Everton interested in January deal to sign exciting defender Archie Brown

Everton have been credited with an interest in a new defender, but a fresh report has revealed that they aren’t the only club who are looking to bring him to the Premier League in January.

Sean Dyche's current left-back options

The Toffees have Ashley Young and Vitaliy Mykolenko as their two natural candidates at left-back as it stands, but there’s a chance that the former could be heading for the exit door either in the upcoming window or next summer for two reasons in particular.

The Goodison Park veteran is now 38 years of age, and with his short-term deal also set to expire at the end of the season (Everton contracts), Sean Dyche may have to enter the market to find a suitable replacement for him should he not be offered the chance to extend his stay beyond the conclusion of the campaign.

Everton want to sign "humble" Italy star who's at the peak of his powers

Another Premier Leage club are also keen.

ByHenry Jackson Dec 11, 2023

If that is the case, Gent’s Archie Brown has emerged as a potential target, with the 21-year-old having only put pen to paper at his new club four months ago from Lausanne-Sport, where he’s so far made a total of 18 appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Brown statistics).

The Belgian Pro League star already has experience under his belt playing in England having grown up in the academy at Derby County, and if the following update is to be believed, he could be heading for a return to his homeland with three clubs monitoring his situation.

Everton keeping tabs on Brown

According to The Daily Mail, Everton are interested in Brown, but they are also set to face stiff competition from teams in a couple of other countries ahead of January.

Everton and Burnley are among the clubs keeping an eye on former Derby youngster Archie Brown. And the English left-back is now back on the radar of sides in England as well as from Germany's Bundesliga and Italy’s Serie A. As well as Everton and Burnley, Championship Leeds are also monitoring Brown.”

Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park.

Brown is a real prospect for the future

While Brown is naturally a defender, he’s much stronger in the attacking aspect of his game where he’s posted 43 contributions (24 goals and 19 assists), from 136 appearances since the start of his career, displaying his desire to get involved in the final third.

Standing at 6 foot 2, the left-footed ace has also recorded 51 crosses over the course of the current campaign which is the second-highest total throughout his squad, so he loves to burst down the flank, dribble past his marker and whip balls into the box (FBRef – Gent statistics).

Alongside at left-back, Brown even has the versatility to operate higher up in the midfield and as a centre-back, so his ability to provide cover in positions outside of his own should any unexpected injuries occur will be yet another attractive attribute to Dyche and Everton, making this one to watch.

£20m centre-back determined to move as Spurs "ready" swoop for him

Tottenham are reportedly "ready" to step up their move for a £20 million centre-back as chairman Daniel Levy and co chase more defensive options.

The centre-backs linked with moves to Spurs

There have been an array of top central defenders linked with moves to Spurs since Micky van de Ven's long-term injury. The Dutchman's hamstring problem is expected to keep him out until 2024, and since his absence, manager Ange Postecoglou has been winless in his last four Premier League games.

Van de Ven's lack of involvement has highlighted a bigger issue, though, namely Tottenham's serious lack of cover in the position. Cristian Romero was suspended for a time too, meaning Postecoglou has been forced into starting makeshift pair Emerson Royal and Ben Davies at the heart of his defence.

Postecoglou really doesn't appear to favour Eric Dier either, but even the Englishman is now injured and unavailable as cover. While van de Ven and Romero could be partnering each other again next month, Spurs quite simply must avoid a scenario like this again later in the season.

Levy and new sporting director Johan Lange, as a result, are reportedly planning to sign a new centre-back for Tottenham in January. Uruguay defender Sebastian Caceres, Everton's Ben Godfrey, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, Genoa star Radu Dragusin, Union Saint-Gilloise's Koki Machida, Benfica starlet Morato, English starlet Jarrad Branthwaite and Sporting Lisbon's Goncalo Inacio have all been linked with Spurs since November.

These are a few interesting names to have been mentioned by reports in the media, with an update now coming to light on Godfrey.

Spurs "ready" to step up Godfrey move

According to 90min and journalist Graeme Bailey on X, Spurs are "ready" to step up a move for Godfrey who has found game time pretty difficult to come by under Sean Dyce this season.

It's believed the defender is "ready to leave" and determined for an Everton exit push amid Tottenham's chase for him, with the 90min report also claiming he'll cost around £20 million to prise away from Goodison Park this winter.

Everton's Ben Godfrey

The Lilywhites are apparently "prepared to push ahead with a move" for Godfrey, who actually ticks many boxes as a pacey centre-back who could well be suited to playing Postecoglou's aggressive high line.

Tottenham scouts have actually been pretty impressed by the 25-year-old in recent seasons, so much so that he is now one of the prime candidates to reinforce what has been a stretched Spurs defence.

Godfrey's speed has also been highlighted by former Toffees defender Jonjoe Kenny, now plying his trade at Hertha Berlin, who called the Englishman "rapid" back in 2021.

“Ben Godfrey catches pigeons, simple as," said Kenny two years ago (via The Liverpool Echo).

“But when Ben gets going he’s rapid so I don’t know if they have a race or would have a race but yeah, it’s close between them two. Dominic is really quick too but I’d say Ben.”

Kusal Mendis eyes double-ton as mentor Samaraweera's send-off gift

Sri Lanka batting coach Thilan Samaraweera will exit the role at the end of this series, and Kusal Mendis is keen on fulfilling his wish

Kusal Mendis has paid tribute to outgoing Sri Lanka batting coach Thilan Samaraweera, and hopes to complete a double-hundred on day five, as a leaving present for a man who has seen him through tough times both professionally and personally.Samaraweera, who has been the team’s batting coach for a year, is due to be replaced by former Durham coach Jon Lewis at the end of the Test series. Mendis went through one of the leanest periods of his career in the past few months – hitting only one fifty across formats in 23 innings between mid-June and mid-November – and credits Samaraweera with helping him out of that rut.”I’m really thankful to Thilan because I was in a really low place – I had failed about 15 one-dayers, and still the coach (Chandika Hathurusingha) and Thilan refused to drop me,” Mendis said after batting out the entirety of day four in Wellington, hitting his sixth Test ton in the process. “They let me play Tests again. I was only only able to get here because they stood by me. Thilan goes after the next Test, but I’m really thankful to him. I was only able to do this because of them.”Mendis revealed that Samaraweera had taken an interest in his career long before he had taken up an official role with the Sri Lanka side. In early 2017, when Samaraweera was serving a short stint as Bangladesh’s batting coach – also under head coach Hathurusingha – Mendis had hit 196 against Bangladesh in Galle, falling four short of a double ton. Samaraweera had then sought him out and given him advice despite having been the opposition’s batting coach.”I remember one time in Sri Lanka, I got out for 196. Thilan was coaching Bangladesh at the time. He told me: ‘You will later realise what you’ve done. You’ve got more talent than that. To be able to score 200 at your age means you’ve got a big future.’Then when he had become our coach, I missed a double-ton again, against Bangladesh (making 194 in Chittagong earlier this year). He told me the same thing again.”Mendis said he was determined to make the double-century happen on day five. Provided the weather stays good, he will resume his innings on 116.”Before this Test he told me: ‘Before I leave, hit a double-hundred.’ So I’m trying my best to score a double for him. He’s helped me so much. Everyone in the team knows how much he’s helped. Not just on the cricket side of things, but he’s helped me personally as well.”

Arsenal could sign £100m "lion" who’s better than Vlahovic

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing reinforcements to add to their attack in January, as Mikel Arteta and Edu bid to get the Gunners over the line in their charge for the Premier League title.

While it’s speculated that the midfield will be the primary area for adjustment this winter, a host of star forwards have already been linked as potential targets at the Emirates, with two forwards in particular having a strong claim to bolster Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal transfer targets – Strikers

One name speculated to be of interest to the north Londoners is Brentford talisman Ivan Toney, whose ban from football is due to expire in January.

A report from the Mirror claimed that the Bees have placed a £100m price tag on their striker, in the hope of warding off Arsenal’s expected interest to sign the Northampton-born gem in future windows.

Sadly for Thomas Frank, it looks as though the Englishman is hoping for a transfer, with a recent report from 90min claiming that the 27-year-old is ‘demanding’ a release clause to be introduced to allow a future departure to proceed without negotiation.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

As well as Toney, Football Transfers have linked Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic to north London, stating that the Serbian is Arteta’s ‘preferred number nine target’, relaying in the report that the Gunners wanted to sign the 23-year-old in January 2022.

In Vlahovic and Toney, Arsenal could capture one of two verified hitmen, however the England international could be a better fit for the Emirates than the Serie A whiz.

Why Ivan Toney would be a better fit than Dusan Vlahovic

Admittedly, either striker would be welcomed with open arms in north London, with Arteta’s current options of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah far from the desired level of a prolific forward.

Recently, the Brazilian told news outlets in Brazil that scoring goals is not his “strong point”, while Nketiah has scored just 37 goals at senior level for Arsenal in 148 appearances, stressing the Gunners’ need for a reliable number nine.

Vlahovic is an assured goalscorer, with the 23-year-old having already scored 99 domestic career goals to showcase his proficiency in the final third.

Once lauded as “clinical” by Arsenal figure Eduardo Hagn, the Serbia international netted 21 Serie A goals in the 2020/21 campaign for Fiorentina, however his scoring prowess has not translated to Juventus, flagging warning signs for a potential transfer pursuit.

Last term, Vlahovic only scored ten goals in Serie A, suggesting that his clinical streak is not quite as transferable as first assumed, with him appearing to be struggling to adapt to Juve’s style of play.

In signing Toney, Arsenal could land a more reliable outlet in the final third than the towering Serie A gem, with the Englishman well-equipped to play in the Premier League, and has a consistent track record of high scoring throughout his career.

Last season, only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland scored more in the league than Toney, relaying his potency and calibre when leading the line in the English top flight.

Once dubbed a “lion” by Frank, the 27-year-old could be the no-nonsense presence craved at the Emirates in front of goal, with his assets far more threatening than that of Nketiah, as highlighted above.

Signing one of the league’s top goal-scoring talents could fire Arsenal to new heights, and fire the Gunners closer to their dreams of collecting their first Premier League title since 2004.

Alongside Eze: Crystal Palace looking to offer “beast” new Eagles contract

Crystal Palace are hoping to offer one of their first-team stars a new deal alongside Eberechi Eze, according to a reliable journalist and transfer insider.

Eberechi Eze contract update

The Eagles received a £60m offer from Premier League rivals Manchester City for Eze over the summer which they swiftly rejected, and despite attracting interest from the top-flight giants, Steve Parish and Dougie Freedman are reportedly confident that he will soon put pen to paper on fresh terms.

However, Roy Hodgson has nine players who will all be out of contract at the end of the season, including the likes of Jeffrey Schlupp, James Tomkins and Nathaniel Clyne (Crystal Palace contracts), so he might be forced to cash in on some of them should he not want to risk losing them for free upon the conclusion of the campaign.

Selhurst Park centre-back Marc Guehi still has just under three years remaining on his deal, but having recently emerged as a serious transfer target for Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, there’s a strong possibility that he is another who could be on the move.

Should he depart, Guehi will need to be the subject of a bid worth at least £50m which is the price tag that the hierarchy have set for their prized asset, but if they can help it, the 23-year-old is someone who they are hoping to keep in the building for the foreseeable future.

Crystal Palace want to keep Marc Guehi

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Dean Jones confirmed that Crystal Palace hope to retain Guehi by tabling him an improved contract with Eze. He said:

"Palace will want to tie him down [Eze]. We can see that this is a club who have little intention of letting players like him leave, same with Guehi. They want to build something at Palace. But the very least, if they're going to lose these players, then it has to be for top dollar.

"So you look to tie these players down, first and foremost, because you have got to protect their value and protect the club. But secondly, you want to also keep them so you can build something at Crystal Palace."

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Standing at 5 foot 11, Guehi isn’t the tallest for a central defender but that hasn’t stopped him from being a rock at the heart of the backline this season where he’s currently averaging 4.6 clearances per league game for Crystal Palace (WhoScored – Guehi statistics).

The Abidjan native, who has been dubbed a “beast” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, is also extremely calm and composed in possession having recorded a 90.2% pass success rate since the start of the new campaign in the top-flight.

Furthermore, Guehi has the versatility to operate at left-back and right-back alongside his usual role, with his ability to provide cover in other positions making him a great option for the manager to have at his disposal (Transfermarkt – Guehi stats), so it’s vital that the board do everything they can to retain his services beyond January.

Spurs: Tottenham eye move for "breakout star", already "checked in" on him

Tottenham Hotspur transfer chiefs are reported to have their eyes on one division's "breakout star" who's been described as "key" for his club.

Will Spurs sign anyone in January?

Ange Postecoglou has officially overseen the best start made to a season by any new manager in Premier League history, emphasising the incredible work he has done since arriving from Scottish champions Celtic in June. Spurs' seven wins from a possible nine games is just that, but the Australian has also implemented a newly-exciting style of football which is very pleasing on the eye.

However, there could be a concern over a lack of depth behind Postecoglou's traditional starting eleven. Both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have stood out as pivotal members of Spurs' team, but an injury to either one would leave Tottenham reliant on outcast Eric Dier to come in, or youngster Ashley Phillips after his summer move from Blackburn.

As a result, there have been reports that the north Londoners are targeting the likes of Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson, Juventus star Gleison Bremer, Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly, Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba and Chelsea man Trevoh Chalobah. As well as in defence, there have been suggestions that a new attacker could come in, with the likes of Al-Ittihad winger Jota and Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy linked.

Nico Williams transfer update

Recently, it was suggested that one of Postecoglou's transfer priorities is signing an alternative to Dejan Kulusevski and cover for the Swede out wide. Jota is apparently on the list, but according to a new report from 90min this week, another option could be Athletic Club winger Nico Williams.

The 21-year-old has stood out as one of the finest young wingers in Europe recently, even being called one of La Liga's "breakout stars" by journalist Zach Lowy. He's also been described as a "key asset" for Athletic by 90min, who shared a transfer update on Williams concerning Tottenham. It is now believed Spurs are eyeing up a move for the Spaniard, and have already "checked in" on him and his situation. Williams' contract is set to expire next summer as things stand, meaning he could leave for free in 2024.

As well as Spurs, Aston Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all registering their interest in the attacker who could well be an astute Bosman transfer if he doesn't renew. According to WhoScored, Williams has ranked as one of Athletic's best-performing players by average match rating this season; starting seven La Liga matches so far while registering two assists in that time.

Likes to play short passes

His brother, Inaki Williams, has also heaped praise on the rising star; hailing his "incredible" fitness level.

"[Nico] is a great player, he is in incredible shape and I think he can give a lot to Spain. He has shown it by giving Morata a good pass and I am very happy for him.”

Alex Hales ruled out of series as Eoin Morgan sees positive in spin struggle

The England captain was not overly concerned by the team’s latest collapse to India’s spin saying it was “a more useful experience than beating Australia”

George Dobell at Trent Bridge12-Jul-20180:43

Morgan relaxed over England’s spin struggles

Eoin Morgan admitted Kuldeep Yadav “exposes” a weakness in England’s game.Kuldeep, the left-arm wristspinner, claimed 6 for 25 as England were thrashed by eight wickets with 59 balls remaining at Trent Bridge. But despite the margin of defeat, Morgan played down the significance of the result. Suggesting that Kuldeep offers such unique challenges that it will rarely damage England, Morgan also reasoned that England would rather confront such challenges now, a year ahead of the World Cup, when they still have the opportunity to find solutions.”He is very good and there is no getting around that,” Morgan said. “He exposes an area of our game that we need to improve on and I think that is a good thing and a healthy thing.”Considering there is only one left-arm [wristspin] bowler in the world it is not a huge concern. You play against one team and he happens to be very good, he is not any old left-arm [wristspinner].”We have played great cricket for the last six months and not come up against anybody like this so it is a chance to improve on this area however long it might take between now and the World Cup.”You have to give credit where it is due, he did bowl well and we need to clarify our plans and commit to them and just be better.””This was definitely a more useful experience than beating Australia. Finding yourself coming up against something that is rare, it is like facing a right arm leg spinner who is very good, you don’t come against many of them but when you do you need to adapt and think on your feet, so it is always a good challenge.”Morgan also claimed that the surface at Trent Bridge provided some assistance to Kuldeep and suggested the pitch at Lord’s – where the second ODI is to be played on Saturday – will prove less helpful for him.”The two grounds we’ve played at have offered more turn than other grounds,” Morgan said, referring to Kuldeep’s five-wicket haul in the T20 match at Old Trafford. “I think Lord’s will be similar to Cardiff [where Kuldeep finished wicketless] in that regard so the shift will be important.”But that doesn’t paper over the fact that we need to get better at playing him.”England received a further blow with the news that a scan has shown that Alex Hales has a side strain sustained while batting in the nets the day ahead of the Trent Bridge ODI. He is expected to be out of action for three or four weeks and will not, therefore, feature for England in the rest of the series.Dawid Malan, who was called up as cover for Hales, will remain with the squad for the ODI at Lord’s on Saturday.Sam Curran, meanwhile, has been released by England to appear in Surrey’s T20 Blast match against Sussex on Friday. He will rejoin the squad ahead of Saturday’s ODI.
