Jesse Ryder is among seven New Zealand international cricketers who have been included in a New Zealand XI squad to play the West Indians in a warm-up match at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval from November 27 to 29. The squad also includes New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, Dean Brownlie, Peter Fulton, Hamish Rutherford, Tom Latham and Todd Astle.Otago batsman Aaron Redmond and Jeet Raval, from Auckland, will open the batting for West Indies XI because the visitors are missing several players who are part of the ongoing tour of India.Ryder’s inclusion is significant because it has been only eight months since he was assaulted in Christchurch and hospitalised. He also served a six-month ban for failing a dope test.”This warm-up match will give our batsmen some critical match time as well as giving them a sighter of some of the West Indian bowlers,” General manager national selection Bruce Edgar said. “It will be great to see Jesse back in a New Zealand team environment but it’s simply another opportunity for him to show that he can perform consistently.”New Zealand will name their Test squad on November 25. The tour comprises three Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals.New Zealand XI: Brendon McCullum (capt), Todd Astle, James Baker , Dean Brownlie, Mark Craig, Peter Fulton, Tom Latham, Andrew Mathieson, Hamish Rutherford, Jesse Ryder, Anurag Verma

India notch third consecutive win

India’s third consecutive win in the Tri-nation Under-19 tournament against Australia reduced the hosts’ chances of making it to the finals

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jul-2013
ScorecardIndia’s third consecutive win in the Tri-nation Under-19 tournament against Australia reduced the hosts’ chances of making it to the finals. After the seven-wicket loss, Australia are placed second in the points table with four points, the same as New Zealand who still have a game in hand.In Darwin, Australia were put in to bat and openers Matthew Short and Tom Leaver put on 59 before Aamir Gani dismissed both of them. The next two batsmen fell in quick succession once Australia crossed 100 by when the run-rate had also been curbed. Jake Doran’s unbeaten 41 and a 25-ball 28 from No. 8 Cameron Valente took them to 191 for 6 and Gani finished with 3 for 25.India were hardly troubled in the chase. Akhil Herwadkar and Vijay Zol scored fifties and put on 107 for the second wicket, taking the team total to nearly 150, but both were dismissed in consecutive overs. Sanju Samson and Mohammad Saif scored the last 46 runs to take them home without much fuss.

Shane Shillingford took his good form from the Test series against Zimbabwe into the Regional Four Day Competition, taking 12 wicketsto set up a 216-run win for Windward Islands against Barbados. Shillingford, who took 19 wickets in two Tests at an average of 10.52, bowled well in both innings to help dismiss Barbados for 64 and 205. The win puts Windwards at the top of the points table with 48 points.Batting first, Windwards managed 184 in their first innings. Ashley Nurse and Sulieman Benn took four wickets each as Windwards crumbled after a strong start. In reply, Shillingford and medium pacers Nelon Pascal and Keon Peters dismissed Barbados for a paltry 64.Openers Devon Smith and Tyrone Theophile extended Windwards’ 120-run lead, with an opening stand of 170. While Theophile fell for 91, Smith smashed an unbeaten 150 as Windwards declared at 301 for 4, setting Barbados 422 runs for a win.Shillingford then spun out Barbados for 205, picking up eight wickets for 82 runs off 37 overs. Barbados opener Kraigg Braithwaite held on end up, scoring an unbeaten 91 off 266 balls but Shillingford’s dominance proved too much for Barbados.
ScorecardTrinidad & Tobago routed Combined Campuses and Colleges by 10 wickets in Port of Spain. Put into the bat, T&T were in trouble at 19 for 3 before a 117-run fourth-wicket stand between Jason Mohammed and captain Dwayne Bravo lifted them to safety. Mohammed anchored the T&T innings, stitching together partnerships of 80 runs and 104 runs with Kieron Pollard and Stephen Katwaroo respectively, and scored his second first-class hundred. T&T declared their innings at an imposing 406 for 9.CCC began their reply well and a 107-run partnership between captain Kyle Corbin and Raymon Riefer for the fourth wicket took them to a solid-looking 168 for 3. However, the innings went downhill after Corbin was dismissed for 62, with the score at 168 for 4. CCC lost their next six wickets to fast bowler Rayad Emrit for just 20 runs to be dismissed for 188.CCC were in danger of facing an innings defeat, tottering at 53 for 5 after T&T enforced the follow-on with a lead of 218 runs. Floyd Reifer and Chadwick Walton added 98 runs for the sixth wicket to lend some stability to the innings while a 72-run stand between Walton and McClean helped CCC edge past T&T’s lead. Another lower-order collapse – four wickets in five runs – ensured that T&T needed a mere 11 runs for a win. The T&T openers took two overs to reach the target and bring their side to second place on the points table, level with Jamaica.
ScorecardLeft-arm spinner Nikita Miller’s 11-wicket haul set up Jamaica’s 170-run win over Leeward Islands. Put in to bat, Jamaica were dismissed for 209 in their first innings. Leewards offspinner Justin Athanaze picked up four wickets , while Quinton Boatswain took 3 for 21 in nine overs. In reply, Leewards crumbled to 108 all out as Miller picked up seven wickets, conceding a miserly 13 runs in 20.2 overs. Jamaica struggled in their second innings and were 116 for 9 at one stage, before a 109-run tenth-wicket partnership between Odean Brown and Sheldon Cotterrell took them to 225. Brown scored his second first-class fifty before he was dismissed by Athanaze for 59.Leewards had a poor start in their chase of a steep target of 327 runs. Quick wickets from fast bowler Andrew Richardson and Cotterrell reduced them to 20 for 4. A 91-run partnership between captain Sylvester Joseph and Jahmar Hamilton restored some stability to the chase but Jamaica were on top after Leewards lost their next four wickets for just 11 runs. Miller dismissed Hamilton for 52 and took three more wickets to give Jamaica a convincing win.

Buchanan 'frosty' with New Zealand CEO

Perhaps unsurprisingly after the side has been rolled for 45 in a Test match, tensions remain apparent at the top of the New Zealand management structure with John Buchanan, the director of cricket, admitting to a difficult relationship with chief executive David White which stemmed from the controversial demotion from the captaincy of Ross Taylor.Buchanan, who joined New Zealand Cricket in April 2011, had not spoken to the media since Taylor was dumped as captain following the Sri Lanka tour and is not in South Africa. He has been monitoring events from Australia before heading back across the Tasman to resume his duties watching domestic cricket and scouting for talent.A host of former New Zealand players, led by the vocal Martin Crowe, have been severely critical of the change of captaincy and the way Taylor, who opted out of the South Africa tour, has been treated. Neither has Buchanan agreed with everything but is hopeful of improving the situation with White.”It can be frosty at times, but he’s got a job to do, as I have,” Buchanan told the . “We certainly don’t always meet eye-to-eye, there’s no doubt about that. But I am very confident he gives me every possible support he can and takes my views and represents them quite candidly to the board.”He also said his relationship with the coach Mike Hesson had “received a bit of a road bump” due to events in Sri Lanka but he has spoken to Hesson since the defeat in Newlands to offer his support”I’ve always let it be know to Mike that I’m available,” he said. “I’m not one that really wants to spend every moment ringing or intruding into the coach’s domain. Having been a coach myself, I know there are good times, and there are times when you need to talk to people.”Buchanan retains the belief that there are players available to turn New Zealand’s fortunes around and that he does not have any second thoughts about his job.”It’s a a fantastic role,” he said. “That’s why I took on the job and I still say that. I still maintain the opportunities in New Zealand Cricket are immense, in terms of what could be achieved in a short period of time – provided we all get on the same page.”

Clarke deepens Lancs anxiety

Scorecard
Rikki Clarke scored 140 to put Warwickshire in command•Getty Images

Rikki Clarke often responds to questions about his “unfulfilled talent” with a roll of the eyes and the deadest of verbal bats. All the same, when the Warwickshire all-rounder bats as fluently as he did in making 140 against Lancashire on the third day at Liverpool, it is inevitable that good judges will speculate about what he might have achieved with a little more consistency and, perhaps, a little more application.Clarke’s innings could not have been better timed, and neither could many of his shots. He joined Darren Maddy seven overs into the day’s play with his side on 81 for seven, still needing 19 runs to avoid being asked to follow-on. Smoothly shrugging off the prospect of such an indignity by lifting Simon Kerrigan for the first of his three sixes, Clarke then proceeded to change the character and tempo of the contest. The former Surrey and Derbyshire batsman shared an eighth-wicket partnership of 224 runs with the admirable Maddy, whose 112 was his first championship century for nearly four years. Their stand fell just four runs of the county’s all-time eighth-wicket record set by Bob Wyatt and Alf Croom against Worcestershire in 1925. More significantly, it meant that instead of conceding a substantial first-innings deficit, Warwickshire were able to take a 79-run lead into the second half of this fluctuating game.By the close of play Lancashire were only 35 runs behind but they had lost four choice wickets, three of them to the new ball. Stephen Moore, who has yet to pass 20 in eight first-class innings this year; Paul Horton, who gloved a lifting delivery to Tim Ambrose; and Karl Brown were all claimed by the impressive left-arm seamer Keith Barker. Then, immediately after being dropped by Clarke off Barker, Steven Croft very unwisely slog-swept Jeetan Patel to Neil Carter at deep square leg to complete Lancashire’s miserable day. Warwickshire will go into the fourth morning with buoyant expectations that they can clinch a remarkable victory.Indeed, the only good news for Lancashire supporters on Saturday arrived around teatime when Old Trafford officials confirmed that Junaid Khan has been given permission to play for them in both t20 and championship games this season. The Pakistani fast bowler is expected to arrive at Old Trafford in June.By then we will have a better idea of whether Lancashire are in anything like decent shape to defend their title. The evidence of the first two games is not especially encouraging for them.Yet it is key to an understanding of the Maddy-Clarke partnership that Lancashire did not bowl poorly on the third afternoon and nor did the Liverpool pitch wicket flatten out. The ball continued to pass the bat but the Warwickshire pair responded to any small defeats with phlegmatic temperaments and sound, albeit contrasting, techniques. At first Clarke was intent on taking the initiative away from a Lancashire attack which had been buoyed by Kerrigan claiming the wickets of Chris Wright and Tim Ambrose in the first seven overs of the day. On the ground where he took a record-equalling seven catches in an innings last August, Clarke took the attack to Lancashire with a display of controlled hitting which never veered into mere slogging. He chose the balls to hit wisely and he timed his strokes pleasingly well. After reaching his half century off 49 balls, he took a more sedate 89 deliveries to reach three figures. At the other end, Maddy ground his way to an equally vital century off 176 balls, an effort that was all the more praiseworthy given that he had been hit on the hand by Chapple early in the first session. It all made for good watching for the Warwickshire supporters, some of whom had draped a St George’s flag across one of the stands at Aigburth. In one corner of the patriotic symbol was a bear and ragged staff; but across the middle were written the words ‘One Rikki Clarke.’ By Saturday evening, everyone could see what the fuss was about.

South Africa T20s may not be televised, says ZC

South Africa’s five T20s against Zimbabwe in Harare in June may not be televised as Zimbabwe Cricket is unlikely to be able to afford the costs involved

Firdose Moonda17-Apr-2012South Africa’s five T20s against Zimbabwe in Harare in June may not be televised as Zimbabwe Cricket is unlikely to be able to afford the costs involved. The matches will be played between June 20 and 24, in accordance with South Africa’s request earlier this year. The tour is an addition to the Zimbabwe board’s planned budget, which will impact on its ability to provide television coverage.”It will cost us a lot of money to get a broadcast deal and because this was not part of our initial plans, we have not budgeted for it,” Ozias Bvute, managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket, told ESPNcricinfo. “But South Africa are our neighbours and they requested this from us, so we will host the matches. As long as it is cost neutral, we can make it happen.” So far, the only costs Zimbabwe Cricket will incur are the South Africa team’s hotel expenses.Zimbabwe’s board is on a tight budget and made a loss on all three incoming tours hosted during the 2011-12 season. It remains committed to seeking out more competition as part of the plan to re-establish the team at Test level and will likely also host an A tour later in the winter. The five T20s will not be recognised as internationals but have instead been given practice match status because the visit is not part of the Future Tours Programme. They were organised on special request after Gary Kirsten, South Africa’s coach, asked to play more 20-over fixtures before the World Twenty20 in September. All five fixtures will be played in the afternoon to “accommodate the shorter daylight hours”, according to Zimbabwe Cricket.South Africa will arrive in Harare on June 18 and play one practice game before the back-to-back engagements start on June 20. South Africa have not been to Zimbabwe since August 2007, for an ODI series, and are not scheduled to play Tests against their neighbours until 2014, although they have sent various A teams to play first-class matches and in tri-series, as well as hosted Zimbabwe in 2010.The South Africa visit will mark the end of a five-month break for Zimbabwe, who last played in early February on their tour of New Zealand. Zimbabwe do not have any international engagements over the winter but are due to host Bangladesh in the 2012-13 season.South Africa and Zimbabwe are in the same group for the World T20, which also includes Sri Lanka. South Africa have not won an ICC trophy since 1998 and Kirsten has been tasked with changing that.
