West Brom getting closer to signing Gayle

West Bromwich Albion have been linked with a number of players and most of those rumours have been additions to the forward line, where the side are desperately lacking goals compared to their Championship competitors above them.

There has been one proven, prolific striker, and indeed a familiar face, with whom the Baggies have been linked for a number of months.

What’s the word?

Former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has had his say on the potential signing and return of Dwight Gayle in the January transfer window, believing that the player “might be an option” for Albion.

The 56-year-old told GIVEMESPORT: “West Brom will need something in the transfer window, whether they let him go out on loan, assuming Newcastle can do good business and get their targets in, they may let him go out on loan from January until the end of the season, that might be an option.”

A loan deal to West Brom has been widely reported for the Newcastle striker over the last few months, and signing him would surely be the perfect remedy for the current situation in the goal-shy squad, given Gayle’s record in the Championship.

The £37k-p/w marksman was hailed a “natural finisher” by his former manager Steve Bruce, who gushed: “Dwight is a natural goalscorer. His instincts, his movement, all of it is a natural goalscorer’s. Left foot or right foot. Natural finisher.”

Is it the right move?

Gayle’s two most recent stints in the Championship saw him put away incredible numbers, for both his current club Newcastle and during his previous loan deal with Albion.

For the Magpies back in 2916/17, when they won automatic promotion as league winners, he scored 23 goals and bagged four assists. Then, after a season in the Premier League with the northeast club, he was loaned out to The Hawthorns in 2018, netting another 23 goals and bagging eight assists.

Some Baggies fans have been crying out for a player to come in and finish the chances which have been created for the side in the past few months given their abysmal conversion rate, especially when you consider that Grady Diangana, Jordan Hugill, Callum Robinson and Matt Phillips have just nine goals combined.

As a result, West Brom fans will surely be buzzing if they can secure a finisher like Gayle on a short-term deal to try and see Albion over the line to gain automatic promotion back to the Premier League for next season.

Everton could play Calvert-Lewin v Burnley

Loads of Everton fans were reacting to some early team news that has emerged ahead of their game away at Burnley in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

As per Patrick Boyland, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has said that he is now ‘hoping’ to return from injury against the Clarets at Turf Moor, in what The Athletic journalist claims would be a ‘boost’ for the Goodison Park faithful.

The striker has been out injured since August, and scored three goals in his first three games of the season (Transfermarkt). This, added to the 21 goals that he managed as the Merseyside club’s top scorer last term, shows just how important he is to the team, and so to have him back would be a big welcome.

However, with a longer term injury, some Toffees supporters are cautious that he is not rushed back, and are just hopeful that he is fit enough to play some part.

Wolves fans happy with FA Cup draw

Some Wolves supporters are in confident spirits after Wanderers were drawn at home to Sheffield United in the third round of the FA Cup.

It has been a largely positive start to the season for Bruno Lage’s men, who sit eighth in the Premier League with 15 matches played.

There is still plenty of work to be done if Wolves have genuine hopes of securing a European finish but the positives outweigh the negatives currently.

Away from the Premier League, there is always the chance of silverware in the FA Cup, as Wanderers look to lift the trophy for the first time since way back in 1960.

On Monday evening, Wolves were pitted against the Blades in the third round draw, with the tie taking place at Molineux early next month.

United are currently 10th in the Championship so all things point towards Lage’s team making it into the fourth round.

Celtic: Hodge questions Dermot Desmond

Dermot Desmond may believe he has achieved all that he can at Celtic and is now looking to hand increasing responsibility to his son.

That’s according to journalist Stuart Hodge, who was speaking to Give Me Sport.

The lowdown

Irish businessman Desmond is the largest individual shareholder at the Glasgow club, but back in March this year, he was compelled to deny any suggestion that his shares were up for sale.

He also insisted in that interview that he was ‘as passionate about Celtic as any other supporter’, and that any accusation to the contrary was ‘contemptible’.

Since Desmond first invested in the Hoops in 1995, they have bagged 16 Premiership titles, 11 Scottish Cups and 10 Scottish League Cups. Under Martin O’Neill, they also reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 2003.

The latest

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Hodge pointed to the 2016/17 season, when Brendan Rodgers led Celtic to one of four domestic trebles without losing a single Premiership game, as the inevitable peak of the Desmond era. He added that the businessman may be looking to pass on his involvement in the club to his offspring.

Hodge said: “In terms of domestically, Brendan Rodgers swept house. It means he has basically achieved everything that he wanted to. He has done an unbeaten domestic season where they won a treble and you don’t get better than that.

“Is his love for it there and is his ambition what it was? I think there are question marks over that. I know for a fact that he’s looking to pass more of the responsibility onto his son.”

Celtic: Joseph drops Barkas transfer update

Celtic are willing to let Vasilis Barkas leave Parkhead either on a temporary or permanent basis in the January transfer window.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a claim made by Anthony Joseph, with the Sky Sports journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that, following his exclusion from Ange Postecoglou’s matchday squad against Real Betis on Thursday evening, the 27-year-old goalkeeper does not appear to have a future in Glasgow.

Joseph went on to state that, in order for the club to give themselves the best possible chance of getting the Greece international off of their books this winter, they will be open to sanctioning a loan or permanent deal for the shot-stopper.

In his tweet, the journalist said: “I think it’s fair to say Celtic will also be open to a loan or permanent move for Vasilis Barkas next month – not in the squad [against Betis], suggests he’s no longer in the first-team plans.”

Fans will be delighted

Considering just how poor Barkas has been since making a £5m move to Parkhead back in the summer of 2020, reports that the club are hoping to part ways with the goalkeeper this January is sure to have left Celtic fans delighted.

Indeed, over his 15 Premiership appearances last season, the £2.52m-rated ‘keeper conceded an average of 0.7 goals and made just one save per game. These returns saw the 27-year-old earn a disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.79, ranking him as the Bhoys’ ninth-worst performer in the league.

This season, the ‘keeper has found his game-time even more limited, making just one first team appearance since Postecoglou’s appointment at the club in the summer – and that was way back in July.

As such, considering that Barkas is reported to be earning a whopping £20k-per-week at Parkhead, the club simply must do all they can to rid themselves of the goalkeeper in January. While the Hoops will more than likely make a substantial loss in selling him, his hefty weekly wage could easily be put to much better use by Postecoglou in the winter market.

West Indies in no mood to slack

Floyd Reifer has ruled out any possibility of West Indies slacking against India even though they have been ousted from the tournament

Floyd Reifer has ruled out any possibility of West Indies slacking against India even though they have been ousted from the tournament. West Indies play their final match in the tournament tomorrow and Reifer was confident his team could pull off a shock win, one that would send India home as well.”We’re going to play the game at the same intensity as before,” he said. “We’re looking to improve every game; it’s about improvement for us as individuals and as a team. Though we can’t qualify we’re still going to play hard, tough cricket.”In one-day cricket the team that plays better on the day has a good chance of winning. India are a good side, they have a lot of stars, they play a lot of one-day cricket but we’re going to approach the game the same way we approached the first two.”Though they have lost two matches, a depleted West Indies had their moments against Pakistan and Australia a few scares. Gavin Tonge made Pakistan sweat in their chase of a small target and Kemar Roach’s pace posed a few hiccups for Australia on a two-paced pitch.”We can take a lot of positives from the tournament,” said Reifer. “Some of our guys bowled well, couple of our guys batted well, and as a team I think we played pretty good cricket. We have a good squad of fast bowlers; the guys have a lot of talent and are just looking to explode on the international circuit.”Tonge is very tall and bowls a good line and length. Roach is very fast, I think he bowled the fastest ball in the tournament so far. He’s very quick through the air and he has a bright, bright future in West Indies and international cricket.”

Postecoglou must finally unleash Shaw

While things at Celtic appear to be increasingly on the up under the management of Ange Postecoglou, with the Bhoys currently on a run of six games without defeat in all competitions, there are nevertheless a number of positions in the 56-year-old’s first-team squad that are lacking a considerable amount of depth.

Indeed, in a recent article for The Athletic, Kieran Devlin highlighted Celtic’s need for an adequate replacement for Callum McGregor in the number six role, as, during the four-game period in which the central midfielder was sidelined back in September, the Hoops clearly lacked a player who could replicate the 28-year-old’s “passing range, speed of thought and execution to accelerate attacks.”

However, before Postecoglou enters the January transfer market in search of a backup for the Scotland international, perhaps it would be wise to take a closer look at one of the club’s summer signings first – in the shape of Liam Shaw.

Indeed, after joining the club on a free transfer back in July, the 20-year-old said of his style: “I describe myself as a box-to-box midfielder, a lot of energy running up and down, I can score a goal, and be aggressive in that I like a tackle and I like to press people.”

This is something that was evident in his 19 Championship appearances for Sheffield Wednesday last season, over which the £315k-rated man scored one goal and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.3 key passes, 0.7 tackles and taking 0.5 shots per game.

While these statistics are not exactly mind-blowing, it must be remembered that his returns came while the midfielder was enjoying his breakthrough season in professional football within a side who were fighting at the wrong end of the Championship table – before ultimately suffering relegation.

Indeed, it is clear to see that the foundations are undoubtedly there for Shaw to blossom into a fine number six, something that will be developed further with more experience of first-team football.

However, with the 20-year-old being yet to make an appearance in the Scottish Premiership under the management of Postecoglou, it would appear a very wise move for the Bhoys boss to finally unleash the rarely-seen Shaw in the coming weeks and months, as the midfielder could prove to solve one of the 56-year-old’s biggest issues at Parkhead.

'Teams fear us' – Gayle

Through two Tests, three one-day internationals and a Twenty20 practice match, West Indies had played the role of Peter McNeeley to England’s Mike Tyson

Alex Brown at The Oval15-Jun-2009

‘We were written off from the start of the tournament and we’re actually in the semi-final. If you look at each and everyone of our players and we’re actually winners’•Getty Images

Through two Tests, three one-day internationals and a Twenty20 practice match, West Indies had played the role of Peter McNeeley to England’s Mike Tyson. Each crushing bodyblow took with it confidence and reputation, and if John Dyson had at his disposal a white towel, it would presumably have sailed over the ropes sometime around the third ODI.Then came the shot at redemption. Already million-dollar babies after their Stanford payday, West Indies positioned themselves for a shot at a recognised belt with impressive World Twenty20 victories over tournament heavyweights India and Australia, and stoic defeats to title contenders Sri Lanka and South Africa. Standing in their way were the bruisers of England. Rocky films should pine for such a plot.In the end, as with all good rags-to-riches tales, victory was both sweet and hard-earned. All but written off after their disastrous summer campaign – which, for good measure, included one final nine-wicket thumping to England in a pre-tournament 20-over warm-up – the Windies defied critics and opponents alike to qualify for the World Twenty20 semi-finals with a nerve-shredding victory over their recent conquerers. After losing five early wickets in a rain-reduced run-chase – each a standing-eight count of its own – it was left to Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan to guide West Indies past England’s revised target of 80 with a composed stand of 37 from 20 balls. The veteran duo have been called upon to dig the Windies out of many a jam over the years, but their recent Twenty20 form – 71 runs in a combined eight matches prior to Monday – made this pursuit that little less predictable, that little more special.”After the disaster of the tour here in England we wanted to give the supporters something to cheer about,” Chris Gayle said. “It was good to see them in the stands cheering and jumping. We’re trying to entertain and at the same time we’re trying to get a few victories under our belts. We looked really happy and we’re just trying to finish off on a high. I’m really proud of the guys and the way they’ve gone about it right through the tournament. It’s been a long, hard summer for us and to be in the semi-finals is brilliant.”The signs looked ominous for West Indies when, barely a minute before the coin toss, Fidel Edwards was struck down with back pain while warming up. Those concerns were compounded when Ravi Bopara and Kevin Pietersen combined for a spirited second-wicket stand of 56, raising the expectations and volume of The Oval faithful.Momentum began to lurch back the Windies’ way when Lendl Simmons, fast emerging as a true Twenty20 trump in this tournament, claimed the vital wicket of Pietersen, and further still when Dwayne Bravo accounted for Owais Shah and Paul Collingwood. But the true shift in power came with the news that England’s competitive total of 161 for 6 had been reduced to a far more accessible Duckworth-Lewis target of 80 from nine overs. Reckless batting could hardly be punished with a full ten wickets in hand.”As I was looking at the game, it was one big over away from getting to a run-a-ball,” Sarwan said. “We were calm and I had the support of Shiv at the next end. We both are experienced players and we’ve experienced situations like this before. It wasn’t really too hard.”The bad vibes of a summer of discontent were dispelled to the dark recesses of the mind when the Windies stormed the field en masse following Sarwan’s match-winning drive to the boundary. The images were reminiscent of those that accompanied West Indies stunning Champions Trophy victory at this very ground in 2004, and Gayle believes his rejuvinated team can emulate that feat in the World Twenty20 finals”To be honest with you, a lot of teams fear us,” he said. “We were written off from the start of the tournament and we’re actually in the semi-final. If you look at each and everyone of our players and we’re actually winners.”
