McDonald ducks then dives to 163

After being frightened by a duck and overlooked for Australia’s one-day side, Andrew McDonald took out his frustration on Western Australia with a brutal 163 off 116 balls that drove Victoria to 529. Darren Pattinson made sure the locals struggled in their reply, taking all four wickets as the hosts reached 108, but the day belonged to McDonald.McDonald and Aaron Finch, who put on 219 at 6.5 an over, also had an eventful time before the match started. They were walking in the morning when they went too close to some ducklings and upset the drake. “He got on top of my backpack and started chipping away at my head,” McDonald said after his century. “It was a savage attack, so lucky to survive. I never knew they could be so feisty.”The Western Australians were soon experiencing a similarly frenzied attack as McDonald, who was 9 overnight, blasted 21 fours and seven sixes in an innings that lasted a touch over two hours. On Sunday John Hastings, the Victorian allrounder, was called up to the one-day team, a spot held by McDonald in India last year.McDonald still has a Cricket Australia contract and the decision makers will be impressed when they learn he jumped from 50 to 150 in 49 deliveries. Finch was also in good form on the way to 84 before Ryan Duffield picked up both batsmen.Duffield finished with 3 for 92 on debut while Michael Beer, the other first-gamer, gained 3 for 109 as the Victorian tail went quickly. Pattinson removed Liam Davis early and then returned late in the day to knock over Michael Swart (21), Adam Voges (0) and Wes Robinson (38). His 4 for 18 came off 12 overs, while Peter Siddle gave up 45 runs in 8.2 overs on his first-class comeback.

Essex batsman Ravi Bopara gave a timely reminder to the England selectors by scoring a fine century against leaders Yorkshire on the opening day of the County Championship clash at Chelmsford. With the opening Test against Pakistan just over a week away, the 25-year-old right-hander posted 142 to press his claims for a recall now that Ian Bell is sidelined through injury.Bopara took full advantage of a friendly pitch to stamp his authority on the opening day’s play as Essex reached the close on 353 for 6. He never looked in the slightest trouble in completing his first Championship hundred of the season, having struck half-centuries in his previous two outings. It contained 13 fours and he went on to collect another six before a mistimed hook against paceman Tino Best ended up in the hands of Adil Rashid at square leg. While Bopara was enjoying himself, Alastair Cook failed to capitalise on the conditions. After looking at ease whilst collecting five fours in moving to 44, the England opener was the architect of his own downfall when he slashed a wide delivery from Steve Patterson to provide wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy with an easy catch. Cook’s dismissal came in the over following the departure of Jaik Mickleburgh, who contributed 38 out of an opening stand of 97 before he was bowled by leg-spinner Rashid. When Tom Westley fell leg before to Patterson it meant Essex had lost three wickets in seven overs while moving to 120 at lunch. But Bopara and Matt Walker were to retrieve the situation by adding 80 in 29 overs before the latter was well caught low down at deep mid-wicket by Jonathan Bairstow for 26 to give Rashid another success. But Walker’s exit only signalled the arrival of James Foster to join Bopara in the most lucrative partnership of the day. They warmed to their task by adding 124 in 26 overs, of which Foster made 61, before Oliver Hannon-Dalby had him caught at deep square-leg by Patterson with the second new ball.Bopara was to depart soon afterwards, a few minutes before the close, leaving Grant Flower and Tim Phillips to drop anchor and survive to carry their partnership into the second day. Yorkshire used six bowlers in their toiling attempts to make progress, the most successful being Rashid and Patterson who have so far picked up two wickets each for 74 and 72 respectfully.

Faz parte do futebol. Sempre vai querer ganhar, como nós queríamos. Mas sinto confiança no grupo. Estamos conscientes de que temos de colocar o São Paulo no lugar mais alto possível. Precisamos trabalhar – opinou Cueva.

AVFC not interested in Suarez transfer

With deals for Lucas Digne, Philippe Coutinho and Robin Olsen completed so far in this current January transfer window, Aston Villa have not been reluctant in bringing new players in to help strengthen Steven Gerrard’s side.

However, it seems as though one reported transfer target may not be making the move to Villa Park anytime soon.

What’s the latest?

According to Sky Sports (via Birmingham Live), despite recent reports from elsewhere suggesting otherwise, Villa are apparently not interested in signing Atletico Madrid and former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

In 682 club appearances throughout his career, the 34-year-old has managed to rack up an impressive 433 goals and 240 assists, proving himself as one of the deadliest strikers over the past few years.

A big mistake for Lange

During his time at Liverpool where he played 95 games alongside Gerrard, Suarez made a total of 113 appearances across all competitions, scoring 82 goals and providing 47 assists along the way, showing the sort of Premier League experience that he’d be able to offer this Villa side as well as a winning mentality having taken home numerous trophies in his career.

Taking into account what Suarez would be able to offer Villa on and off the pitch under Gerrard’s management, it could be a real mistake for Johan Lange if he refuses to work out a deal to bring the Uruguay international back to the Premier League with the Midlands club.

Even though he would become Villa’s second-oldest player below Ashley Young if he were to join either this month or in the next summer transfer window when his current contract at Atletico runs out, it could well be worth the risk if Gerrard can get the best from him, scoring goals for Villa on a regular basis as he did during his Liverpool days.

If by the time the summer transfer window opens and Villa aren’t satisfied with having just Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings as their senior strike options, they should definitely reconsider their current apparent stance on Suarez and see if he would be willing to make a return to the Premier League under his former teammate.

Everton: Fans react to Lucas Digne report

Chelsea are considering a loan move for Everton’s Lucas Digne during the January transfer window, The Telegraph’s Matt Law reports.

The reigning European champions are assessing potential cover options with Ben Chilwell potentially out for the rest of the season.

Digne has fallen out of favour at Everton after a row with manager Rafael Benitez in front of his team-mates.

He hasn’t played a minute of football for The Toffees since 1 December, though he was named amongst the substitutes for Sunday’s game against Brighton.

Everton have already signed a likely replacement for the Frenchman in the form of 22-year-old Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Why might Everton fans be opposed to a straight loan?

According to Transfermarkt, Digne is the third most valuable player in the squad, behind only Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

Everton fans, then, may prefer their club to cash in and reinvest if he’s not part going to be part of Rafael Benitez’s plans going forward.

Supporters were furious when it emerged last week the club had placed a £25m price tag on the defender – below his Transfermarkt value – and they certainly aren’t any happier with the added news that a loan is now on the agenda.

Fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed Law’s report, and here’s what the Goodison faithful had to say.

Celtic urged to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers

Celtic have been urged to make Cameron Carter-Vickers’ loan deal a permanent switch in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with Football Insider, Frank McAvennie stated his belief that Ange Postecoglou must make the Tottenham Hotspur loanee’s move a permanent deal this winter, following the news that the Bhoys can land the centre-back for just £3m.

Indeed, previous reports had suggested that it would take around £10m in order for Celtic to sign the USA international, however, after Spurs insider John Wenham revealed that the price for the 23-year-old is actually just £3m, the initial reports would appear to be wide of the mark.

Speaking about the defender, McAvennie said: “[Carl] Starfelt wasn’t quite at it against Hibs. For me, he was a bit sloppy. He was letting his man get past him far too easily. You could see that for the goal Hibs scored.

“Carter-Vickers on the other hand was brilliant. I’m starting to really like him. He’s been really solid in recent weeks. For me, he’s been the one who has played a big role in improving that defence.

“Joe Hart also has to take massive credit for that but Carter-Vickers has been playing every game for a reason. If it’s only going to cost £3m I would get that done in January, pay the money. Then he’s ours and we don’t need to worry about it.”

Forget Jullien

Considering just how impressive Carter-Vickers has been since his arrival at Parkhead this summer, it would indeed appear wise for Postecoglou to do all he can to make the centre-back’s temporary switch a permanent move next month, as McAvennie suggests.

Indeed, over his 14 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £1.8m-rated defender has helped his side keep seven clean sheets, scored two goals and registered one assist, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 0.6 tackles, 82.9 passes and winning 72% of his duels per game.

These returns have seen the £20k-per-week man average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.48, ranking him as the fourth-best performer in the top flight of Scottish football this term.

As such, considering the fact that Christopher Jullien appears to still be some way off making a return to first-team football as a result of his ongoing knee injury, sealing a deal for Carter-Vickers this winter would indeed appear to be a very wise move for Postecoglou, as it would not be surprising if, following his remarkable campaign with Celtic thus far, a number of bigger sides begin plotting a swoop for the 23-year-old next summer.

Newcastle transfer news on Kelly

Craig Hope has now dropped an insider claim on reported Newcastle United transfer target Lloyd Kelly.

The Lowdown: Kelly targeted

It has already been widely reported that the St. James’ Park faithful are interested in a move for Kelly in the January transfer window.

With Kieran Trippier being officially announced by the club on Friday morning, it now looks as if the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium will concentrate on strengthening their defence further, given their poor defensive record in the Premier League so far this season.

The reliable Mark Douglas has confirmed the Magpies want a centre-back and a striker after the capture of Trippier.

The Latest: Kelly latest

As per The Daily Mail’s Hope, it ‘sounds like’ it could now be ‘difficult’ for the North East club to do a deal for Kelly this month, as Bournemouth are reluctant to sell him while they are going for promotion.

Eddie Howe ‘likes’ the player, but it looks like he may now have to look elsewhere for other targets.

The Verdict: Shame

It would certainly be a shame if the Tyneside outfit miss out on signing Kelly.

Of course, he is a player that Howe knows well, having signed him for the Cherries while he was the manager there, and he then went on to play nine games under him in an injury-hit campaign.

Nonetheless, Howe would know how to get the best out of him, and his ability to play anywhere across the backline would have been a real asset to have, adding depth in multiple positions.

However, it looks like the new owners will now have to look at other targets in what promises to be a very busy next few weeks ahead.

Liverpool given Adama Traore transfer boost

Liverpool have been boosted in their reported attempts to sign Adama Traore, with the Wolves winger apparently available for just £18m in January.

The Lowdown: Liverpool linked with Traore

The Reds could potentially be looking to sign a new wide attacking player in the next transfer window due to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Liverpool duo will be absent during an important part of the season and Jurgen Klopp will know that an extra attacking player wouldn’t go amiss.

Traore has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks and it is a rumour which isn’t going away.

The Latest: Reds given fresh boost

According to Football Insider, a Wolves source has indicated that the Midlands club are willing to cut their asking price for the Spaniard by a whopping 64% from £50m in July to a mere £18m now.

Liverpool are claimed to be on ‘red alert’ following this revelation, having initially been put off by the amount that Wanderers demanded for Traore’s services during the summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-13/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Is he worth it?

On his day, Traore is a fascinating player to watch, with his incredible pace and dribbling ability genuinely making him unplayable at times.

There are huge doubts over his all-round worth as a footballer, though, with the Spain international not yet registering a goal or an assist in 12 Premier League appearances this season. He has duly lost his place in Bruno Lage’s starting line-up in recent weeks.

Jurgen Klopp may believe that he can polish Traore as a player and make him more complete, but the 25-year-old would need to improve greatly in his end product to make the grade at Anfield, just as his one-time team-mate Diogo Jota has done.

For £18m, it could be worth taking a punt on him, but it seems just as likely that Michael Edwards may be eyeing up cheaper, more effective alternatives, even with Wolves drastically slashing their valuation of the Spain international.

Anderson almost missed one-dayers

James Anderson, who took a career-best 5 for 23 at Port Elizabeth to give England a 2-1 lead in the one-day series, was on the verge of being withdrawn from the five-match contest against South Africa after concerns grew over his troublesome knee.Anderson had been battling the injury since the start of the tour and it reached a stage where the team management were considering resting their key strike bowler to preserve him for the Test series. However, coach Andy Flower said they took a gamble to play him at Centurion Park and since then the knee has responded well.”We were worried at one stage; we thought of pulling him from the one-day series completely,” Flower said. “We took a little bit of a gamble to play him in the first match at Centurion. Some of the [medical] advice was not to play him. But we thought we’d better play him to see how his knee reacts to a 10-over spell and 50 overs in the field.”He was very surprised by how well he came through it, and so were the medical people – and now it’s getting better every day.”Anderson’s main problem now is actually a damaged toe which he hurt when stubbing his foot on a chair before the fourth ODI. He needed a local anaesthetic to get through the match but, even though it could be broken, he is not in doubt for the final match at Durban.”He’ll be fine,” Flower said. “The doctor’s had a look at it and he’s not even going to x-ray it – because he says, ‘Look, if it’s got a crack in it there’s nothing much we can do anyway’.”Flower is also confident that his latest recruit to England’s backroom staff, Graham Gooch, will slot in well with the touring party when he joins up for a short period around the first Test to act as a batting coach. It is a role Flower used to undertake before taking over the head coach’s position and he has a close relationship with Gooch following their time together at Essex.”I’ve got the utmost respect for him. He will bring a lot of experience, a lot of expertise, competitive spirit and patriotism,” he said. “He’ll be a great guy to have around. But he’s quite a busy guy with other commitments, and I don’t think we could get him full time.”
