Barcelona fans react to another Samuel Umtiti injury

Another day, another Samuel Umtiti injury.

The 25-year-old French defender simply can’t catch a break as of late and time might be running out for him due to his constant fitness issues.

Even though he made his first appearance of the season last weekend when Barcelona beat Eibar 3-0, Umtiti suffered a new injury shortly after that clash.

Barcelona left Umtiti out of their squad for the trip to Slavia Prague due to a knee injury and many of the fans immediately swarmed their social media account with worried messages and panicked replies.

Many of them seem to think this was Umtiti’s last chance and that he should now definitely be sold.

One fan even compared him to Thomas Vermaelen, a former Barcelona defender who had similar issues with constant injuries while he was at the club.

At this rate, it seems that some of them are already giving up on Umtiti and will not give him another chance.

You can see some of their replies down in the collection of tweets below.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani will have no more excuses if QSI invest

Who will be the hero of a potential return to the big time at Leeds?

It’s an open question, one that would provoke many a response. Marcelo Bielsa is the brains behind the team but Victor Orta was the man to thank for bringing the likes of Ben White and Eddie Nketiah to the club.

Andrea Radrizzani, however, has changed the landscape – certainly from an investment point of view.

While the Italian has made mistakes in the past, something he’s willingly admitted to, he could be on the verge of securing a colossal deal that puts Leeds back at the top table.

For better or for worse, it might change the face of the football club. If it doesn’t however, there would be no excuses left for a businessman who has come so far, yet still missed out on promotion.

Leeds’ owner has been open in the past about possible investment at Elland Road but never has it felt so close and such a feasible option for Radrizzani.

The club is stuck at a crossroads now where investment this season would be massive, yet they also risk upsetting the upper powers who deal with profit and sustainability laws.

A few weeks ago he was his most transparent about new assets. In a lengthy interview with The Times, he claimed that Qatar Sports Investments could put them on a par with Manchester City.

Since he walked through the door at Thorp Arch, this was perhaps his biggest statement yet.

The 45-year-old has overseen a revival of sorts at Leeds. Before he appointed Bielsa, they were a team languishing in mid-table.

They now stand on the verge of the Premier League – they can nearly taste England’s top-flight again. Yet, at the same time, it has never felt so far away.

A third-placed finish and ultimate playoff failure last season has put the club under huge pressures, particularly with a wage bill now nearing £40m.

If they don’t achieve promotion in 2019/20, they will be staring at the need to cut that down significantly. Will Bielsa leave? It’s not beyond the realms of possibility given his track record.

After all, it was a surprise he even signed a new deal back in May.

But the sheer revenue QSI have earned from their relationship with European heavyweights PSG has been gigantic. It’s money that if replicated at Leeds would surely see them back among some of the elite clubs.

That is a distant dream but it’s certainly not impossible.

However big a stake Nasser al-Khelaifi does end up investing in Leeds, that’s if he even does, would leave Radrizzani and the club with huge demands.

The PSG owner is incredibly wealthy and if he does indeed plough money into Leeds this term, they’d be left with no excuses in terms of earning promotion now or further down the line.

It would lift the burden on the wage bill but it would also serve as a double-edged sword. Investment is a good thing but it might actually be the factor that sees Radrizzani leave Leeds altogether.

BBC journalist Adam Pope claimed in September that it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’d left in a year’s time. That tells you all you need to know.

Even if the Whites end up achieving promotion and backing from Qatar subsequently comes in over the summer instead, the pressure would be felt again.

The stresses of living up to what Radrizzani has documented about Man City would become a reality.

There is clearly a plan in place at Leeds. Angus Kinnear has a vision for a 50,000 capacity Elland Road if they go up and further investment would almost definitely benefit that.

It’s easy to forget just where added monetary muscle took Aston Villa. They were a club spiralling down until Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris pumped their financial prowess into the Midlands.

They eventually went up and a similar scenario could play out further north in England.

However, there would be a larger weight of anticipation. Not only would Leeds be expected to merely stay up in the Premier League, but competing among some of the best in the division seems to be on the agenda too.

If they failed to achieve promotion and eventually compete with the top ten Premier League clubs following QSI’s backing, the investment would surely be regarded as a big failure.

This deal has the potential to be game-changing for Leeds, but it might also be the tectonic shift that sees Radrizzani lose his job.

He and Leeds need to tread very carefully and come to the best possible agreement for the club’s future.

Rangers’ Gary McAllister gives injury update on Ryan Kent

[ad_pod ]

Rangers winger Ryan Kent is edging back to full fitness after getting injured against Livingston earlier this month, but Gers assistant manager Gary McAllister has said that the club will not rush him back.

What’s the word?

McAllister was speaking to the press earlier this week as the Gers prepared for a Scottish League Cup quarter-final – against Livingston funnily enough – when he took time to offer an injury update on some of the club’s stars.

Quoted by the club’s official Twitter account, he said of attacking players Ryan Kent and Jordan Jones:

“It’s great to see Kent and Jones starting to move again. They won’t be rushed but they are improving.”

Kent, of course, was injured during his second debut for the club, just days after signing for the Gers on a permanent basis, with him picking up a hamstring pull.

Jordan Jones, for that matter, has been injured a little longer after clattering Moritz Bauer in the Old Firm derby at the end of August and getting a red card for his troubles.

McAllister’s vow will no doubt sit well with Gers fans, though, with the club seemingly taking the approach to ease Kent back into first-team duties.

Verdict

Right at the end of the window, Rangers sealed Kent’s signature and the enthusiasm was clear to see amongst the coaching staff, who threw Kent straight into a game days after.

With little match fitness having not played for Liverpool at the start of the season, Kent was always going to be at risk of pulling something and, duly, he did.

It appears as though the club have learned their lesson, judging by McAllister’s comments, though, and so Kent should come back into the side when he is fully ready, rather than when he’s wanted back in.

Fans should be happy with this course of action. Having Kent on the pitch a little later in the season and fully fit rather than earlier and then out for another period should be the preferred option.

Leeds fans discuss Andrea Petagna transfer links

[ad_pod ]

Leeds are in danger of heading into the new Championship season with just Patrick Bamford as their main striker following an injury to Kemar Roofe.

Whether they decide to return to the transfer market remains to be seen but Tutto Mercato Web have laid claims that that’s exactly what they’ve done.

Tancredi Palmeri reports on the website that Leeds have submitted a bid worth €15m (£13.7m) for SPAL’s Andrea Petagna.

However, it’s a rumour that has caused debate among Leeds supporters with some refusing to believe it’ll happen.

One said the club didn’t have a prayer of landing him after he was linked to Leicester for €20m (£18.3m) earlier this year. Another simply said there was no chance that it would go through.

Further fans decided to compare the 24-year-old to former Leeds players as one said he was just like Pierre-Michel Lasogga, someone who scored ten goals in 33 matches for the club. He was also branded as the Italian Billy Paynter.

Petagna netted 17 goals in all competitions in Italy last term but according to Palmeri, SPAL are hoping for a fee closer to €25m (£22.9m) for his services.

Here’s the best of the discussion.

Tottenham’s tiers of Argentine signings amid Lo Celso and Dybala links

[ad_pod ]

[long_read]

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on a move to sign Real Betis attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

Earlier this week The Daily Mirror claimed the club could secure the Argentina international for a fee of between £54m and £60m.

And just at the point when optimism surrounding the transfer market was returning to Spurs fans, the rumour mill threw up a link from the footballing stratosphere.

Indeed, according to The London Evening Standard, contact has been made with Juventus over a potential record-breaking swoop for Paulo Dybala.

Any such deal for either Lo Celso or Dybala will follow the acquisitions of Jack Clarke from Leeds United and Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

The signing of the latter broke the club’s transfer record and a deal for either of the South American targets could well see that broken for the second time in one transfer window.

Spurs, though, have a chequered history when it comes to buying Argentine players.

There are a number of tiers involved for players brought in from an elite footballing nation.

Football FanCast takes a look at the list of Argentines to strut their stuff in north London, excluding Mauricio Pochettino who, obviously, has never pulled on a Spurs shirt.

Still, he’d probably be quite high up if he had.

[snack_break title=”Appalling tier – Federico Fazio”]

Signed from Sevilla for £8m to add some solidity to the Spurs backline, Fazio did pretty much the exact opposite.

He made 32 appearances for the club despite not really knowing how to tackle and also having a turn of pace that makes the largest of container ships look positively rapid.

In those games, Spurs kept a clean sheet just eight times.

Fazio was eventually sold in 2017 after two loan spells, first back to Sevilla and then to Roma, where he made the move permanent.

Spurs haven’t missed him. Not one bit.

[snack_break title=”Rotation tier – Juan Foyth, Paulo Gazzaniga”]

Juan Foyth is a young defender who could yet blossom into an excellent one. At the time of writing, however, he’s made just 25 appearances for the club.

It would be unfair to put him anywhere else on this list.

The same, really, can be said of Paulo Gazzaniga. Signed as a back-up to Hugo Lloris, he has performed reasonably well whenever he has been called upon but that has not happened all that often.

Indeed, he has made a total of 12 appearances for the club, though he is a good shot-stopper and a calm presence between the sticks.

If he continues to play and impress he’ll rise.

[snack_break title=”Polarising tier – Erik Lamela”]

This one is controversial.

Erik Lamela has been almost ever-present in the Spurs squad since his move to the club in the wake of Gareth Bale’s departure.

He is closing in on 200 appearances for the club and yet he has never really nailed down a spot in the starting XI.

He has scored 29 goals and registered 41 assists, but is not anywhere near as important as the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen or Heung-Min Son.

Lamela is a quick and skilful and has an excellent eye for a pass but is still regarded as nothing more than a squad player.

He can’t be any higher here, because his contributions must also be weighed against his £25.8m fee; he has not lived up to it.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

[snack_break title=”Understated tier – Mauricio Taricco”]

Signed by George Graham, Mauricio Taricco was a dependable presence on the left side of the Spurs defence.

He made 143 appearances for the club in total, scoring two goals, and was always steady, allying robustness in the challenge to a desire to sprint forward and join the attack.

He is far from the most spectacular Argentine acquisition a Premier League club has ever made but he never once let Spurs down.

Taricco may not make it into too many of these lists but his contributions should not be forgotten.

[snack_break title=”Legend tier – Ricky Villa, Ossie Ardiles”]

The duo that started it all.

Ricardo Villa came into the club and is remembered for scoring perhaps the best ever goal the club has seen, setting them on their way to victory in the FA Cup final replay of 1981 against Manchester City.

A mazy dribble that saw him beat numerous defenders before slotting home, Villa was awarded the Wembley Goal of the Century award in 2001.

He spent a total of five years in north London, while Osvaldo Ardiles spent a decade at the club, helping them win both the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup.

Ardiles, of course, came back in 1993, managing the club to a 15th-placed finish.

It is fair to say that his spell as a player was far more successful and he is remembered as a diminutive, skilled midfielder who helped take the club to great heights alongside his Argentine compatriot.

Aston Villa fans buzzing with Tyrone Mings update

[ad_pod ]

According to journalist Gregg Evans on Twitter, Tyrone Mings is nearing a return to Aston Villa after the club agreed a £20m deal with Bournemouth.

Mings starred for the club on loan last term, helping them achieve promotion and win a club-record ten games on the bounce towards the back end of the season.

Therefore this signing could be major for the Midlands outfit after already bringing back two loan players in Anwar El Ghazi and Kortney Hause.

Unsurprisingly, Villa fans were absolutely buzzing with the transfer news as they flocked to Twitter to reveal their delight. One supporter called it absolutely superb and another claimed it would be the most important transfer so far.

A further fan commented that they couldn’t be happier whilst one individual went as far as calling him a new Aston Villa legend.

Mings featured 18 times for the Villans after arriving for a temporary stay in January. Crediting assistant manager John Terry for the move, he won 3 aerial duels per game, making a massive 4.3 clearances every 90 minutes, too.

The 26-year-old also popped up with two goals after initially moving over the winter.

Here’s some of the reaction.
