Barcelona manager Flick has challenged wonderkid Yamal to stay grounded and continue working hard after another stunning season in Catalonia. The teenager helped the Blaugrana reclaim the La Liga title just under a year after his stunning performances powered Spain to glory at Euro 2024.

Yamal contributed nine goals and 13 assists in 35 La Liga matches during the 2024-25 season, while he also struck five times during his side's run to the Champions League semi-finals. His reputation has grown at an incredible rate and Flick is conscious of making sure Yamal is looked after while he is still a youngster.

WHAT FLICK SAID

Speaking to Barca One, Flick said: "Lamine is a genius, there's no other way to describe him, and he's only 17 years old. I think we have to help him. I hope he wants that too, that we can take care of him, because he's young and right now it seems like everything is easy. And it might seem easy, but it's not.

"If you want to play at the highest level for the next 15 years, you have to train very well and also be mentally at the highest level – that's what matters. Lamine is smart, he's intelligent, and it's not just about enjoying everything. You also have to work and work, because players with this kind of talent have to do that too."

Andy Balbirnie proud of Ireland 'character' but already looking to World Cup challenge

Ireland captain reveals James McCollum wanted to bat in protective boot to aid Andy McBrine century effort

Andrew Miller03-Jun-20230:50

McCollum would have batted if McBrine was ‘one hit away’

Andy Balbirnie, Ireland’s captain, praised the character that his team had shown in digging deep on the third and final day of the Lord’s Test, and forcing England to bat again when an innings defeat had seemed to be on the cards overnight. But, he added, Ireland’s eventual ten-wicket loss had “not been preparation” for the challenge that awaits next week at the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. The smart money had been on a swift denouement on Saturday morning, after Ireland had resumed their second innings on 97 for 3 – effectively four-down, following James McCollum’s match-ending ankle injury – and still 255 runs from asking England to bat again, following their formidable total of 524 for 4 in just 82.4 overs.Related

Balbirnie: Franchise raids on Ireland players will be 'knock-on effect of good cricket'

Lord's splendour can't hide the great Test divide

Tongue claims five-wicket haul on debut as England seal victory

But, after Harry Tector had recovered from his first-day duck to set the tone with an attractive 51, the seventh-wicket pairing of Mark Adair and Andy McBrine combined for a 163-run stand – Ireland’s highest in seven men’s Tests – that took both batters to the brink of a deserved place on the Lord’s honours boards. In the end, neither quite made it. Adair feathered an attempted ramp shot through to Jonny Bairstow for 88, while McBrine, who had insisted that McCollum didn’t risk exacerbating his injury by attempting to help him to three figures, was eventually left high and dry on 86 not out when the No. 11 Graham Hume was bowled by Stuart Broad shortly after tea.”He had the pads on, he had the boot on, it was all a bit chaotic in there,” Balbirnie said of McCollum’s potential late involvement in the innings, when it seemed he might emulate the likes of Graeme Smith and Colin Cowdrey of yesteryear, and come out to bat at nine-down in spite of his serious injury.”Andy actually came in at tea and said he doesn’t want him to bat. They’re good mates and he [McCollum] is really sore. He really didn’t want him to hobble out on the boot, but it was eventually agreed that if it was one hit away, that he would go out, and just hold up an end.”And so it was chaos. He came out on the balcony with the crutches at tea-time and a couple of members looked over and couldn’t really believe what they were seeing. It was quite entertaining.”If the shoe was on the other foot, if you’ll pardon the pun, I think Andy would have gone out for Prince [McCollum],” he continued. “But it wasn’t to be. In the end it didn’t really matter, but it was fairly chaotic at tea-time.”Nevertheless, Ireland’s doughty displays gave another healthy Lord’s crowd an entertaining day in the sun, and continued a trend of tail-end resistance from their Test team, with three of their highest partnerships in Test cricket all coming for the seventh wicket.”[The dressing-room] was a tough place to be yesterday, in the evening particularly, but we showed character today,” Balbirnie said. “We’ve showed in our Test career that we have that character – and that bouncebackability – but unfortunately for us, it’s when our backs are against the wall, that’s almost when we seem to produce our best cricket.Andy McBrine made a determined half-century•Gareth Copley/Getty Images”We need to find a way to not get so far behind the eight-ball that you need to really scrap it out. But get to 12 ahead, it’s a small win to get them batting again. And certainly, after three days like that, you have to take those small wins.”Much of the build-up to the Test had centred on Ireland’s lack of first-class experience – most of the squad hadn’t played a single first-class game in four years until their three Tests in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in April. And while Balbirnie reiterated his call for more red-ball opportunities, particularly on pitches such as Lord’s that don’t offer much sideways movement, he made it clear that a return to a white-ball focus was now the team’s over-riding priority.”I love being here and I’ve loved playing here, don’t get me wrong, but yesterday was really tough,” Balbirnie said. “You’re looking around in the change-room, wondering what we can do here to get wickets to stop the run-rate. You want to go into a game knowing that, if you play your best cricket, you can be really close to beating them. But I’m not stupid. Everyone saw there was a gap and we have to close that as quick as possible. That’s probably going to come from us playing more red-ball cricket. It’s obvious and hopefully it happens.”For now, though, Ireland have a four-day turnaround back home, before flying out to Bulawayo on Friday to begin the campaign that truly matters. Balbirnie’s men play two warm-up games against USA and Netherlands on June 13 and 15, before their World Cup qualification campaign gets underway against Oman on June 19.They then play further fixtures against Scotland, Sri Lanka and the UAE in the space of the following eight days, with the top three teams progressing to the Super Six stage, and from there a shot at securing one of the two remaining berths at the main event in India this winter. And with that fixture pile-up already on his mind, Balbirnie was blunt on the subject of his Lord’s experience. “I wouldn’t say it’s been preparation,” he said. “I’ve played in these tournaments before. It’s really cut-throat. If you don’t turn up for a couple of games, your qualifying tournament is over. So the guys need to be switched on, and I think they will be by the time we get out there.”It’s 9am starts, very early-morning stuff, the games are thick and fast, in a sporadic sort of a schedule. I’ve struggled over the years to differentiate between our [Test and white-ball] groups because it’s many of the same names, but for the one-day team, next week is huge. I said at the start of my tenure that qualifying for that World Cup will be my greatest achievement as captain, and we’ve got three weeks to try to do that.”For the time being, Balbirnie added, he’d be switching off from cricket in a particularly homely fashion. “My wife has told me I’ve got a crib to paint,” he said. “We have a baby coming in August so that’ll take up most of my week. But it’ll be just enough time to switch the pads and head out.”

Rohit's message for bowlers taking on England's Bazballers: 'Stay calm'

Despite the absence of Ashwin on the third day in Rajkot, India proceeded to seal their biggest Test win

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Feb-2024The message from Rohit Sharma and India’s team management to the bowling attack was to “stay calm” even as Ben Duckett countered them with a blistering century on the second day in Rajkot. Duckett’s wicket then hastened England’s collapse as they fell from 260 for 4 to 319 all out, in response to India’s first-innings 445. India’s bowlers triggered another England collapse in their second innings to seal a whopping 434-run victory and a 2-1 series lead.”When you’re playing Test cricket, it’s not played over two days or three days. We do understand the importance of extending the game for five days,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation. “They played well, to be honest, and played some really good shots. They put us under pressure a little bit there, but look we’ve got class in our squad, when it comes to bowling. Obviously, the message was to stay calm because when things like that happen, it’s actually easy to drift away from what you want to do as a team. But I’m really proud of how we came back the next day, stuck to what we discussed, and when those things happen, it’s a delight to watch.”Related

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja star in India's biggest Test win by runs

After the second day’s play, India’s most experienced bowler R Ashwin was forced to leave Rajkot after a family emergency. Despite Ashwin’s absence on the third day – he rejoined the squad on the fourth – India proceeded to secure their biggest Test win, in terms of runs.”Lot of turning points. Once we won the toss…that was actually a good toss to win because we know in India, how important it is to win the toss and put runs on the board,” Rohit said. “And the lead that we got was very, very crucial for us. And the way we came out and bowled after that onslaught from the English batters was important for us to stay calm. The bowlers actually showed a lot of character and not to forget we didn’t have our most experienced bowler as well. But for this group to come out and get the job done in that fashion was really, really proud to watch.”Rohit said that promoting Ravindra Jadeja to No.5, ahead of debutant Sarfaraz Khan, was partly down to having a left-right combination in the middle. Rohit and Jadeja added a 204-run fourth-wicket partnership – the highest in the match – to lift India from 33 for 3. Both Rohit and Jadeja hit hundreds while Sarfaraz made a sparkling 62 off 66 balls.”Especially for this game, we thought he’s got so much experience playing this format,” Rohit said of Jadeja’s promotion. “He’s scored a lot of runs as well of late in the last couple of years. We always wanted that left-right batting as well. Sarfaraz being Sarfaraz we know the quality that he brings and we wanted him to just have some time before he gets into bat.”By no means it’s a long-term plan with the batting order; we just go by the flow – what we feel on that particular day or what is right for us in that particular Test match depending on the composition of the opposition as well. We try to calculate everything and then go with the flow.”Jadeja followed up his 112 with a match haul of seven wickets, including a five-for in the final innings, at his home ground. “I know about this wicket,” Jadeja said after collecting his Player-of-the-match award. “If we bat first, it’s always good to bat as the ball comes nicely onto the bat and in the second half it starts spinning. When Rohit won the toss, I was like ‘okay, this is what we wanted’.”On this wicket, you won’t get easy wickets because you have to work hard for it because this surface looks good to bat on and you need to work hard to get wickets. You can’t just bowl and get wickets easily. You have to earn the wicket.”

The Spanish Ministry of Social Rights has requested an investigation into the event following a formal complaint made by the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE). The complaint centres on the alleged hiring of people with dwarfism for entertainment purposes during Yamal's party in Olivella, a town west of Barcelona. A video circulating on social media appeared to show performers arriving at the venue, sparking backlash and legal scrutiny.

While Yamal has not commented on the specifics of the legal complaint, he made a strong statement regarding the scrutiny he faces. The young forward, who is no stranger to media attention, chose to deliver his response in Spanish to ensure clarity, despite the question being posed in Catalan. This move was widely interpreted as a sign of his growing maturity and awareness of his public image. He also publicly stated he feels no pressure wearing the legendary number and is "indifferent" to both criticism and praise from outside his inner circle.

Mumbai men to get 100% pay raise from 2024-25 domestic season

In a move that could potentially pave way for the others to follow suit, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has agreed to incentivise its senior men’s team with a 100% pay raise from the 2024-25 season.A recommendation for the state association to match players’ BCCI earnings from the domestic circuit has been approved at the MCA’s apex council meeting. This effectively doubles a player’s earnings through the season. The BCCI currently pays players at the senior men’s level across three slabs. Players with over 40 first-class caps earn INR 60,000 a day, while those who have played 21-40 games take home INR 50,000 a day, and those who have featured in fewer than 20 games earn INR 40,000 a day.Related

  • Indian players stand to earn INR 45-60 lakhs per Test

Opening batter Bhupen Lalwani, for example, who featured in all 10 games Mumbai played in Ranji Trophy 2023-24, would have earned INR 17.2 lakhs as match fees. Had this rule come into effect from this season, he would have stood to earn INR 34.4 lakh.Lalwani has played just 14 first-class matches, which means his base earnings from the Ranji Trophy stand at INR 40,000 a day at the moment. The overall earnings for someone who has featured in over 40 first-class games could be significantly higher.Earlier in the month, the MCA announced prize money of INR 5 crores for its players. This was over and above the prize money offered by the BCCI to Mumbai for winning the Ranji Trophy. The move to match earnings is especially bound to benefit those who don’t have an IPL contract.”We felt that the player should earn more, especially those who play Ranji Trophy cricket,” MCA president Amol Kale said. “For us red-ball cricket matters the most as the Ranji Trophy holds a special place for everyone in Mumbai.”There has been a growing chorus among former players to prioritise domestic cricket, particularly in the wake of the BCCI’s decision to introduce a Test Incentive scheme to its centrally contracted men’s players for prioritising red-ball cricket. Under this scheme, a player’s match fees will go up by 300% if he features in more than 75% of Tests in a particular season.Sunil Gavaskar, the former India captain, voiced his support for extending a similar scheme to first-class cricketers. He had asked the board to consider doubling or tripling existing match fees to “encourage players and look after the feeder system.””If the Ranji Trophy fee can be doubled or tripled, certainly there will be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, [and a] lot less pullouts,” Gavaskar had said. “They will all be wanting to play with the slab system – [if] every ten first-class matches you get that much more – so I would request the BCCI to look at that aspect as well.”This isn’t the first time the MCA has contemplated such a move. In 2022-23, the MCA had proposed annual contracts, and had even set up a three-member committee to propose a structure. That move, proposed by former president Vijay Patil, wasn’t passed by the Apex Council. The MCA soon conducted elections and Patil was replaced by Kale, the current president.

Mullanpur, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)Big Picture – Pace the way to go in Mullanpur? It is still early days this season, but the surfaces in IPL’s newest venue Mullanpur have given all the indications of being a a fast bowler’s ally. In the two matches so far, 30 wickets have fallen – 27 picked by the bowlers and three run-outs. Out of these, 23 wickets have been picked up by the quicks. There was significant movement and carry noticeable under the lights when Punjab Kings played Sunrisers Hyderabad at this venue on Tuesday, with run-scoring not as easy initially. That is reflected in the numbers, too.Among all the venues so far in IPL 2024, Mullanpur has the best average for fast bowlers (19.7) and the lowest run rate (7.7) in the powerplay. Nine wickets have fallen in the first six overs here in two games, joint second with Mumbai. Will this concern Rajasthan Royals, who are coming into the game having just been beaten for the first time in IPL 2024 on Wednesday? Nope. On the contrary, they might be the happier side. The Royals’ quicks have picked up nine wickets in the powerplay at an average of 24.3, the best among any team in the tournament. Kings are also not too far behind averaging 26.6 runs per wicket in the powerplay and that could make for an interesting battle up top.The other thing Royals will need to be wary of is not letting history repeat itself. Kulkarni ton, Tiwari four-for take India past USA and enter Super Six unbeaten

Australia also enter Super Six with an all-win record after beating Sri Lanka by six wickets

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2024Arshin Kulkarni’s 108 off 118 balls, Musheer Khan’s 76-ball 73, and Naman Tiwari’s frugal spell of 4 for 20 led India to a big 201-run win over USA in the Under-19 World Cup on Sunday. The win meant they kept their unblemished record intact going into the Super Six of the tournament.India piled up 326 for 5 in their 50 overs with Kulkarni and Musheer doing the bulk of the scoring. In reply, medium pacer Tiwari picked up 4 for 20 in nine overs as USA were kept to 125 for 8 in Bloemfontein. After India were sent in to bat, Adarsh Singh struck three fours in the first over, but the USA bowlers kept both him and Kulkarni in check for a while. India could only manage 40 after ten overs, which led to Adarsh getting a bit desperate and chipping Ateendra Subramanian, the medium pacer, to mid-off when on 25.Kulkarni and Musheer, however, dug in to add 155 runs off 142 balls for the second wicket. Both the batters took their time in settling in before opening up. Kulkarni had a lucky escape when he was dropped on 16 at mid-off and made sure to cash in. He hacked quick bowler Aarin Nadkarni for six over deep midwicket and clobbered Rishi Ramesh, the legspinner, around the same region before reaching his half-century off 70 balls.Naman Tiwari rattled the USA batters with his pace•ICC via Getty Images

Musheer continued from where he had left off against Ireland. He got going with a cover drive off Nadkarni and then hit Utkarsh Srivastava across the line for six. It took him 56 balls to reach his half-century and with both batters now set, they got the boundaries away more frequently.Musheer fell to Ramesh, but Kulkarni reached the three-figure mark with a four past fine leg off 110 balls. Captain Uday Saharan struck a 27-ball 35 to keep the momentum going, but he and Kulkarni fell in the space of six balls as USA looked for a way back. India, however, were 259 for 4 in the 44th over at that stage, and Priyanshu Moliya (27* off 19 balls), Sachin Dhas (20 off 16) and Aravelly Avanish (12* off seven) played important cameos to take India past the 325-run mark.USA were never really in the chase. They lost openers Prannav Chettipalayam and Bhavya Mehta in the first two overs. Tiwari then removed Ramesh for 8 as USA slipped to 12 for 3 after 7.5 overs. Siddarth Kappa and Srivastava stayed firm for a bit, adding 43 runs off 93 balls for the fourth wicket, before offspinner Moliya got into the act, sending back Kappa for 18.Tiwari then added to his wicket tally as he removed Srivastava and Manav Nayak in successive overs to have USA at 79 for 6, which soon became 90 for 7 after 30 overs. Amogh Arepally (27* off 71) and Nadkarni (20 off 44) added 31 off 78 balls for the eighth wicket, which delayed the inevitable and ensured India couldn’t bowl the opposition out.India headed into the Super Sixes topping their group and will face New Zealand on Tuesday.Callum Vidler picked 3 for 28 from his nine overs•ICC/Getty Images

Sineth Jayawardena, who had won the toss and batted, moved Sri Lanka forward with a 47-run stand with Supun Waduge, but Vidler and Tom Campbell, the offspinner, removed them in successive overs to rebuild the pressure.Dinura Kalupahana, top-scoring with 64 with nine fours and three sixes, stitched two 40-plus stands in the middle overs with Ravishan de Silva and Rusanda Gamage. But medium pacer Harjas Singh and offspinner Raf MacMilllan cut short the promising partnerships before Vidler’s return took out Kalupahana and left Sri Lanka stuttering at 166 for 6 as the final powerplay got underway.Campbell and his new-ball partner Mahli Beardman took out the tail as Sri Lanka were all out seven balls short of their 50 overs.Harry Dixon’s flier, comprising three fours and a six off his first 13 balls, allowed Australia to cruise through a 71-run opening stand with Sam Konstas. Left-arm spinner Vishwa Lahiru, the pick of Sri Lanka’s bowlers, dismissed Dixon and Hugh Weibgen in consecutive overs and with legspinner Malsha Tharupathi getting Konstas, Australia were wobbling for a bit.Hicks ensured it was just that by accumulating a slow but steady 49-run stand with Harjas before joining forces with Campbell. The two shared eight boundaries in their partnership and did not allow the asking rate to rise over five at any point. Their unbeaten 82-run stand took Australia home with seven balls to spare.

Clarke demands Notts improvement after record stand secures draw

392-run stand with New Zealand’s Will Young denies Somerset before rain

ECB Reporters Network22-Apr-2024Joe Clarke and Will Young were denied the chance of a 400 partnership when heavy rain washed out most of the final day of Nottinghamshire’s Vitality County Championship First Division match with Somerset at Taunton.Only nine overs were possible at the start of the morning session, which began with the visitors 418 for 2 in their second innings, leading by 157 runs.Having already broken a Notts record for a third-wicket stand, which had stood since 1903, Clarke and Young added 22 runs, taking the total to 440 before the rain set in at 11.40am with their partnership extended to 392.No further play was possible before umpires Russell Warren and David Millns abandoned the game at the conclusion of a 1pm lunch period. Clarke was left unbeaten on 213 and Young on 174 as Somerset took 15 points from the draw and Notts ten.The early finish also deprived the pair of a chance to break the Notts record stand for any wicket, the unbroken opening stand of 406 put together by Darren Bicknell and Guy Welton against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in 2000.Related

“We have to improve as a side because we have been putting ourselves in positions we don’t want to be in,” Clarke said. “We need to be in control and pushing to win games, so although it was good to get points from this one, we know as a group we have to be better.”This was Clarke’s third hundred of the season and he sits one run behind Warwickshire captain Alex Davies at the top of the run-scoring charts in Division One. “The partnership with Will was outstanding,” Clarke said. “We fed off each other well and kept each other going.”It was the first game this year with the Duke ball, but that made no difference to how I approached my innings. As always, I just tried to keep things simple and cash in on the confidence I am feeling with the bat at the moment.”Will Young just oozes class. He had not had many days in the country before we travelled down to play here after a long flight from New Zealand, so to fit back into the team so seamlessly was amazing.”Lewis Gregory, Somerset’s captain, said: “I would like to see pitches here offer a lot more to the bowlers than that one did. It flattened out much quicker than expected, but it’s not an exact science and that can happen here. Three draws is a solid start to the season for us. We have played some really good cricket and now need to build on it with a win.”
