Blow for Sunderland as player out of Swansea game and could miss 13 matches

A “powerful” Sunderland player will not only miss the weekend clash with Swansea City but could also be out for the next 13 matches, as confirmed by manager Regis Le Bris.

Latest Sunderland news

The Black Cats’ form has stalled a little in recent weeks, with only one win in their last six Championship matches, following such a blistering start to the season.

Le Bris’ fourth-place Sunderland side are back in league action on Saturday afternoon, making the trip to a Swansea team who are currently sitting ninth in the table. It promises to be another test of their promotion credentials, with further dropped points casting doubt over their hopes of reaching the Premier League automatically this season.

Kristjaan Speakman has spoken positively about the potential for January reinforcements, however, which could be needed to give the Black Cats the added quality that they crave: “We’ve just got to be really diligent in the moment, able to react and action things really quickly within the month of January. I’m really optimistic about what we can achieve.”

Injuries can have the potential to derail any team’s season, though, with Sunderland not without fitness issues this term, and now a fresh blow has emerged.

Injury blow for "powerful" Sunderland ace

Speaking on Thursday, Le Bris confirmed that Sunderland winger Tom Watson is expected to be out injured for around two months, meaning he could miss as many as 13 games leading up to the middle of February.

This is a huge blow for Watson and Sunderland, with the 18-year-old impressing so much for such a young player, scoring twice in six Championship starts so far this season.

With Jack Clarke departing to Ipswich Town during the summer transfer window, he has really stepped up, with Le Bris heading praise on him, saying: “When you have a winger with the ability to run inside and outside and cross, it’s a gift for a coach and a team. He works well.

“The system is well designed for him. We can use him very quickly and play to his main strengths. He’s powerful, he can dribble, he can move inside and outside and he scored. He’s very strong, a very good winger in this league.”

While Watson isn’t necessarily one of the first names on Le Bris’ team sheet, he is still going to be a massive loss in the coming months, having done so well for a player so young.

New Zealand Women’s assistant coach Jacob Oram has left the squad and returned home to his family after learning that his wife and two children have tested positive for Covid-19.Head coach Bob Carter was fully supportive of Oram’s decision. “Ultimately, family is the most important thing, so we fully support Jacob and his need to return home and care for his loved ones,” Carter said.Related

Devine had developed back issues while batting and had to retire hurt on 37. They are currently sixth on the table having won only two of their six games, and will move to Christchurch on Monday for their last league game against Pakistan on Saturday.

Celtic could land upgrade on Hatate in "bargain" swoop for "hot" sensation

Celtic return to action in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday as they prepare to travel away from Parkhead to take on Hearts in the evening kick-off.

The Hoops have had a two-week break, thanks to the last international window of 2024, and will be hoping to pick up where they left off, having won ten of their 11 matches in the league thus far.

Brendan Rodgers will be hoping that all of his stars return from international duty without any injury issues that could keep them out for the upcoming matches in the Premiership and the Champions League.

He may, therefore, be thankful that his three Japanese gems barely featured for their country, as Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate made one substitute appearance each, whilst Daizen Maeda featured in both games as a substitute.

The trio were not overworked by Japan in their two matches and will now return to Celtic fresh and ready to compete, and possibly start, against Hearts on Saturday.

Hatate has faced serious competition for his place in the starting XI for the Scottish giants this season, though, with the additions of Arne Engels and Luke McCowan, and the return of Paulo Bernardo, in the summer.

Reo Hatate's form for Celtic

The 26-year-old star has still managed to make the line-up on a regular basis in the Premiership, with nine starts in 11 matches, and that speaks to how much Rodgers trusts him.

Hatate, who was restricted to 16 league outings last term through injury, has prevented McCowan and Bernardo from being regular starters in the top-flight, with Engels and Callum McGregor the usual picks alongside him in the midfield three.

The Japan international has earned his place in the starting XI with dynamic and quality performances in the middle of the park, as he has been able to showcase his ability in possession.

As you can see in the table above, Hatate has provided quality as both a scorer and a creator from a midfield position for Celtic in the Premiership, and he has been unfortunate not to register a single assist so far.

His return of zero assists from four ‘big chances’ created and 14 key passes suggests that his teammates have let him down with their wasteful finishing in the final third, as they have not made the most of his creativity.

The midfield whiz has also produced one goal and one assist in four matches in the Champions League for Celtic, starting three of those matches on the European stage, with his goal coming against RB Leipzig earlier this month.

Despite Hatate’s strong form in all competitions this season, Rodgers could go and land an upgrade on the Hoops star by swooping for one of the club’s reported transfer targets – Lennon Miller.

Celtic's interest in Lennon Miller

The Daily Mail recently reported that Celtic are interested in a potential move to sign the Scotland U21 international from Premiership rivals Motherwell when the January transfer window opens for business.

It was claimed that the Hoops and their Glasgow rivals Rangers are both preparing swoops to snap the Scottish starlet up ahead of the second half of the season.

The report added, however, that Premier League giants Liverpool are also keeping tabs on the 18-year-old dynamo and could join the race for his signature. This suggests that Celtic and Rangers could face some serious competition for his services, as Arne Slot’s side are currently top of the English top-flight and could be an attractive destination.

Celtic were dealt a blow by the attraction of a move to Anfield in 2022 when 16-year-old starlet Ben Doak decided to move on from Parkhead to join the Reds for a compensation fee of £600k.

The Bhoys will be hoping that the allure of the Premier League does not hurt them again, as Miller could be an excellent addition to Rodgers’ squad in January.

It was reported by the Daily Mail that Motherwell are set to hold out for a fee of around £4m and Celtic must now splash out to sign him as quickly as possible, to stop Liverpool or Rangers from beating them to his signature.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Journalist Mark Guidi recently claimed a fee of £3.5m plus add-ons would be a “bargain” for the Hoops and added that the “hot” sensation has the potential to get “hotter” in the future, suggesting that Celtic could then make a big profit further down the line.

Why Lennon Miller would be an upgrade on Reo Hatate

Rodgers should push for the board to snap the Scottish teenager up when the January transfer window opens for business because his performances in the Premiership this season have been nothing short of outstanding.

Miller only turned 18 in August and has already established himself as one of the stars in his position in the league, after playing 25 times as a 17-year-old in the division last season.

As you can see in the clip above, the teenage sensation did showcase his quality against Celtic earlier this year, spinning McGregor and providing a brilliant assist.

He used the 2023/24 campaign to settle into senior football and gain vital experience in the Premiership by playing week-in-week-out for Motherwell, and is now kicking on and thriving.

As you can see in the table above, Miller has offered a similar level of quality to Hatate in the final third, as they have both produced seven goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in the Premiership.

However, the Scottish starlet has provided far more to his team out of possession as a defensive and combative presence in the middle of the park, with 9.5 tackles, interceptions, and recoveries per game.

These statistics suggest that Miller would come in at Parkhead as an upgrade on the Japan international, by offering the same qualities at the top end of the pitch whilst being far better off the ball to protect his defence.

ICC CEO Allardice says discussions on 'to bridge the gap between women and men's prize money'

“We’re not there yet, but we’re on the journey to getting towards prize money parity”

Annesha Ghosh29-Mar-20224:42

Allardice: The tournament has been spectacular

Bringing parity in prize money for “finishing positions of teams” in women’s and men’s world tournaments will be part of the governing body’s discussions around the next eight-year cycle of women’s events, stretching from 2024 through 2031, the ICC CEO Geoff Allardice has said.Speaking from Wellington, Allardice made the assertion about a potential review of the prize money for women’s world events when asked why the winners of the ongoing 2022 women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand would take home roughly just a third of the sum won by the champions of the most recent men’s ODI World Cup, held in 2019 in England.Related

ICC doubles Women's World Cup winner's prize money to $1.32 million

“One of the things that we did at the start of the cycle,” Allardice said on Tuesday, ahead of the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, “was we projected through this event cycle – most of the ICC’s finances are done with an eight-year view – and what we’ve been trying to do over this cycle is bridge the gap between the women’s prize money and the men’s prize money.”We are about to start discussions around the next cycle and one of the starting points for that discussion is going to be trying to get parity for the finishing positions of teams in women’s events and comparable men’s events. So we’re not there yet, but we’re on the journey to getting towards prize money parity.”T20 the chosen format for inaugural U-19 women’s World Cup

The first ever Under-19 women’s World Cup, scheduled for January next year ahead of the 2023 women’s T20 World Cup, will be held in the T20 format. The host of the U-19 tournament is expected to be finalised at an ICC board meeting in a week’s time, Allardice said.

“[For] the next event cycle from 2024 to 2027, the events have been identified [and] the hosts will probably be confirmed in July,” he added. “We are seeking expressions of interest for hosting those events and we expect those submissions to come in July and a decision will be taken at our annual conference in late July.”

The ICC had doubled the prize money for the winners of eight-team 2022 women’s ODI World Cup to US$1.32 million, and brought about a 75% increase on the overall prize money pot which stands at $3.5 million, $1.5 million more than the 2017 edition, which England had won.Yet, the total prize pool of this World Cup is still $6.5m less than the $10m given away at the 10-team 2019 men’s ODI World Cup, where champions England won $4m while runners-up New Zealand took home $2m for making the final of that event. The two losing semi-finalists, Australia and India, walked away with $800,000 each.Though an expansion of the women’s ODI World Cup from an eight-team event to a 10-team one will happen only in 2029, and not in the 2025 edition, Allardice singled out the difference in the number teams in the two events as a reason behind the women’s winnings being less than the men’s.ESPNcricinfo Ltd”We’re coming from a long way back and we’re making progress in that [prize money disbursement] area,” he said. “In terms of where we’re at, I mean, the tournaments have got a different number of teams; they’re different lengths.”What we’re trying to come up with for the next cycle when we’ve got the opportunity to model out our finances [and] our prize money distribution afresh is being able to get a parity [and] that we will address the issues that you raise.”Allardice highlighted the “competitiveness” and “standard of play” in the league stage of the ongoing World Cup as a standout feature, describing them as testament to “the strides the teams have been taking forward over the last five years or so”. The growing visibility of the women’s game also reflected in the participation of eight cricketer-mothers in the tournament, by far the most at a single edition of a World Cup in at least two decades.Though some national boards have introduced bespoke maternity provisions for their women cricketers in the recent years, the lack of policy-making at the ICC level to foster participation of female cricketers during pregnancy and after childbirth remains, as highlighted by The Cricket Monthly, a talking point.Asked if the governing body is likely to initiate discussions on formulating directives to encourage pregnant players and mothers to continue their playing careers following the interest generated by cricketer-mothers in this World Cup, Allardice said, “It’s a good point your raise. It’s been a noticeable development in this competition.”Most of the changes and the accommodations that would be made would be at the national level, with the arrangements around the national team. We would make the arrangements around the tournaments here but the ability for mothers to be able to continue to play cricket and raise young families is something that I think each of the members is checking in their own way and it’s good to see the progress made in that area.”We’ve got a series of meetings at the end of this at the end of this tournament back in Dubai next week. And I’m sure that that will be one of the issues that will be raised at the debrief of this tournament.”

If not, they can only hope it is not too late.Meanwhile, Kings have alternated between Ws and Ls over their six matches so far. They have lost the toss and batted first in the last five of them, but, thanks to their mantra of all-out-attack, have still posted totals of 198, 189 and 180. This, after they had hunted down 206 to start the season. So the batting’s okay. But the bowling, apart from Rahul Chahar and Kagiso Rabada, has lacked wicket-taking menace. Arshdeep Singh has been superb at keeping the runs down at the death, but he only has two wickets across phases from 21 overs in six matches. But if Warner can see Rabada off, he will enjoy facing Chahar and Arshdeep, against whom he strikes at 179 and 148 respectively. While Kuldeep Yadav’s resurgence has been encouraging for Capitals, his orthodox spin-bowling colleague Axar Patel has just one wicket to show from 17 overs this season. However, if Agarwal is fit and he opens the batting with Dhawan, then there is a case for Axar to bowl in the powerplay despite his having bowled only three overs in that phase in 2022. This is because he has restricted Agarwal to just 36 runs from 43 balls, does about the same to Dhawan as well (14 off 14).Stats that matter Capitals have beaten Kings in four of their last five meetings. The only time Kings won was in Dubai in 2020, where Dhawan happened to be the Player of the Match for Capitals despite being on the losing side. There have been 103 sixes hit in just six matches in Pune so far, with 129 maximums in eight games at Brabourne. This means the Wednesday’s clash moves from the venue with the highest sixes-per-match ratio to the next one on the list. £120,000-per-week Spurs outcast ready to terminate contract – report

A Tottenham Hotspur star has reportedly signalled his intention to rip up his current contract in N17 and leave as a free agent as he desperately seeks a new club, perhaps even before the January transfer window opens.

Spurs shine with emphatic win over champions

Spurs enjoyed a thumping 4-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday, which Ange Postecoglou described as “outstanding.”

While it was James Maddison who stole the headlines on the night thanks to his superb brace, it was Spurs’ defensive duo of Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin that impressed Big Ange the most.

The pair, who are standing in for injured first-choices Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, were heavily criticised after Tottenham’s recent 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray in the Europa League.

Against City, however, they both made strong cases to keep their places in the team.

Guglielmo Vicario and Radu Dragusin celebrate for Tottenham

“I thought they were all great,” Postecoglou said after the win when asked about the pair’s performances.”You have to be against City because obviously they’ve got big Erling [Haaland] up there, but the way they deliver the ball, the areas they consistently probe, you’ve got to be focused the whole time and I thought Ben and Radu were really focused.

“I think when you play City, you can’t rely on individuals to find solutions out there and collectively, I thought we defended really well.”

Spurs outcast wants out

Spurs’ defence has been vital to their good form this season. The Lilywhites are currently sixth in the Premier League, three points behind third-placed Chelsea, and have conceded just 13 goals in 12 games. Only three teams – Liverpool, Arsenal, and Newcastle United – have conceded fewer.

Though Postecoglou has mostly started with a back four of Destiny Udogie, Romero, Van de Ven and Pedro Porro, he’s also given minutes to Davies, Dragusin, Archie Gray and Djed Spence. One man who hasn’t had a sniff, however, is Sergio Reguilon.

Serge Reguilon in action for Tottenham.

The Spain international has been selected by Postecoglou for one matchday squad this season, that being in a 3-2 EFL Cup third-round win over Coventry City back in September, where he was an unused substitute.

Amid his lack of game time, Reguilon is now, according to the Sunday Mirror (via Football.london), ready to terminate his Tottenham contract in order to force a move away from north London in January.

The Mirror reports that Reguilon, who reportedly earns £120,000 per week at Spurs, wants the club to agree to a mutual contract termination amid interest from clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Reguilon joined Tottenham from Real Madrid for a fee of £25 million in the summer of 2020. Though he enjoyed a decent first two years in England, he’s since been an outcast at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, spending the last two years out on loan with Sevilla, Manchester United and Brentford.

"Sensational" Arsenal player’s adviser is pushing for him to go in January

A “sensational” Arsenal player close adviser is apparently pushing for him to leave the club in January, with the winter transfer window soon upon us, as reports begin to heat up surrounding both potential incomings and outgoings at the Emirates.

Players who are most likely to leave Arsenal in January

Despite Mikel Arterta being forced to deal with a host of injury problems so far this campaign, which has already threatened to extinguish their bid to win a first Premier League title in 21 years, there are suggestions that first-team squad members could depart north London as early as next month.

Left-back Kieran Tierney, after recovering from a hamstring injury which kept him sidelined since Euro 2024, has been re-introduced to the first-team squad by Arteta – with the Spaniard confirming that he could hand the former Celtic star for his first senior appearance since the 2023 Community Shield final.

“He is ready, he’s training really well and he’s going to have an opportunity for sure,” said Arteta on playing Tierney.

“The way the team is looking at the moment, he is going to do that for that reason and because he’s earned it. The way he’s behaved, the way he’s been with us because he’s willing to do it and when that happens, you have to give those opportunities to players.”

Tierney has been an unused substitute in all of Arsenal’s last five games in all competitions, first making his way back on to the bench for their 5-1 win away to Sporting Lisbon at the end of last month, but this certainly isn’t an indication he won’t be going anywhere in January.

Reliable journalist Charles Watts stated that Tierney is likely to leave Arsenal when the window reopens, and the plan was always to ease him back into the first team in a bid to attract potential suitors.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

“He has been included in Arsenal’s Premier League squad for the season so he could play once fit, but I struggle to really see that happening,” said Watts, who also claimed Tierney is not in Arteta’s long-term plans.

“He will hope to get a move in January, probably on loan.”

Meanwhile, despite starting in each of the club’s last three games in all competitions, Poland international Jakub Kiwior continues to be heavily linked with a move back to Italy.

Jakub Kiwior's agent pushing for him to leave Arsenal in January

The 24-year-old has done well to fill in for the injured Gabriel Magalhaes lately, helping to shut out both Man United and AS Monaco alongside William Saliba, but there is a belief among the Italian press that Arsenal are prepared to sell Kiwior outright next month – amid interest from Napoli.

Now, newspaper Il Mattino (via Gooner Talk) has provided another update, and they write that Kiwior’s agent is pushing for him to leave Arsenal in January – with the player’s representative eager to secure a move away for the defender.

Jakub Kiwior for Arsenal

Once Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko return to the fold, you can make a case that the former Spezia starlet will once again be confined to Arteta’s bench for the foreseeable, so you can see why those close to Kiwior are in favour of him quitting N5.

However, from Arsenal’s perspective, it would be very risky to let the “sensational talent” leave when injuries have been such a reoccurring theme of their campaign.
