Rangers: "Fantastic" gem who lost possession 23x was excellent along with Sima

Glasgow Rangers new boss Philippe Clement got off to a wonderful start during his first match in charge of the Ibrox side.

The Belgian led his team to a straightforward 4-0 victory over Hibernian in Glasgow and while the performance was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, there are clear signs of progress which will surely have already won some of the supporters over.

A winning start is expected by any new manager who arrives at the Light Blues and Clement managed expectations extremely well and the momentum can now build ahead of a Europa League clash against Sparta Prague next week.

Abdallah Sima continued his fine form of late, and he could become a key player under the new regime.

How did Abdallah Sima perform vs Hibs?

The on-loan winger was signed by Michael Beale from Brighton and Hove Albion, and he has exploded into some wonderful form recently.

Sima had already found the back of the net on seven occasions since joining the club, including two goals in the Europa League group stage, and he was one of the few bright sparks under Beale.

Against Hibs, he received a Sofascore match rating of 8.8 which was the best on the pitch and along with scoring twice, the player also took five total shots during the tie.

The winger also attempted a staggering nine dribbles, succeeding with four and it's clear he was keen to make an impression under the new manager.

James Tavernier

His performance was integral to the Gers gaining a crucial three points, yet it was perhaps captain James Tavernier who was Clement’s silent hero against the Easter Road side.

How good was James Tavernier against Hibs?

The club stalwart has had his criticisms this term, yet Beale lauded him as “fantastic” following the Old Firm defeat back in September and he put on a solid display this afternoon.

The right-back was excellent defensively, making four clearances, one interception and one tackle as the Light Blues kept a well-deserved clean sheet while Tavernier also won five out of his nine duels during the match.

It was his attacking abilities which were on full display in front of the Ibrox crowd, however. The 31-year-old made four key passes during the tie as he looked to create chances for his teammates, and although he didn’t get on the scoresheet, he created a big chance while succeeding with two of his five dribble attempts.

It was not the finest performance of his Gers career to date – as he did lose possession on 23 occasions – yet Clement will be pleased at just how effective his captain was during a game which could potentially have been a banana skin for the Belgian.

If Tavernier continues to step up to the plate and deliver consistent performance between now and the end of the current season, the Light Blues could challenge for silverware.

The former Club Brugge manager is no miracle worker, but this 4-0 win is a solid start to what could hopefully be a productive time in charge of the Glasgow side.

Everton were bled dry by "useless" dud who cost the club £7.9m per goal

Everton have endured a slippery slide down the Premier League table in recent years and that is mostly down to their misfiring transfer strategy.

The Toffees have suffered through years of inadequacy and terrible decision-making on the transfer front, acquiring talent for ridiculous amounts and burning through the wage budget like there's no tomorrow.

Such is their consistent failures across numerous tenures, the Merseyside giants have allegedly breached financial fair play (FFP) rules and that is a searing indictment of the issues that have plagued them of late.

With years of overspending coming back to bite them as a potential 12-point deduction looms, it is easy to narrow down the list of stars who have contributed to their plight on and off the pitch.

Moise Kean, in particular, is one talent who exhibits Farhad Moshiri's addiction to emptying his deep pockets on players who have ultimately underperformed in the Blue of Everton.

Moise Kean's best qualities

During the Marco Silva tenure in the summer of 2019, Everton shelled out a whopping £29m on a 19-year-old Kean from Juventus.

At the time, the Italian wonderkid looked like he was worth every penny having terrorised defences in Serie A across the 2018/19 season.

The teenager was largely restricted to substitute appearances, but he still showcased his sharpness and predatory instincts in front of goal to gobble up chances, netting six in 13 matches in that campaign.

Perhaps more impressive, Kean was displaying his talents as a complete striker, coming out on top in the physical battle against defenders, peeling in behind with his searing pace and supplying a ruthless finish in front of goal.

According to FBref, the youngster ranked in the top 1% against his positional peers in Serie A for non-penalty goals, top 19% for successful take-ons, top 20% for pass completion and top 1% for aerials won.

When he arrived at Goodison Park, Kean had a whole host of competition to contend with in the striking department, including Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Cenk Tosun, but given his talents, he was expected to become a roaring success on Merseyside, however, that couldn't be any further from the truth.

The total cost of Moise Kean's transfer to Everton

Arriving as one of the most in-demand young strikers in Europe, a heavy weight of expectation was planted on the Italian's shoulders, and there is one key factor as to why he never lived up to the hype.

Speaking to CalcioMercato last year, Kean's brother, Giovanni Kean, revealed that he was very upset about his transfer to Everton, which happened less than two months after Maurizio Sarri took over as manager.

He said: "Allegri was the first to realize his potential. What a pleasure to see him score a brace against Lazio under the eyes of Sarri, who didn't want him. Kean was very upset about the transfer to Everton."

Kean's dejection unsurprisingly impacted his performance on the pitch, featuring 39 times for the club but only mustering four goals, two of which came against lower league opposition, Salford City and Fleetwood Town, in the Carabao Cup. There was even that wretched incident where Duncan Ferguson substituted him on, only to then drag him back off.

Having struggled to settle in England and leave his mark on the pitch, the Italian ultimately bled Everton dry of £2.7m in wages across his debut campaign, amounting to a total of £31.7m when factoring the initial £29m transfer fee.

In the 2020/21 campaign, Kean was granted the opportunity to join Paris Saint-Germain on loan, enjoying a successful spell at the French giants with 17 goals in 41 appearances, including three strikes in the Champions League. Impressive form indeed. Just where did that go at Goodison?

Since then, the 23-year-old has spent two seasons on loan at his former club Juventus, where his performance in the Coppa Italia final in 2022 was described as "useless" by journalist Tancredi Palmeri.

Despite his stop-start displays in Turin, the Italian giants triggered the £24m option to buy in his two-year loan in March, with Everton feeling fortunate to recoup most of what they initially forked out for him.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Dragons are coming off an impressive victory, having thrashed Accrington Stanley 4-1 at the STōK Cae Ras last weekend. However, as Wrexham aim to maintain their momentum, the uncertainty surrounding Mullin's availability is a concern for Phil Parkinson. However, the manager will receive a shot in his arm as both Tom O'Connor and George Evans have joined team training and are available for selection.

    WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Speaking to reporters, Parkinson said: "There’s been the plus points of Tom O’Connor being back in training this week which is great for us. He gives us options in midfield and at the back because he’s a very versatile player. George Evans was back on the grass yesterday and as I’m stood here watching, he’s out there now and that progress is really positive for us. Nobody likes to see their fellow players injured and with Tom’s there was nothing we could really do because it was a broken foot. It’s great that we had the Alter-G treadmill to keep his fitness levels up."

However, Parkinson revealed that Mullin's fitness will be monitored, adding: “We’re monitoring Mulls because it’s something that needed to be done but with the sheer volume of games, we didn’t have a chance to do it. We’re just going to see how he is today and tomorrow."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The recent break provided by a full week on the training ground comes as a timely respite for the squad, particularly after a gruelling schedule of seven games in 28 days. And Parkinson tried to make the most of it to fine-tune the settings ahead of the business end of the season.

“It’s been a good week and the lads that played the majority of those games in recent weeks have had a chance to recharge their batteries," he said. “We’ve had a chance to get some freshness back in us both physically and mentally and I’m pleased with the way the lads have looked. We have been ready for that breather and of course the lads have been lifted by that victory at the weekend, and we’re ready to go again at Morecambe.”

    WHAT NEXT?

Wrexham are three points adrift of league leaders Mansfield Town and can hardly afford to slip up if they have to remain in contention for an automatic qualification spot. Hence, Parkinson's troops should be charged up to secure another crucial victory, this time away from home, after a dominant showing against Accrington Stanley.

Warner and Bancroft to commence returns through NT Strike League

Banned Australian batsmen to make appearances in Northern Territory’s Strike League in July; David Warner commits to playing two matches, Cameron Bancroft to entire season

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-2018Banned Australian batsmen David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will commence their returns to cricket after their part in the Newlands ball tampering scandal with appearances at the Northern Territory limited-overs Strike League in July. Both players had been approached by Cricket NT to take part in the tournament, which takes in both T20 and one-day fixtures. Warner has committed to playing in two matches, while Bancroft will take part in the entire tournament. It is also looking increasingly likely that Warner will join former Australia captain Steven Smith in Canada’s Global T20 tournament in Toronto early in July.Warner, who has already spent time participating in community cricket projects in the territory, said that the earlier visit was the catalyst for his participation. “I’m really looking forward to playing in the Strike League in July,” he said. “I heard so much about the competition while I was in Darwin earlier this month that I’m keen to be part of it.”The inclusions of Warner and Bancroft are a publicity win for the competition, which in recent years has become a popular destination for Australian domestic players to get some off-season playing time without venturing overseas. “Their presence and experience will be invaluable for our local players, and it’s a big endorsement for the fantastic work being done by the staff at NT Cricket to make Darwin the winter destination of choice for Australian cricket,” NT Cricket chief executive Joel Morrison said.”The Strike League is a fantastic competition with a mix of local, interstate and overseas players participating, and is a great showcase of the excellent facilities and talent we have in the North.”Warner and Bancroft had previously committed to turning out for their local club sides during the Australian summer, Warner for Randwick Petersham and Bancroft for Willetton, after West Australian clubs voted to allow him an exception from WACA rules, which state that any player banned from playing first-class cricket may not play at club level.Similarly to his arrangement with Cricket NT, Warner appears to be keeping his options open to play overseas T20 tournaments while serving out his ban, having only committed to playing a few games in Sydney grade cricket.”We’re delighted to have him,” the club president Mike Whitney said earlier this month. “He’s one of the best players Australia has had since World War Two. He’s been speaking to one of our club officials and he has committed to the first three or four rounds of the season. Why it is only three or four rounds at this stage, I don’t know.”

Leeds: Daniel Farke now eyeing cost-effective left-back solution

Leeds United could now find a cost-effective solution to their left-back issue despite the transfer window being closed at Elland Road, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest news involving Leeds United?

News Leeds United signing Ethan Ampadu has made a significant impact at Elland Road since arriving from Chelsea in the summer and has been voted Socios Player of the Month.

Speaking to the Whites' official website, the Wales international expressed his delight at winning the award and how he has started life in Yorkshire, stating: "It was never my aim to come here and win awards, it was more to settle in and see how I could help the team. I really appreciate the fans for all of their support and hopefully by them voting for me, it shows I'm going someway to repaying them for that support and I hope to do even more. Everyone here, the staff, players and all the fans, have made it really easy for me to settle in, so it's been an easy and smooth transition and I've really enjoyed it."

Leeds United have taken just five points from their opening six matches in the Sky Bet Championship so far and face a tough test away to adversaries Millwall on Sunday at The Den.

Former player Paul Robinson has indicated that their encounter against Millwall is a game that Daniel Farke needs to win, stating to MOT Leeds News: “But, it’s always difficult – a game at 12 o’clock on a Sunday after the international break, it’s not an ideal time, but it’s a game that Leeds will need to win. Farke’s job is not in question yet. I mean, yes, they’ve had an indifferent start to the season, but there are reasons as to why: injuries, him coming in late, etcetera, et cetera. If they’re still in 15th in the next international break then there’ll be questions asked. That’s just the nature of the beast, unfortunately.”

As per a recent report from The Athletic, Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers contemplated making a bid for Leeds United ace Jamie Shackleton in the summer; however, no move materialised to try and prize the 23-year-old away from Elland Road in the end.

What has Ben Jacobs said about Leeds United's left-back situation?

Journalist Jacobs has indicated that Farke could be willing to enter the market for a left-back after recent injury problems concerning Junior Firpo.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs stated: "I don't expect Leeds to panic sign and get cover for cover's sake. But it's obvious to anyone who looks at what Leeds have got on paper that they still need to strengthen in that left-back position. So, if a free agent becomes available, they'll move because it's relatively low-risk and cost-effective. But right now, I just don't think there are that many targets that are right for Leeds. There's no point in just adding an extra body for the sake of it if they're not going to benefit the football team. So, the left-back position is Firpo’s and Leeds will just be praying that he stays fit."

Leeds United's Junior Firpo

Firpo looks to be closing in on a return to first-team action in the near future; however, it is unclear if he will be available for selection against Millwall this weekend.

As per Leeds Live, Whites boss Farke has confirmed that both Firpo and Sam Byram, who has deputised at left-back this term, are on the verge of re-entering the first-team fold, stating earlier this month: "I also have to say we've got Junior Firpo, we've got Sam Byram who was outstanding there (at left-back). So I hope both will be back on the other end of the International break at least. "It looks good with the rehab of both of them."

Leeds United fans will be desperate for both to return and will hope their side can climb the Sky Bet Championship table following a frustrating start to 2023/24.

Newcastle transfer news: Update on January move for Kalvin Phillips

Newcastle United are considering a loan move for Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips in January, and a fresh report has revealed his stance on a switch to St. James' Park.

How much is Kalvin Phillips paid a week?

At Man City, Phillips currently pockets £150k-per-week, which he isn’t really earning – since making his big-money move last summer from Leeds United, he’s failed to make any kind of positive impression on Pep Guardiola.

In the Premier League last season, the defensive midfielder was handed just two starts, showing how low down in the pecking order he is, so even though his contract isn’t set to expire for another five years, he’ll know that the only way he’ll receive more regular game time is by sealing a move elsewhere.

The Irish Independent reported in July that the Magpies were plotting loan moves for both the 27-year-old and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, though it was claimed by the same outlet that the former is the one that chiefs were most keeping a close eye on.

Football Transfers later backed this up by revealing that Eddie Howe is a "big, big fan" of the England international, and despite a deal failing to materialise before the deadline on September 1st, it sounds like the boss could be tempted to take a second bite of the cherry in the new year.

Are Newcastle signing Kalvin Phillips?

According to INews, Phillips is facing an "increasingly uncertain" future at Man City, but despite attracting interest from Newcastle and Premier League rivals Everton over the summer, he had a "determination" to stay and fight for his place under Guardiola.

Gareth Southgate still named him as part of his squad for England's upcoming fixtures against Ukraine and Scotland, but if he continues to be out of the picture upon his return to club action, he is "likely to push for a loan" in January.

The Three Lions star will have "no shortage of takers", especially from the northeast, so this could be one to watch over the next few months.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

How much has Kalvin Phillips played for Man City?

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, Phillips has only made 22 appearances for Man City, but having been dubbed a “Rolls Royce” by members of the media, he has so much to offer, so the minutes he’s getting under his belt could hugely increase should he join Newcastle.

The Leeds-born talent recorded a 92.6% pass success rate last season which was higher than any of Howe’s players achieved, highlighting his calmness and composure on the ball, but he’s also capable of getting involved in the final third having posted 28 contributions (14 goals and the same number of assists) since the start of his career.

Phillips, who has secured two wins when facing off against the Magpies, also shares the same agent, CAA Stellar, as Nick Pope, Javier Manquillo and Elliot Anderson, so this existing connection that his representative has to the club could give them a small advantage should they decide to pursue a deal in January.

Everton Could Partner DCL With £16k-p/w "Rocket"

Everton manager Sean Dyche is still on the lookout for more reinforcements before the transfer window shuts, particularly to bolster his attacking options.

The goal-shy Toffees failed to score in their opening Premier League tie of the 2023/24 season, going down to Fulham 1-0, despite registering 19 shots in total.

With this in mind, could they be a step closer to securing a long-term target in the coming days? This could indeed be the case, especially with the player submitting a transfer request at his current club.

Will Everton make more signings?

The Goodison Park side have been tracking Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto throughout the summer, and there has been a recent update on his future by journalist David Ornstein.

He said: “Wilfried Gnonto submits written transfer request in attempt to secure Leeds United exit. Multiple Everton bids for 19yo rejected; most recent £25m including bonuses + sell-on. EFC ready to table improved offer. LUFC insist not for sale.”

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

Dyche clearly doesn’t want the youngster to slip from his grasp, and with the player now handing in a transfer request, Leeds may have no option but to accept Everton’s next bid in order to secure a solid fee for him.

The £16k-per-week gem only joined Leeds last summer from FC Zurich, and if Everton get their way, he could be on the move yet again.

What could Wilfried Gnonto offer Everton?

The 19-year-old certainly burst onto the scene at Leeds last season, becoming one of their few bright sparks in a campaign that ended in relegation.

He ranked fifth for goals and assists (six) across the Leeds squad, while also finishing in the top five for big chances created, key passes and successful dribbles per game, showcasing his attacking talents on the left wing.

The teenage “pocket rocket” – as dubbed by pundit Tam McManus last season – registered four assists during 24 Premier League ties, while creating three big chances and averaging one key pass per game, suggesting he could form a solid duo with Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The striker has endured an injury-hit previous two years, missing a total of 46 games in the process. However, when he is fit and firing, the Englishman is arguably their biggest attacking threat.

Despite just seven goals in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns combined, Calvert-Lewin scored 16 goals across just 33 league matches in 2020/21, demonstrating just how important he was to the team.

Having a player like Gnonto on the left wing could give the striker plenty of incentive to get back to his best. The Italy international will only get better as time goes on, and his ability to create opportunities for his teammates and take on defenders will be vital for Everton.

The Toffees scored just 34 Premier League goals last term – fewer than the three relegated teams and the second-lowest total in the division.

Dyche will be hoping to secure a move for Gnonto in the next week or so in order to boost his faltering attack, and combined with a fit Calvert-Lewin, the duo could cause plenty of chaos for opposition defenders during the 2023/24 season.

Tottenham Make Bid For New Attacker

Tottenham Hotspur have made an offer to sign FC Porto attacker Pepe, with a report sharing how much a bid was worth and if it has been accepted.

What’s the latest Spurs transfer news?

Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou have been productive in the window so far, bringing in money after selling Harry Kane to Bayern Munich and spending around £165m on James Maddison, Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven, Dejan Kulusevski, Guglielmo Vicario, Alejo Veliz, Ashley Phillips and Manor Solomon.

However, Spurs’ incomings could hit double figures by the deadline, with Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge admitting the club want a new attacker and another defender before September 1.

“Yeah, I think Spurs could have a busy final week. I still think maybe two – I think three is probably pushing it.

“I know they would still like another defender and a forward, whether that’s a winger/forward, like I’ve said throughout the months, you don’t replace Harry Kane like for like and I don’t think Ange Postecoglou has any intention of replacing Harry Kane like for like as you simply can’t.

“So we’ll see what the forward options will be, but as I say for now, outgoings are very important.”

It looks as if one player of interest in the final third is Pepe, with an update claiming a bid has been made.

According to A Bola in the last 48 hours, Spurs made a proposal for Pepe worth €60m (£51.4m) broken down into a €45m (£38.6m) fee plus €15m (£12.8m) worth of add-ons.

However, the Portuguese side have turned down the offer from north London and will only let the player go if his €75m (£64.3m) release clause is met.

Spurs aren’t the only English side keen on Pepe, though, with rivals Arsenal also showing an interest this summer but right now, it appears as if the player will remain with Porto unless Spurs pay around £13m more.

Porto winger Pepe.

Who is Pepe?

Pepe, lauded an “important” member of Porto’s first-team squad by journalist Fernando Campos, is primarily a left-winger but is extremely versatile.

The 25-year-old, valued at a career-high €25m by Transfermarkt, has played in eight different positions during his career so far, ranging from a centre-forward to a right-back.

The Brazilian made 145 appearances for former side Gremio in his native country, contributing to 52 goals before joining Porto in 2021. He is under contract in Portugal until 2027 and has featured on 100 occasions in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and registering 16 assists.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Despite a bid being turned down, a move to Tottenham for Pepe could still be one to keep an eye on, however, he isn’t the only attacking target on the north London radar.

Gent’s Gift Orban, Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson and Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun have all been linked with moves of their own to Spurs, as well as Lille’s Jonathan David and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

It does look as if the club will push hard to secure a new attacker following this news on Pepe, but who that will be remains to be seen.

Leeds Make Bid For New Forward

Leeds United have made an offer to sign a new striker with just weeks remaining of the summer window, according to The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth.

What’s the latest Leeds transfer news?

The Whites have endured a frustrating summer both on and off the pitch, with a number of players activating clauses in their contracts to allow them to leave on loan following relegation.

So far, Brenden Aaronson, Robin Koch, Max Wober, Marc Roca, Jack Harrison, Rasmus Kristensen and Diego Llorente have left the club on loan to join Union Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Monchengladbach, Real Betis, Everton and AS Roma respectively, whereas Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts have left on permanent deals to join Al Rayyan and Birmingham City.

On top of this, Leeds currently have 11 players out through injury, whereas Wilfried Gnonto is refusing to play as he looks to force a move away before the deadline and Luis Sinisterra was also ‘not available’ last time out.

Read The Latest Leeds Transfer News HERE…

There hasn’t been an influx of players arriving either, with just four new signings made for manager Daniel Farke. Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, Sam Byram and Joe Rodon have all made the move to Elland Road.

The club are yet to win a Championship game this season drawing against Cardiff City and losing to Birmingham City, and by the looks of things, the 49ers Enterprises are looking to sign a new striker.

Smyth shared a Leeds transfer state of player for The YEP in the last 48 hours, claiming that the club have Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara back on their radar. The reliable reporter also added that ‘Leeds have lodged a bid for an as yet unnamed striker’.

Who has been linked with Leeds?

A new forward before the deadline appears to be desperately needed, especially with Patrick Bamford’s injury issues continuing into the current campaign as he is yet to feature in any of the club's three games, while club record signing Georginio Rutter is yet to get off the mark in Yorkshire after joining in January.

Joe Gelhardt led the line against Birmingham City last time out, so adding to the final third is just one of many areas that could do with bolstering. A number of players have been linked with making the move to Elland Road, including Swansea City’s Joel Piroe. Reports recently suggested that there is a genuine interest in the forward, however, his £20m asking price is proving to be an issue.

Other targets mooted include Aston Villa’s Cameron Archer, however, Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has claimed that the player would prefer to stay in the Premier League with Sheffield United and Luton Town keen.

Everton’s Tom Cannon is another who has been linked in recent days, with Alan Nixon claiming that Leeds have "been keeping an eye on developments" alongside second-tier rivals Stoke City and Sunderland.

A bid has been made by Leeds for a forward, though, so it will be interesting to see who that is and whether or not the offer is accepted, making this one to watch in the coming days.
