Southee admits NZ bowlers 'did not apply pressure long enough'

“There’s many things you can look back on and as a side, you’re just looking to improve and learn from this”

Lack of batting partnerships and accurate bowling for long periods brought New Zealand’s downfall in Sylhet, according to their captain Tim Southee, after the visitors went down by 150 runs for their first Test defeat in Bangladesh. The two sides went toe-to-toe at the end of their respective first innings, but the home side pulled ahead with a strong performance in the third innings, before bowling out New Zealand for 181 on the fifth morning.Southee said that Bangladesh were accurate for longer periods and praised his opposite number Najmul Hossain Shanto for striking an opportune century.Related

“You look at the way that the Bangladesh bowlers were able to apply pressure for a long period of time. I think we did it in periods, but we probably didn’t do it for long enough,” Southee said.”You are always looking at partnerships as a batting unit. I think Shanto played a great innings. It was obviously a very timely one as well, given the situation of the game. There’s many things you can look back on and as a side, you’re just looking to improve and hopefully, learn from this and move forward in a few days.”I think the Bangladesh bowlers bowled well, and very accurate, and in the way they bowl and the style they bowl, we know that in this part of the world, it tends to get harder to bat as the Test moves on. It tends to take a little bit more turn and a little bit more variable bounce. You just need a couple of partnerships.”Southee insisted that New Zealand chose the best playing XI in Sylhet as the likes of Kyle Jamieson, Ajaz Patel and Ish Sodhi have been performing well recently, especially in the subcontinent.”You look at the conditions and you look at the squad you’ve got, and you pick your best XI. You look at the bowling group and KJ (Kyle Jamieson) has been a phenomenal performer for us.”Ish Sodhi was the Player of the Series in the last series that he played, and AJ (Ajaz Patel) has been a great bowler for us in this part of the world. I think you look at it at the start of the Test, and you pick your strongest side, which you think is going to win you the game.”New Zealand also batted at a slower pace than Bangladesh, which many felt bogged them down in pressure situations. Southee defended his batters’ style of play compared to Bangladesh’s attacking mantra.”I think it comes back to the nature of the play. I think Kane Williamson likes to absorb pressure in different ways to someone like Darryl Mitchell.”I think it’s about trusting your own style and the only way you go about it. If you look at Shanto’s method, it is different to someone like Mominul’s. So it’s about how you go about it and trusting your way,” he said.Southee, however, said that tiredness wasn’t a factor in New Zealand’s performance in Sylhet.”There’s been a number of fresh guys coming in. Three or four of them have been playing domestic cricket. We had a little bit of a break after the World Cup. I think as players, you know that it’s a busy schedule. You know what’s in front of you.”You’re trying to freshen up as well as you can. The guys were in good spirits before this. It’s been a long time on the road for some but that’s part and parcel of being an international cricketer.”

Tigers book playoff spot; Abu Dhabi sign off with win to deny Bulls

A round-up of the Abu Dhabi T10 matches on December 7, 2023

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Dec-2023Impactful cameos from Dasun Shanaka and Kusal Mendis boosted Bangla Tigers to a huge total of 126 paving the way for a 27-run win against Chennai Braves. The victory sealed a playoff spot for Tigers, who will face Deccan Gladiators in the eliminator on Friday.Charith Asalanka slammed a half-century in response, but only two batters reached double figures for Braves, with Asalanka smashing 55 out of their total of 99 during the run chase. At 61 for 5 in the eighth over, they had little chance of eclipsing Tigers, who were shown the way by Shanaka’s 34 off 15 balls, and Mendis’ 32 from 15. They combined to add 55 for the fourth wicket after Tigers were 44 for 3, but it was Benny Howell’s defining contribution that made a difference. He faced three balls, two of which went for sixes and the other for four, ending unbeaten on 16.Tigers’ win made them No. 4 on the points table, behind third-placed Deccan Gladiators only on net run rate.Team Abu Dhabi finally signed off the tournament with a win, as their last-ball victory also dashed Delhi Bulls’ hopes of making the playoffs.Chasing 98, Abu Dhabi got off to a flyer as Kyle Mayers and Tom Banton added 52 in just 4.2 overs, with Mayers doing the bulk of the scoring, including four sixes off an over from Richard Gleeson. Banton came off retired hurt, but such was Mayers’ carnage, that Abu Dhabi had the chase fully in control. With just six needed off the last over, the win seemed to be a formality, but UAE pacer Wasim Akram conceded just three runs off the first four deliveries, and most importantly, dismissed the red-hot Mayers for a 30-ball 61. The game went down to the final ball, with Abu Dhabi needing two runs to end their losing streak, and Colin Ingram would do the needful, flicking a low full-toss off the legs for four.Bulls, who needed a win to qualify for the playoffs, had earlier made 97 for 3, on the back of a 71-run stand for the third wicket between Adam Lyth and their captain Rovman Powell. While Powell was dismissed for a 20-ball 31, Lyth remained unbeaten on 39, smashing smashing two fours and three sixes, though it ultimately came in a losing cause. In a dress rehearsal for Friday’s qualifier featuring the top two teams, Samp Army eased to a six-wicket win against New York strikers and sealed the No.1 spot on the table.Strikers, batting first, failed to put together any meaningful partnerships, as Bas de Leede (3 for 13), Jake Lintott (2 for 16) and Qais Ahmad (2 for 12) struck at regular intervals to peg the team back. Niroshan Dickwella, with 18, was the team’s top scorer, as Strikers managed just four fours and two sixes in their entire innings, being bowled out for 70.Samp Army were rocked in the chase by the early dismissals of Ibrahim Zadran for a duck, and Monank Patel for 4, but Dewald Brevis wrested the advantage with an unbeaten 18-ball 31. Strikers kept chipping away, but Brevis and Moeen Ali eventually finished the chase at a canter by taking 24 runs off an over from Odean Smith, to win with 18 deliveries remaining.

Maddy Green, Suzie Bates secure series with thrilling New Zealand victory

New Zealand lost 7 for 53 in a stunning middle- and lower-order collapse, but eventually scraped home by one wicket in their chase of 221 in the second ODI against Pakistan. The victory gave New Zealand an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, after they had won the first in Queenstown by a comprehensive margin of 131 runs.Today, placed rather comfortably at 155 for 2 in the 32nd over, they required just 66 more off the remaining 110 deliveries; but Ghulam Fatima removed Suzie Bates for 74 from 91 balls to kickstart a dramatic twist. That broke a stand of 142 between Bates and Maddy Green, who hit 83 off 96 deliveries. Green also fell to Fatima four overs later. Both set batters were gone, but New Zealand still had six wickets in hand to get the required 49 runs from almost 15 overs. But Fatima struck in each of her next two overs as well, thus opening up New Zealand’s tail.Fatima got support from the other end, with each of Sadia Iqbal, Umm-e-Hani and Nashra Sandhu landing a late blow. Regular wickets piled on the pressure, but New Zealand’s last-wicket pair soaked it all up and added 13 to take them home, with No. 9 Lea Tahuhu contributing an unbeaten 21.Earlier, captain Fatima Sana led Pakistan from the front by hitting an undefeated 90 in their total of 220. They were 35 for 4 at one stage, before Sana resurrected their innings with back-to-back partnerships of 90 with Natalia Pervaiz, and 65 with Najiha Alvi. But almost all of New Zealand’s bowlers chipped in with regular wickets, with Sophie Devine leading the way with 3 for 25.Starting with Alvi’s departure in the 47th over, Pakistan themselves lost 5 for 30, with Fran Jonas getting two of those wickets. Eventually, Pakistan’s total of 220 would prove to be nearly enough but not quite.

The ban of six years will act as a strong deterrent to any participant who intends to break the rules.”Related

Jude Bellingham & Jack Grealish warned they aren't 'given enough mental health support' as ex-Premier League star defends under-fire England duo

Former Premier League star Jason McAteer has raised concerns over the mental well-being of England internationals Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish, warning that the current level of scrutiny placed on elite footballers is unsustainable without adequate psychological support. With growing public expectations and underwhelming outings in an England shirt, both players have faced a storm of negative attention in recent months.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Grealish has also endured a turbulent spell at Manchester City, especially after slipping down the pecking order following the rise of Belgian winger Jeremy Doku. The 28-year-old had previously opened up about how challenging it was to cope with the shift in his playing time under Pep Guardiola, admitting it took a toll on him mentally.

    WHAT MCATEER SAID

Speaking about the current state of the game, McAteer empathised with the burden placed on modern footballers and emphasised the urgent need for mental health support to be embedded in their daily lives, not just something addressed after their playing days are over.

“I feel sorry for some of the professional footballers now, they are under so much scrutiny. The amount of criticism they receive is ridiculous – they are burdened with an incredible amount of expectation and stress," he told

The former Liverpool midfielder, who has long championed mental health awareness, stressed the importance of proactive care.

"I’m a big mental health advocate, and if you are not cared for properly and given enough support, it can leave you scarred," he said. "As a professional footballer, you cannot wait until the end of your career to address your mental health, you have to deal with it while you are playing.

"For top professionals, internationals like Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish, they need help now and I’m not so sure they are getting enough, if any. In the 1990s when I was playing, there were no mobile phones, and no social media, so there was nowhere near as much scrutiny.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

McAteer, who featured regularly in the Premier League throughout the 1990s, believes today’s footballing environment is far more demanding mentally than the era he played in. Drawing a stark contrast between the past and present, he described how the absence of constant online scrutiny made for a more forgiving atmosphere back then.

“The 1990s saw the biggest change in football because of the money that came with the start of the Premier League," he said. "There was huge investment, commercial growth, and increase in broadcasting revenue. Then there was the cultural side of things – everyone was interested in the lifestyle of Premier League footballers – and you had all the noise around the Spice Girls, Oasis, everything was happening around that time!

"All of a sudden, footballers were mixing it with film stars and pop stars. We were getting featured in national magazines – not just football magazines, even GQ! David James was doing a photoshoot with Armani! There were massive changes in British culture – it was crazy. But would I change it for the world? Absolutely not!”
