Spurs star must be given the Dier treatment

Another game, more points dropped and another defensive mistake. That’s very much been the tale of Tottenham Hotspur’s tumultuous season.

On Easter Sunday, Jose Mourinho’s side squandered the chance to move back into the Premier League’s top four after Newcastle United fired home a late equaliser at St James’ Park.

This time, as it often has been, it was Davinson Sanchez who made the critical blunder as he clattered into central defensive teammate Joe Rodon, allowing Joe Willock to ghost in unmarked to score just five minutes before full-time.

It’s now time for Mourinho to give him the ‘Eric Dier’ treatment…

On the Chalkboard

Spurs have now lost 15 points from winning positions over the course of the 2020/21 season. Had they seen out those matches, the north Londoners would be sat behind league leaders Man City in second place and four points ahead of Manchester United in third.

The majority of this boils down to errors in the backline and, according to the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold at football.london, Mourinho is after a defensive leader as a top priority in the summer transfer window.

He also claims that ‘there has been a clear lack of cohesion at times in the backline and leadership’ and, despite being the most vocal of all Spurs’ options, Dier has found himself now out of favour.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= Read this week’s latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more…”]

Indeed, the 27-year-old England international is no longer first choice and has actually been snubbed from the starting XI in their last six league outings. It seems as if the West Ham defeat was the final straw for Mourinho.

However, it’s clear now that Dier was not the problem, or at least isn’t an anomaly.

Against the Magpies, Sanchez was the only player to grade worse than a mediocre 6.5 rating, as per SofaScore figures.

Just last month, ex-Sheffield United midfielder Curtis Woodhouse took to Twitter to launch a scathing attack on the Colombian, claiming that he’s “just not a very good defender” and that he “probably costs you 20 goals a season.”

Similarly, pundit and former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara suggested that Sanchez was part of one of the worst defensive partnerships in the division following their north London derby defeat, soon after slamming him as “disgraceful” and the “worst player” despite scoring in the Everton FA Cup loss.

The latest criticism came after this weekend’s fiasco, as former Republic of Ireland captain Kenny Cunningham dubbed him a “real liability” when he’s at his worst when speaking on the OTB podcast.

It’s unfair that Dier continues to be ostracised when these game-altering mistakes keep cropping up from the Colombian. It’s also farcical that Toby Alderweireld has been overlooked despite the uncertainty over both the Englishman and Sanchez.

The £31.5m-rated South American must now get the same treatment as Dier. He has no business starting for the club heading into the summer, especially if Spurs land a new defensive arrival.

LFC fans hail Salah’s brilliance for Egypt

A number of Liverpool fans have been reacting to a stunning run by Mohamed Salah during international duty with Egypt.

The 28-year-old has matured into one of the biggest names in world football in the last few years following his incredible performances for the Reds.

Salah has scored a remarkable 119 goals in 192 appearances for Liverpool, chipping in with 45 assists for good measure.

This season, the Egyptian has carried his side’s attack in many ways, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino out of form and Diogo Jota injured for several months.

It isn’t just at club level where Salah is the main man, either, with the world-class forward Egypt’s undisputed star player. He has scored 43 times in 69 caps for his country, inspiring them to the 2018 World Cup, and is mobbed everywhere he goes in his homeland.

On Monday, Salah produced a stunning Lionel Messi-esque run in during Egpyt’s 4-0 win over Comoros, with the Reds superstar also scoring twice.

Liverpool fans laud Salah

Here are the best reactions from Reds supporters on Twitter as they showed their love for Salah.

Man United’s Shaw proving Mourinho wrong

Luke Shaw’s dramatic career turnaround has certainly been stark and one that has proven former Red Devils’ boss Jose Mourinho wrong.

The Manchester United defender is enjoying a stunning campaign throughout 2020/21. He has started 36 games in all competitions, racking up six assists and scoring once, even keeping summer signing Alex Telles constantly marooned to the bench.

For a player who was constantly castigated by former manager Mourinho for his “attitude”, Shaw has certainly got one over the Portuguese.

His all-around game is one of the most eye-catching in the entire squad. According to WhoScored, the defender is averaging 1.4 tackles per game. Only four players in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad are providing more.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-man-united-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=” Latest Man United transfer rumours and news!”]

Meanwhile, he has also been a hugely potent weapon going forwards by contributing 2.1 key passes for game. For context, these are the highest numbers throughout his career in the Premier League and are only bettered by the inspirational Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford.

Praised for his “brilliant” performances by former Red Devils midfielder Roy Keane, the ex-Southampton full-back has even taken that excellent form onto the international stage by assisting Harry Kane for England’s opening goal against Albania on Sunday evening.

He now looks to be one of the first names on the teamsheet having started 30 matches this season, the second-most in his entire United career, and also returned to Three Lions contention for the first time since September 2018.

Only played 55 times in all competitions by the current Tottenham Hotspur boss Mourinho in his two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, the defender has already played 92 matches under his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the same amount of time– faith that has certainly been rewarded.

It goes without saying then Shaw, who earns £150k per week at Old Trafford, will be aiming to continue his career turnaround throughout the remainder of the season and will hopefully aim to prove Mourinho wrong even more.

Gers fans slam Balogun vs Slavia

Glasgow Rangers’ European dream came to an end last night against Slavia Prague at Ibrox, and Leon Balogun was partly to blame for the Gers’ collapse.

The 55-time Scottish champions drew 1-1 in Czechia in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 clash and will have been hoping to get the job done at home. However, they ended up losing 2-0 in the return match and therefore were defeated 3-1 on aggregate.

Balogun, in particular, struggled against Slavia. His lack of pace was clear, he lost possession 15 times (SofaScore) and he was also sent off for a second bookable offence in the second half. That dismissal came after Kemar Roofe had already been given his marching orders for a stomach-churning tackle on goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar – Balogun made his side’s job even harder.

The Gers supporters were far from happy with his display, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about Balogun below

“Balogun was shocking since the first minute, probably should of gave a penalty away and then gets sent off. Disaster.”

Liverpool must beat Manchester United to Raphael Varane signing - opinion

Since Virgil van Dijk sustained his long-term injury against Everton at Goodison Park, Liverpool have been linked with a raft of centre-backs.

The Reds managed to bring in both Schalke 04’s Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies of Preston North End in the January transfer window but those arrivals have not stemmed the tide of the rumour mill and one of the latest names to be linked is Raphael Varane of Real Madrid.

As per Mundo Deportivo, the Reds are reportedly the ‘main club’ thought to be interested in acquiring his services.

However, reports in the Manchester Evening News suggest that Manchester United are eyeing the Frenchman as a signing – something that the Reds cannot afford to let happen.

The 27-year-old, whoever he signs for, would instantly improve a defence’s quality. In his time in Madrid, he has played a key role in four UEFA Champions League successes, as well as three La Liga title wins. He’s also been capped 70 times by France and is a World Cup winner to boot.

It’s not his personal trophy haul that would improve the Reds’ however, his sheer statistics also speak for themselves.

When compared to Joe Gomez, who he would likely displace in the Reds’ starting lineup, the Frenchman contributes more tackles, interceptions and blocks, as well as fewer fouls per 90 minutes, according to WhoScored.

His presence at the back would hugely help a defence that has been extremely leaky this season having conceded 34 goals all season.

It is not just imperative that the Reds bring in Varane though; it is crucial that they stop Manchester United from recruiting him.

For a long-time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Red Devils have also struggled defensively, with a new centre-back to partner Harry Maguire thought to be high on their priorities.

Currently the top scorers in the Premier League this season and boasting the talents of Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes, it appears that Varane could be the missing piece in the Red Devils assembling a title challenge.

Liverpool would, obviously, rather get back to competing for a title first though and that could start with the arrival of Varane.

Celtic exclusive: Pundit delivers verdict on their massive injury blow

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, pundit Steve Howey delivered his verdict on the huge injury blow suffered to Celtic defender Christopher Jullien.

The centre-back was stretchered off against Dundee with significant swelling to his knee and scans have now revealed that he will face around four months out with a serious issue.

It’s a huge blow to Celtic’s hopes of retaining the SPFL title. They were already 19 points behind their rivals Rangers coming into this weekend’s fixtures and it looks like an uphill task.

Jullien has already suffered from a spell on the sidelines this season so his campaign has now got even worse. For a Hoops backline who have conceded on such a regular basis, it’s not great news for the team either.

They shipped 19 goals in just six Europa League outings and their defensive woes were bad enough before losing one of their key men.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Howey delivered a damning verdict on Jullien’s injury. He said:

“It’s obviously a big disappointment and I think it’s a huge disappointment, and you just hope the lad gets back fit and well and stronger and better.”

Howey then opened up on the title race: “Listen, let’s be honest, it would have been a miraculous recovery if they did get anywhere near clawing that back. I think it’s done. I still think there’s 40 something points to play for so it’s still within the realms of possibility, but it’s a tall order.

“I mean, Rangers have to go on an absolutely horrendous run and have so many injuries and Celtic have to do exactly the opposite. But as I said, I think after that game at the weekend, and Rangers winning and bearing in mind, winning and not playing very well. Albeit, the lad did get sent off but I think that was the last chance.”

Celtic’s six-game winning run in all competitions before the New Year helped boost their confidence significantly but after suffering a loss to Rangers, any slight hope of beating Steven Gerrard’s men to the title are all but gone.

The Hoops have been rumoured with signing a new centre-back this month and that has only taken on greater importance with Jullien’s injury.

Crystal Palace target Jordan Amavi is the perfect Patrick van Aanholt replacement

Steve Parish can deliver Crystal Palace their next Patrick van Aanholt in Marseille defender Jordan Amavi.

What’s the word?

According to L’Equipe, Marseille are worried about Amavi’s future at the Orange Velodrome as he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old uncapped former France international has been linked with a possible move to Selhurst Park as the Eagles are tracking a number of potential replacements for Patrick van Aanholt, with his contract set to run out in the summer.

Palace prioritised several other positions in the off-season as Parish sought to bolster Roy Hodgson’s arsenal of attacking options in the summer after Alexander Sorloth left the club for RB Leipzig.

With the winter transfer window fast approaching, Marseille coach Andre Villas-Boas is believed to be concerned that the club are running out of time to sell one of their valuable assets before his contract expires, which is something that Parish could look to exploit.

Perfect PVA replacement

If Parish can get a deal over the line in January, Hodgson could see the Eagles land their next Van Aanholt, with the former Aston Villa starlet once described as a “terrific” talent after he signed a five-year deal at Villa Park.

Amavi spent two years at Aston Villa before joining Marseille in 2017, helping the Olympians reach the Europa League final a year later.

It goes without saying that he has become one of the top players in Europe in his position, with Villas-Boas recently heaping praise on the 26-year-old in an interview with La Provence.

The former Chelsea boss said: “Amavi is one of the players who has improved the most. He has a great frame of mind.”

His ability to break up attacks, combined with his ability to dribble past players as well as being a strong threat in the air, is something that sets him apart from the rest of his competitors, as Marcos Alonso has often been criticised for his lack of pace.

Valued at £9m via Transfermarkt, in eight appearances in Ligue 1, the left-back has scored one goal so far this season, whilst he is averaging 1.4 tackles, 3.3 interceptions and 2.9 clearances per game, via WhoScored.

In contrast, even Van Aanholt has only mustered 1.3 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 0.8 clearances on average per game in the Premier League this season so far, as per WhoScored.

Suffice it to say the young Frenchman would be an upgrade on the 30-year-old, who didn’t cover himself in glory against Newcastle United last month, and is arguably entering the twilight of his career.
