Man Utd now preparing move to sign "elite" UCL winner at Amorim’s request

With Manchester United looking to welcome players who would suit Ruben Amorim’s system, INEOS are now reportedly preparing a move to sign a former Champions League winner at the manager’s request.

Man Utd transfer news

Whilst Amorim has shown glimpses of what his 3-4-2-1 system is capable of in victory over Manchester City and an impressive Anfield draw against Liverpool, it’s arguably causing more problems than creating solutions so far. The current Manchester United squad, simply put, is just not equipped to play such a system.

It’s a squad which lacks wing-backs in a system which utilises that very role and a squad which arguably features just one centre-back capable of thriving in a back three in Lisandro Martinez. Meanwhile, there’s also a fairly blunt frontline which desperately needs sharpening. So, to say that there’s work to be done would be quite the understatement.

Amorim must sell Man Utd man who earns more than Dorgu & Gittens combined

Whether Manchester United have the means to complete such a transformation remains in question too. The last thing that the Red Devils need is to bump into any profit and sustainability issues when they’ve already flirted with a shock relegation battle once this season, which could yet see the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford depart.

Those sales should put those at Old Trafford in a far healthier position to pursue some much needed fresh faces of their own and that could hand Amorim a solution to his wing-back problem.

Manchester United's MarcusRashfordwarms up as a substitute during the match

According to reports in Spain, INEOS are now preparing a move to sign Achraf Hakimi for Manchester United at Amorim’s request this summer. The Paris Saint-Germain right-back played successfully as a wing-back during his time at Inter Milan, where he won the Serie A, and could now become one of the first signings of the Amorim era.

Given that his contract expires in just over a year too, there could yet be some welcomed room for negotiation in any deal to sign the experienced full-back this summer.

"Elite" Hakimi would solve Man Utd problem

A rising gem at Borussia Dortmund, Champions League winner back at Real Madrid, Serie A winner at Inter Milan and an established star at PSG, Hakimi could now tick off the final big league on the list by joining Manchester United. And given that he wins almost everywhere he goes, the Red Devils could be in for quite a ride if he does put pen to paper in the summer.

PSG boss Luis Enrique has been among those to praise the 26-year-old Moroccon this season, telling reporters as relayed by Morocco World News: “He’s becoming more well-rounded, especially on the defensive side.

“Hakimi is an elite player with vast experience and serves as a reference for his teammates. I think he’s more mature compared to last season, and that reflects his development.”

The Spaniard’s praise suggests that Hakimi is at the peak of his powers, making now the best time for Manchester United to move in on their reported target. If Amorim is looking to solve his wing-back problem, then signing a player who’s operated among the elite in that very role would certainly be an intelligent move.

Everton eyeing move for £100k-p/w starlet who can be better than KDH

Everton manager David Moyes may have gotten off to the worst possible start by losing the first match of his second spell in charge, but it looks like he means business in the transfer market.

The loss to Aston Villa perhaps wasn’t too much of a surprise, yet it was another game in which the Goodison Park side didn’t find the back of the net.

The Toffees are the worst team in the Premier League in terms of goals scored, netting just 15 in 20 matches this term.

Moyes is working hard to address this issue. His first signing looks increasingly likely to be Lyon youngster Ernest Nuamah, who is set to join the club for a fee in the region of €20m (£17m).

At the age of 21, he is due to arrive as a young prospect with time to develop under the Scottish boss. The question is, however, will there be more signings over the next couple of weeks?

It appears as though the 61-year-old is targeting a Chelsea outcast…

Everton eye move for Chelsea midfielder

It is no secret that Moyes is looking to raid Chelsea for his next signing, with interest being shown in both Ben Chilwell and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in recent weeks.

The manager is looking at bringing the pair to Merseyside on loan deals, giving them a lifeline ahead of the second half of the season.

A third Chelsea player, Carney Chukwuemeka, is now also being eyed up by Moyes, who wishes to bolster his midfield options significantly before the window closes, according to The Boot Room.

According to the report, the youngster is high on the list of targets, with any fee involved in his move likely going to balance what Chelsea will want to take Armando Broja back, who looks set to miss the rest of the season due to injury.

Everton could face competition for Chukwuemeka’s signature, however, as Borussia Dortmund were keen on making a move for the youngster last week.

If Moyes can convince him that Everton is the best place for him at this stage of his career, it might just be one of the best moves he makes in the transfer market, that’s for sure.

Carney Chukwuemeka has struggled at Chelsea

The Englishman burst onto the scene with Aston Villa, making his debut during the 2020/21 campaign. It was under Steven Gerrard the following season in which the midfielder began to secure more first-team opportunities.

Indeed, he made a total of 14 senior appearances for the club, and he looked like he could emerge as the next big thing out of the Villa academy.

Against Brentford at the start of that campaign, the midfielder was heavily praised by Paul Merson, who said: “He has got a bright future. First-half, he was outstanding. He was gliding across the pitch.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

“He will be an absolute star. He glides across the pitch. He is a nice size. He gets on the ball. He looks for it and makes runs without the ball.”

With hopes high ahead of 2022/23, Gerrard accepted a bid of £20m for Chukwuemeka from Chelsea after he was left out of Villa’s pre-season squad for a trip to Austria due to not signing a new contract.

On the surface, it looked like a wise move, especially considering his contract was set to expire at the end of the season, meaning Villa may have lost him for nothing.

Despite his extraordinary talent, it’s fair to say that his spell at Stamford Bridge hasn’t quite worked out as anticipated.

Since joining in 2022, the 21-year-old has made only 32 appearances for the Blues, scoring once and grabbing an assist, failing to gain a consistent run in the starting XI.

Enzo Maresca has a plethora of options to choose from, especially in midfield, meaning the former Villa starlet has made just five appearances all season, four coming in the Europa Conference League.

Although Moyes is eyeing up a temporary swoop for Dewsbury-Hall this month, a deal to sign Chukwuemeka surely must be the priority.

Chelsea's Carney Chukwuemeka in action

He might not have had as much game time in recent seasons, but given his age and vast potential, there is no doubt he could be better than the former Leicester City star.

Carney Chukwuemeka could be better than Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

Considering the pair have barely featured this season while spending the 2023/24 campaign in different divisions, it is fair to look back at the 2022/23 season and compare their respective performances.

In the Premier League that term, Chukwuemeka averaged a higher pass success rate (89% vs 79%) than Dewsbury-Hall, while also being dribbled past fewer times per game (0.1 vs 0.9), winning a higher percentage of total duels per game (58% vs 52%) and losing possession fewer times per game (3.1 vs 13.5).

While looking at data from a couple of years ago might not be ideal, it proves that Chukwuemeka could certainly be a wonderful signing, especially from a defensive point of view when compared to Dewsbury-Hall, by being stronger out of possession and not being as easy to dribble past – making him ideal for a relegation scrap.

The £100k-per-week starlet could use Everton as a stepping stone to revive his career after two and a half years of failing to secure regular first-team football.

If Moyes can get the youngster back to his best and exude confidence, then there is no reason why he cannot become a key member of the Toffees in their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

This transfer window might just be the most important in the club’s recent history. Around £800m has been spent on their new stadium located at Bramley-Moore Docks, where they move into next season after spending 133 years at Goodison Park.

Therefore, retaining their place in the top flight is imperative for Everton. Making the right moves this month will allow Moyes to build a squad capable of avoiding relegation and reaching the top half of the table next season.

Signing Chukwuemeka and giving him the chance to shine could be the first step in this process.

"Alarm bells" – Pundit shares Kevin Danso "concern" for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur sealed a loan deal to sign Kevin Danso from RC Lens in a last-gasp January window move, which includes a £21 million obligation to buy, but one pundit has shared a “concern” for Spurs in regard to their new arrival.

Kevin Danso set for Tottenham debut against Liverpool

With both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero ruled out of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Liverpool, and Radu Dragusin out for at least six months after sustaining ACL damage, manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Danso is set to play a role at Anfield tonight.

You couldn’t ask for a tougher debut than a baptism of fire at Anfield, with Spurs holding on to a precious 1-0 lead from the first leg of their semi-final and Postecoglou desperately looking not to concede easy chances.

“He will play,” said Postecoglou on Danso’s inclusion against Liverpool. “Whether he starts or not we will take a look because we have another game three days later and that has been our existence for quite a while now.

“You are right, Ben (Davies), Archie, Pedro (Porro) has played every minute of football we have had for the last three months, but the boys are handling it okay, and the performances are still stacking up.

“It’s great to get Kevin in. He is ready to play. Whether he starts or he comes on, we will make a decision. It’s really important he is part of it now because losing Radu was a massive blow so having him available is good.”

When asked if Danso was a reactionary signing from Spurs, given just how late it was on in the window, not to mention how they hijacked Wolves’ deal for the Austrian, Postecoglou assured supporters he’s there for the long-term.

“I don’t think we’d be signing 21-year-olds and 19-year-olds reactively,” said Postecoglou in his pre-Liverpool press conference.

“If it was reactive we’d be signing 35-year-olds. So the nature of the players signed shows they’re not just about now, they’re about us continuing to build. I certainly see Toni, Mathys and Kevin very much part of a short, medium and long-term strategy here, for sure. They’re all really good fits for what we’re doing.”

Pundit shares Kevin Danso "concern" for Tottenham

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham shared a “concern” he holds with Danso signing for Tottenham.

“Danso isn’t actually someone that I know too much about,” Wenham said. “However, I do think to myself that he is 26, he’s been playing in the French league for a long time, and none of the other clubs have touched him.

“Some of these scouts have been on extensive missions in France scouting the likes of William Saliba, Wesley Fofana and Leny Yoro. However, nobody has picked up on Danso before. As a result, that is a bit of a concern for me.

“I hope I’m wrong, and he comes in and smashes it. However, that does ring some alarm bells for me.”

While the 26-year-old didn’t quite make it at Southampton, his Ligue 1 form for Lens shows exactly why Tottenham brought him to N17.

According to WhoScored, Danso stood out as Lens’ second-best performer before making the switch to Spurs, all while making more clearances and blocks per 90 than any other player in Lens’ squad. The defender also won more aerial duels per 90 than any of his former teammates in that time.

Fatigued Sri Lanka look to dig deep against well-drilled New Zealand

A fit-again Daryl Mitchell is likely to return, in place of Mark Chapman, for New Zealand

Tim Southee: On the day everyone poses different threats

Big picture
Fatigue-wise, New Zealand have had a kind start to the tournament. They thrashed Australia in Sydney, then took the short flight to Melbourne, where their match against Afghanistan was rained out without a ball being bowled. They’d have preferred to play that match, of course, but they’ve not had to contend with crazy schedules or serious changes in timezone.Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have been whipped around, and they arrive in Sydney in some disarray. They’d started their campaign in Geelong, in the qualifiers, and have since lost no fewer than three fast bowlers to injury. Then three days after the qualifiers ended, they were playing a match in Hobart. Two days after that they played Australia in Perth. Now they’ve been shot back across the breadth of the continent to Sydney. Within the side, there seems to be a little consternation about their schedule, by the way. Their next match, on Tuesday, is in Brisbane. Then they come back to Sydney.Related

Sri Lanka replace injured Binura with Asitha

Sri Lanka tend to find grievance in high-profile assignments, however, but perhaps more importantly, they have a history of weaponising that grievance, to blast their way to good results. Test tours of South Africa in 2019, England in 2014, the T20 World Cup in 2014, and of course the big one – the 1996 World Cup – are some examples. But here they are up against a side that seems much-better drilled, and way more settled than they are.Out of 13 completed matches this year, New Zealand have lost only three. They have a nuclear top order, good firepower through the middle, and a top-class seam attack for Australian conditions. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are getting by on top-order runs without the middle order really contributing, and their attack looks more vulnerable following Tuesday’s loss to Australia.Sri Lanka have to dig deep and find a new gear to overcome their cricketing, and fatigue-related circumstances. That the likes of Trent Boult, Tim Southee, and Lockie Ferguson are good at turning it on is known, but don’t sleep on Mitchell Santner, who has put up some impressive stats this year. Perth’s bouncier pitch didn’t quite suit his bowling but Sydney, where Sri Lanka’s spinners have done well in the past, may suit him nicely. It’s rare that he has two bad games in a row.Pitch and conditions
Thankfully, after two rained-out games on Friday, the forecast looks good in Sydney. Pathum Nissanka is the fourth-highest run-scorer in T20Is this year, with 636 from 21 innings. But those runs have come at a strike rate of only 111. Sri Lanka have been one of Santner’s favourite opponents in the past. He has taken seven wickets against them in five matches at a strike rate of 6.26.

Sky Sports journalist drops live TV Mathys Tel to Tottenham transfer update

Tottenham Hotspur have now received a major update on their pursuit of Bayern Munich attacker Mathys Tel, with Sky Sports sharing breaking news live on air during their deadline day coverage.

Spurs chasing Mathys Tel

Tottenham have been attempting to make multiple additions to their squad in the final days of the winter transfer window, and one of their attacking targets has emerged as Tel.

Daniel Levy even travelled to hold talks over a deal for the 19-year-old just a few days ago, but the move was held up by the player’s initial reluctance to move to north London.

Levy was unsuccessful in his attempt to convince the forward, however, which led the Lilywhites to start assessing their options, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface.

There has now been a promising new update on Spurs’ pursuit of Tel, however, with Sky Sports revealing he has now changed his mind and is now willing to make the move.

Fabrizio Romano has since shared an image of the Frenchman on a flight to London with his agent, while also revealing the deal is set to be a straight loan until the end of the season.

Huge twist on deadline day

Florian Plettenberg has described the development as an “incredible twist”, given that the starlet seemed to have decided against a move to north London, and the reporter has now explained why he ultimately changed his mind.

“He has reconsidered his decision. He was in talks with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. I’m convinced that in the end Spurs have presented the best project in order to get match practice. This is the most important for Tel.

“Now it’s up to Postecoglou to place him in the right position. He’s not a winger, he’s a striker. Let him strike, let him score goals!”

Mathys Tel

The Sky journalist has lauded the Bayern ace as “unbelievable”, and there are plenty of signs he could be a fantastic addition to Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

Although game time has been limited last season, the teenager amassed 12 goal contributions in 30 Bundesliga games last term, and he has showcased his versatility by playing on both wings and at striker.

Having picked up an impressive win at Brentford yesterday, and strengthened their squad considerably in the latter stages of the transfer window, Tottenham will now be hoping they can get their season back on track and start moving up the Premier League table.

Chinelle Henry's new-ball burst helps West Indies defend 115

A spirited bowling show helped West Indies edge New Zealand out by a run in the first of five T20Is in North Sound. In a low-scoring match, it was Chinelle Henry’s new-ball spell that proved decisive as the hosts staved off the Hannah Rowe threat in the final over.Chasing a mere 116, New Zealand needed an unlikely 20 from the last over with just one wicket left. Rowe attacked Aaliyah Alleyne with a four off the first ball but with 12 needed from the final two deliveries, she could manage only a four and six.Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates had started New Zealand’s chase with a four each in the opening over, bowled by Alleyne. But in the third over, Henry trapped Bates lbw for 5. Devine then lofted the seamer over wide long-on for a six but Henry had her caught at mid-on in her next over. In between, Hayley Matthews had Georgia Plimmer holing out to long-on.Aaliyah Alleyne scored 49 off 37 balls after coming in at No. 3•Cricket West Indies

Henry was in the thick of it again when she brilliantly caught Amelia Kerr off her own bowling and then saw Maddy Green run out two balls later. After being reduced to 46 for 5 in seven overs, New Zealand could not recover as spinners Matthews, Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher further applied the squeeze.Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and put West Indies in, in their first T20I since Deandra Dottin’s shock retirement last month. Matthews walked out to open with wicketkeeper-batter Natasha McLean, who was playing a T20I after two years. However, it was a short stay for McLean, with left-arm spinner Fran Jonas dismissing her for a first-ball duck. Batting at No. 3, Alleyne then stitched a 66-run stand in 55 balls with Matthews in. The pair was happy to see off Jonas with minimum fuss and attack the seamers, Rowe and Lea Tahuhu.Kerr’s, though, hampered West Indies’ progress by sending back Matthews and Alleyne in back-to-back overs. West Indies lost their last six wickets in 31 runs – three of those wickets came in the form of run-outs – as they were bowled out for 115.Their bowlers, though, ensured it was just enough to register a win.”The coaches told us to go out there and be fearless,” Henry said after the game. “We wanted more than 115 but that didn’t happen, so we went out there as a bowling unit to get the job done. Going into the second game, we’re obviously looking to improve in both batting and bowling. To see Aaliyah going out at No. 3 and almost getting her maiden T20I half-century showed that we have a lot of depth in the squad, so it’s just for us to keep up that team performance.”

£111m wasted: Chelsea need to offload Blues flop who earns more than Palmer

With Chelsea’s heavy spending under Todd Boehly after his takeover back in 2022, it was always unlikely that every signing would be a success, with numerous of the American’s additions not going as he would’ve planned.

Raheem Sterling was one of his first big-money signings, moving in a £45m deal from Manchester City back in the summer of 2022 with expectations of transforming the club’s forward line.

However, the move for the experienced England international has been nothing short of a disaster, scoring just 19 times in 81 appearances, becoming the club’s highest-paid player at one stage.

Robert Sanchez is just another addition who’s failed to reach the levels expected after his move from Brighton, proving to be a constant source of errors as seen against Manchester City a couple of weeks ago.

The same can’t be said for one player who’s massively caught the eye in the Premier League for the Blues, looking to be worth every penny of the fee splashed out for his signature.

Cole Palmer’s stats for Chelsea since joining

After looking as though he was set for a loan move to Burnley, Chelsea decided to fork out £40m for the signature of Manchester City winger Cole Palmer in the summer of 2023.

Not many people would’ve known what to expect from the youngster, but it’s safe to say he’s exceeded beyond the wildest imagination of any supporter – being the go-to man for action in front of goal over the last two seasons.

Cole Palmer for Chelsea

The 22-year-old registered 25 goals and 15 assists during his debut season in West London, the most of any player, helping secure the club a place in the Europa Conference League.

This season, the talented star has continued his trend of being the star man in attacking areas under Enzo Maresca, notching 14 goals and six assists in his 27 appearances – helping the club challenge for a Champions League spot.

Despite his superb form since his move, he still earns a whole heap less than one player who pockets a small fortune whilst providing little to no positive impact for the Blues.

The player who earns more than Palmer at Chelsea

After joining the club for a reported £71.6m in the summer of 2018, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga arrived with high expectations of being a star for Chelsea after costing a world-record sum for a player in his position.

In total, he’s made 163 appearances for the club since his arrival, before joining Real Madrid on loan last summer for the 2023/24 campaign – before linking up with Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth side on loan for the entirety of this season.

He’s made 17 appearances for the Cherries in their unexpected push for a European spot, keeping five clean sheets – averaging 3.7 saves per 90 down on the South Coast in 2024/25.

However, the 30-year-old still remains a Blues player after only leaving on a temporary basis, having 18 months left on his current deal as things stand.

Despite his impressive form away from the club, Maresca should look to permanently sell the Spaniard in the summer, especially when taking his extortionate earnings into account.

According to Capology, Kepa earns a mammoth £150k-per-week, which sees him take home £7.8m a year – earning a whopping £39m in wages alone during his time at the club, not including loan spells away from the club.

When coupled with his hefty transfer fee, he’s cost the club a staggering £111m, a huge waste of money given his lack of impact, with his last impression undoubtedly being his penalty shootout antics which have seen him refuse to be substituted whilst also missing a crucial spot-kick.

Kepa, who’s previously been dubbed “shocking” by one social media star, also earns more than current first-team star Palmer, who only earns £130k-per-week despite his impressive form, with the goalkeeper currently earning £20k-per-week more.

Given the amount spent on the shot-stopper, there’s no denying that the club need to part ways with him this summer, as he heads into the final year of his contract.

Undoubtedly, the goalkeeping situation is still an issue for Maresca, but Kepa simply isn’t the answer, needing to offload him to raise funds and invest in a new number one ahead of 2025/26.
