He’s a bit like Kulusevski: Spurs in the hunt to sign £30m "superstar"

At this point, even the most optimistic of Tottenham Hotspur fans would likely admit that this season has been a disaster.

Ange Postecoglou has led his side to the club’s worst start to a season in the last decade, and unfortunately for the Australian, it’s not particularly close either.

The North Londoners currently sit 15th in the Premier League with a meagre points haul of just 24, and the only positives are that they remain in three cup competitions, the development of their youngsters and the evolution of Dejan Kulusevski.

The 24-year-old has, for the most part, been Spurs’ best player this season and shown that he must be the centrepiece of Postecoglou’s rebuild over the next few years, so recent reports touting a Champions League-winning player compared to the Swede for a move to the club should excite fans.

Tottenham target Premier League star

According to a recent report from Spain, Tottenham are one of several sides keen on signing Manchester City star Jack Grealish, whom they view as someone who could add quality and versatility to the attack.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that German giants Borussia Dortmund and Italian royalty Inter Milan are also interested in landing the English attacker this month, which could complicate things.

How much the 29-year-old might cost the interested parties is not established in the story, but given his diminishing importance to the Premier League champions, the estimation of £30m from Football Transfers does not seem too unrealistic.

It could be a complicated transfer to get over the line, and the fans might not be behind it right away, but we’ve seen what Grealish can do when given a chance to express himself, and in a Postecoglou system, he could get back to something like that, and the fact he’s been compared to Kulusevksi can only help.

How Grealish compares to Kulusevski and why Spurs should sign him

So, before we look at a couple of the reasons Spurs might want to sign Grealish this month, let’s examine this comparison to Kulusevski and where it’s come from.

In this case, it primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in the Premier League this season, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the Englishman is the sixth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Swedish dynamo.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots on target, expected and actual assists, shot and goal-creating actions and more, all per 90.

On top of the statistical similarities between the pair, they also share the ability to play in midfield or on the wing, depending on what their manager and team need from them, which is just one of the other reasons the Lilywhites might want to sign the City ace.

With that said, his lacklustre form this season, which has seen him rack up just five goal involvements in 21 games, cannot be ignored, but it also cannot be viewed in isolation and as a tool to suggest he’s not got what it takes to play for a ‘big six’ side anymore.

To see that the Champions League winner, whom Jamie Redknapp once said has “got everything,” can still make it at the top level, we only need to look at his last couple of years with boyhood club Aston Villa.

In his penultimate season with the Birmingham side, the “superstar” playmaker, as dubbed by presenter Dan Bardell, scored ten goals and provided eight assists in 41 games for the relegation-threatened side, and then did even better the following campaign, racking up seven goals and ten assists in just 27 games, which is an average of a goal involvement every 1.58 games.

Ultimately, fans might be hesitant over the potential signing of Grealish this month, but if the ultra-aggressive Postecoglou can take the shackles off and get him back to his silky best, then Spurs will have a sensational footballer on their hands.

Leeds could sign dream Firpo replacement in swoop for "pacey" £15k-p/w star

The January transfer window has been open for over two weeks and Leeds United have yet to dip into the market to bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the season.

They will remain at the top of the Championship table if they beat Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road on Sunday, which means that they are in a very good position in the league as it stands.

However, Daniel Farke may still want to add to his options across the pitch by bringing in more quality to help with the promotion push in the months to come.

LeedsUnitedmanagerDaniel Farke celebrates after the match

Leeds must also consider that some players may need to be replaced, whether that is this month or in the summer, with Junior Firpo one of the stars out of contract at the end of the season.

Junior Firpo's form this season

The former Barcelona defender, who is currently out through injury, has been the go-to left-back for Farke when fit, starting all 15 of his appearances in the Championship this term.

There is not any news currently out there to suggest that he is close to signing a new contract, but it has not been confirmed that the defender will be moving on from Elland Road in the summer, which means that his future is up in the air.

Junior Firpo

Firpo has provided one goal and three assists from left-back in his 15 appearances, to go along with 3.8 tackles and interceptions combined per match.

This shows that he offers an attacking threat going forward from his defensive positions, whilst also being able to get back in to make challenges to win the ball back for his side.

Farke and Leeds could, though, sign a dream replacement for him by moving for reported transfer target Bali Mumba, who they are said to have sent scouts to watch this season.

Why Bali Mumba would be a dream Junior Firpo replacement

The Pilgrims defender could come in as an excellent signing to replace Firpo if the left-back moves on from West Yorkshire at the end of his contract this summer for a number of reasons.

He would come in as a young talent, at the age of 23, with plenty of time left to develop and improve under Farke’s coaching, whilst he also worked with the German boss at Norwich City and made his Premier League debut for the manager.

Mumba has also showcased his quality in the Championship this season for Plymouth and this, along with his relationship with the Leeds coach, suggests that he could hit the ground running at Elland Road.

As you can see in the table above, the Plymouth star may not make as many tackles and interceptions per game but Firpo is dribbled past twice as many times per match, which suggests that opposition forwards find it harder to get past Mumba.

The English whiz, who was once hailed as “pacey” by Farke, also produced six goals and seven assists for the Pilgrims in the 2022/23 League One title-winning campaign, and this shows that the potential is there for him to improve his attacking output whilst playing in a dominant, promotion-chasing, side.

Overall, the £15k-per-week star, who can play at right-back or left-back, could be a dream replacement for Firpo as a young talent with experience in the Championship and the raw materials, defensively and offensively, to be a terrific option for Leeds.

Move over Nunez: 8/10 Liverpool star was the real star of the show

Liverpool continued their march towards a second Premier League title in the club’s history with a 2-0 win over Brentford away from home on Saturday.

The Reds battled hard throughout the match, against a strong Bees side, but looked to be on course for a frustrating draw until the enigmatic Darwin Nunez had his say in stoppage time.

With no Diogo Jota available, Arne Slot called upon the Uruguay international to come up with the goods off the bench, and that is exactly what he did with two strikes to win the game.

It was a terrific display from the former Benfica man, who has had his fair share of struggles in the Premier League this season, and one that could help him to kick on in the second half of the season.

Darwin Nunez's heroics against Brentford

Prior to this clash with the Bees, Nunez had scored two goals in 15 appearances in the top-flight, starting seven of those outings, which shows that he has failed to provide quality in front of goal on a regular basis.

Provide quality is exactly what the 25-year-old star did this time around, however, as he scored both of Liverpool’s goals in stoppage time to secure a big win for his side.

He was in the right place at the right time to calmly slot the ball into the back of the net from six yards out for the first, before showcasing his composure and ball-striking ability for the second – taking a touch and rifling an effort into the roof of the net.

Nunez, who had more shots (four) than passes made (two) off the bench, was not the real hero of the match for Slot, though, as Trent Alexander-Arnold was the true star of the game for Liverpool.

Why Trent Alexander-Arnold was the real hero

Whilst the Uruguayan striker deserves plenty of plaudits for his match-winning contributions off the bench, the England international played the full 90 minutes and contributed to the win with his work on and off the ball.

Trent

The right-back provided quality in and out of possession for the Reds and was key to keeping a clean sheet against Thomas Frank’s side, as he made one tackle and two interceptions and was not dribbled past a single time by an opposition player.

Alexander-Arnold, who received a rating of 8/10 from The Express for his performance, put in a fantastic defensive display that was coupled with creative quality on the ball.

As you can see in the table above, the 26-year-old sensation created five chances for his teammates throughout the game, the last of which was finally converted by Nunez for the opening goal.

Alexander-Arnold made a smart run into the right channel inside the box and then pulled the ball across the box, brilliantly, for the striker to tap in from close range.

The English dynamo, therefore, was crucial to the clean sheet and vital to the goal that ultimately broke the deadlock and won the match with his cross for Nunez, which is why he was the real hero for Slot, as his all-round performance played a massive role in the victory.

Sam Northeast cracks 410* as Glamorgan seal unlikely win

Ninth-highest first-class innings of all time sees Leicestershire lose despite posting 584

ECB Reporters Network23-Jul-2022

Sam Northeast steers into the off side•Getty Images

Sam Northeast made an unbeaten quadruple-century before Glamorgan pulled off an astonishing victory on an extraordinary day of records in the LV= Insurance County Championship at the Uptonsteel County Ground in Leicester.Spectators at Leicestershire’s Grace Road headquarters had witnessed one of English cricket’s three greatest feats of batting as Northeast finished with a monumental 410 not out in a total of 795 for 5 declared in reply to Leicestershire’s first-innings 584.Then to cap it all Glamorgan dismissed their opponents for 183 in 59.4 overs to win by an innings and 28 runs. The victory – which lifts Glamorgan to second place in Division Two – capped an amazing day in which Northeast joined Brian Lara, Archie MacLaren and Graeme Hick as one of only four players in the first-class game in England to score more than 400 runs in an innings. The Leicestershire total of 584 is the highest in county cricket by a team that subsequently lost by an innings – smashing the previous mark of 527 scored in an innings defeat against Northamptonshire in 1995 – and is thought to be the highest in first-class cricket to suffer that fate anywhere in the world.Glamorgan’s coach, Matt Maynard, said: “To have a man, Sam Northeast, in your side who has joined only nine other players to have scored more than 400 in an innings is incredible. It was a remarkable feat and he batted selflessly as well, when we needed to up the scoring rate.”A lot of things go into a score like that. You have to maintain a high level of concentration but he never seemed to deviate from his plans until right at the end, when he started to be more aggressive.”I don’t think anyone here will have witnessed a better innings. The way he went from 200 to 300 on Friday, it was as if there were no fielders. Every attacking shot he played went for four. I’ve seen some good players, I’ve batted with some good players, but to see someone maintain that level for so long was just incredible.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Glamorgan won after declaring with a lead of 211 at lunch on the final day. They scored a breathtaking 232 runs in the pre-lunch session, a rate of scoring that left Leicestershire with 65 overs to survive – a task that proved beyond them as Michael Hogan (4 for 43) and Michael Neser (3 for 60) combined with spinner Andrew Salter (2 for 36) and James Harris (1 for 27) to blow them away.Northeast, who had never during his 16-year career imagined making 300 until he did so on Friday, now possesses the ninth-highest individual score in world cricket, behind only Lara’s all-time high of 501 not out for Warwickshire at Edgbaston in 1994 and MacLaren’s 424 for Lancashire at Taunton in 1895 as the third highest in England. Hick’s 405 not out for Worcestershire, also at Taunton in 1988 is nudged down to fourth place.Northeast numbered 45 fours and three sixes, sharing an unbroken stand of 461 in 71.3 overs with wicketkeeper Chris Cooke, who finished unbeaten on 191 – by coincidence Northeast’s career-best before this game. The stand was the eighth-highest partnership in County Championship history and, as far as a sixth-wicket stand was concerned, it was the highest ever recorded in English first-class record and the second highest in history. It was also a record total for Glamorgan, whose total is the ninth highest ever made in the county championship.Leicestershire will not need reminding that Cooke was dropped on just 3 and again on 15 on Friday – both comfortable catching chances – or that they missed Northeast at slip on 96.That error, one of only a handful in the entire marathon innings, seemed a distant memory as Northeast led the players off at lunch with almost every spectator on their feet prior to Glamorgan’s declaration after a morning session that saw 232 runs scored and a string of records set.

Northeast eclipsed Steve James’s 309 not out as the highest score by a Glamorgan player and replaced Kevin Pieterson’s 355 not out for Surrey at The Kia Oval in 2015 as the highest individual score against Leicestershire.Glamorgan passed their highest previous total – 718 for 3 declared in the James match at Colwyn Bay – and the partnership overtook the unbroken 425 by Adrian Dale and Viv Richards against Middlesex in Cardiff in 1993 as the Glamorgan record for any wicket.Cooke completed his hundred off 161 balls, having hit 12 of his 19 fours to reach that mark, later adding three sixes in what would be the second highest score of his career, behind his unbeaten 205 against Surrey last season.Northeast, by nature a classical strokeplayer, reached the cusp of passing 400 having allowed himself the liberty of just one six. Only in the last over before lunch, presumably aware that it would be the last of the innings, did he throw caution to the wind.Related

It paid off as he whacked Roman Walker over long-on for six to go to 402 and a place in the top 10 highest scores of all time, followed by another over long-off to move up another notch by taking down Hick’s 405.Leicestershire looked downcast in the field for much of the morning and misfielded several times on a parched and bumpy outfield.Glamorgan’s declaration at 211 in front gave them 65 overs to conjure a result and arrived sooner than they had expected, according to Maynard. “The original plan had been to bat on after lunch. But we just scored so quickly that we had the 210-lead at lunch that we thought would take us until 20 minutes or so afterwards. I thought it was perhaps a one in 30 chance of winning.”The pitch was still offering precious little help to the bowlers. But Salter dismissed Rishi Patel and Lewis Hill after Hogan had removed opener Louis Kimber via a fine catch by Northeast at second slip. When Hogan had Colin Ackerman and Joey Evison caught behind in the same over, Glamorgan sensed an opportunity with Leicestershire five down, still 83 behind and 27 overs remaining.Wiaan Mulder and Harry Swindells put on 42 over the next 14 overs, which seemed to tip the balance towards Leicestershire surviving, only for the momentum to swing back Glamorgan’s way as Neser dismissed Swindells and Ben Mike in the space of three balls, both leg-before.A fine catch at cover by Kiran Carlson accounted for Walker as Harris claimed a wicket before Hogan found some away movement from a ball 56 overs old to have Mulder caught behind and Neser produced a perfect yorker to bowl Wright to finish the match.

Barcelona now in contact for £75,000-a-week Aston Villa star Jhon Duran

With the January transfer window well and truly underway, Aston Villa are reportedly in danger of losing one of Unai Emery’s star men amid Barcelona’s recent contact.

Aston Villa transfer news

It’s a big month for the Villans and their Champions League ambitions. On the pitch, they’ve struggled to hit top form under Emery but managed to secure all-important results nonetheless. Losing once in their last four games in a run that includes a 2-1 defeat of Manchester City, it was Leon Bailey’s first goal of the season which put those at Villa Park in high spirits once again against Leicester City last time out.

The winger’s goal comes at a good time too, given how his place is at risk amid reports that Aston Villa are chasing the signature of Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen this month. A sudden return to form could instantly save Villa plenty of money and put Emery’s side back on course to qualify for European football for the second season running.

Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen celebrates

It’s not just incomings that the Midlands club have to worry about, however. According to Sport in Spain, Barcelona have now made contact with Jhon Duran’s representatives over securing his signature as soon as this month as their failure to register Dani Olmo threatens to derail an otherwise solid first season under Hansi Flick.

Often forced to settle for a place on Emery’s bench, it will be interesting to see whether Duran will be able to resist Barcelona’s potential pursuit and if the La Liga giants will even have the funds to welcome such a player from a fellow Champions League side this month.

The £75,000-a-week forward is certainly one to watch, with his performances pushing him beyond a substitute’s role throughout the current campaign.

"Special" Duran has big decision to make

There has been no greater headache for Emery this season than the decision to start one of Ollie Watkins or Duran. The former has enjoyed a solid campaign and it could be argued that his work off the ball is better than his competition, but there’s also no denying the pure goalscoring ability of the latter, who will not want to settle for a place on the bench forever.

What is currently a luxury for those at Villa Park could quickly become a problem and there’s no doubt that Duran has quite the decision to make, particularly if Barcelona come calling this month.

The numbers build Duran’s case for a starting spot even further, with seven goals to his name despite making just four Premier League starts all season. Emery is certainly aware of that quality though, having praised his forward in abundance since his arrival.

Speaking after Duran’s brace against Liverpool last season, Emery told reporters as relayed by beIN Sports: “Jhon Duran is a special player. We have to try and help him. He is a good guy, and he needs a team behind him. He is getting our demands better. He was very clinical and today was important for him.”

Plenty of 'fire in the belly' for Devine, brushes aside 'swansong' idea

Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine believe they still have a big role to play in overseeing a period of “massive change” for New Zealand as they build for the future, insisting there’s still plenty of “fire in the belly” and that the Commonwealth Games isn’t pencilled in as their swansong. It’s not often a major tournament represents a new beginning, rather than the end of a cycle, but with Birmingham 2022 coming less than five months after the ODI World Cup, teams have had a fresh look as focus shifts towards next year’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.New Zealand perhaps have epitomised that even more than most. A shock contract snub for Amy Satterthwaite led to her international retirement, while her wife, Lea Tahuhu was also omitted. Their XI for their Commonwealth Games opener against South Africa featured three debutants – Izzy Gaze, an 18-year-old wicketkeeper taking on the gloves from the retired Katey Martin, 20-year-old offspinner Eden Carson, and 18-year-old left-arm spinner Fran Jonas.Related

  • Smriti Mandhana rises to third spot on batting rankings

  • 'Been a bit of a rollercoaster' – Tahuhu hopes to put low phase behind after unexpected CWG call-up

  • Bates' 91*, Devine's all-round show give New Zealand winning start

But it was the experienced heads that saw New Zealand to victory. Bates blitzed an unbeaten 91 at the top of the order, her first T20I half-century since 2019, while Devine put on an all-round show, scoring 48 with the bat before taking 3 for 37 to become the first New Zealand woman to reach 100 T20I wickets. Devine laughed off suggestions the end is nigh for her international career with a deadpan response.”Are you telling me I should retire? I’m just joking,” she said following the match. “I wanted to get to the home World Cup earlier this year, and I was going to reassess [after], but I certainly have got a lot of fire in the belly still.”And especially with some younger girls still around, I feel like I’ve got a role to play in helping bring them through and helping us transition in this next phase for New Zealand women’s cricket.”Devine’s T20I experience goes all the way back to 2006 when she debuted as a 17-year-old in what was the White Ferns’ second match in the format. Now, 32 and captain of the side, she is proud to oversee the integration of a new generation of teenagers into the setup.”They certainly make me feel my age, which they sort of remind me on the daily but it’s just been really nice,” Devine said of the debutants. “I think the way that they’ve come into the group, they fit in so well. I think it’s credit to the environment that we’ve created within the White Ferns that players like that can come in doesn’t matter if they’re young or old and they can feel comfortable and can perform well.”Suzie Bates brought out a number of innovative shots during the course of her 91 not out•Getty Images

Bates echoed her captain’s sentiments, adding that playing with the likes of Amelia Kerr is helping to inspire the senior players to keep at the top of the game.”We love getting together in the nets and in the middle,” Bates said of her relationship with Kerr. “And look, she inspires me to be a better player. She’s world-class, and it’s just so great having someone as good as her around the group. We know each other’s games, and we talked about what shots we were going to play. She’s a big dreamer and talks about at training how we’re going to be on the podium together.”As well as the young players keeping them on their toes, the surprise omissions of Satterthwaite and Tahuhu from the central contract list “sent some shockwaves through the whole team,” according to Bates, who is more pragmatic about how long she’s got left in the team.”For me personally, it just made me appreciate the game even more and also think about what I’m going to do after the game because you never know when it’s your time. I’ve always loved playing sport and until someone probably taps me on the shoulder and tells me it’s my time I’ll keep getting out there because you’re a long time retired. But yeah, it’s definitely made me well aware of my role in this group now as a senior player and also making sure I keep contributing.”For most cricketers at the Games, it’s their first experience of being part of a multi-sport event. Devine likened it to “being an only child for so long, and then you realise that you’ve got an adopted brother and sister or half-sister or whatever, and you have to share the limelight a little bit more.”But for Bates, this isn’t her first rodeo – she was part of New Zealand’s ‘Tall Ferns’ basketball team that competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. She reflected on how she’s matured since, approaching the Games with a much cooler head than she did as a teen.”I just remember seeing all the athletes from all over the world and just being starstruck really, wanting to get my eye on the USA basketball team and trying to get some photos of people like Roger Federer as well. Now I’m a bit older, played a bit cooler, and it’s just about making sure this team enjoys those parts of it but then making sure we perform on the field which is what we’re here to do.”Basketball 3×3 is making its debut at the Games alongside Women’s T20, and Bates is hoping to use her status as a past player to make sure she gets a ticket to check it out in her downtime.”I think we have three tickets tonight, the team plays just down the road from us in town. So I feel like it would only be fair if I got one of those tickets.”And as a former Olympian, Bates of course has high hopes for cricket’s future inclusion in the Olympic Games and the impact it could have in growing the game globally.”It’d be huge, not only for women’s cricket but for men’s cricket as well. If we can reach that global audience, the game is only going to grow further and further.”You see leagues popping up all over the world and places you perhaps never thought it would and especially for the women’s game, the more rich we can get and the more bums we get on seats, the more people watching appreciate in the sport, it’s only going to grow better. So this is another vehicle for us, and we’re inspired to make sure that we do it right.”With the 2028 Games targeted for a possible return of cricket to the Olympics, it may be a step too far for Bates and Devine. But as a mentor, Bates feels energised by their youth and is excited for the future opportunities ahead for them to play in front of an ever-growing audience for the women’s game.”I actually feel young again when you’ve got those baby-faced kids running around,” Bates said. “The debuts today, just the smiles on their faces, and for that to be their debut, that atmosphere, it probably took ten years for us to get a crowd like that when I was playing. So it’s just brilliant. And yeah, I just can’t wait to be around the group and help those players and set them up for future success.”

In the summer of 2004, Mourinho arrived in West London after guiding Porto to an unlikely Champions League triumph. He succeeded Claudio Ranieri, who had finished second in the Premier League to Arsène Wenger’s Invincibles during Roman Abramovich’s first season as club owner.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At his unveiling, Mourinho famously declared himself “a special one” – a statement that seemed prophetic. Within months, he had instilled a winning mentality in a Chelsea squad that would go on to make Premier League history. The Blues amassed 95 points, suffered only one defeat – a narrow 1-0 loss to Manchester City – and set a defensive benchmark that still stands: just 15 goals conceded over an entire season.

  • WHAT TERRY SAID

Twenty years since that historic league triumph, Terry has reignited a classic Premier League debate – insisting the iconic Blues side of 2004-05 eclipsed Arsenal’s famed “Invincibles” team.

“I don’t think there’s any comparison between Chelsea 04-05 and the Invincibles," he told "I think we were way better. We lost one game, which we should never have lost to Man City. Arsenal drew 12 games.”

Chelsea registered 10 consecutive clean sheets at one point in the season, with goalkeeper Petr Čech and defenders like Terry and Ricardo Carvalho forming an unbreakable wall at the back. When Chelsea sealed the title with a 2-0 win away at Bolton Wanderers on April 30, 2005, they had conceded only 13 goals in the league. They would let in just two more across the final three games, ending the campaign with a defensive record that has yet to be bettered.
