South Australia fast bowler Kane Richardson will miss their next Sheffield Shield game, against Western Australia from February 16, after being suspended for using foul language during a grade cricket match. He was given a one-match suspension for breaching Cricket Australia’s code of behaviour while turning out for East Torrens on February 1. Misbah out of remaining New Zealand one-dayers

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq will take no further part in the one-day series against New Zealand, having picked up a hamstring injury during the second ODI on Friday. Shahid Afridi will lead the side in his absence.Misbah sustained the injury in the third over of New Zealand’s chase in Sharjah, and did not take the field for the rest of the game. The PCB is yet to decide whether Misbah will stay with the team or return to Pakistan. His injury comes at a crucial time for Pakistan, as the team tries to firm up its combination and build momentum ahead of the World Cup in February and March. The series against New Zealand is currently tied at 1-1, with three games to play. The third ODI will be played on Sunday, in Sharjah.Pakistan are also without fast bowler Umar Gul and allrounder Bilawal Bhatti for these matches. Gul, who had made his return to international cricket in this series after a long injury layoff, was left out of the second ODI due to a bruised tendon in his left ankle. Bhatti, meanwhile, is out with a hand injury.

Can Australia secure another series?

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the second T20 between Australia and England in Melbourne

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale30-Jan-20140:00

‘Selection issues loom large for England’

Match FactsJanuary 31, 2014, Melbourne
Start time 1935 local (0835GMT)Big PictureDifferent format, different players, same result. That was the case in Hobart on Wednesday, when Australia’s Twenty20 specialists continued England’s miserable tour with a 13-run victory that was set up by a powerful batting performance. England now find themselves needing to win the second game in Melbourne to have any hope of flying home with a series win at the end of a long and arduous trip.England’s batting was reasonable enough to get them up to 200, albeit with the help of some late and futile striking from Ravi Bopara, but it was their bowling that caused the problems, unable as they were to contain Cameron White and Aaron Finch in the early stages of the match. England might also have another talented Victorian batsman to keep in check at the MCG with the recall of Brad Hodge to the side for the first time in nearly six years.Form guide(Completed matches, most recent first)
Australia WLLWL
England LWLLWWatch out forLast time Brad Hodge played a Twenty20 for his country the first season of the IPL had not even begun. Now, Hodge is the leading run-scorer of all time in Twenty20 cricket, but at 39 he believed his international career was long since finished. The cynical view of his recall would be that it might help ticket sales at his home ground, but he knows that with plenty of T20 experience in Bangladesh, he could be an attractive proposition for Australia’s selectors with the World T20 to be held there in less than two months. A strong performance in this match would make him hard to ignore. The scorecard for the first match would suggest that Ravi Bopara got England close to their target with his unbeaten 65 from 27 balls, but the reality is that his sixes came too late for England to have any hope of victory. That they came at all should be encouraging for England, though, given that Bopara struggled for batting impact during the ODI series. The question is, can he do it again? Can Ravi Bopara recreate his late hitting from the Hobart match?•Getty Images

Team newsThe Melbourne fans would be disappointed if Hodge was included in the squad only to miss out, but apart from swapping him for Moises Henriques it is hard to imagine any other batting changes after the success in Hobart. Josh Hazlewood was expensive with the ball and might be under pressure from either Ben Cutting or Kane Richardson.Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Cameron White, 3 Brad Hodge, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Chris Lynn, 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Matthew Wade (wk), 9 Ben Cutting, 10 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 11 James Muirhead.Despite the fact that several key batsmen fell cheaply in Hobart, changes would appear more likely in England’s attack than their top order. Danny Briggs was expensive and could be replaced by James Tredwell, while Jade Dernbach also leaked runs and could be under pressure from Ben Stokes.England (possible) 1 Michael Lumb, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Luke Wright, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad (capt), 10 Jade Dernbach/Ben Stokes, 11 James Tredwell.Pitch and conditionsThe MCG pitch should be good for batting and the forecast for Friday is clear with a top temperature of 29C.Stats and trivia Victory in Melbourne would push Australia up from eighth to sixth on the ICC rankings, meaning they would swap positions with England The former Australia fast bowler Paul Wilson will make his international debut as an on-field umpire in this matchQuotes”I don’t need to call on anything else other than experience to know exactly what I can do.”

Lahore secure resounding win

Group II

Multan‘s lower-order collapse on the final day, triggered by pacer Mohammad Saeed’s four-wicket haul, resulted in an eight-wicket rout at the hands of Lahore Shalimar, who brushed aside a 76-run target and moved to second place in Group II.Lahore Shalimar won the toss and chose to bowl, and were handed an immediate advantage when Mohammad Bilawal took seven wickets to dismiss Multan for 69.In spite of a shaky start, Lahore Shalimar grabbed a substantial first-innings lead, posting 282, built around Mohammad Saeed’s maiden first-class hundred. The No. 9 batsman scored 113 off 114 balls with 16 fours and four sixes. Offspinner Haziq Habibullah was the pick of the Multan bowlers, returning first-innings figures of 4 for 81.Faced with a 213-run deficit, and with a risk of an innings defeat at 117 for 4, Multan staged a recovery led by Ahmed Rasheed. Rasheed’s 170-ball 89 had 11 fours and contributions from Abdul Rehman Muzammil (47) and openers Usman Liaqat and Ahad Raza helped Multan clear the deficit. However, Mohammad Saeed struck with a four-wicket haul to skittle Multan out for 288 as the batting side lost its last six wickets for 38.The Lahore openers put on a 55-run stand in pursuit of the 76-run target and the side needed just 18 overs to complete an eight-wicket win. Mohammad Bilawal finished with match figures of 10 for 111, his maiden first-class ten-wicket haul, while Saeed added to his first-innings tally to finish with a seven-wicket match haul.A high-scoring match between Islamabad and Hyderabad petered out in a draw in Islamabad.Put in to bat first, Islamabad scored 303, helped by contributions from all batsmen, including a fifty from Moed Ahmed. Fast bowler Farhan Ayub picked up six wickets for 106, but regular partnerships between the Islamabad batsmen ensured they reached a solid score. In reply, Hyderabad, powered by fifties from openers Zeeshan Gul and Darya Khan eked out a slender 17-run lead. The openers added 113 for the opening stand to notch up important innings where other Hyderabad batsmen failed to convert their starts. Gul fell for 50, while Darya Khan missed his maiden first-class hundred by five runs. Hyderabad’s bowlers then gave their side a solid shot at victory, reducing Islamabad to 56 for 5 in the second innings, before a lower-order rally saw Islamabad climb to 200.Set a target of 184 runs, and running out of time, Hyderabad stuttered to 41 for 5 in 21 overs by close of play. Shehzad Azam, the Islamabad fast bowler, picked up 4 for 29 in 11 overs.

Group I

Abbottabad and Sialkot held each other to a high-scoring draw, which featured three centuries at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.Mohammad Ali (133) enjoyed a memorable debut as he rescued the home side from 38 for 2. Ali, whose innings included 19 fours and lasted just a shade under six hours, and 18-year-old Kamran Ghulam (157) carried Abbottabad to a daunting 513 for 7, before the declaration . Ghulam, though was the more aggressive of the two centurions, as his 23 fours helped him maintain a strike rate over 80. Another debutant, Baber Khan, came in at No. 9 and struck 54 off 55 balls. Hasan Ali, 19, was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 133.In reply, opener Majid Jahangir (107) and Naved Sarwar (80) stabilised Sialkot after quick wickets. A brief collapse in the middle order hurt Sialkot’s momentum but No. 8 Nabeel Malik arrested the slide – three wickets for 36 runs – with his second first-class fifty. The rest of the tail, however, could not muster similar resolve and Sialkot lost their last four wickets for 13 runs to finish at 360.Abbottabad’s second innings lasted for nine overs in which the openers hit 64 runs before the match was drawn. It was a case of first-innings blues as Rawalpindi met Peshawar in the Quaid-e-Azam tournament at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Both teams put in strong performances in their second innings, with Isarullah scoring the only century of the match, as it ended in a draw.Seamer Azam Khan snared four of the top-five Rawalpindi batsmen, including opener Shoaib Nasir, whose 38 remained the highest score of the innings. Azam’s new-ball partner Afaq Ahmed chipped in with three wickets as Rawalpindi benefited from lower-order contributions – the last four wickets added 117 runs – to reach 180.Peshawar’s steady start was interrupted when Ashfaq Ahmed was forced to retire with the score on 42. Iftikhar Ahmed’s 92 was the saving grace after the top-order could not consolidate on their starts. Striking 15 fours in his 107-ball innings, his counterattack helped Peshawar claim a 63-run lead, which proved vital in their claiming three points off this match.Rawalpindi’s solid start was dented when their first two wickets fell within four runs. The score was 99 for 2 and by the time they had added five more runs, another wicket had fallen. Regular wickets became the order of the day until Zahid Mansoor (91) and wicketkeeper Talha Qureshi (45*) steadied the innings, taking Rawalpindi from 186 for 6 to 278 before the partnership was broken. Qureshi remained unbeaten until the end of the innings, taking his side to 384.Azizullah, the 21-year-old fast bowler, toiled away for 42.4 overs and reaped good rewards as he claimed his maiden five-for in first-class cricket.Chasing a target of 322 runs, Isarullah’s ton helped Peshawar set a good pace as they made 181 for 2 in 51 overs, but in the end the honours were shared.

Allrounder Marizanne Kapp’s hat-trick spearheaded South Africa women’s second nine-wicket win in as many matches to secure the three-match T20 series against Bangladesh women in Potchesfroom.Bangladesh composed a slow start after winning the toss, requiring 12 overs to cross 50 but made sure they had nine wickets still in hand. Taking advantage of their foundation proved difficult though with Ayasha Rahman the top-scorer with 34, holing out at long off in the next over. Lata Mondal held firm at the other end, but Kapp returned for her final spell in the 19th over, which ended up as a triple-wicket maiden.No. 5 Rumana Ahmed top-edged to the keeper and both Ritu Moni and Fahima Khatun were bowled. All three fell without scoring and Bangladesh managed 84 for 6 in 20 oversThe chase proved straightforward with the openers Lizelle Lee and Trisha Chetty recording 71 runs in nine overs. Rumana got rid of Lee for 37, but by then the result was all but decided.”I enjoyed my bowling today,” said Kapp, “I stuck to my plans and that really paid off for me. I wasn’t really thinking about the hat-trick, my game plan was to bowl line and length and fortunately that plan came off.”Winning the series is a great way for us to start the season,” she added. “We haven’t played a lot of cricket together in the off-season so it was important for us to start this series off positively. Hopefully we can make it 3-0 tomorrow and move that momentum into the ODI series starting next week.”

Pietersen out of Champions Trophy

Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy and could face a race to be fit in time for the Ashes as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury

Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy and could face a race to be fit in time for the Ashes as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury. The ECB said on Wednesday that it expected Pietersen to resume full training in mid-June, less than four weeks before the first Test against Australia at Trent Bridge on July 10.Pietersen missed the third Test of England’s tour of New Zealand after suffering bruising to his right knee and it had already been announced that the batsman would not be considered for the return series, starting next month. Playing in the Champions Trophy was the next target but it has been deemed that he will not be ready for the tournament, which runs from June 6-23.An ECB statement read: “Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy following a repeat MRI scan on his right knee earlier today. The scan has shown some improvement in the bruising to the bone that occurred in the build up to the Test Series against New Zealand in February. However Pietersen will not have recovered sufficiently in time for the NatWest one-day series against New Zealand beginning May 31 and the Champions Trophy which follows. Pietersen will now start a graduated rehabilitation program with a view to resuming full training by the middle of June.”The news is not altogether unexpected, with England taking a cautious approach to managing Pietersen’s knee problem ahead of back-to-back Ashes series, and comes shortly after the announcement of Australia’s touring squad. Pietersen has been wearing a brace to aid his recovery, although there is currently no suggestion that surgery will be required. When he flew home from New Zealand, where he was injured in a warm-up match at Queenstown, a timeframe of eight weeks was given, forcing his withdrawal from the entire IPL. The two home Tests against New Zealand, beginning on May 16, would also have come too soon but his absence for the Champions Trophy is a blow to England’s hopes of winning a global 50-over competition for the first time.Should his recovery progress as the ECB hopes, Pietersen could play for Surrey in the Championship against Yorkshire starting on June 21. England then have a four-day game against Essex starting on June 30 to prepare for the Ashes although even that schedule would only leave him a maximum eight days of first-class cricket since the middle of March.Pietersen returned to England’s ODI team for the first time in almost a year against India in January after his temporary retirement from limited-overs internationals in 2012. England’s rotation policy meant Jonathan Trott was rested for that series, with Joe Root making an immediate impression in the middle order and when Pietersen sat out the ODIs in New Zealand, Root improved his record to 326 runs at 81.50.With Trott, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell all expected to bat at the top of the order, England will now be heavily reliant on Eoin Morgan to provide the sort of impetus that Pietersen is capable of in one-day cricket. The priority of retaining the Ashes, however, is clearly of greater concern.
