Newcastle may have sold another Lewis Miley for just £1.5m

In the past few years, English clubs – including Newcastle United – have begun to produce a high-level crop of midfield players. Birmingham City can take credit for the development of perhaps the world’s best player at the moment, Jude Bellingham. The 20-year-old now plays for Real Madrid, having played for Borussia Dortmund in between.

Declan Rice, now an Arsenal player, was brought through by West Ham United, after originally being in Chelsea’s academy, and the likes of Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount were successful products of the same famous Cobham academy, with the former an integral player at the Blues and the latter now at Manchester United.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice

More recently, Kobbie Mainoo is the young midfielder breaking through and becoming one of the top talents in the world. It has been a rapid rise for 18-year-old Mainoo, who made his full debut for England’s senior side just five months after his first Premier League start for Manchester United.

Newcastle youngster Lewis Miley is another exciting up-and-coming midfielder and has already played 17 games in the Premier League before his 18th birthday. Aside from Miley, Newcastle have some talented youngsters coming through in midfield, including 21-year-old Joe White, who returned to St James’ Park in January after his loan spell at Crewe Alexandra ended.

However, the Magpies may have let another young talent in midfield slip through the cracks, and depart the club for a major Premier League rival, where he is now making waves and contributing to first-team success.

Newcastle let a talented teen leave for peanuts

It was August 2021 when exciting talent Bobby Clark left Newcastle to join Premier League rivals Liverpool. According to Lee Ryder of The Chronicle Live, the transfer was swiftly completed by the Reds, who convinced Clark to move to Anfield rather than sign a scholarship with the Magpies.

It will surely disappoint Newcastle fans, who would no doubt have wanted Clark to follow in his father’s footsteps and pull on the famous black and white stripes at St James’ Park. The youngster's father is Toon legend Lee Clark, who made 260 appearances for the club across two spells in both the 1990s and early 2000s.

Liverpool's Bobby Clark.

The fee Liverpool paid for Clark is rumoured to be in the region of £1.5m, and whilst it may seem a lot on a young player, there is no denying his talent. After all, the aforementioned Ryder said he reminded the reporter of a "young Paul Gascoigne."

Sadly for those in the north east, according to Clark’s father, he decided to join the Merseyside club due to the amount of knowledge they already had about him as a footballer, and “because one day they believed he could be a first-team player for Liverpool”.

How Clark and Miley compare

It is fair to say that the opportunities Miley has had this season may have also befallen Clark had the Liverpool man decided to stay at St James’ Park all of those years ago.

Bobby Clark for Liverpool

Miley’s 17 games in the Premier League this term originally came due to an injury crisis, but have now been fully deserved. As Matthew Robson said on Newcastle Fan website The Mag, “No matter who he has been up against, Lewis Miley hasn’t looked out of place”.

Clark’s job is harder. He has to break into a settled Liverpool midfield with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai all ahead of him. However, he has played 14 times for Liverpool so far and scored his first goal against Sparta Prague in the Europa League this season, as well as registering two assists, one in the Europa League and one in the FA Cup.

As a footballer, Miley and Clark are not too dissimilar. They are busy midfielders, of a similar profile, excelling in the final third although are both more than capable of playing in all phases, and are not afraid of getting on the ball and looking to impact the game.

Miley averages 50 touches per 90 minutes this season, as per Fbref, and in comparison, Clark averages 47 touches per 90 minutes in the Europa League, according to Sofascore. This shows impressive maturity and bravery in their game, which is rare in midfielders so young.

The pair look after the ball well when in possession, with Miley averaging a pass accuracy of 84% in the top-flight according to Sofascore, and Clark just slightly worse at 78%, although with a much smaller sample size. They enjoy getting on the ball in deeper areas, pulling the strings and kickstarting attacks, before crashing the box looking to get on the end of crosses.

It will certainly frustrate Newcastle that they failed to keep hold of 19-year-old Clark, who is now beginning to break into Liverpool’s first team and show similar levels of talent to Miley. If things had turned out differently, he could’ve helped Newcastle through their injury crisis this season, rather than becoming a breakout star at Anfield.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Moyes must unleash West Ham star who will be more important than Zouma

West Ham United looked to have regained form after a dreadful start to 2024 but met a hitch in the road after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Freiburg last Thursday.

The first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie was contested in relative comfort for David Moyes' side before substitute Michael Gregoritsch pounced late on to leave work to do in London, with poor finishing the crux of West Ham's struggles.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

That said, numerous players are capable of making an impact in the final third in east London, but the performance of captain Kurt Zouma in the backline will be crucial, allowing the Frenchman's offensive peers to flourish.

Why Kurt Zouma will be crucial vs Freiburg

Zouma was rested for West Ham's Premier League clash against relegation-threatened Burnley on Sunday afternoon and the Clarets stormed into an unlikely two-goal lead before half-time.

Sure, the Hammers recovered after the break but it's clear that Zouma's presence will be pivotal this evening given Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nayef Aguerd's collective lack of authority, the former notably netting an own goal.

Zouma, 29, should have done better to close down Gregoritsch last week and, truthfully, he's not enjoying his finest campaign for West Ham, but there's no question that he is the club's best centre-back and has still impressed with 3.1 ball recoveries and 4.9 clearances per game in the top-flight this season, as per Sofascore, also winning 54% of his duels.

The £125k-per-week star also ranks among the top 9% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored per 90, as per FBref, so his imposing threat from set-pieces could make all the difference against a Freiburg side that will battle fiercely to protect their advantage.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Unleashing him from the outset will be key, but probably more important is the return of Edson Alvarez to the starting line-up, with the Mexico international introduced at the break against Burnley to stabilise the ship and guide his team toward a draw.

Edson Alvarez will be the difference-maker tonight

West Ham signed Alvarez from Ajax for around £35m last summer as the most direct replacement for Declan Rice, who now plays his trade for Arsenal.

The tough-tackling midfielder has been described as "invaluable" by pundit Rio Ferdinand in the past and he definitely looks to be the solvent in the centre, with his four missed appearances in the Premier League yielding poor results.

To highlight his importance, the 26-year-old has completed 86% of his passes in the league this season, averaging 4.9 successful duels, 2.6 tackles, 2.5 clearances and 5.3 ball recoveries per match.

He won six duels and made two tackles against Burnley and will be vital in beating down West Ham's German opposition tonight, doing the groundwork that will allow Jarrod Bowen and co to find openings.

The 6 foot 2 ace was rested on Sunday in preparation for the clash against Freiburg and while it's clear that he will indeed start, the importance of his performance cannot be understated: he will determine the outcome of West Ham's European conquest today.

PIF may now sell "exceptional" Newcastle star to fund summer spending spree

Newcastle United and PIF could be ready to part ways with one of their stars this summer in a bid to strengthen their squad before the new season.

Below par season to date

Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup confirmed that Newcastle United will end the season without a trophy once more, and the Magpies have suffered a difficult season across all competitions.

Finishing bottom of their Champions League group, albeit having been handed the group of death, they have seen an injury list of epic proportions force Eddie Howe to rely on the same core group of players for much of the season.

They are on course for a poor finish in the Premier League too, with the Magpies currently in 10th place and having won just two of their last five league games, form that is unlikely to see them break into the top 8 and qualify for European football next season.

Should they miss out entirely, there may well have to be some painful departures come the summer, with plenty of their squad used to Champions League football and Financial Fair Play looming large in the rear-view mirror.

It is no secret that difficult decisions will have to be taken, with the club's CEO Darren Eales admitting as much earlier in the campaign.

“It's just the nature of the beast. If you trade players on, it creates more headroom," Eales explained. "You have to keep growing that headroom, increasing commercial revenue and player trading.

“Any decision we make will always be against the backdrop of the medium to long-term benefit for the club. It’s difficult to say specifically on certain players, but I can say that, if we’re going to get to where we want to get to, at times it is necessary to trade your players."

Now, reports suggest that the Magpies are coming round to the idea of possibly letting one man leave in order to ease their FFP concerns and allow them to continue what they hope is their upward trajectory.

Bruno Guimaraes could leave Newcastle

The man in question is none other than Newcastle talisman Bruno Guimaraes, who is understood to have a £100m release clause in his contract and is being tracked by a whole host of clubs ahead of a potential summer bidding war for his services.

Chief among the interested parties are understood to be Manchester City, and Pep Guardiola has made no secret of his admiration of the Brazilian.

“He is an exceptional holding midfielder. He is aggressive, with the ball or without the ball. At set pieces, he’s aggressive and is a real, complete holding midfielder since being at Lyon and now at a club who want to grow up and up."

Now, Football Insider journalist Pete O'Rourke reports that Newcastle 'will be forced' to sell one star this summer and that 'Guimaraes is high on the list of those who could be sacrificed', with the Brazilian frustrated with how the season has panned out to date.

ByBen Browning Mar 16, 2024

It is added that 'Newcastle need to raise funds before signing any targets'. With Guimaraes having a release clause in his contract, any deal could be concluded swiftly and could be the easiest way of raising quick cash this summer to fund their own transfer business, which the report adds could include as many as four new faces before the new season.

Spurs ace is now well and truly undroppable after 9/10 Luton display

Before the international break, Tottenham Hotspur were handed a reality check by Fulham, suffering a rather frustrating 3-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.

However, the Lilywhites' Champions League dream got back underway this weekend after a fantastic performance against Luton Town.

Dejan Kulusevski for Tottenham

Although the 2-1 scoreline doesn’t reflect a dominant performance, Ange Postecoglou will be pleased with the way his side bounced back from an early deficit to claim the vital three points.

The Australian will also be thrilled with the way one player particularly seized their opportunity to shine after being subbed on at half-time.

Brennan Johnson’s 23/24 campaign

After moving from Nottingham Forest to Spurs in the summer for a large fee of £47.5m, the pressure to succeed was almost instant for Brennan Johnson.

However, the boss has managed his minutes extremely well, playing the Welsh attacker in 26 matches, with 18 of those being starts.

Brennan Johnson in action for Tottenham.

Despite only being at the club for a short period, Johnson is already proving to be a smart signing, with his four goals and seven assists being a respectable output.

That said, the number 22 has been particularly impactful over the last month, picking up two assists against Crystal Palace and scoring the second goal against Aston Villa, but his performance against Luton Town yesterday may have been his best in a Spurs shirt.

Postecoglou’s side returned to winning ways after the international break after yet another turnaround.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 30, 2024 Brennan Johnson is now undroppable after Luton Display

Yesterday, Tottenham went into the break with a one-goal deficit after a rather frustrating first half against the Hatters, and at half-time, Johnson was called upon by Postecoglou. The Wales international certainly didn’t let his boss down, putting in a performance that surely made him undroppable from now until the end of the season.

To put into context just how game-changing the former Forest ace was, the Evening Standard handed him a 9/10 rating, stating that “he immediately made an impact”.

The ace, who’s been playing on both flanks this season, played a huge part in both goals that eventually gave Tottenham the win, firstly putting in a lovely whipped cross that Issa Kabore slammed into his own net just five minutes after his entrance.

Johnson continued to be Spurs’ biggest threat for the remainder of the tie, completing three key passes and adding intensity to the attacking play via his unstoppable dribbling.

The 22-year-old also won all of his ground duels and could have had a goal to his name had the ball not been cleared off the line. Luckily, he was on hand to set up the winning goal in the 86th minute, showing tremendous vision and composure to lay the ball off to Son Heung-min, who converted from near the penalty spot.

Johnson’s substitution certainly changed the game completely, and he will have surely worked his way into Postecoglou’s best starting lineup, with that right-wing role set to be his instead of Dejan Kulusevski's going forward.

Ederson has been Pep Guardiola's ideal goalkeeper – but the time is right for Man City to bid farewell to Brazilian amid Saudi Arabia interest

The No.1 has been pivotal to the Cityzens' enduring success, but his powers have been waning lately and a succession plan is already in place

There has always been a paradox with Pep Guardiola and goalkeepers. Over the course of his glittering 16-year career in management, the Catalan coach has rarely had to rely on a 'keeper to bail his sides out.

His two Champions League final wins with Barcelona were so dominant that Victor Valdes barely had to make a save. The Catalans, meanwhile, won the Copa del Rey twice with Jose Manuel Pinto, a ‘keeper that, it is believed, only stayed so long at the club due to his friendship with Lionel Messi.

Manuel Neuer was superb in Guardiola's three years at Bayern Munich, but each season his side stormed to the Bundesliga title, rarely having to look to the goalkeeper to keep them on track. It could have been said that, in his first seven years, Guardiola was able to take goalkeepers for granted. But all that changed when he took charge of Manchester City.

  • Getty

    Pivotal to Pep's success

Guardiola's first major act at City was to drop Joe Hart due to his perceived lack of distribution skills and sign Claudio Bravo from Barcelona to replace him. It soon became apparent that the Chilean was not cut out for English football and his struggles were a big reason why City only finished third in the Premier League that season while failing to win a trophy, the only time that has happened in Guardiola’s coaching career.

City scoured the market for a new goalkeeper and landed on Ederson, paying a then world-record £34 million ($43m) to bring him in from Benfica. The Brazilian was unaffected by the pressure of the transfer fee and quickly proved to be Guardiola’s knight in shining armour.

His seven years with City have witnessed unprecedented success, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph which, unlike Valdes, he proved crucial to pulling off. Yet despite everything they have achieved together, the timing could be just right for City and Ederson to part ways.

    Time for change

Ederson has been City’s undisputed No.1 for the last eight years, although that status ever so slightly faded last season, when he sustained a number of injuries over the course of the campaign and Stefan Ortega performed admirably in his absence.

Ederson never had anything to worry about from his previous deputies Bravo, Scott Carson or Zack Steffen, who could not match his footwork skills and were not particularly adept at shot-stopping either.

But Ortega, who joined City on a free transfer in the summer of 2022 after being relegated from the Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld, has proven a much fiercer rival to the Brazilian. Ortega quickly demonstrated his calmness on the ball and his ability to play out of his area when he got the nod in cup competitions in his debut season.

His long-kicking was also impressive and played a part in Ilkay Gundogan’s record-breaking goal in last year’s FA Cup final against Manchester United. And last season he held his own in some of City’s biggest games when Ederson was injured, keeping a clean sheet against Arsenal and performing well in the Champions League quarter-final 3-3 draw with Real Madrid.

  • Getty Images

    Ortega is ready

Ortega’s best intervention, though, came in the most crucial moment of the title race, in the penultimate game at Tottenham, when Ederson had to go off after fracturing his eye socket in a clash with Cristian Romero. In the 86th minute, Son Heung-min bared down on City’s goal with a glorious chance to level the game and hand the initiative in the title race back to Arsenal, but Ortega turned into a giant spider, thwarting the South Korean with his right leg.

Moments later, Erling Haaland scored a penalty to effectively secure the title, although Ortega was the real hero, his save proving crucial to City staying on course for a record fourth title. And in the eyes of many, it was the moment in which Ortega proved he could be the heir to Ederson’s throne.

A month before, the German had said he would have to “choose wisely” about his next step as he mulled whether to remain at City as the second-choice or seek his fortune elsewhere as a No.1.

Less than a month later, and despite a disappointing FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United, Ortega signed a new contract with City. That suggests that he also believed that he could either take Ederson on next season or that he suspected the Brazilian would be about to leave and vacate the starting spot.

A lot has been made about how Ederson reacted to that save. According to , the Brazilian did not enjoy the adulation that his team-mate received. That has been dismissed as ‘fake news’ by Ederson’s wife. However, it should be noted that just a few days after the win over Tottenham, while the Brazilian was still nursing his eye injury, the first reports about potential interest in him from Saudi Arabia emerged.

Perhaps aware of the potential for Ederson to be sensitive to praise for Ortega, Guardiola had been at pains to point out the Brazilian’s value to his team immediately after the Tottenham win.

"Do you know why we won the Champions League?" he asked. "It was Ederson. In Madrid, at 1-1, he made an incredible save from a header from [Karim] Benzema. The Champions League final, he was the key player, the key to winning. We cannot define the period without Eddie, impossible."

But that period does seem to be close to ending. Reports of the interest from Saudi Arabia have only grown over the summer, and the numbers involved are eye-watering. Ederson was offered a staggering £900,000 per week ($1.1m) by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, although the club were not willing to meet City’s £50m ($63m) valuation.

Al-Ittihad are now the frontrunners to sign Ederson, and even if they are to offer lower terms than Al-Nassr, they will still blow City out the water. Ederson is reported to be on £190,000 ($242k) per week at City. There has been talk of him receiving a pay hike to remain in Manchester, but if it is to come down to money, City will not stand a chance.

Fim do jejum do artilheiro

Wilson evita o empate

Londrina volta melhor e consegue a igualdade

O gol sofrido acordou o Coritiba no 2° tempo.

A bola explodiu no travessão.

'Apart from Kumara, no one stuck to a plan' – Sri Lanka assistant coach Ratnayake

Pakistan progressed at a run rate of 3.76 through the 90 overs they faced on Saturday, taking firm control of the Karachi Test

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Karachi21-Dec-2019Sri Lanka’s bowlers didn’t bowl tight enough. Aside from Lahiru Kumara, they also failed to build pressure and bowl in partnerships. This was the verdict of assistant coach Rumesh Ratnayake at stumps on the third day, in which Sri Lanka conceded 338 runs and claimed only two wickets.Pakistan progressed at a run rate of 3.76 through the 90 overs they faced on Saturday. In the morning session their run rate had been as high as 4.54. Ratnayake said that although his team expected the surface to become better for batting, they had hoped to keep the rate of scoring in better check.”Each session we had a target – we wanted to keep them to 70 to 80 runs,” he said. “But we couldn’t do that. Some of the plans were very simple – keeping it tight in line with the stumps. Also, keeping it on the right length. Those were not hard plans to adhere to. Some of the guys did it, but some didn’t. Those partnerships didn’t happen when bowling, which I felt was a big miss.”Lahiru Kumara celebrates a wicket•AFP

Kumara, the 22-year-old quick, was the only one to claim wickets on day three, bowling quicker than 145kph at times. In fact, for large portions of the day, no other bowler appeared capable of breaking through. He had also taken four wickets in the first innings, along with left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya, who went wicketless on Saturday.”Apart from Lahiru Kumara, no one else stuck to a plan well enough. They didn’t create those partnerships with him. Our target tomorrow would be to restrict them as much as possible. It’s up to the bowlers – not only Kumara and Embuldeniya – to come into the game and bowl tightly.”Ratnayake did state that the Karachi surface had become substantially flatter than it had been earlier. Both teams had extracted seam movement through the course of the first innings. But lateral movement was not seen on day three, nor was the bounce and carry that had contributed to the bowlers’ effectiveness on days one and two.”There might have been a little bit of moisture. But as time went by it started drying out and the heavy roller was used by Pakistan, because of which it became a placid wicket. Saying that there was a little bit of turn at the end of the day. The fourth day will be interesting.”

“Nail in the coffin” – Sky pundit makes claim on Ten Hag’s Man Utd future

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag may have had the final "nail in the coffin" at the club after Sir Jim Ratcliffe's recent antics, according to former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Ten Hag under pressure at Man Utd

The Dutchman is coming towards the end of his second season at Old Trafford, but after an impressive first season at the club, this has been a really disappointing campaign.

United are currently languishing in seventh place in the Premier League, and while the recent 2-2 draws at home to Liverpool and away to Bournemouth may not have been awful results, the performances in both have been nowhere near good enough.

There is mounting pressure on Ten Hag, with many fans beginning to wonder if he is the right man to lead the club forward under Ratcliffe, ahead of what is hopefully a memorable summer in the transfer market. Graham Potter is just one of numerous candidates reportedly being lined up to replace the former Ajax boss, should he be relieved of his duties.

These remaining weeks of the season feel key for the Dutchman, who continues to flatter to deceive with his all-round management, from his people skills to his tactical nous.

Sky Sports pundit makes big Ten Hag claim

Speaking on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson feels that Ten Hag is close to being sacked by Manchester United, with Ratcliffe not having plans for him while looking to make many backroom changes since arriving at the club.

"With the football side of things, you can see that Ratcliffe is putting his own stamp on things. You can see things are changing. You can’t change things on the pitch immediately because of the transfer windows and the manager that’s in charge.

"I just think that with all this restructuring and with Dan Ashworth coming in, Sir David Brailsford, [former Southampton chief] Jason Wilcox – the whole board – I think it’s just another nail in the coffin for ten Hag. He’s not the manager that the board want – he’s not their man. He’s not part of that new team.

"Ten Hag has one big job on his hands before the end of the season – convince the board that he is the right man for the Man United job. At the moment, I don’t see him being there much longer, certainly past the end of the season."

The Bournemouth game was just the latest sign that Ten Hag isn't the right man for the United job, with his side once again giving up at least 20 shots, and generally being outplayed by the Cherries.

The backroom additions that Ratcliffe has made have been exciting ones, but things will only run smoothly if they have the perfect manager in charge to work alongside the new additions seamlessly.

Man Utd make first move to sign "great" new free agent for Ten Hag

The Red Devils aren’t messing around…

There is enough evidence this season to suggest that Ten Hag can be improved upon, and unless the season ends superbly – an FA Cup win, for example – it would be the right call to move him on and find a more ideal choice.

'Clinical' Glenn Maxwell still in ODI frame – Aaron Finch

The Australia captain’s words follow the allrounder’s match-winning display for Melbourne Stars against Sydney Thunder

Daniel Brettig09-Jan-2020Glenn Maxwell picked a typically opportune time to rattle the Melbourne Stars to a Big Bash League victory at the MCG, leaving his erstwhile Melbourne Renegades rival and now the Australia ODI captain Aaron Finch to explain why the allrounder wasn’t joining him on the plane to India. After a World Cup campaign that fell short of expectations, and a battle with mental-health issues that forced an extended break from the game in the first half of the season, Maxwell is a T20 concern only for the time being, meaning he is with the Stars for the duration of the BBL and will next play for Australia in their next bracket of T20Is ahead of the World Cup on home soil later this year. However, the fact that the next 50-overs World Cup is to be held in India in 2023, a part of the world that Maxwell knows intimately through his many IPL and international campaigns, means that Finch, the national coach Justin Langer and his senior assistant Andrew McDonald will be looking again in the 31-year-old’s direction before the time comes to name the Cup squad.”People look at [that innings] and they see the results and see all the sixes and all the big hitting, but the way he approached it last night was very clinical,” Finch said of Maxwell. “The way that he gave himself a bit of a chance early and then dominated late. Once he’s in, you can’t bowl to him anywhere. He’s got an answer to everything.”It’s never closed, but when you’re picking a side there has to be a spot there. It just comes down to being in the right place at the right time and having the right match-up. You can only pick so many top-three batters. Guys that have been a part of the squad, Shaun Marsh for example, was disappointed as well after playing some great cricket for the last couple of years, but anyone who misses out is disappointed.”For the time being, the selectors have chosen to take a closer look instead at this summer’s breakout Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne, who with his energy, part-time spin bowling and strong footwork against spin looks a useful addition to the white-ball squad, if not quite so explosive as Maxwell can be. Finch said Labuschagne’s burgeoning friendship with Steven Smith should ensure that by the time the team sets up for the first ODI against India he will be well and truly across the team’s plans.”We know that he’s not going to be overawed by the occasion,” Finch said. “He’s come back into Test cricket after missing out at the start of the Ashes and he’s been unbelievable, so hopefully he can continue that. The form that he showed in the one-day games was outstanding domestically.”He’s averaging up around 40 there batting at three, batting at four for Queensland on what’s been traditionally a little bit tougher batting conditions over the last couple of years in domestic cricket. Playing on some slower wickets that spin quite a bit, to be able to come in and do that role really well for Queensland is obviously what’s got him a place in the side, as well as his current form. I don’t see why it wouldn’t translate.”Marnus Labuschagne bowls in the nets•Getty ImagesAustralia’s tour of India for three ODIs in the middle of January will see the BBL take centre-stage, while the players and broadcasters alike get used to being elsewhere during what is usually peak cricket time in the school holidays. Fox Sports has already made its displeasure known at the scheduling of a BBL match directly opposite one of Australia’s matches in India, and for Finch the scenario is not one he has previously contemplated.”It’s something we didn’t expect to come up even a few months ago,” he said. “But obviously there was a few games’ shortfall with India in the last couple of years, so it doesn’t make a difference to us to be honest, if you’re playing one-day cricket anywhere it’s exciting. Would’ve been nice to play a few more internationals at home during this period but it’s just not possible.”Instead, Smith, David Warner, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will be turning out in India, and Finch said that for the bowlers there will be the opportunity to reconnect with white-ball cricket after five Tests, while the batsmen need to make the most of their starts in conditions that ease markedly once the first 20 or so balls have been negotiated.”It’s a place where once you get in – it can be a really tough place to start your innings, the ball can swing early, can spin early. So once you get in it can be a beautiful place to bat, the outfields are obviously rapid, so you make the most of that. Any top-order player, once you get to 20 or 30, you really want to go on and cash in. That’ll be the task for our top four.”[The pace bowlers] were all keen to get on this tour and play as much as they could and keep developing their skills. Especially someone like Josh, who’s been out of the side for quite a while now through injury and workload management at different times. I think the fact they’re all so keen to get over there and do well is really exciting.”
