since their Twenty20 triumph on Saturday

Andrew McGlashan at Lord's01-Sep-2011
ScorecardIt is understandable that Leicestershire haven’t been entirely focussed since their Twenty20 triumph on Saturday, but after five days the foggy post-celebration haze lifted a little at Lord’s as they showed some fight in the follow-on against Middlesex. However, it won’t be enough to prevent their ninth defeat of the season while, in turn, a victory will send the home side momentarily top of the Division Two table.Even as summer turns to autumn, the same rules apply at Lord’s. If the sun is out, life is a lot tougher for the bowlers. England have previously found to their cost that asking a side to follow-on here can be the path to some hard toil and Middlesex’s bowlers had to earn their rewards – although that isn’t a bad thing because often this season Division Two wickets have fallen too easily.Middlesex only gained two breakthroughs up to tea, as Greg Smith hit 84, his first Championship fifty of the season, but inroads came during the final session including James Taylor for a determined 85. He faced 164 balls, in front of England selector James Whitaker, before gloving Tim Murtagh, armed with the second new ball, down the leg side although Middlesex were convinced they’d got him caught behind in single figures.Taylor’s display will help ease some of the frustrations of being left out of England’s Twenty20 and ODI squads having made his international debut against Ireland last week. Unlike in Dublin, where he fell to a top-edged pull, the shot was in good working order today . Overall, Taylor’s numbers for the season are impressive but it hasn’t been the most productive of summer’s in the Championship for him so a strong finish would be timely.Given he isn’t in the current England squad it appears unlikely he will make the tour to India next month (unless another player is rested) and, based on the recent India Test matches, remains behind Ravi Bopara in the pecking order for the reserve batsmen. It may be that Taylor has to be content with another winter of development for the Lions, which would actually be more beneficial than a couple of tours carrying drinks with the senior side.In the more immediate future he will need to decide where his county career lies. Leicestershire are going to offer him a new deal, but a move away – which would enable his current club to cash in – is still the likeliest option.Someone who may feature with Taylor for the Lions before next season is Toby Roland-Jones. He he has yet to gain any representative honours, but has registered interest with his economical action and ability to plug away on a nagging length. He may have already advanced further if shin splints hadn’t limited his season – this is just his sixth Championship game – but his spell post-tea was impressive. He had Josh Cobb, one of the heroes of finals day, caught behind from a loose drive that was well taken by John Simpson diving forward then produced an excellent delivery which lifted from a length to remove Ned Eckersley. When Wayne White was trapped lbw to the second new ball and Taylor followed shortly afterwards a three-day finish was on the cards but Robert Taylor and Jigar Naik erased the deficit.

Ghosh, Naeem steady Rajshahi after rocky start

A 106-run partnership between Naeem Islam and Dhiman Ghosh helped Rajshahi recover from the loss of early wickets

Dhiman Ghosh hit 10 boundaries in his 66•BCB

A 106-run partnership between Naeem Islam and Dhiman Ghosh helped Rajshahi recover from the loss of early wickets, and put them in a position from which they can overtake Dhaka’s total of 280 on the third day. Shahadat Hossain did the early damage for Dhaka, taking three wickets to reduce Rajshahi to 71 for 4.After lunch, there was a rain delay, and rather than give more assistance to the bowlers, it seemed to turn the tide in Rajshahi’s favour. Naeem played the anchor role, taking 119 balls to score his 42, while Ghosh was the aggresor, hitting 10 boundaries in his 66 off 86 balls. While Rajshahi’s spinners had taken the bulk of the wickets on the first day, Dhaka’s spinners did not follow up Hossain’s start. Hossain had disimissed Jahurul Islam, Farhad Hossain and Mushfiqur Rahim in the morning, while Mohammad Sharif got rid of Junaid Siddique. Junaid was not happy with the decision to give him out caught behind and reacted angrily. He has been fined 50% of his match-fee for showing dissent.

Man City must unleash Phil Foden vs Wolves

Manchester City are back in action tonight with an away clash against Wolves for their latest attempt to close in on the Premier League title.

Their previous game saw the Citizens pick up a comfortable 5-0 win over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Goals from Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte, Rodri and Phil Foden sealed the three points for the home side and boosted their goal difference for the season.

That win will have put Pep Guardiola’s side in a good frame of mind and full of confidence to secure a positive result against Bruno Lage’s men at Molineux.

On the chalkboard

One man who was not in the starting XI on Sunday but still ended up playing a big part in the game was Foden, who should be in from the beginning to take on Wolves tonight.

Having replaced Gabriel Jesus in the 63rd minute at the weekend, the Englishman added City’s fourth goal of the game and played a big part in their fifth.

With 16 touches of the ball in total, the 21-year-old completed all 13 passes he attempted and ultimately earned himself an overall match rating of 7.3/10 from SofaScore.

Throughout the current campaign, the youngster has scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

This not only highlights how important he is for Guardiola in terms of how often he plays, but also how much of an attacking and creative threat he is for the team.

The City manager previously lauded the England international for the “special quality” that he has, which has undoubtedly been a key factor for the team this season.

To further highlight what a deadly player the £81m-rated star is, only Gabriel Jesus (17) and Joao Cancelo (15) have racked up more goal-creating actions for City than him this season (13). This shows just how terrifying a prospect he could be for the Wolves defence.

Taking into account how the Old Gold have only conceded 34 goals in 35 league games throughout the campaign, the best record of any team outside the top three, having a player like Foden in from the beginning could be the best way for City to pick up another win and take a step closer to retaining the league title.

Also, with the Midlands club snatching a late point at Chelsea after being 2-0 down by the 58th minute last weekend, City will need to be at the top of their game once again to make sure they don’t fall into the same trap as Thomas Tuchel’s men.

Shafiq, Misbah give Pakistan control

Pakistan retained the advantage in the Hamilton Test with their batsmen edging out a testing battle against the New Zealand bowlers on a placid surface more deserving of a one-sided contest

Pakistan retained the advantage in the Hamilton Test with their batsmen edging out a testing battle against the New Zealand bowlers on a placid surface more deserving of a one-sided contest. Middle-order batsmen Asad Shafiq and Misbah-ul-Haq batted patiently to rebuild Pakistan’s reply to 275, which had lost track in the session before tea against a determined spell from the seamers. The pair provided stability to the innings and set the platform for a lead with an unbeaten 128-run stand that has eased the burden on the inexperienced line-up to follow. The bowling was unthreatening, the conditions even more so with the virtual absence of swing and movement. Such a situation lent itself to a waiting game, one that New Zealand appeared to have an upper hand in after Taufeeq Umar and Younis Khan brought about their own downfall post lunch. Misbah and Shafiq played their own waiting game, assured that the pitch would have little role to play in their dismissals and aware that a bad ball wasn’t too far away with New Zealand rotating their bowlers. Both were opportunistic, Shafiq more so than Misbah, helping offset any extended period of quiet with the occasional boundary and taking their team closer to the first-innings target.Shafiq found the boundaries with ease on a quick outfield, clipping and driving the seamers through midwicket and fine leg and using his feet well against spin. He charged out to Daniel Vettori to loft him over mid-on, rocked on the back foot to punch Kane Williamson through the covers and stepped out to part-timer Martin Guptill to smote him over midwicket. Too often did the seamers bowl on his pads – his fifty was brought up with a tickle to fine leg – but he also scored through off, driving through point and cover.Misbah’s intention was to occupy the crease and he did that well with his solidity in defence and not feeling compelled to force the pace with a fluent partner at the other end. He’s been Pakistan’s in-form batsman in Tests with three half-centuries in four innings against South Africa, and a century in the warm-up match prior to this. His first major expansive shot, quite inexplicably, came towards the end of the day; a slog-sweep for six off Williamson. He then went a notch higher, reverse-sweeping the same bowler successive boundaries to reach his half-century just two overs before stumps. For the bulk, Misbah ceded floor to Shafiq and secured one end for Pakistan. The pair built on the efforts of the Pakistan seamers, who brought about an early conclusion to New Zealand’s innings on the second morning, and Taufeeq. Tim Southee and Williamson had set up frustrated Pakistan with a fighting stand to save New Zealand the embarrassment of being bowled out for under 200 on a track full of runs. But their resistance ended this morning when Pakistan’s seamers made up for the lack of purchase from the pitch by ruffling the batsmen up with short deliveries. When the time came to defend 275, New Zealand’s bowlers were guilty of doling out freebies on the pads, Chris Martin particularly, and Taufeeq duly dispatched them. Martin was struck for three boundaries in an over, through midwicket, square leg and mid-on, while Brent Arnel paid for dropping too short, slashed and pulled to the ropes.Post lunch, however, New Zealand bowled better. Lengths were rethought and both Martin and Arnel targeted the good-length area, and angled the ball in by bowling round the wicket to the left-hander. Taufeeq, who had dealt in boundaries, became more restrained and didn’t help himself when he struggled to middle the ball when opportunities came his way. He lost a solid partner in Azhar Ali not too long after lunch, and that gave New Zealand an opening.Taufeeq fought through his frustration by reaching his first half-century since 2003 by guiding Arnel to the third-man boundary, while at the other end Younis injected some urgency to the innings. Like Taufeeq had done before lunch, Younis went after Martin, opening the face to square-drive him thrice for fours and flicking him to the fine-leg boundary. But just when it seemed Pakistan were emerging out of a difficult phase, they put themselves back into one. Taufeeq played a loose flick straight to midwicket, and Younis closed the face too early to spoon a catch back to the bowler. It was Arnel who dismissed the pair, leaving it to the captain Misbah and Shafiq to rebuild.

Spurs could make immediate Savin move

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’ John Wenham, who break news on his Lilywhites Rose social media channels, has shared what he’s been ‘told’ about transfer target Toby Savin.

The Lowdown: Spurs set sights on lower league talent…

Tottenham chief Fabio Paratici is allegedly leaving no stone unturned in his search for top talent, not excluding England’s lower leagues.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Peterborough United wing-back Benjamin Mensah and Middlesbrough starlet Djed Spence are two players who have been linked with a north London move recently and Savin, currently of Accrington Stanley, is another.

The young goalkeeper has impressed under John Coleman in recent seasons, allegedly attracting the interest of Spurs, with Wenham now sharing what he knows.

The Latest: Wenham shares what he’s been told…

As per his sources, speaking to FI, Tottenham are ‘very keen’ on Savin and the insider expects Paratici to make a move ‘as soon as the window opens’.

“I’m always happy for Tottenham to be signing up young, English talent from the lower leagues,”  he explained.

“From what I’m told, Tottenham are massively interested in him and we have had scouts watching him extensively.

“I do expect we will make a move for him as soon as the summer window opens.

“What I think could then happen is he could be loaned back to Accrington for the 2022/23 season.

“He might even be loaned to a team in the league above, I’m not sure.

“But from what I was told, Tottenham are very. very keen on him.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

Also drawing attention from the likes of Man United, Savin has arguably stood out as one of the most promising keepers in the Football League in recent seasons.

Coleman has already lavished praise on the ‘outstanding’ homegrown youngster and we believe he has the potential to be a future heir for Hugo Lloris should he continue his rise.

The colossal 6 foot 4 ace could well be one to keep an eye on.
