Crystal Palace set sights on signing "incredible" £30m+ Premier League ace

With just five days left to welcome crucial incomings, Crystal Palace have reportedly set their sights on a Premier League defender in a move that could see the Eagles spend the money gained from the sale of Joachim Andersen to Fulham.

Crystal Palace transfer news

Amid two defeats in two games against Brentford and West Ham United, the last thing that Oliver Glasner and Palace needed was Andersen's exit. But Fulham came swooping in nonetheless and off the Dane went in a deal worth around a reported £30m. His exit could at least mean that Marc Guehi's future, for this season, remains at Selhurst Park despite a reported bid of £65m from Newcastle United.

Even with Guehi seemingly set to stay put, however, Palace may have plenty of work to do before the window slams shut, having been linked to the likes of Max Lacroix and Raheem Sterling in what could be one of the most surprising deals of the summer.

Before they potentially steal the headlines by landing the Premier League winner though, they've reportedly set their sights on another reinforcement. According to Alan Nixon on his Patreon via Molineux News, Crystal Palace are now eyeing a move to sign Rayn Ait-Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers, who value their defender at more than £30m.

The left-back was reportedly the subject of interest from Liverpool earlier in the window, but as we know, a move never materialised. Now, those at Selhurst Park could take full advantage to land competition for Tyrick Mitchell and perhaps even reportedly use Sam Johnstone in a player-plus-cash deal, given Wolves' interest in the goalkeeper.

Parish and Freedman submit Crystal Palace bid for 22 y/o to replace Andersen

Andersen is reportedly closing in on a departure…

ByTom Cunningham Aug 23, 2024

That said, a deal is likely to be a difficult one for Palace to seal ahead of deadline day, given that Wolves are direct rivals in the battle to avoid Premier League relegation and push towards the top half. What's more, the fact that the Midlands club already allowed left-back Hugo Bueno to leave on loan to Feyenoord this summer suggests that Ait-Nouri will not be up for sale.

"Incredible" Ait-Nouri would bring ideal versatility for Glasner

Of course, it's not just Mitchell that Ait-Nouri would compete with if Palace did manage to land his signature this summer. His ability to play left-midfield as well as in the number 10 role and on the right-hand side means that Glasner could yet get the chance to work with a player capable of making an impact all across his current side.

Alas, Wolves boss Gary O'Neil won't be too keen to lose his defender, having been full of praise for Ait-Nouri last season. O'Neil told the club's official website: “I’m enjoying working with Rayan, I think he’s an incredible talent, a great guy and he brings a real enthusiasm and life to the place. We can use him anywhere so, unfortunately, at the moment we have to because we don’t have many others.

“But he is talented enough when we roll him in and play him in midfield a few times and we played him as a right 10 in the second half today, and he’s come on loads – his work rate and everything about him."

O jogo
LONDRINA COMEÇA O JOGO CARIMBANDO A TRAVE

SEGUNDO TEMPO
OPERÁRIO-PR QUASE MARCA NO COMECINHO

LONDRINA CARIMBA A TRAVE NOVAMENTE

Dream Kilman replacement: Wolves make contact with £5m-rated "phenomenon"

Wolverhampton Wanderers may have lost Max Kilman during the summer transfer window, but rest assured, Gary O’Neil is working hard to bring in a replacement.

Of course, it won't be easy. Kilman made over 150 competitive appearances for the Old Gold after joining in 2018, eventually becoming their captain last season.

Wolves captain Max Kilman

With just under a month to go until the end of the current window, O’Neil has plenty of time, but he must ensure his replacement can fill the large void left by the Englishman.

Could O’Neil be closer than we think to making that signing?

Wolves eye up Championship defender

Naturally, there have been a fair few links with numerous defenders in a bid to sign one or two this summer.

The latest news regarding O’Neil’s search comes from Fabrizio Romano, who said via X: “Maxime Estève could be one to watch in August as Premier League clubs are exploring move for Burnley CB.

“Wolves have asked for conditions, race open for Estève.”

It appears as though the Molineux outfit could be close to securing a swoop for the Burnley centre-back and he would make for a fine Kilman replacement.

Maxime Esteve’s season in numbers

The Frenchman played for two teams during the 2023/24 campaign. He started the season off with Montpellier, before joining Burnley in January for the second half of the Premier League season.

His performances in Ligue 1 clearly impressed Burnley enough to lure him to England. Across 12 games in the French top flight, Esteve averaged an 80% pass success rate, while keeping four clean sheets, winning 3.6 total duels per game – a success rate of 57% – and recovering 4.3 balls per game, showcasing his defensive talents.

He was slotted into the starting XI straight away upon his arrival at Turf Moor and began to prove exactly why the club went and signed him in the first place.

He finished the Premier League campaign with a pass success rate of 84%, while winning 4.4 total duels per game and recovering 3.9 balls per game, showing that the transition from France to England didn’t faze him at all.

In the top flight between January and May, Esteve ranked in the top 3% for interceptions (1.86), the top 9% for dribblers challenged (1.24) and in the top 5% for carries into the penalty area (0.14) per 90 among his positional peers, yet more evidence of how quickly he settled across the channel.

The defender is currently valued at €5.6m (£5m) according to Football Transfers, but the Championship side will be looking for a lot more than that for a player who only joined six months ago.

The youngster was hailed as “a true athletic phenomenon” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig back in 2022, and he has thrived since then.

O’Neil has a big gap to plug since selling Kilman to West Ham United. Could Esteve make the Englishman forget all about his former captain should he join the Old Gold this summer?

Only time will tell.

Just 40 good overs… up-and-down Delhi Capitals look to thwart the Mumbai Indians juggernaut

Mumbai, four-time winners, have won all their three games against Capitals, who are in their first final

Karthik Krishnaswamy09-Nov-20203:55

Aakash Chopra: Ashwin in the powerplay will be key to Capitals’ success

Big pictureYou could twist that famous Gary Lineker quote and make it about the IPL. Eight teams play 60 games of 40 overs each and, at the end, the Mumbai Indians win – unless it’s an even-number year. The Mumbai Indians have won every IPL that’s taken place in an odd-number year since 2013, but they have failed to make the final in each in-between season. Until now.It was bound to happen at some point, given the ruthless, relentless T20 machine they have turned themselves into, and IPL 2020 will conclude with the Mumbai Indians looking to win their fifth title, and become the second team – after the Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011 – to win back-to-back titles. They have been the best team in the competition this year by pretty much any metric you can think of, but it’s both the charm and the flaw of a league-cum-playoff competition that the best team won’t necessarily get their hands on the trophy. It’s a year of bubbles, and the Delhi Capitals have floated on one that’s come close to bursting on a few occasions, but they have evaded the jagged outcrops and reached the final for the first time. They might have lost five of their last seven games, and each of their three meetings with the Mumbai Indians, but all they need now is 40 good overs. If you looked at the two line-ups at the start of the season, you wouldn’t have thought one was significantly better than the other. But where most of the Mumbai Indians’ players have been touched by the gods of form, some of the Capitals’ key performers, who have had outstanding seasons in the not-too-distant past, have struggled, and it’s caused their line-up to look unbalanced and disjointed. The Mumbai Indians have the form, and a formidable amount of title-winning experience. Rohit Sharma has won five IPL titles, Kieron Pollard four, Hardik Pandya three, and Jasprit Bumrah, Krunal Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav two each. But the Capitals aren’t short of match-winners, and the likes of Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer remain the same players they were at the start of the season even if they have not always looked it. And they will know that past IPL finals have been won by players who have had indifferent seasons. The rest of the tournament is over. Both teams begin anew, knowing they only need 40 good overs. And maybe a Super Over or two.Kagiso Rabada poses after reclaiming the Purple Cap•BCCI

In the newsTrent Boult only bowled two overs during Qualifier 1 against the Capitals, and had to go off with a groin strain. Boult bowled in the nets on the eve of the final, and his captain sounded hopeful about his chances of playing the final. “Trent looks pretty good,” Rohit said. “He’s going to have a session today with all of us and we’ll see how he goes. He pulled up pretty well in the last few days so fingers crossed, hopefully he plays.”Previous meetingsThe Mumbai Indians did the double over the Capitals in the league phase, winning by five wickets in Abu Dhabi courtesy quick fifties from Quinton de Kock and Yadav in a chase of 166, and by a comprehensive nine wickets in Dubai following incisive spells from Boult with the new ball and Bumrah through the middle overs, which kept the Capitals to 110 for 9.It became 3-0 following Qualifier 1, also in Dubai, where they piled on 200 after being sent in, with vital contributions from de Kock, Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Hardik. The Capitals then floundered against Boult and Bumrah once again, slipping to 0 for 3 before a face-saving 65 from Marcus Stoinis narrowed their margin of defeat to 57 runsLikely XIsMumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Trent Boult/James Pattinson, 11 Jasprit Bumrah.Delhi Capitals: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Marcus Stoinis, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Axar Patel, 8 Praveen Dubey/Harshal Patel, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 R Ashwin, 11 Anrich Nortje.Ishan Kishan pounces on a short ball•BCCI

Strategy punt With Hardik not bowling at all this season, the Mumbai Indians’ one real weak link has been the lack of a genuine sixth bowling option. This means they haven’t always been able to shield Krunal’s left-arm spin from the opposition’s left-hand batsmen, and the Capitals have a wealth of those to use against Krunal and the legspinner Rahul Chahar. It’s imperative that these left-handers – Shikhar Dhawan, Shimron Hetmyer, Pant and Axar Patel, who could be used as a pinch-hitter – go hard against Krunal and Chahar, and maximise their returns from their overs. To be able to do this, however, the Capitals would need to minimise the damage they suffer in the powerplay. Boult has more powerplay wickets this season than anyone else, and five of his 14 wickets in that phase have come against the Capitals. Bumrah also has two powerplay wickets against the Capitals. It might be worthwhile for them, therefore, to bat slightly within themselves in this phase – unless they are chasing a big target, of course – and go hard against the spinners when they come on. There is a case for the Mumbai Indians to bowl their spinners early, to minimise their exposure to the left-handers in the Capitals middle order, and also to target Stoinis, whose IPL record against spin (average 26.08, strike rate 123.71) is significantly worse than his record against pace (32.00, 147.55). How the Capitals use R Ashwin could be one of the key tactical questions of the final. Ashwin has excellent IPL numbers against Sharma (79 runs off 95 balls, two dismissals), de Kock (68 off 56, four dismissals) and Kishan (27 off 31, no dismissals), and while Pollard has scored 51 runs off the 34 balls he has faced from the offspinner, he’s also been dismissed four times. The Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, would like to have Yadav at the crease when Ashwin is on. That head-to-head has brought 72 off 51 balls, and no dismissals in eight meetings.Stats that matter Mumbai are the most successful IPL franchise and the Capitals have only just made their first final, but you wouldn’t have been able to tell that from their head-to-head record, which was 12-12 at the start of the season. Mumbai have pulled away since then with three wins on the bounce. One finalist has had a 3-0 record against the other in each of the three previous IPL seasons. The Mumbai Indians overcame their losing streak against the Rising Pune Supergiant to win the 2017 final, while the Chennai Super Kings made it 4-0 over the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018 and the Mumbai Indians made it 4-0 over the Super Kings last year. Kagiso Rabada currently wears the Purple Cap with 29 wickets, but Bumrah is close on his heels with 27. If he scores 68, Dhawan will overtake KL Rahul’s tally of 670 runs and end the season with the Orange Cap. Four Mumbai Indians batsmen – Kishan (29), Hardik (25), Pollard (22) and de Kock (21) – have hit at least 20 sixes in IPL 2020. No Capitals player has reached that mark, with Stoinis (15) their most frequent boundary-clearer.) Stoinis has scored 352 runs and taken 12 wickets this season. He’s one of only 12 allrounders to complete the 350-10 double in an IPL season. Hardik and Andre Russell did it last year, and Sunil Narine in 2018.

Birmingham could hire "genius" manager who’s perfect for Jutkiewicz

Birmingham City are entering into the unknown somewhat dropping down to League One, knowing the lowly division can be a cruel customer for a sleeping giant.

Sunderland were submerged in the third tier for longer than anticipated when relegation was confirmed in 2018, staying put in the league for four seasons before promotion was secured, whilst the likes of Preston North End also didn't instantly bounce back upon relegation either, and even finished 15th during their first dire campaign back at the level in 2012.

That's why this next managerial appointment at St. Andrew's feels so pivotal, needing to hire a boss who can instantly get the Blues back to where they belong, instead of being trapped in the division below for an extended period of time.

This could be why Birmingham are trying to be incredibly ambitious with who they bring in as Tony Mowbray's successor, therefore, with one candidate having just competed in the Championship play-offs instead of worrying about a basement battle.

Birmingham could hire Championship manager

It was reported late last week by Football Insider that Carlos Corberan was in the sights of Birmingham as a potential next manager, with the Spaniard's representatives even in contact with the Blues to iron out some details.

However, already having their work cut out owing to relegation, the task to try and tempt Corberan to drop down a division has been made even more difficult when you consider football journalist John Percy has revealed he is a major target for the Leicester City vacancy too.

It would also cost in the region of £3.5m-£4m for Leicester or any suitor to sign up Corberan, who is still contracted to West Brom, which could be too much money for a bruised Birmingham to fork out after slipping to League One.

Yet, the ambitious American owners at Birmingham might well have this cash ready, knowing that the current Baggies manager – who has been described as a "genius" by former Leeds man Romario Vieira – would be perfect to show their League One rvials that they mean business.

It could also be rather beneficial for veteran striker Lukas Jutkiewicz after seeing what the Spaniard did at Huddersfield Town, transforming Danny Ward during his time with the Terriers.

Why Corberan could be perfect for Jutkiewicz

Still yet to agree a new deal with the Blues, Jutkiewicz could have a fire back in his belly to succeed with Corberan at the helm, who turned around the fortunes of another inconsistent attacker in Ward when managing in West Yorkshire with Huddersfield.

Only scoring four goals last season in total, Jutkiewicz's story is similar to that of Ward's when Corberan arrived at Huddersfield in 2020, having bagged just one solitary league strike during the 2020/21 season before the current West Brom man worked his magic.

The 5 foot 11 forward hasn't ever quite been able to reach the heights of his 2021/22 output since Corberan's departure, as the 41-year-old boss turned the Yorkshire-born attacker into an unlikely fan's favourite, with 14 goals scored across a near promotion-winning campaign.

Ward will line up for the Terriers next season in the same division as Birmingham, potentially reuniting with his old boss, who could well get Jutkiewicz firing on all cylinders again in a similar vein, especially in the drop-down.

Praised for being a "brilliant" manager who makes his teams "horrible to play against" by Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman, Corberan's approach to setting his sides up to play physical football would suit Jutkiewicz to a tee, who has excelled in the past as a target-man style striker for the Blues.

Imposing with his 6 foot 1 frame, the 35-year-old could also be inspired by Derby's use of veterans in their recent promotion story to succeed at this level as Birmingham aim for an immediate return back to the Championship.

Daniel Brettig19-Jul-2020Former Sri Lanka and Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has beaten a lengthy list of rivals to return to New South Wales as senior assistant and batting coach of the state side, having previously served as assistant coach between 2010 and 2014.The likes of former Cricket Australia pathways coach Chris Rogers and former West Indies assistant Toby Radford are also believed to have applied for the role, but they fell short of Hathurusingha’s deep and impressive CV, which will afford the NSW batsmen a broad education in handling different challenges in all conditions.Hathurusingha’s appointment is the first significant move by Greg Mail after he became the Blues’ head of cricket in May, rounding out a coaching staff that also features Phil Jaques as head coach alongside pace bowling coach Andre Adams and spin bowling coach Anthony Clark.ALSO READ: Phil Jaques: Dukes ball helped stretch Sheffield Shield playersIt’s not the first time that Cricket NSW has seen fit to rehire a former coach who departed temporarily for international duties. In 2013 the state brought back Trevor Bayliss as state coach after his successful stint as coach of Sri Lanka, only to see him exit once again in 2015 to take over as England coach ultimately guiding the side to the 2019 ODI World Cup.Hathurusingha was a trusted lieutenant for Bayliss with both Sri Lanka and NSW, while he also played a key role in helping to rejuvenate the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League after its moribund start to the competition.NSW had needed to find a new batting coach after the Englishman Michael Yardy returned home for family reasons halfway through a two-year deal he had signed in 2019, and Hathurusingha was back in Australia after a messy departure from his time as Sri Lanka coach, after the board stopped paying him in October 2019 but did not formally terminate his contract until early this year.It had been a slow deterioration in the role, after Hathurusingha was deprived of selection responsibility on the tour of South Africa in early 2019, and then effectively removed from his coaching role midway through the World Cup in England while continuing to travel with the team. He had subsequently been linked with a possible return as coach of Bangladesh, before Russell Domingo was appointed late last year.
