As bad as Beto: Moyes must finally ditch 6/10 Everton man after Anfield

Liverpool versus Everton is always a tasty affair at Anfield in the Premier League.

Today’s lunchtime Merseyside Derby was no different as Arne Slot’s Reds raced into a two-goal lead, before the Toffees fought back courtesy of an Idrissa Gueye screamer beating Alisson.

In the end, Everton just didn’t have enough to equalise in the 2-1 defeat, with Beto struggling severely in the first half, before David Moyes put him out of his misery at the half-time mark.

Beto's struggles at Anfield in numbers

Everton were always going to struggle to impose themselves on the contest, coming up against a hostile Anfield atmosphere.

Indeed, looking at the overall match numbers, Slot’s Reds would dominate the possession with 58% of the ball, as Beto ended up being very much of a bystander in a first half that saw Liverpool accelerate into a two-goal advantage.

While Hugo Ekitike was confidently adding to his early Premier League goal tally with this instinctive finish, Beto was attempting to scrap his way into the fierce contest, but the 27-year-old was ultimately far too passive.

Beto would only complete two accurate passes all match, as per Sofascore, while only successfully winning two aerial duels as an isolated figure in Moyes’ attack.

In matches to come, Moyes could potentially have a rethink as to who he starts as the leading man in the Toffees attack, with Thierno Barry also fading in and out of the hotly-contested affair when coming on for the Portuguese striker.

It wasn’t just the attack that would receive pelters at the final whistle, though, with an experienced Everton defender now looking to be on borrowed time under the Scotman after suffering a 2-1 loss to their arch rivals.

The 6/10 star on borrowed time under Moyes

Everton were dealt a two-goal sucker punch in the first half as Liverpool’s fast-paced play on the ball constantly caught out a slow Toffees defence.

Michael Keane definitely struggled in this regard throughout, with the former Burnley man failing to keep tight to Ekitike before he sealed the win for the Reds deep into the first half.

As noted above, Keane would only win 50% of his six duels during the hotly contested clash, with the experienced centre-back also only winning two tackles to try and keep a free-flowing Liverpool attack at bay.

It does only feel like a matter of time before the 6-foot-3 stalwart is out of Moyes’ starting XIs for good, with Jarrad Branthwaite nearly back up to full fitness, further troubling the 32-year-old’s long-term minutes in the main lineup.

After all, Moyes will see that he’s upgraded and progressed his side in the forward department, with faces such as Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall undoubtedly offering up plenty of quality, even if Beto disappeared at Anfield.

Moreover, it appears that the Toffees already have an experienced head in the heart of defence that still has the legs to perform at the highest level in James Tarkowski, with the Everton captain winning eight duels when giving his all, despite the devastating final outcome.

While Keane would be gifted a 6/10 post-match rating by Liverpool World’s Will Rooney, it is now nine seasons and down for the 32-year-old in an Everton shirt, with a permanent change in defence perhaps now needed.

After failing to close down some seriously threatening Liverpool attackers and be authorative in the Merseyside Derby, his long-term minutes in the Toffees main XI week in week out must soon be up, especially when Branthwaite returns.

Moyes' own Richarlison: Everton are brewing a "menacing" new forward

Everton are redefining their attacking quality with David Moyes back at the helm.

Stokes blames media 'agenda' for pre-match pressure on Pope

England Test captain Ben Stokes believes comments he made about Jacob Bethell ahead of the Zimbabwe Test were willfully taken out of context to suit an agenda against Ollie Pope. Speaking after England had completed a comprehensive innings-and-45-run win over Zimbabwe on day three at Trent Bridge, Stokes used his post-match engagements to defend his vice-captain, who struck an imperious 171 on day one, his eighth Test hundred.Stokes took issue with the way his own quotes were presented after being asked on Wednesday if Bethell, who batted at No.3 in the previous series in New Zealand but was missing this week on IPL duty with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, would come straight back in for next month’s series against India.Pope had been Stokes’ No.3 since he assumed the captaincy in 2022, but dropped down the order to keep wicket after Jordan Cox, Jamie Smith’s paternity leave cover replacement behind the stumps, broke a finger in the lead-up to the first Test.Bethell finished with 260 runs at 52.00 across six innings, notching three half-centuries, with the senior management clearly enamored with the 21-year-old’s skill and poise. Though his absence meant no decision had to be made just yet, Stokes was asked whether Bethell was still considered to be the “incumbent No.3” during a captaincy media briefing on the Wednesday before the Test.Related

“If you’re smart enough, the series that Beth had out in New Zealand, obviously he’s going to be back in the UK for that India series. So, I think you put 2 and 2 together, you probably know what’s going to happen.”Stokes was dismayed when he saw the coverage of his words, later insisting he was talking about Bethell returning to the squad rather than the XI. After England wrapped up victory with more than four sessions of this four-day Test to spare, he launched a staunch defense of Pope, all but backing him to start the India series, which begins at Headingley on June 20.”There’s always someone going to be under the spotlight,” Stokes told . “We’ve come into this game and I’ve personally felt that it was a bit of a… I don’t know… not a vendetta… but I got asked a simple question about Bethell, said put two and two together, he comes back into the squad and then all of a sudden it turns into something that suits the agenda of the time.”He’s (Pope) my vice-captain, and he’s been incredible for me at No.3 and the team. I think he’s averaging over 40 now (43.06 at No.3), so it just suited what was being said, to be honest. Very, very pleased for him that he went out there and played the way that he did, he’s an important part to this team away from his runs as well, he’s a leader within the group and I value his leadership role as vice-captain as well.”He’s a quality player. As I said, since he’s gone up to No.3, since I’ve been captain, he’s performed very, very well. Him being vice-captain, he comes up with some great ideas out in the middle, especially when I’m bowling I sort of get into a little bit of my own rhythm, take myself away from that, so it’s great having someone like Popey out there who can help me along in those moments.”Pope’s knock included a 137-run stand with opener Zak Crawley, another who might be put under pressure by Bethell’s return. He, too, registered three figures, with 126 that happened to be his first century in two years, bringing up the landmark after Ben Duckett had raised his bat for a hundred of his own. That all of the top three were able to thrive given the pressure from beyond the dressing room, guiding England to an insurmountable first-innings score of 565 for 6 declared, was the main story as far as Stokes was concerned.”I think there’s obviously always pressure on sportsmen to go and perform, whether there isn’t that external noise from the outside coming in, whether potentially their spots up for competition. Zak and Popey know every time they walk out onto the field that their job is to get runs and put in performances. And that doesn’t change day to day really.”But competition for places is a very, very healthy place to be in as an international sports team. The way that Zak, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope have played this week, I think let’s focus on that, as opposed to anything else, you know. All three of them have gone out and played incredibly well for us, set the game up exactly how we wanted to when you get put into bat. I think that’s what should be spoken about because they’re three pretty special performances.”

Luis Enrique launches passionate defence of PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier after difficult start to life at Parc des Princes

Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has launched a passionate defence of new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier after a tough start to his career in the French capital. The stopper arrived from Lille in a big-money move in the summer, replacing former No.1 Gianluigi Donnarumma, but has come under scrutiny for his performances so far for the Ligue 1 champions and current Champions League holders.

Chevalier comes under fire after PSG move

PSG's decision to replace Donnarumma with Chevalier in the summer caused plenty of headlines, with the Ligue 1 champions warned their new signing would not be able to match the Italy international's level. Chevalier has faced more criticism after an underwhelming start to life in the French capital and came under fire for his performance last time out in a 3-3 draw against Strasbourg.

Former goalkeeper Lionel Charbonnier told : "He doesn't have the charisma at the moment. He's not doing enough. He didn't do his job. On the first goal, I thought at first that it was a complicated header, and after analysing it, he's moving back. He shouldn't move back, he should move forward. He's on a back foot, so he dives back and that's a no-go.

"On the second goal, he tried to stretch his leg out, his studs got caught in the turf. For me, for the moment, the suit is too big for Chevalier. You put it with his performances at Lille, he doesn't concede the two goals. He's very small. When you look at him, you get the impression that the goal is huge."

AdvertisementAFPLuis Enrique leaps to Chevalier's defence

PSG boss Luis Enrique has been quick to defend his goalkeeper. The former Barcelona manager was asked about his stopper ahead of PSG's Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen and says he's more than satisfied with his new recruit.

"It's the same every year, I'm very happy with your feelings. I'm very happy with Lucas Chevalier! For me he's one of the best options or THE best option. I'm very happy with his performances. And when we recruit a player, we think over a long period of time," he told reporters.

"And what I can say about Lucas Chevalier is that I like his personality, his level as player. We are very confident that he will be very important to the team for many years to come.  That is the confidence we have in our player, and especially for me, when I see Lucas Chevalier's performance during these matches, I see what I want to see. And for me, that is enough."

'You killed Donnarumma' – Luis Enrique hits out at media

Luis Enrique also criticised the media for their treatment of Chevalier and Donnarumma. The PSG boss says Donnarumma had to put up with harsh media criticism during his time at the club but admitted it's part of the job at a club like PSG.

"He has personality, he showed it and he still shows it in training and in matches. What I like… I think you don't remember for how many years you criticized Gigio Donnarumma. I remember perfectly!" he added.

"The last four years, you killed him. You killed Gigio Donnarumma sportingly. So please… even when I wasn't the coach of Paris Saint-Germain. I felt all the time that you criticised Gigio Donnarumma. When you are a goalkeeper of a club like Paris Saint-Germain, you have to learn to live with that."

Donnarumma proved pivotal to PSG's run to Champions League glory last and, having already won the Men's Yashin Trophy at the 2025 Ballon d'Or ceremony, is hot favourite to also be named Best Men's Goalkeeper at the equivalent Best FIFA Football Awards. Manchester City saw PSG's surprise willingness to move on from the giant Italian stopper as an opportunity they couldn't turn miss.

As well as Iheanacho: Rodgers must unleash rarely-seen Celtic "baller"

Celtic get a break from Scottish Premiership and European football this weekend as they prepare to take on Partick Thistle in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

The Hoops will be looking to seal their place in the last four of the competition in their efforts to retain the trophy that they won on penalties against their Glasgow rivals last season.

Brendan Rodgers’ side beat Falkirk 4-1 in the last round of the League Cup, thanks to goals from Dane Murray, Alistair Johnston, and Daizen Maeda, along with an own goal from Liam Henderson.

The Celtic boss did make a host of changes to his starting line-up for that clash, as the likes of Viljami Sinisalo, Johnny Kenny, Arne Engels, Murray, and Auston Trusty were given chances to impress.

This clash with Partick Thistle on Sunday provides the head coach with another opportunity to rotate his team and see what the players on the fringes of the squad have to offer, despite it being a quarter-final.

One player who feels like an almost guaranteed starter is summer signing Kelechi Iheanacho, who arrived on a free transfer from Sevilla the day after the deadline for the window passed.

Why Kelechi Iheanacho should start for Celtic

The Nigeria international made his competitive bow for the Scottish Premiership champions against Kilmarnock last time out, coming off the bench for the final 20 minutes.

Iheanacho came on to replace Maeda, who had scored the opening goal in the game, in the 70th minute and the hosts went on to equalise through David Watson, who powered home a header from a corner.

However, as shown in the highlights above, the left-footed ace kept his composure to score from the penalty spot in the 96th minute to win the match for the Hoops on his debut for the club.

As you can see in the table above, Iheanacho was keen to make an impact after coming on for his debut for the Scottish giants, as evidenced by three of his nine touches being shots.

He wanted to get on the scoresheet on his debut, clearly, and the penalty provided him with the perfect chance to get off the mark instead of it dragging on for any more matches.

The 28-year-old marksman should now be thrown into the starting line-up for this League Cup clash with Partick Thistle because it is the ideal chance for him to start and get 60 or 70 minutes under his belt to build his fitness back up.

His last competitive start at club level came for Middlesbrough against Norwich City in the English Championship in April, so it may take time for him to get back to his best from a physical perspective.

The former Manchester City and Leicester City marksman will be looking to get on the scoresheet again this weekend to force himself into contention to start against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League on Wednesday night.

Iheanacho is not the only star who should be brought into the starting line-up against Partick Thistle on Sunday, though, as there is another rarely-seen talent who should be given a chance to shine.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Paulo Bernardo has only started one game in all competitions, against Livingston in the Premiership, and should finally be unleashed from the start for this League Cup clash.

Why Paulo Bernardo should start for Celtic

The Portugal U21 international only played 23 minutes off the bench against Falkirk in the last round of the competition, and he has been an unused substitute in the last three games in all competitions for the Hoops.

Bernardo, who has also only played once in the Premiership this season, has rarely been used by Rodgers this season, as the likes of Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Benjamin Nygren, Luke McCowan, and Engels have been preferred ahead of him.

The Portuguese star, who was described as “tenacious” and a “baller” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, did play 1,272 minutes of action in the Premiership last term, per Sofascore, as he started 13 of his 28 outings in the division.

Bernardo, who scored a brilliant goal against Rangers in his first season at the club on loan from Benfica, produced two goals and three assists in those 13 starts, which shows that he can make an impact in possession.

As you can see in the table above, the central midfielder ranked highly among his positional peers as a scorer and a creator of goals per 90, which shows that he was an efficient player who made the most of the limited opportunities afforded to him by Rodgers.

On top of offering a threat in the final third from a central midfield position, the ‘tenacious’ talent also held his own in physical duels in the Premiership for the Hoops last season.

Bernardo averaged 2.76 tackles and interceptions per 90 for Celtic, winning 63.8% of his tackles and 53.8% of his overall duels, per FotMob, which shows that he was strong in the tackle and not easily bullied by opposition players.

Hatate, for comparison, only won 53.1% of his tackles and 43.8% of his duels, per FotMob, in the Premiership last season, which suggests that the Portuguese ace offered even more to the team out of possession.

These statistics suggest that Bernardo has the qualities on and off the ball to put in well-rounded performances in the middle of the park, but he has not had many chances to showcase his ability in the current campaign, with one start under his belt.

Therefore, Rodgers should drop Hatate to the bench to unleash the former Benfica man against Partick Thistle, to provide him with an opportunity to prove that he deserves more minutes, either as a starter or off the bench, in the weeks and months to come.

Rodgers must finally bin Celtic flop who earns more than Iheanacho

Celtic must finally part ways with this flop who earns more than Sebastian Tounekti and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Barcelona treasurer admits the club should have rebuilt Camp Nou 'years ago' and explains why renovated stadium is so important

Barcelona treasurer Ferran Olive has conceded that the club are "late" in rebuilding Camp Nou, admitting that the long-overdue renovation should have been started long ago. His comments came as Barca president Joan Laporta hailed the Spotify Camp Nou project as the "collective dream" of the club's fans, calling it a legacy that future generations will inherit.

  • Barcelona inching closer to Camp Nou return

Barcelona have officially received the green light to reopen the Camp Nou after months of delays, with the city council approving the Phase 1A occupancy permit that allows 27,000 spectators inside the renovated stadium. However, the club have opted to remain at the Lluis Companys in Montjuic for now, prioritising financial logic over nostalgia. According to club sources, it makes little sense to return to a partially reopened Camp Nou when Montjuic's larger capacity currently yields higher matchday revenue.

The decision comes amid a crucial period for Barcelona's Espai Barca project, which continues to be one of the most ambitious infrastructural undertakings in European football. The club plans to eventually host 47,000 fans under Phase 1B, a step that would also allow UEFA approval for Champions League matches at the new stadium. Vice President Elena Fort has suggested that a grand return could coincide with the club’s 126th anniversary in late November, calling it "an ideal moment" for the homecoming.

While many supporters were disappointed by the extended stay at Montjuic, the board insists that patience now will lead to much greater financial and sporting stability in the long term. The delay also allows more time for structural checks and technical validation of the renovated areas, ensuring the safety and quality standards required by both local and European authorities.

Camp Nou should have been rebuilt 'years ago'

Barcelona treasurer Olive acknowledged during the General Assembly that the club had left it far too long to modernise its iconic home: "We should have built this stadium years ago; we're late. And we're doing it so we can compete with the best clubs in the world. We have €175 million ($204m) in stadium revenue [for 2024-25], and without doing anything, without building a new stadium, we'd be at €250m ($291m)[at Camp Nou], but we can reach €400m ($466m)wtih the new stadium."

It underlines the project's vital role in the club's economic recovery. His remarks echoed those of  president Laporta, who described the new Spotify Camp Nou as a symbol of both unity and ambition.

"Spotify Camp Nou…it is the collective dream of Barcelona fans and the legacy that future generations will have," Laporta said. "We have had the courage to reactivate this project that had been put on hold. The members have to see this dream come true and have to live it. We have worked tirelessly to obtain the permits from the city council that would allow us to return to the stadium. This permit arrived and I would like to extend a warm congratulations."

Both Olive and Laporta reinforced that Espai Barca is about more than bricks and revenue, rather a statement of identity. The new stadium is intended not only to compete financially with Europe's elite, but also to preserve the club's essence by keeping the heart of FC Barcelona rooted in its historic home.

  • Controversies surrounding Camp Nou financing

The Espai Barca project, valued at nearly €1 billion ($1.17bn), has been one of the most scrutinised initiatives in Barcelona's modern history. Its construction contract was controversially awarded to Turkish firm Limak, despite the company reportedly scoring lowest in a technical evaluation against Spanish competitors Ferrovial and FCC. Limak's proposal demanded an upfront payment of roughly €200m ($233m) compared to just €12m ($14m) from other bidders, raising concerns about transparency and long-term financing. Club officials have since defended the decision, stating that Limak's plan best met the deadlines imposed by UEFA and the local government for completion.

The goal remains to transform Spotify Camp Nou into a state-of-the-art football and entertainment complex capable of generating consistent revenue year-round. The finished structure will serve as the crown jewel of the Espai Barca ecosystem, which also includes a new Palau Blaugrana arena and improved training facilities.

Off the pitch, Barcelona have strengthened their commercial backbone through an extended partnership with Spotify. The renewed agreement keeps the streaming giant as the club's primary sponsor until 2030 and extends naming rights for the stadium until 2034, ensuring consistent income during the reconstruction phase. The collaboration has been hailed as a perfect fusion of football and global entertainment culture.

When will Barcelona actually return to Camp Nou?

With the city council's Phase 1A permit secured, Barcelona are now focused on receiving the more expansive Phase 1B approval, which would allow 47,000 fans to attend matches at the renovated Camp Nou. Club vice president Elena Fort remains optimistic, stressing that the process is mainly administrative and that the works themselves are already complete.

Once approved, the club's long-awaited return could coincide with a marquee fixture around its November anniversary. Financially, the coming months will be decisive. The club aims to capitalise on future stadium revenues, expected to jump from €175m to as much as €400m annually once the venue is fully operational. That increase could be transformative for Barcelona, who are still recovering from years of financial turmoil and strict La Liga spending controls.

Laudrup said "untouchable" Rangers star was "one of the best" in the world

Glasgow Rangers legend Brian Laudrup has called a former Gers teammate “one of the best players in the world”, making it clear how highly he thought of him during their time together at Ibrox.

Laudrup a true great at Rangers

Laudrup is still remembered with great affection by Gers supporters, with the Dane arguably one of the most talented foreign players to ever represent the club.

The midfielder was often a joy to watch during a great period at Ibrox in the 1990s, with the former Denmark international spending four years with Rangers between 1994 and 1998, endearing himself to the fans.

Laudrup scored 45 goals in 151 appearances for the Scottish Premiership giants, with his technical ability almost unrivalled in the Scottish games at the time, and he actually admitted he’d love to play for the Gers team that won the title under Steven Gerrard back in 2021.

“I would have loved to play in that team. The style of play they have nowadays is fantastic to watch. It’s all about ball possession, that’s not to say my Rangers team were a long ball team far from it actually, but now it’s all about possession. Our team in 97 had a lot of top class footballers, as they have in this team now, but it’s perhaps a more assembled team with younger players.”

Laudrup had some great times during his spell as a Rangers player, including the small matter of winning three Scottish league titles and winning the Player of the Year award twice, and he has also played alongside some wonderful footballers.

Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine in the past [via Give Me Sport], Laudrup heaped praise on the brilliance of Paul Gascoigne as a teammate at Rangers, calling him one of the best footballers on the planet.

“I played with him at Rangers and in his prime he was one of the best players in the world. He glided with the ball in a way that made him virtually untouchable for opponents and he was a match-winner, who had great technique when striking the ball. He was also a great entertainer – on and off the pitch! A tremendous natural talent.”

Gascoigne’s life after football has been well-documented, with lots of personal issues sadly affecting him, but it should never be forgotten what a great player he was at his peak.

The former England star was the complete midfielder in many ways, combining skill, power, intelligence and leadership, and the manner in which his personality rubbed off on those around him is almost unrivalled.

Rangers must regret losing the "Mbappe of Scottish football" for nothing

Rangers had a star who was described as the Kylian Mbappe of Scottish football, then lost him for nothing.

Laudrup and Gascoigne enjoyed so many special times together, linking with each other superbly on the pitch, and you wonder what Russell Martin would do to them both in his current squad in their prime.
