Chelsea Could Sign ‘Magnificent’ £43m Star To Replace Havertz

Chelsea are reportedly interested in Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Rayan Cherki, as Mauricio Pochettino gets to work on crafting his side ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Blues will be eager to right their wrongs after a disastrous season, seeing them finish 12th and gaining just 11 wins all term in a shocking year for the club.

Despite spending around £600m on new signings across last year’s transfer windows, Pochettino is expected to have a busy summer in order to get his team to his liking, with the latest talent linked to Stamford Bridge posing as a less expensive upgrade.

What’s the latest on Rayan Cherki to Chelsea?

As reported by journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea hold an interest in Lyon’s teen sensation Cherki who is contracted to the French side until 2025.

After penning a new deal in April, the 19-year-old is highly valued by Les Gones however could depart this summer with the Blues “exploring” the idea of signing the midfielder.

That said, they may well have to pay Lyon's £43m asking price in order to conclude a deal.

What could Rayan Cherki offer to Chelsea?

Having just sold Kai Havertz to Arsenal, the west Londoners could identify a worthy replacement for the German in Cherki, who has similar attributes to the 24-year-old.

Hailed as being a “magnificent talent” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the teenager has been influential to Lyon’s Ligue 1 campaign, recording 34 appearances in the French top division last season.

Scoring four goals and contributing six assists, via Sofascore, the Frenchman cemented himself as being one of his side’s best creative outlets, as highlighted by his average of making two key passes per game. That happens to be a great deal better than Havertz who could only manage 1.1 in the Premier League last term.

Having abilities in the final third in both creating and finishing suggest that the teenager could be a perfect replacement for the German, who added an encouraging outlet for the Blues in a poor season.

Ending the term as Chelsea’s top scorer in the league with seven goals, the 24-year-old leaves a gap requiring replenishment this summer, with Cherki displaying similar strengths to the versatile attacker.

Olympique Lyonnais'RayanCherkiin action with Paris St Germain's Nuno Mendes

Similarly to Havertz, the 19-year-old has the ability to be deployed in most areas across the attacking line, however, boasts a superior range of talent in progressive play, operating behind the striker.

When comparing the two players based on their statistics over their respective 2022/23 campaigns via FBref, it’s clear to see the added threat Cherki could offer to Pochettino in Havertz’s place.

Averaging 52.60 attempted passes per 90 to the German’s 31.32, the Lyon ace flexes an innate passing ability and desire to be on the ball, as highlighted by his 0.35 xAG (expected assists) per 90 to Havertz’s 0.13.

Chelsea lacked significantly in front of goal last season, as explained by their 38 goals scored in 38 games, which are fortunes that could be changed by introducing a maestro of progressive play to Pochettino’s attack.

As per FBref, Cherki could install a greater threat than the likes of Havertz in his eye to move towards the final third, averaging a monstrous 6.39 progressive carries per 90 to the Arsenal new recruit’s 2.07 per 90.

A similar pattern is evident in his rate of progressive passes, averaging 6.92 per 90 to the Aachen born gem’s 3.12, suggesting the ways he could rejuvenate the future attack at Stamford Bridge.

It’s integral that Pochettino gets Chelsea firing again, which is something he could do by introducing a creative bomb as effective as Cherki.

Leeds Will Fight For "Commanding" £11m-rated Wober Partner

Leeds United could finally be set to begin their summer spending on the first team, with defensive additions an unsurprising priority…

Who are Leeds United signing?

With Daniel Farke now installed as manager, there should be little standing in the way of the Whites' impending revolution.

The hope will be that their new German boss can make the necessary changes to turn them into a force capable of dominating the Championship at the first time of asking, having just been relegated from the top flight.

Putting aside the addition of Lewis Pirie as one for the future, a report from German outlet Bild now suggest that the Yorkshire outfit are set to battle for the signature of Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel as their first big acquisition of this new regime.

With the 26-year-old having seen little game time for the Bavarian giants, it seems he is now set to take his career into his own hands and stake his claim as a number one elsewhere. Football Transfers value the German at just €13m (£11m).

Who is Alexander Nubel?

As a product of the SC Paderborn academy, eventually making his mark at Schalke 04, Bayern were willing recipients of the shot-stopper who joined them on a free transfer in 2020.

However, since moving he has seen his career stagnate somewhat, having been moved into a supplementary role behind the legendary Manuel Neuer, and since forced out on loan. He has played just four times for the club, and most recently spent a two-year loan at AS Monaco.

It is this stint in France that has put him in the shop window though, given his strong performances that have unsurprisingly garnered interest.

Most recently, Nubel would maintain a 6.93 average rating in Ligue 1, which was a figure buoyed by the staggering 3.7 saves he would make per game, keeping nine clean sheets in the process, via Sofascore. Despite a lack of play time before this loan, he has shown little signs of rust.

max-wober-leeds-united

European football expert Kevin Hatchard sought to detail exactly what made the keeper such a unique asset back in 2019, which is sure to have only improved with this experience. He told talkSPORT: "He is the captain of Schalke and a goalkeeper in his early 20s. He is a very good goalkeeper with a [Manuel] Neuer vibe about him. He’s good with his feet, commanding, and he’s got a bit of arrogance about him which I don’t think is a terrible thing."

To pair this erratic but ultimately solid star with Leeds' sole defensive shining light in Wober, Farke could immediately form the foundations of a new-look backline that could put aside their defensive frailties of recent years.

Last campaign in the Premier League saw the Whites ship 78 goals, the most in the division.

However, having joined the club in January, the Austria international proved himself to be more than capable of holding his own at this level.

He maintained a 6.84 average Sofascore rating in the league, with his defensive statistics feeding into such an admirable figure for a side that fell to the drop. He would record 1.7 interceptions, 1.6 tackles and four clearances per game, with his rating actually making him the third-best performer within the squad, of those who featured more than five times, via Sofascore.

His solidity would complement well with the unpredictable nature of Nubel, whilst it is this instinctive play style that likely caught the eye of Bayern, and has allowed him to impress in Monaco.

He could answer Farke's prayers towards finally shoring up Leeds' notoriously leaky defence.

Derby: Rams Set To Wrap Up Charlie Lindsay Transfer

Derby County are set to complete another piece of transfer business soon, with The Derby Telegraph reporting that a deal is nearly sorted to snap up Charlie Lindsay on a free transfer.

Who is Charlie Lindsay?

The 19-year-old is currently without a club, having been let go by his previous club Rangers. The youngster never made his debut for the Scottish Premiership outfit and instead spent the entirety of his time with the team playing for their B-Squad in the Lowland League and in various cup competitions. He initially caught the eye with Glentoran's Under-17 squad, which prompted the Gers to bring him to their own youth setup. Initially getting minutes for their Under-18 outfit, he then moved up to Rangers B, but has been let go after just two seasons with them.

During his stint playing for the Gers, he did manage to impress in reserve team action. The attacking midfielder played in the Trust Trophy and UEFA Youth League for the Scottish outfit without ever really making an impact – he played 13 times and scored twice – but it was his 2022/23 season in the Lowland League that stands out. Becoming a regular there, he played 33 times and rewarded the Gers B team with 12 goals and six assists along the way. Despite that impressive record though, the midfielder was released at the end of the campaign.

Are Derby County signing Charlie Lindsay?

On a hunt for a new club, it now looks as if he may have found one. According to a report from The Derby Telegraph, Derby are ready to snap him up on a permanent transfer having tried him on a trial basis. He'd been tracked by several other EFL outfits too, with Hull, Blackburn and Huddersfield all monitoring his situation, but it looks as if he will now head to Pride Park.

The League One outfit must have liked what they saw from the 19-year-old and having now impressed during his spell there, he has earnt a place in the Rams' academy.

Lindsay, who appears to be one for the future, offers Derby some versatility should they need to call upon him. He can play as both a central midfielder but also further forward in an attacking midfield role too. He seems to excel in both positions, with the youngster managing more assists when further back but more goals when he is given the chance to roam forward. If needed, he has also been utilised on either wing in the past too.

The 19-year-old talent also has some experience at international level, albeit not a first-team cap. He has played four times for the Northern Ireland Under-16 squad and bagged two goals in four games for them. Despite a solid record with that youth outfit, he has since gone unpicked though for Under-17, 18 and 19 teams. Some more coaching and reserve gametime with Derby though could lead to more caps – and could perhaps lead in the future to some first-team football for the Rams and his country.

Man Utd v Wolves: predictions, preview & more

The final game of the opening weekend of the 2023/24 Premier League season will see Manchester United host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford in a Monday night game under the lights.

It’s set to be a busy summer transfer window for Erik Ten Haag, and Old Trafford will be expecting a new-look United side to line up to get the season underway.

Here is Football FanCast's preview ahead of the return to action…

When is the match and is it on TV?

Man Utd take on Wolves on the 14th of August and is slated for an 8pm kick-off in Manchester.

Although television contracts and deals have yet to be confirmed ahead of the new season, especially with the arrival of TNT Sports (replacing BT Sports), it is likely Sky Sports will have the rights to broadcast this fixture as their first Monday Night Football (MNF) billing of the season.

Who is Manchester United’s key player?

Erik ten Hag and Marcus Rashford

There are certainly a number of players to choose from.

Bruno Fernandes enjoyed a superb season in Erik Ten Haag’s debut campaign. 2022 summer signing Lisandro Martinez is also a crucial part of the team and is arguably the most important piece of the back four.

United’s key man, however, is Marcus Rashford. The forward enjoyed his best season for United in 22/23, netting 17 times and providing five assists. He will be crucial heading into the new season.

Who is Wolves’ key player?

Wolves look set to lose a number of key players in this summer transfer window. The club are shackled by Financial Fair Play rules, and thus have to sell before they can buy. They recently lost star player Ruben Neves to the Saudi Pro League, for example.

Jose Sa in goal looks set to be one of, if not their most important player. The Portuguese international made over 100 saves for Wolves last season, keeping 11 clean sheets.

How will Man Utd line up?

Erik ten Hag

It’s early in the summer window, so it’s hard to pick the exact starting XI for Ten Haag’s United, but with the takeover saga dragging on it has proved a distraction to this transfer window’s recruitment. Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana has been linked with a move to Old Trafford along with Chelsea star Mason Mount. Here’s our prediction:

Onana; Dalot, Martinez, Varane, Shaw; Casemiro, Mount; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial

How will Wolves line up?

Wolves boss Juluen Lopetegui

It’s more about who Wolves can hold onto in this window rather than who they are going to sign, so don’t expect too many changes from the regular team of last season.

Wolves have been linked with moves for Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho and free-kick specialist James Ward-Prowse from Southampton. If they completed these signings, expect them to start straight away on the opening weekend at Old Trafford. :

Sa; Semedo, Kilman, Collins, Dawson, Jonny; Cravalho, Lemina, Ward-Prowse, Neto; Sarabia

What were the last 5 league meetings between the two teams?

The sides have met 18 times in the English Premier League, with United winning 11 of those games. There has been three draws in the fixture, with Wolves winning on four occasions.

It’s a fixture that doesn’t typically produce a lot of goals, but one that United have dominated in recent years:

May 2023: Man Utd 2-0 Wolves December 2022: Wolves 0-1 Man Utd January 2022: Wolves 1-0 Man Utd August 2021: Wolves 0-1 Man Utd May 2021: Wolves 1-2 Man Utd

Every Premier League Opening Day Fixture

Who is going to win?

Man United's Bruno Fernandes

It’s hard to pick against United on the opening weekend of the season under the lights at Old Trafford. So here, we’re not going to. United should stroll to victory in the final game of the opening gameweek of the new season.

Northamptonshire and Worcestershire played out a thrilling tie at Wantage Road in the Royal London Cup with Adam Rossington narrowly failing to score the 14 runs required from the final over.Rossington paddle-swept two boundaries off Joe Leach to leave two required from the final delivery, but he couldn’t connect with the last ball and Leach’s full delivery escaped wicketkeeper Ben Cox for a bye that tied the scores and left each side with a point each from a wonderful game in bitterly cold conditions.Northants were in control of their chase of 278 with Rob Newton making a maiden List A century in 109 balls – opening the batting in one-day cricket for the first time since 2013. He shared a stand of 106 with Alex Wakely to steer Northants to 198 for 3 in the 39th over. But Newton dragged a lofted drive to long-on, Wakely was run out attempting a sharp single to short third man and Steven Crook edged a cut to Cox for a golden duck as Northants slid to 219 for 6.Rossington only had the bowlers for company but cut and drove with his usual excellent timing to keep Northants in touch. Thirty-nine runs were needed from 30 balls before Rossington pulled and then drove Leach for boundaries but couldn’t find a big over to take complete control of the situation. When only five runs came from the penultimate over, 14 were needed from the final six deliveries and Rossington couldn’t quite deliver, ending 63 not out from 45 balls.Newton’s innings looked to have handed Northants a much-needed victory, after losing their opening two matches in the competition. He drove and cut well in an opening stand of 55 with Josh Cobb before Cobb, having lifted Leach almost onto the upper tier of the Spencer Pavilion, dragged Jack Shantry into his stumps. Richard Levi then pulled Ed Barnard with perfect timing straight to deep square and when Rob Keogh tamely chipped a return catch back to Brett D’Oliveria Northants were in a sticky spot at 92 for 3. Newton and Wakely’s subsequent fine recovery was almost wasted.Worcestershire needed two recoveries of their own to post 277 for 9. From 118 for 5 after Daryl Mitchell made a season’s best 75, Cox made his List A best score. Dropped on 5 by Sanderson running around from long-on, he made a second successful attempt at the stroke and lifted Cobb for six. Another lofted drive cleared mid-off and he cut another boundary to take 17 from Cobb’s sixth over and drove some momentum back into the innings. He went past fifty for the first time in List A cricket in 54 balls with three fours and two sixes – the second over long-on off White. When he fell – caught at third man attempting to paddle sweep Richard Gleeson – Worcestershire were 199 for 8 and in danger of being bowled out well inside the allocation. But Barnard played a gem of an innings from No. 10 to rally the innings for a second time. He struck the ball cleanly down the ground, taking Azharullah for four, then six in an unbeaten 42 from 27 balls. It proved a decisive knock.Northants centurion Rob Newton said: “We feel we’ve outplayed them for 85 overs and a couple of patches have let us down in a big way. We should have nailed them for 230 or 240 and looking back we probably didn’t mix up the bowling enough against the final partnership.”We felt with 12 overs to go that was the time to nail the chase, I unfortunately got out, Alex went when he was just getting into his stride and that put us on the back foot. Adam played an unbelievable knock to almost get us over the line but we feel this is a game we should have won.”Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes said: “It’s been a really exciting enthralling game, just a shame the weather prevented too many coming along.”We did really we to get the score we did, we thought we were a little above par and at one stage Northants should have won comfortably but we kept going and managed to take something from the game and maintained our unbeaten record.”

Man United Eyeing "Sensational" Move For £60m Forward

Manchester United have reportedly offered Atalanta at least three players in part exchange for Rasmus Hojlund in a “sensational” swap move.

Are Man United signing Rasmus Hojlund?

Hojlund has been linked with a move to the Premier League for a number of months now, and it has been reported that Erik ten Hag has had multiple video calls with the Denmark international over a transfer.

A new forward appears to be required ahead of Ten Hag’s second season in charge, with Anthony Martial the only senior centre-forward on the books at this moment in time. The Frenchman is reportedly one of 13 players who could leave Man United this summer, though, further highlighting the need for a new number nine.

Football Insider shared an update regarding Man United and Hojlund in the last 48 hours, claiming the Red Devils have proposed a “sensational” new swap move. It is believed that the club have offered the Serie A side at least three players in a part-exchange player-plus cash move, but Atalanta are holding out for a cash-only deal.

The report says that Hojlund has already agreed on personal terms and wants to make the move to Old Trafford. Atalanta value their player at £60m, with negotiations set to continue as United have made a new forward their next top priority after Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund

How good is Rasmus Hojlund?

Hojlund contributed to 14 goals in 34 games for Atalanta last season, resulting in his Transfermarkt valuation increasing to a career-high €45m.

Still just 20 years of age, the forward ranks in the top 1% of forwards for progressive passes received and long pass completion and the top 16% for non-penalty expected goals, as per FBref, showing he can get into good areas, has an eye for a pass and knows where the back of the net is.

Former boss Christian Ilzer praised the forward’s "incredible maturity" and the fact that he is believed to be "similar to Erling Haaland", whereas Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini hailed Hojlund, picking up on the forward’s pace and describing his technical quality as “remarkable”.

“Hojlund has this spirit, energy, intensity, but also technical quality that is just remarkable.

"He still has so much margin for improvement, too. He is so quick, he’s under 11 seconds over 100m and that’s not even trying very hard. Considering his height, he has a low centre of gravity and can move his legs very fast. I am convinced he’ll have a great career, he just gets stronger every day.”

Something that could end up working in United’s favour is the player’s desire to move to Manchester, with Hojlund revealing earlier this year that he is a “huge” Red Devils supporter.

"Now that you ask, I will not hide the fact that I am a huge Manchester United fan.

"So personally, it would be one of the biggest things for me, but of course that doesn’t mean that I would turn down other big clubs if the offers come at some point."

It looks as if a move is proving complex, but with talks still ongoing, it appears as if it will be one to monitor over the coming weeks, with United seemingly extremely keen on getting their man.

Bal: Guha saying CoA hasn’t fulfilled its mandate

Dear Vinod,It has been a pleasure working with Diana, Vikram and you in the Supreme Court Committee of Administrators. It has been an educative experience, spending long hours with three top-flight professionals from whom I have learned a lot in these past few months. However, it has been clear for some time now that my thoughts and views are adjacent to, and sometimes at odds with, the direction the Committee is taking as a whole. That is why I eventually decided to request the Supreme Court to relieve me of the responsibility, and submitted my letter of resignation to the Court on the morning of the 1st of June. For the record, and in the interests of transparency, I am here listing the major points of divergence as I see it:1. The question of conflict of interest, which had lain unaddressed ever since the Committee began its work, and which I have been repeatedly flagging since I joined. For instance, the BCCI has accorded preferential treatment to some national coaches, by giving them ten month contracts for national duty, thus allowing them to work as IPL coaches/mentors for the remaining two months. This was done in an adhoc and arbitrary manner; the more famous the former player-turned-coach, the more likely was the BCCI to allow him to draft his own contract that left loopholes that he exploited to dodge the conflict of interest issue.I have repeatedly pointed out that it is contrary to the spirit of the Lodha Committee for coaches or the support staff of the Indian senior or junior team, or for staff at the National Cricket Academy, to have contracts in the Indian Premier League. One cannot have dual loyalties of this kind and do proper justice to both. National duty must take precedence over club affiliation.I had first raised this issue to my CoA colleagues in an email of 1st February, and have raised it several times since. I had urged that coaches and support staff for national teams be paid an enhanced compensation, but that this conflict of interest be stopped. When, on the 11th of March, I was told that that there was a camp scheduled for young players at the National Cricket Academy but at least one national coach was likely to be away on IPL work and might not attend the camp, I wrote to you:

No person under contract with an India team, or with the NCA, should be allowed to moonlight for an IPL team too.BCCI in its carelessness (or otherwise) might have drafted coaching/support staff contracts to allow this dual loyalty business, but while it might be narrowly legal as per existing contracts, it is unethical, and antithetical to team spirit, leading to much jealousy and heart-burn among the coaching staff as a whole. This practice is plainly wrong, as well as antithetical to the interests of Indian cricket.I would like an explicit and early assurance from the BCCI management that such manifestly inequitous loopholes in coaching/support staff contracts will be plugged.Yet no assurance was given, and no action was taken. The BCCI management and office-bearers have, in the absence of explicit directions from the CoA, allowed the status quo to continue.

2.I have also repeatedly pointed to the anomaly whereby BCCI-contracted commentators simultaneously act as player agents. In a mail of 19th March to the CoA I wrote:

Dear Colleagues,Please have a look at this news report:Sunil Gavaskar is head of a company which represents Indian cricketers while commenting on those cricketers as part of the BCCI TV commentary panel. This is a clear conflict of interest. Either he must step down/withdraw himself from PMG completely or stop being a commentator for BCCI.I think prompt and swift action on this matter is both just and necessary. CoA’s credibility and effectiveness hinges on our being able to take bold and correct decisions on such matters. The ‘superstar’ culture that afflicts the BCCI means that the more famous the player (former or present) the more leeway he is allowed in violating norms and procedures. (Dhoni was captain of the Indian team while holding a stake in a firm that represented some current India players.) This must stop – and only we can stop it.Yet, despite my warnings, no action has been initiated in the several months that the Committee has been in operation

As the mail quoted above noted, one reasons the conflict of interest issue has lingered unaddressed is that several of the game’s superstars, past and present, have been guilty of it. The BCCI management is too much in awe of these superstars to question their violation of norms and procedures. For their part, BCCI office-bearers like to enjoy discretionary powers, so that the coaches or commentators they favour are indebted to them and do not ever question their own mistakes or malpractices. But surely a Supreme Court appointed body should not be intimidated by the past or present achievements of a cricketer, and instead seek to strive to be fair and just.Conflict of interest is rampant in the State Associations as well. One famous former cricketer is contracted by media houses to comment on active players while serving as President of his State Association. Others have served as office-bearers in one Association and simultaneously as coaches or managers in another. The awarding of business contracts to friends and relatives by office-bearers is reported to be fairly widespread.Had we been more proactive in stopping conflict of interest within the BCCI (as per Lodha Committee recommendations, endorsed by the Court), this would surely have had a ripple effect downwards, putting pressure on State Associations to clean up their act as well.3. Unfortunately, this superstar syndrome has also distorted the system of Indian team contracts. As you will recall, I had pointed out that awarding M S Dhoni an ‘A’ contract when he had explicitly ruled himself out from all Test matches was indefensible on cricketing grounds, and sends absolutely the wrong message.4. The way in which the contract of Anil Kumble, the current Head Coach of the senior team, has been handled. The Indian team’s record this past season has been excellent; and even if the players garner the bulk of the credit, surely the Head Coach and his support staff also get some. In a system based on justice and merit, the Head Coach’s term would have been extended. Instead, Kumble was left hanging, and then told the post would be re-advertised afresh.Clearly, the issue has been handled in an extremely insensitive and unprofessional manner by the BCCI CEO and the BCCI office-bearers, with the CoA, by its silence and inaction, unfortunately being complicit in this regard. (Recall that the Court Order of 30 January had expressly mandated us to supervise the management of BCCI.) In case due process had to be followed since Kumble’s original appointment was only for one year, why was this not done during April and May, when the IPL was on? If indeed the captain and the Head Coach were not getting along, why was not this attended to as soon as the Australia series was over in late March? Why was it left until the last minutes, when a major international tournament was imminent, and when the uncertainty would undermine the morale and ability to focus of the coach, the captain and the team? And surely giving senior players the impression that they may have a veto power over the coach is another example of superstar culture gone berserk? Such a veto power is not permitted to any other top level professional team in any other sport in any other country. Already, in a dismaying departure from international norms, current Indian players enjoy a veto power on who can be the members of the commentary team. If it is to be coaches next, then perhaps the selectors and even office-bearers will follow?5. Ever since the Supreme Court announced the formation of the CoA, we have been inundated, individually and collectively, by hundreds of mails asking us to address various ills that afflict Indian cricket and its administration. While many of these issues were trivial or clearly beyond our purview, there was one concern that we should have done far more to address. This concerns the callous treatment to domestic cricket and cricketers, namely, those who represent their state in the Ranji Trophy, the Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and other inter-state tournaments. The IPL may be Indian cricket’s showpiece; but surely the enormous revenues it generates should be used to make our domestic players more financially secure? There are many more Indian cricketers who make their living via the Ranji Trophy than via IPL; besides, for us to have a consistently strong Test team (especially overseas) we need a robust inter-state competition and therefore must seek to compensate domestic players betters. And yet, shockingly, Ranji match fees have remained at a very low level (a mere Rs 30,000 odd for each day of play); moreover, cheques for match fees sent by the BCCI are sometimes not passed on by the state associations to the players. We need to learn from best practices in other countries, where domestic players are awarded annual contracts like those in the national team, while their match fees are reasonably competitive too.Several months ago, the experienced cricket administrator Amrit Mathur prepared an excellent note on the need for better and fairer treatment of domestic players. Both Diana and I have repeatedly urged action, but this has not happened.6. I believe it was a mistake for the CoA to have stayed silent and inactive when the Supreme Court judgement was being so flagrantly violated by people clearly disqualified to serve as office bearers of state and even BCCI run cricket bodies. The disqualified men were openly attending BCCI meetings, claiming to represent their state association, and indeed plated a leading role in the concerted (if fortunately in the end aborted) attempt to get the Indian team to boycott the Champions Trophy. All these illegalities were widely reported in the press; yet the CoA did not bring them to the notice of the Court, and did not issue clear directions asking the offenders to desist either.7. I believe that the lack of attention to these (and other such issues) is in part due to the absence of a senior and respected male cricketer on our Committee. Allow me to quote from a mail I wrote on 1 February 2017, before our first full meeting:

Dear fellow members,I much look forward to meeting you all later today. I know Vikram already and greatly admire both Vinod and Diana for their remarkable work in their chosen fields, and am truly honoured to be working with them as well.I presume apart from discussing IPL, etc, with the BCCI representative we will get some time to discuss the way forward separately. I have several ideas which I wish to share with you about our collective responsibility, and wanted in this mail to flag what is most important of these. This is that we must incorporate into our committee of administrators, either as a full member or as a special invitee, a senior male cricketer with the distinction and integrity that Diana has. That will greatly enhance both our credibility and our ability to make informed decisions. The absence of a respected male cricketer in the CoA has attracted a great deal of criticism already, much of it from important stakeholders in Indian cricket. It must be addressed and remedied. The amicus curae had suggested two outstanding names, Venkat and Bedi, both of whom were rejected because they were over seventy. However, there are some cricketers of the right age and experience who fit the bill. Based on my knowledge of the subject, I would say Javagal Srinath would be an excellent choice. He is a world-class cricketer, was a successful and scandal-free Secretary of the Karnataka State Cricket Association and is an ICC match referee, and comes from an educated technical background to boot. I strongly urge the Chairman and the other members to consider approaching him in this regard. He would complement Diana perfectly, and the combination of these two respected and top class former cricketers would enhance our credibility and effectiveness enormously. While Srinath is in my view the best choice, there are other alternative names too. I hope we can set aside some time at our meeting to discuss and resolve the issue. With regards Ramp.s. Needless to say, I have not discussed this with Srinath or with anyone else.

I raised this issue in a formal meeting of the CoA as well, but unfortunately my proposal to invite a senior male cricketer to join the committee was not acted upon. We should have approached the Court to take necessary action, or else incorporated a senior, respected, male cricketer as a special invitee. With such a person on board the CoA would have gained in experience, knowledge, understanding, and, not least, credibility. Indeed, had we such a person on board, the BCCI management and the office-bearers would have been compelled to be far more proactive in implementing the Lodha Committee recommendations than they have been thus far. As the only cricketers on the CoA, Diana’s contributions have been invaluable; on many issues of administration and the rights of players she has brought a perspective based on a first-hand experience that the rest of us lacked. A male counterpart would have complemented and further enriched her contributions; but perhaps it is not too late to make amends.8. While all our meetings were held in cordial atmosphere, between meetings perhaps there was not adequate consultation, and there were several crucial decisions made where all the CoA members were not brought into the loop. For instance, a capable, non-political Senior Counsel representing the CoA and the BCCI in the Supreme Court was abruptly replaced by another Senior Counsel who is a party politician. Surely other CoA members should have been consulted by email or by phone before this important change was made.I have taken too much of your time already, but permit me to make one last suggestion. This is that the place vacated by me on the Committee of Administrators be filled by a senior, respected, male cricketer with administrative experience.Let me in conclusion thank you for your courtesy and civility these past few months, and wish you and the Committee all the best in your future endeavours. With best wishesRamchandra Guha

Liverpool Ready To Pursue Move For £60m "Exceptional Talent"

Liverpool are now ready to battle Newcastle United for the signature of Marc Guehi, but Crystal Palace are set to hold out for bids in excess of £60m if they are to sanction an exit for the defender, according to a report from Football Insider.

Is Marc Guehi leaving Crystal Palace?

With Guehi currently contracted until the summer of 2026, Palace are under no pressure to sell him this summer, but there is growing interest in his signature, with a number of top Premier League clubs now said to be eyeing moves.

Tottenham Hotspur have previously been linked with a move for the Englishman, with north London rivals Arsenal also being named as potential suitors, as Mikel Arteta is keen to bolster his backline.

Newcastle and Liverpool have been competing for several of the same targets this summer, with the Reds ultimately beating the Magpies to the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai, while they are also competing for Sporting CP youngster Goncalo Inacio.

There may now be another battle for the signature of Guehi, according to a report from Football Insider, which details that Liverpool are now ready to fight it out with their Premier League rivals.

However, they have been made aware that the 6-foot defender will not come cheap, as Palace are set to ask for bids in excess of £60m, if they are to sanction an exit for one of their prized assets.

Spurs and Arsenal are also still in the frame, but there is a belief that Palace's asking price could make the difficult very difficult to orchestrate, even for the Premier League's elite clubs.

After dazzling for the second season on the spin at Selhurst Park, the Eagles are unwilling to let their academy graduate leave for less than they think he is worth.

Is Marc Guehi signing for Liverpool?

If Palace are unwilling to lower their asking price, it seems unlikely that FSG sanction a move for the 22-year-old, given that the owners are not exactly known for overspending on players.

Liverpool's net owner funding in the last five years comes in at second-lowest in the division, at negative £37m.

However, if the Eagles lower their asking price later in the transfer window, the up-and-coming centre-back could be a fantastic addition to Klopp's squad.

Hailed as an "exceptional talent" by members of the media, the former Swansea City now has four caps for England, having impressed at club level, averaging a 6.94 Sofascore match rating last season, a higher figure than Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Former manager Patrick Vieira has also heaped praise on the England international. saying: “He’s an ambitious player who wants the best for himself and wants to represent his country. He’s been working well, really hard.

“When you look at his performances for us in the year-and-a-half I’ve been here, it’s been really consistent and good.He just has to keep working like that and he will get a time to play in a World Cup and get a chance to represent his country."

Guehi is not yet the finished article, but he has proven himself at Premier League level, and has the potential to become a top player.

'Like someone sticking a knife in my side'

Chris Woakes knew his Champions Trophy was over when he left the field against Bangladesh after bowling just two overs with a side strain which felt like ‘someone sticking a knife in my side’

Agarkar: Woakes a huge loss at the death

Chris Woakes knew his Champions Trophy was over as soon as he left the field against Bangladesh after bowling just two overs, having sustained a side strain which felt like “someone sticking a knife in my side”.Scans following the match on Thursday evening revealed the extent of his injury, which could also make him a doubt for the start of the Test series against South Africa which begins on July 6. A replacement for England’s Champions Trophy squad is expected to be named late on Saturday after England Lions – who include two contenders in Steven Finn and Tom Curran – complete their second one-day match against South Africa A.”I finished two overs but it was probably on the third or fourth ball of the second over that it felt like something had become tight in my side,” Woakes said. “I managed to finish the over but, by the last ball, I knew that something really wasn’t right. To a certain extent, it felt like someone was sticking a knife in my side. That was why I didn’t come back out.”I knew yesterday that it wasn’t going to be good news. It was then a matter of seeing how bad it would be on the scan results.”The toughest thing as a bowler is having to come off after only bowling a couple of overs. Leaving the guys out there with almost 10 men is difficult to take, so I’m really pleased the boys managed to get over the line with a win.”Woakes had gone into the Bangladesh match nursing a tight quad that led to his omission from the final two matches of England’s recent ODI series against South Africa, but he seemed back to his best when he opened the tournament with a maiden to Tamim Iqbal. He was one of three players – along with Ben Stokes, who is also managing a knee injury, and Jos Buttler – who had extended stays at the IPL, but Woakes insisted he returned from the tournament feeling in tip-top condition.”When I came back from the IPL, my body felt as good as it can be. I felt in a good space physically and mentally, and I was confident too because I bowled well out there,” he said. “There were no signs of my side being tight or sore before the game yesterday, so it’s just one of those things and you have to take it on the chin.”England captain Eoin Morgan said after the Bangladesh game that Woakes had not been rushed back from the quad niggle. “He was chomping at the bit to play,” he said. “If we rushed him, he might have played the last game of the [South Africa] one-day series but we didn’t want to rush him.”While a timescale for Woakes’ recovery remains uncertain, things can get especially tricky if the injury involves damage to the intercostal muscles, because, even when fully recovered, fast bowlers in particular find it hard to hit the crease with their usual aggression for fear of suffering a relapse.”I will rehab it as well as I can,” Woakes said. “I’ll listen to the medical staff, they know exactly what they are doing. We will be as professional as possible and try and get back as soon as possible.”I don’t want to set a target to come back, I want to take it day-by-day and build it back up to return as soon as possible. I’ve never had a side strain before but, as a bowler, it’s one of those injuries that is important not to risk.”In Woakes’ absence, England’s remaining bowlers did enough to limit Bangladesh to an obtainable 305 for 6. However, their seam attack remains a cause for concern. Jake Ball – included in place of the legspinner Adil Rashid – struggled for form, conceding 82 runs in his ten overs, while doubts still linger over Stokes’ ability to bowl a full spell following his knee injury. The likeliest replacement is Finn, who was considered unlucky to have missed out on original selection for the squad, in spite of his occasionally erratic form in recent months. He signalled his readiness for a recall by claiming three wickets for England Lions against South Africa A on Thursday.Other candidates could be Toby Roland-Jones, the Middlesex seamer who made his debut against South Africa at Lord’s and offers batting ability, or Surrey’s Tom Curran who was called up to the tour of West Indies earlier this year.Given that England are now in the midst of a global tournament, another strong candidate could have been Stuart Broad, a proven international performer who has not been a regular member of the one-day set-up since the end of the 2015 World Cup, but was drafted into the tour of South Africa last winter. However, it is understood that he is not under consideration.
